[Q] Is there a point in updating hboot? - Sprint HTC EVO 4G LTE

Sorry in advance. This is more of a confirmation than a question. Anyways, a friend and I have been in discussion about updating hboot. Now I'm s-off with hboot 1.19 and all I did was update to the latest radios. I'm more inclined to believe that that's all I need to do. My friend on the other hand says I should take the OTA or run the latest RUU, get everything including the hboot, then unlock the phone again and continue as normal. His reasoning is because he claims that the phone works better with the latest everything rather than just the radios. Is there any validity to his argument or should I just ignore him.

I'm on hboot 1.12 s-off I just flash the updated firmware when it becomes available my phone works flawlessly. As long as you are running the DR hboot 1.19 you are good to go

I'm not an expert but what I do know is you NEVER want to take an ota if you're rooted. Also upgrading to the newest h-boot is only asking for trouble. Who knows what HTC has up their sleeve. You don't to end up getting burnt. I am on .19 and have the latest radios and firmware and all is working perfectly.

Nope, the partition is locked and signed, 1.12 did have the ability though

I ran the latest RUU with bootloader unlocked, s-on, rooted and I got everything except the latest radio and hboot. You have to relock the bootloader, then run RUU to get a complete upgrade.

Yes, I used ZedoMax unlock tutorial to unlock the first time. Why do you not wish to have the latest hboot?
I was hboot 1.15 when I ran the latest RUU unlocked and updated on the firmware. I decided that having the latest radio was important and you can not get one without the other right now from what I could find. So, I now have the latest radio and hboot, I unlocked the bootloader once again and reflashed my custom ROM.

Sure, here ya go.
Install SDK tools first - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oaNM-lt_aHw&feature=fvwrel
Relock bootloader - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5yS7yy4XVA4&list=SP53B1EB8DBE7A5B59&index=1&feature=plpp_video
Update with latest RUU - http://stockroms.net/file/HTCEvo4GLTE/RUU
Hope this helps...I love mine after the latest hboot and radio together. It now has none of those pesky issues I was fighting.
P.S. after you relock, the phone will NOT reboot. Just keep it on "bootloader usb" and then run the RUU from your computer. Then unlock again. It will be all updated and run great.
I would suggest waiting as well. Chances are your missed calls and texts aren't going to be fixed by a new radio

I think the real chances are that s-off will be achieved on hboot 1.19 first, anyway. I haven't found one credible indication of anyone working on either though...

Its being worked on. Nobody is going to announce "oh hay guize I'm working on getting S-OFF". You'll know who is is when they find S-OFF and announce it.
What makes you think 1.19 will be found first? That doesn't really make sense.
I just think it makes more sense to have the latest radio. It was updated by HTC for a reason and everyone that wants it, not being s-off already, has to do what I did. Consequently, since the update I have LTE nearly everywhere I go in NW Houston, prior to the update was spotty connectivity at best.

Most people don't have LTE coverage yet, so for most the radio isn't worth hboot 1.19

Unless of course, you're having issues running a custom rom on the latest firmware and older hboot. Then, one may wish to look at the options even if they are the "most" as you say or the least as I clearly represent in your estimation.

Update HBOOT 1.15 to 1.19?

It appears that HBOOT 1.15 will not get s-off any time soon...Is it O.K. to upgrade to HBOOT 1.19 and wait then for s-off capabilities, or is 1.19 taboo also.
I am rooted, can I stall HBOOT 1.19 with abd, or would I have to root the phone again, and install a recovery...
There are 2 ways, ruu or revert to stock for ota. You must relock bootloader before ruu or ota. For the ota you need stock recovery as well. There's a few misconceptions floating around. First is that you need to update to run the latest base, this is simply not true, I'm running mikeys latest without issue. The second is basically the same but involving the aroma installer, flashes fine but sometimes kernel will not flash and you boot to bootloader. This does not mean you need to update only that the kernel did not like the new base, fastboot kernel and you'll be fine. Some people still have WiFi issues and others have LTE issues, both should have been addressed in the last 2 updates and people with the latest firmware are still having problems. To me this does not warrant relocking upgrading and going through the unlock again.
A lot of people including myself don't consider 1.19 an upgrade and like om said you don't nerf to update

