HBOOT update assistance - HTC EVO 3D

Hey everyone,
I rooted my trusty Evo3D back when the phone was new and the process was fresh, and I really haven't kept up on any firmware updates or anything of that sort, but actively flash new ROMs. I'm running into constant issues that nobody else seems to have, and I think it's because I have outdated radio firmware and HBOOT:
HBoot: 1.40.1000
Radio: 0.97.10.0530
S-OFF
Can anyone point me in the right direction on where to find the newest files? It looks like the newest HBOOT is 1.58, but I can't locate the file and the only tutorials I've seen involve a lot of downgrading, stuff I'm not sure I need to do. If anyone can provide me any help, that'd be awesome.
Thanks

Given that you are having issues, I highly recommend that you flash the Sprint ICS RUU to re-sync your phone at the stock level, then flash a custom hboot and recovery. There's no need to relock your bootloader and you won't lose S-OFF. That will get you on the latest firmware in the cleanest manner possible.

So you are on the old 1.40 hboot? Revolutionary s-off?
As recommended, if you want to get on the latest, just run the most recent ruu which you can get here: https://copy.com/fHLxtYEcygfqOKGg
then take the latest ota after you've run the ruu. Note that the ruu will return you fully stock. Also, please don't do this if you aren't s-off yet (which I assume you are).
After the ruu and ota update, you will be on all the latest firmware. You will still have s-off and can then do anything from there.
Let me know if you gave any specific questions or goals, but ruu is probably the best method.

[Q] Looking to S-Off a friends Rezound...overview

So, coming from a Thunderbolt...rooting and getting s-off on a rezound seems like rocket science in comparison. I've read and read for the past four weeks but I'm asking for your guys' help and clarification before I proceed.
Here is what has happened so far: My buddies Rezound is currently HTC dev unlocked with a custom ICS rom on it with S-on. I want to get him s-off so flashing roms and kernels will be a piece of cake without adding a bunch more steps. I figured out how to do it and understand the process myself pretty clearly but trying to explain it to my buddy...yeah, I might as well be trying to teach him another language.
Now, I assume he is on Gingerbread firmware since I haven't flashed the leaked ICS RUU(have to install gingerbread firmware patch on his ICS roms). This already is getting complex to me. On my good old thunderbolt I just had to use revolutionary to get s-off then it was flash whatever I wanted, gingerbread or froyo and flash compatible radios.
Here's what I want to do. I figure I should get him off of gingerbread firmware since the phone will eventually be getting ICS via OTA. To do this, I believe I have to re-lock the phone and then flash the ICS ruu. After that I can proceed to get s-off using the wire trick.
My questions are these: do I have to flash a stock rom before I re-lock the phone and flash the ICS ruu, or can I just leave his current rom on there(rezrom)?
And finally, what ICS version am I supposed to flash in order to get s-off? I see conflicting reports of this will work, any one will work, or only a certain one will work with the s-off method. Could one of you be kind enough to send me a link to download said RUU? I tried downloading one but it would check it in HBOOT and after the 5 minutes it took to check it, it didn't give me the option of running it...just went to the main hboot menu(fastboot, recovery, reboot, etc.). I don't know if it's because I was UNLOCKED (i realize you can't flash ruu while unlocked), or if the file was bad.
Sorry for the long wordy post but I felt like I should be thorough. Thanks in advance.

Just s-off on GB. You can do it on ICS or GB works the same way. Just if you RUU to ICS you will have to reunlock to soff.
Once s-off he can flash any ruu he wants in any order and keep s-off.
Also on a secondary note, you must have not had a thunderbolt when we first got s-off as getting s-off manually took about 30+ mins of constant cmd line use.
S-off on the rezound is much easier than it sounds. The only part that gives people trouble is the wire trick and mainly because it is all about timing.
Sent from my ADR6425LVW using XDA
I will say this outright: you can S-off right now using the GB package option on unlimited.io since that is the firmware you have. Answering the rest of this assuming an upgrade to ICS firmware, but that is the simplest path.

Correct. If you're patching the firmware is still Gingerbread. Check in the bootloader for "hboot 2.11" to confirm this. Only way you can update firmware and radios while S-on is to run a RUU.

When a phone gets an OTA update, it is expecting you to be on the latest official release. That currently is the 2.01.605.11 Gingerbread build, the first OTA we had. That means you need to be on the GB firmware, and stock everything else, not on ICS firmware.
That said, last part is correct: You would re-lock, flash an ICS RUU, unlock again, put recovery back on, and either flash a pre rooted stock ROM based on the leaks, or root the stock ROM yourself. Then you are on ICS firmware, ready for S-off.

Leave the ROM. Do a nandroid backup. Re-lock and flash the RUU. You can restore the nandroid afterwards, just be sure to repatch the thing to new ICS firmware if you go that route. Check second listing in the Roll Up Sticky post in the Dev section.

Unlimited.io has files for GB firmware and the first three out of four ICS leaks. Note this last leak, the fourth one, is compatible with the unlimited.io files for the third leak ("5/7 leak"). So little was changed, so you're safe going with that combo if you wish.

