Ok so I used to have a rezound with an unlocked bootloader and the ViperRez Rom installed on it. I upgraded to a Galaxy S3 and sold my Rezound. A week or so ago my S3 took a crap so I purchased another Rezound off Craigslist. I want to gain root again and install a stable Rom. Can someone point me toward a guide that can walk me through this? I wasn't sure if the guides I have been reading were for a rezound that was still running gingerbread or ics or if the guide would apply to a rezound that was running either one. Also, if anyone can recommend a very stable rom I could install that would be great. I'm also tempted to try the trick to gain s-off but I'm a lil afraid to do that. I read somewhere that a paperclip can be used in place of the wire. Is this true? If so, ill give it a shot. I know a lot of members hate posts like this so I apologize in advance. I don't wish to ruin ur day. I'm not looking for anyone to hold my through this just point me in the right direction for root instructions and recommend a good Rom. Thanks everyone!!!

The unlock process via the htcdev.com website is still the same. If you're just going to replace the factory rom, unlock your phone, flash a custom recovery (TWRP, Amon-Ra or CWM) then the rom of your choice.

List of roms - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1425091
For the recovery install, download the PH98IMG.zip attached to the post above, stick it on the root of your sd card, power off your phone, pull the battery and stick it back in, power the phone back up while holding the volume down button to get into the bootloader, press power again then volume up when prompted to install the recovery.img then reboot.
Remove the PH98IMG.zip image immediately from your sd card's root, download the rom of your choice, boot back into the bootloader using the process above then select recovery to get into Amon-Ra and install your rom.
The one issue you will have with being s-on is you need to flash your kernel using your pc via fastboot, you can reboot into the bootloader from Amon-Ra and flash the boot.img you extracted from the rom download zip.
fastboot flash boot path/to/boot.img
Enjoy.
Thank u! I think the kernal part is where i would have gotten screwed up. So I download the Rom of my choice and open the zip file, remove the boot.img, put it on the root of my sd card, and then do I flash the Rom first or the boot.img? Also I remember having issues doing this before where I kept being prompted to.install the boot.img in the bootloader screen. After I install the boot.img how do I remove it from my sd card so it will stop asking me if I want to install it? Thx again!!

You put the boot.img on your PC so you can use ADB/fastboot to flash it to the phone.
You're confusing that with installing a kernel using a PH98IMG.zip file. That will get picked up anytime you boot into the bootloader if it's sitting on your SD card. You can remove those using a file manager app to access the SD card or plug into your pc and mount the SD card.

Ok gotcha. It's all coming back to me. Last question...here are the pics of the software information for my phone. Having looked at that, do I need to do anything else before I start rooting and flashing? I keep reading about making sure I'm on the right RUU before I start flashing and wut not. Am I good?

There are definitely a few options and a few things to be aware of.
HTC official unlock does NOT unlock kernel/boot write access while in the custom recovery mode. Still is helpful to flash the custom recovery as all other features will work from recovery mode, just not the ability to write to the kernel/boot partition.
This means there are only two modes you can flash the kernel from, either fastboot mode (requiring a computer) or standard Android mode, for which I made a handy application, Flash Image GUI.
1) Using my application, Flash Image GUI, will allow you to flash custom kernels and also select ROM .zip files, and then load the kernel out of the ROM .zip, while then booting into recovery mode to load the rest of the ROM (system portion). My application will also allow you to flash the recovery.img or any .zip file containing the recovery .img.
2) Using the fastboot mode there are two ways to flash a kernel, both require being connected to another device, generally a computer.
2-A) fastboot boot c:\downloads\recovery.img . This command will temporary load the custom recovery with write access to the kernel partition and allow a full kernel .zip or ROM .zip to be loaded correctly.
2-B) fastboot boot c:\downloads\boot.img . This command will flash just the kernel boot.img file. The associated kernel modules, such as WiFi will not be loaded and must be loaded by the ROM .zip in the custom recovery, otherwise WiFi will not work.
HTC unlock is definitely very helpf when compared to no official option, but has a few quirks forcing us to take a few extra steps.
Hope that helps clarify a bit!
I have tried this & it says "main version older" idk what that means but it didn't work!

This is gonna sound retarted man sorry just need to know does your hboot say unlocked at the top?
I know alot of folks were having issues when they applied the unlock code bin part using the HTC Dev way and it would say sucess but nothing would happen the phone would sit in hboot and no new screen would come up and say do you wish to unlock the bootloader.... Only way around that was to download the latest RUU exe 2.17 and use it then reapply the unlock code bin
I am trying to figure out why TWRP 2.0 was havin issues along with CWM and so I I have been swapping recoverys around on my phone all day to see if I could get the same issue you have been having...
I am running outta ideas since everything isn't wanting to flash over it's acting like the boot is still locked even tho you unlocked it.
Im hboot 1.5 S-ON
If nothing works you could try this then redo the custom recovery.. by fastboot flash.

Might be able too. PC86IMG.ZIP I just can't figure out why nothing is flashin over to your phone recovery wise...
I did the same thing took the OTA software update before I rooted and did the HTC DEV applied the unlock code and chose to unlock boot even tho said it could void my warranty. Then I downloaded TWRP 2.0 which I don't recommend using put that in my platform tools folder and fastboot flash recovery recovery.img or what ever you renamed the file tooo.
This is the recovery I was using worked fine just copy the file that is in the zip to your platform tools folder and fastboot flash recovery cwm.img
I really am tryin to figure out what is going wrong with the recoverys not wanting to flash over....
I dunno why cwm isn't flashing right..