Always best waiting
In my experiences, it is almost ALWAYS best to wait. If for some reason 1.19 gets s-off before 1.15 then u can update. But for now, just wait. I got lucky and I'm 1.12 s-off either way warranty is gone so always get s-off whenever possible.
I keep seeing threads about s-off. I'll like people to be more specific as to what they're trying to achieve that they can't while being s-on?
Sent from my EVO using xda premium
Just the ability to directly flash software to partitions normally inaccessible, Firmware basically. Those of us s-on would have to flash back to stock, lock hboot, and accept an ota or relock and run the ruu
Also, don't know the details of any of it, but in the s-off bounty thread guy is donating a 1.15 hboot. U can flip a coin better than I can say what they will do with it then. Either update it to 1.19 or try and find the exploit on 1.15.
Personally, if I was a badass at finding exploits in HTC coding then I'd crack both like yesterday. But if I was that badass I'd have better stuff to do as well... Hoping for 1.19 s-off just for future development.

Quick question: Are you saying that if I wanted to run Mean ROM that I do not need to be in the latest OTA? I'm confused because I was under the understanding that we needed to be on 2.13. Please clarify for me.
Sent from my EVO LTE using xda app
No you don't, I ran meanrom a few days ago and today I switched to viper 2.02. Meanroms kernel installer worked fine, viper required fastboot but both run fine
Thanks for the quick response. Wow, I feel like a dumb *ss now. I've been holding out trying any new roms because I didn't want to come off of hboot 1.15.
Which rom do you like better so far between viper and mikey's?
Sent from my EVO LTE using xda app
The level of customization on viper is crazy, meanrom runs great with evilz kernel and is closer to stock. I'm still sifting through the different mods for viper and I've yet to check out any themes but so far but I'm still digging through it all

[Q] Upgrading to 3.16, S-OFF, Rooted.

I hate to sound like an idiot but I am a bit confused. I am currently rooted, S-OFF, running HBOOT 2.09, I have installed TWRP 2.4.1.0. I am on 3.15.651.16 and would like to upgrade to the latest OTA (3.16.651.3). I thought that once I was S-OFF and had the latest TWRP, I could simply take the OTA using (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1770501) but when I take the OTA, the phone just reboots into the recovery. What exactly do I need to do in order to get the latest OTA installed?
Any help is greatly appreciated.

If you are indeed S-OFF there is no need to take the OTA you can just flash the needed files in bootloader

DirtyRacun. I am S-OFF. I just wasn't sure how to proceed. So I just take the "Full" Firmware from files from captain throwback and flash them. Do I need the TP image or boot img?

Full Firmware is all you need unless you are going to run a 3.16 based rom. Once more roms get updated to 3.16 you will need the TP image

I have a question that is just slightly different. I am rooted, S-off at 3.15.651.710RD, Hboot 2.09.4444 (DirtyRacun's Hboot), radio 1.12.11.1119. I am looking into upgrading to 3.16.651.3. As I understand it I should update my firmware before flashing the ROM. My baseband is older than the present one as well as the PRI, BUT...the PRL (Preferred Roaming List?) is newer. I hoping that it won't matter as I know I can update the PRL via OTA at anytime but want to make absolutely sure I'm not going to screw this up by taking anything back to a previous version. Am I okay to flash the firmware in this instance?
update: Sorry I should have been more specific. I have baseband 1.12.11.1119, PRI 2.87_003 and PRL 25012. Looking to install the firmware that says it will give me baseband 1.12.11.1210, PRI 2.97_003, and PRL 24010. I noticed the PRL version is lower than the present version on my phone.
2-18-13 update: I went ahead and did the frmware update and upgraded the ROM to 3.16.651.3. From what I had been reading, I reasoned that the baseband (radio) was the one true thing I had to worry about. Everything worked like a charm. I'm actually kinda glad I decided not to wait for a reply as it gave me a bit more confidence to do what I basically thought was correct all along but was too timid to act on. Thanks again and I gave you a "thanks" button regardless.