You're actually right. I didn't get my TB til June and I spent months reading how to get s-off and finally did it in...august or september, I forget. It was MUCH easier by then.
I was familiar with the original process(only by reading, but felt confident in doing it that way) but by the time I was done learning everything about it, revolutionary method came out and I did it that way.
I know that I can get s-off right now on his gingerbread firmware, my only question is what happens when ICS does get released and all the good ROMS start to come out? I want to get him on an AOSP rom when they come out. I feel like he'll be stuck on gingerbread firmware and when it comes time to flash any of the ICS roms, he'll be clueless. I could figure out how to do it if it required an extra step or two but explaining that to him might be a bit much. I'd rather him be geared for ICS (he has no intention of going back to gingerbread, ever).
Also, I was under the impression that flashing a RUU would make it S-on. So if I ever wanted to upgrade his firmware to ICS we would have to do the wire trick again to achieve s-off once more.
Anyway, Thanks a ton guys for your feedback already. Love this community and you're both a great help. Thanks for the clarification/instructions phantasm.

Hop through S-off with the GB files from unlimited.io. Keep the stock bootloader for now rather than flashing the JuopunutBear hboot when their program asks you. (Note S-off makes the bootloader "Locked" again, but the JB files are hacked so you can use them *as if* they are Unlocked status... handy and makes it simpler to get the phone ready for warranty exchanges again. But! We want to make sure we get ICS firmware and radios first...then slap on an *ICS* JB bootloader...)

Nope. Once you achieve S-off you keep S-off. The only thing that affects S-off is turning the flag back on manually yourself with some fastboot commands.
So now you will be S-off and with a Locked stock bootloader. Download the RUU from the 6/10 leak here, rename to just PH98IMG.zip and flash it in bootloader:
http://www.androidfilehost.com/main/-Support_Files-/RUU/Vigor/RUU_Vigor_3.14.605.10_PH98IMG.zip
Then grab "[ICS][2.25][JB][5-7]PH98IMG.zip" from SuperChilPil's repository. (Note the 6/10 leak and the 5/7 leak have the same bootloaders just like the first pair of leaks did, so this is fine to use.) Rename to PH98IMG.zip and flash in bootloader:
http://www.androidfilehost.com/main/-Support_Files-/SuperChilPil/
This will make you S-off with a JuopunutBear hacked hboot, running the latest firmware and ROM available. Choose a recovery to flash, preferably TWRP or AmonRa. ClockworkMod has charging issues, there is a fix floating around thanks to NilsP and his own source if you insist. You can then proceed to flash the ICS custom ROM of your choice.
TWRP:

AmonRa:

Edit: User zhp pilot claims this version of CWM is also not functioning properly at this time, see the thread. Proceed with caution on CWM.
And don't forget to make a splash screen now that you are S-off lol, stop blinding yourself with that white HTC screen:

In order to S-off the Rezound, you need to be HTCDEVunlocked, Rooted and on Stock Rom.

[Q] What exactly does a RUU do?

This thread is regarding RUU for HTC devices.
I've seen some similar threads but could not fully get the answer I was looking for.
From what I already understand, a RUU updates the ROM, the H-BOOT possibly and updates the recovery with a stock recovery. It cannot do anything that a BL-Unlocked user cannot do through adb or fastboot because the RUU uses only adb and fastboot. This means that the RUU does not (And cannot) update the radio. Am I correct in this?
And if so, what is the point of updating the RUU once you start flashing custom ROMs because they also flash the /system and /boot partitions and the only thing a custom ROM doesn't do is reflash the H-BOOT and the recovery.
And even if you update using a RUU for some reason (Whether it updates or if you just want to return to stock), do you have to choose the RUU that exactly matches your current radio version?
Assume for all the questions that the device is either BL-Unlocked or Stock (But S-ON either way).
Thanks in advance.

Hi, an ruu updates what you mentioned and a lot more. It will do things like change the splash screen, update the radio. and change the hboot which you cannot do with only an unlocked bootloader. It can do those things because its signed.
I had to use ruu's a few times, recently for an hboot downgrade to achieve s-off. Now that I have s-off I can flash any file I want in hboot asblong as its named correctly. Like a splash screen, or a lower hboot version.
Since an ruu updates the radio, it doesn't matter which version you choose, as long as its the same version you have or higher, but it won't let you flash a lower versionWith s-off I can flash any ruu version I want.
ok, so if I am currently running 2.3.4 and htc sense 3.0, does that mean that I can flash my phone with ics (4.0) as long as it is for the right phone and carrier???

I'm not sure for your device, but as long as the RUU is for it, it should work (boot loader version doesn't usually affect it).
hello, i wanted to know if RUU also achieves S-ON. I need to return my droid incredible to verizon for replacement due to screen malfunction. I cannot see anything on the display, but everything inside works fine.
I had unlocked bootloader using htcdev and rooted with S-OFF running 4.1.1. I am now on stock Froyo thanks to RUU, but I still need to get S-ON and bootloader locked.
So does the RUU achieve S-ON? I have downloaded the forever SON zip file. But I dont know how to flash it using ADB. Can someone guide me.