1.26.502.15 OTA confirm it breaks exploits for revone and moonshine for s-off?

I just wanted to confirm that I am not doing something wrong. Just got the phone a week ago and while waiting to see what the Moto X looked like (just to confirm I wanted to keep the One) got the OTA update. I have read a bunch of threads that say you can still S-OFF with hboot 1.44, but that is still the hboot on my one. I just wanted to confirm that even with the hboot the same, the update also eliminated the chance to S-OFF with revone and moonshine. I know they will be working on obtaining S-OFF, but I don't want to waste my time trying anymore. Thanks for your help.
Been known for a few days now.

Same version number, different date. My launch 1.44 HBOOT is dated in March.

Can I still get S-off?

I am using a T-mobile HTC One. It was previously rooted. I restored to stock by using the RUU from HTC. I unlocked the bootloader so I currently have unlocked S-on. My HBOOT Ver is: 1.44.0000. Radio Version is 4A.17.3250.20. Am I screwed or can I still get S-OFF? I have tried Revone but it's not working. Any Ideas?

Sorry dude, pretty much screwed until they find a work around for the .11 update. I made the mistake of accidentally S-On and forgetting to lock instead of relocking my bootloader (wanted to return for warranty purposes). After that I've tried pretty much everything from downgrading to the stock ROM using customs ROMS trying to edit RUU's to work with my phone (Do not try this, easiest way to brick your very expensive phone) Nothing works as of now, Htc and t-mobile screwed us by not giving us the Stock RUU they knew what they were doing. But yes you have to wait.
*NOTE* On the otherhand i did learn that i didn't need to lock my bootloader to return it for warranty purposes the guy at the t-mobile store replaced it right there for me no questions asked. But the replacement i got came with the updated .11 ROM which means no S-Off for me still.
Damn. That's what I was afraid of. I just kept reading that as long as you had 1.44 h-boot it was still possible, but that doesn't appear to be the case. Well thanks anyway for responding.

Wait I thought you could s-off with that hboot i thought 5xxx was unable to s-off
You can s-off hboot 1.44 as long as you haven't taken the latest tmobile ota or used the tmobile ruu, they patched whatever it was that allowed us to s-off in the latest version

I have tried this and was unsuccessful. Luckily I was able to run the RUU and it was fine again but it won't achieve S-OFF
You can downgrade from .11 to .8 using a custom ruu. Google " downgrade from .11 to .8 rootzwiki" and you'll find it.

Ok guys not to sound stupid but I've rooted plenty of phones and have had pretty much every top tier phone. I've rooted all my android phones. I just don't understand the s-off portion of it all. I have s-off and currently rooted. What advantage do I have over someone that doesn't have s-off? I got my one already rooted so I never went through the process. I guess that's why I'm confused. I'm used to Samsung phones.
When the update comes next week should i just wait for a rooted version of it? I'm assuming so.
Sent from my HTC One using Tapatalk
S-OFF basically allows you to do 2 main things you couldn't otherwise pertaining to Roms and such:
1- flash unsigned RUUs. You can flash custom firmware that don't belong to your device. IE: you can flash the newest 4.3 firmware prior to 4.3 releasing for the T-Mobile One.
2: get yourself out of a jam. Here's a great example. Let's say you flashed the stock GPE recovery and ROM. Your S-ON. You wanted the full GPE experience. Your phone took the newest update. It will flash 1.54 Hboot and update the boot loader to the black GPE version although you are S-ON and not running the GPE device. Without S-ON your SOL if you needed to go back to stock for whatever reason because the HBoot can't be rolled back on S-ON.
Its a good protection to have in your back pocket IMO

So that would explain how I am able to flash Roms from the international version. Well I guess I better be careful with any RUUs that are to come. I need to figure out how I'm going to update when the tmobile One's 4.3 update comes this week.

So once S-OFF is achieved, can flashing any RUU set it back to S-ON? If so, how can that be avoided?
I have a tmobile phone flashed with launch WWE firmware; don't care about WiFi calling or any carrier bloat, but did want the 1700 HSPA+. I'm thinking of clean flashing to latest Tmobile RUU to get the supposed LTE reception improvements, then going from there to back to launch WWE and to latest WWE (to try to retain settings).

No you would have to purposely set it back to s-on, an RUU won't do it. Would you be doing the tmobile Thu then installing WWE Rom ? Or flashing WWE RUU? Cause the ruu would just reset everything XP