[Q] : Want to load latest JB update, and just had a few questions

Currently I am on Baseband : 1.12.11.0809 and rooted with S-off.
I would like to get on meanbean, which requies that I update baseband.
I was't 100% sure on how to do this while still retaining S-Off.
I have downloaded the 3.15 ruu plus root, can I just load that and it will update everything and keep me s-off, or is there something else that needs to be done to ensure I retain s-off, with the latest update?
Anyhelp information that you can provide will be greatly appreciated!

This will be the easiest since you are soff. Make sure the file is named PJ75IMG.ZIP and place on your external sd card. Boot into bootloader and it will ask if you want to update. Download the firmware minus Hboot and kernel.

Thank you both for the info, I just went ahead and updated successfully.
Out of curiosity is there any functional difference between hboot 1.12 and hboot 2.09?
On another note, I noticed that bigdaddy is running a different PRL then I have, is there a recommened PRL to use, or is it trial and error to see which one works best?
On a sidenote Thicklizard, I am also in the chicago area, nw burbs.
Thanks again for all the help.
There are a few PPL threads here on XDA I went with the recommendation from digiblur he takes the PRL's and dissects them the see what each offers
As for hboot 2.09 it seems HTC is trying to make it harder for us to have full control of our devices when we are S-ON
Here is an article you can look at http://www.pocketables.com/2012/12/...es-for-rooted-s-on-htc-evo-4g-lte-owners.html

[Q] What's the easiest way to upgrade firmware?

I do not have S-off or SuperCID and I also have a nandroid of the stock T-mobile software before I started messing with my phone's ROM, etc.
Any help is greatly appreciated.

I don't think it's particularly arduous so long as you have a compatible HBOOT, or can at least downgrade (i.e., you're not on 1.54). To be honest, though, I've never done it. BUT, I think just about anybody on here will tell you that if you can S-OFF, you should - and never go back S-ON, ever. Obviously you are unlocked and rooted if you are messing with ROMs, in which case you can indeed flash just the radio. You can flash just about anything on the phone with the phone unlocked and rooted. In my opinion, the only thing that sucks about being S-ON is not being able to reset to LOCKED and TAMPERED flags freely, and not being able to flash non-compatible RUUs, if you're into that sort of thing.

[Q] Help with Rezound RUU please.

Hi guys
I appreciate if somebody can point me out in the right direction.
I just unlocked TWARPed, rooted, and S-OFF my Rezound (Verizon) and I want to install a nice custom ROM but it still on HBOOT 2.25.2525 and radio 2.23.10.0123r/2 and 0124r.
What should be my nest step now? Do I need to update the RUU and RADIO?
I have downloaded the Android police RUU 4.03.605.2 and as far I could read here I need to install it before install a custom ROM right? Is this RUU the latest?
Do I have to re-lock the phone to install the RUU even if I am S-OFF?
Can I use TWARP to flash the RUU and is the radio updated with the new RUU or is a different process to update?
I appreciate your help!
Thanks

Thanks

2.25.2525 Hboot is the custom S-OFF JuopunutBear Hboot and does not need to be upgraded (I've been running it for like a year and half with no issues on several versions of radio/ROM), also your radios are current so no radio/hboot update is required... Just find a ROM you like and flash and go!

Awesome, thank you
I was in doubt about the RUU because Nils' Business ICS 4.0.3 Sense 3.6 requirements says: Have flashed the 3.14.605.5 RUU or later.

My downgrade upgrade guide is what youll need....dont dload the 4 ruu.exe files...all you need if your on hboot 2.25 is the last 2... Follow it properly an youll need to reflash recovery afterwards

Thank you REV3NT3CH, I will take a look on your guide right now!
Question for you guys, and I know it depends on preference, but could you point me out to some stable ROMs?
There are several out there and I normally don't mind reading hundreds of posts to learn the bugs and features but the amount of information about the Rezound it is overwhelming
I have CM10 installed in 3 of my Tablets but I also like Sense and don't mind using something different however I am not eager to try unfinished or experimental ROMS specially because one of the Rezounds stays with my wife, so a clean and stable ROM is the best option for us now.
Thanks you again!!!

You are already way beyond that...
What alotta people even android police confuse is that an RUU is not a zip file...its a windows exe program used to restore the phone....an OTA is a PH98IMG file...which the 2 files you need are the this 1st ph98img.zip and the this 2nd ph98img.zip and youre set

Although there are complete ROM ZIP images as well, even if all you have is Hboot & recovery and are S-ON, they will install provided the hboot is the same or older and partitioning is still good... The will install HBoot, recovery, radios, and system even if no system files exists. True they are not RUUs and do not perform a full system recovery (like in the event emmc is corrupted), but for many situations they are good enough.

Thank you folks! I am now running Liquid on my phone and Linaro on wifes phone and loving both so far!
It looks and feels like a new phone after free of that Verizon garbage!