I have been tryin to screw up mine to see if I have the same issue as you...
I am really tryin to figure this out lol.
When you did the HTC Dev method you had latest java JDK and HTC sync 3.0 I think was the latest and ADB and the tools it needs downloaded...
Also you don't have two pc86img.zip files on your SD card right?
Some of the PC86IMG.ZIP files might error or not work due to them being named PC86IMG.ZIP.ZIP
Does the computer you were using have ADB installed on it with the tools you can download when you open up SDK manager there called SDK tools or platform tools...
Since you need these to work adb and make sure debug is on in the main menu of your phone under applications development.
I dunno why superusers wouldn't flash either.. Might be something with ADB or SDK tools or Platform tools aren't downloaded. On windows 7 if your right click on your platform tools while holding down shift it will open up a quick path to adb
The stock recovery I used astro zip to zip the stock signed recovery.img. It was named stock signed recovery.zip when I zipped it. Then I renamed it to PG86IMG.zip & powered off phone. I went to bootloader & it found the file like before, said "parsing" & nothing else happens but it goes back to the bootloader highlighting fastboot. I did this several times by clicking on fastboot & then clicking bootloader so it can load the file again. Still it said "parsing" & nothing else. Like before, the only one that said something different was twrp which said "main version outdated" & the only option after that was to reboot using power button!
Also, I'm not near a computer & the super user I downloaded is from the market! I'm on hboot 1.5 unlocked WITH software 2.17. Do you think it's because the ota?

Nope there isn't. It's not a folder named recovery on the root of the SD card or on the main root of the SD card where you see the really important files & you can see the system apks etc! What does this mean?

Hey guys, sorry if this question has been asked already. I searched (for over 2 hours, but couldn't find appropriate answers so i decided to ask a question). I don't want to brick my phone as I don't have money to get another one.
So I have a Tmobile HTC Amaze (rooted, s-on, Unlocked bootloader) I was running energy rom (GB version) for month or so. Now i want to flash Mike1986's ice cream ROM. Like they said, I installed/paid for 4ext Recovery.
I just need clarification on the steps? In MIKE's forum they kept talking about flashing firmware (i didn't understand what that was).
Can someone point me in right direction.
How do I go about flashing Mike's ROM without doing S-OFF.
Thanks for the help!
It's no big deal. Just download the file and save it to your external sd card or (if you don't have one) save it to the main directory of your internal card. Reboot the phone into the bootloader and the firmware package will automatically install. After that, you can reboot into recovery and flash the rom like normal. Make sure to delete the firmware file from your sd card afterwards though or if you ever boot back into bootloader it'll reintall itself again.
Why don't you s-off its really simple.

SO I placed MIKE's ROM File on a NEW SD card and went to bootloader menu from 42xt recovery, nothing popped up asking for update?
You need to place the firmware on the sd card first. It's named PH85IMG.zip . Once that is on your sd card, reboot the phone into bootloader, not recovery. If you're not sure how to do that, here's a foolproof way:
1. power off the phone
2. pull the battery out of the phone and reinsert.
3. HOLD (very important) the volume down then also push and HOLD the power button. The phone will automatically start into bootloader and load the update firmware.
The phone should restart afterwards. At that point, you can install Mike's rom from 4ext recovery.

At this point, I'm going to facepalm myself - you're s-on. I apologize for missing the obvious. It's a little more complex now. You'll first need to relock your bootloader. Then you have to download and flash the entire ICS leak. If you were s-off, then the process I outlined would work. No sweat though, I'm running ARHD 2.2 with s-on. Just follow this guide:

I read somewhere that the RUU had to be flashed twice and as the newb I am... I flashed it once.
My HBOOT is 2.11.0000
No idea what my radio is... It doesnt list it on the front of the bootloader menu.
Do I need to reflash? Should I rewipe?
I had 2 random reboots already.
I'm S-ON as well.

Am I correct in assuming that any phone that ships with gingerbread will have a GB firmware until the day it dies, because of S-ON?

No that is not the case. Here is the latest leaked RUU
Rename it to PH98IMG.zip and put it on your the root of your SD card. Make sure you don't rename it to PH98IMG.zip.zip. Windows hides the .zip extension.
Your bootloader needs to locked in fastboot.
Code:
fastboot oem lock
(Do this before you place the PH98IMG.zip on your sd card.)
reboot into hboot, it find the image and then update the bootloader. It will take a long long time.
Then boot back into hboot for it to make another pass, this will update the system to ICS.
Unlock the bootloader again
Install Amon Ra recovery.
Install Scotts rooted stock rom that you have on the phone currently.
Done.
Warning, running the RUU will ERASE your internal SD card, so if you have pictures, video, music you want to keep, move it to your PC before you run the RUU.

What advantage do I really have going to ICS firmware, is that for the new radios?

I find that I get better signal, but that may be subjective. My battery temperature is noticable lower though.
If you are going to update the firmware, you mifht as well S-Off. Use the GB S-Off, then flash this:
http://www.androidfilehost.com/main/-Support_Files-/SuperChilPil/[ICS][2.25][JB][5-7]PH98IMG.zip
Thanks to superchillpill for the package.
This will get you the most recent firmware/radios.

Copy ROM to SD Card AND PH98IMG.zip to ROOT of SD Card
Reboot to recovery
wipe data / Factory Reset
Flash ROM
Use Developer Menu to reboot to bootloader and flash the boot.img file in the PH98IMG.zip
Reboot
Profit!
How do I get to the developer Menu with that ZIP file on the SD card, won't it just try to update and give me no way out of that process?

I managed to soft brick my phone or i believe so. I unlocked the bootloader, flashed cwm to the phone, rooted then read that it fails alot with the rezound so i prepped my phone to unroot and remove cwm and install Amon Ra and nodded off to sleep while in the recovery menu... This is where it gets weird... I woke up to my phone like this. I uploaded a picture of the bootloader screen... Its relocked and will not allow me to do jack... Im not the best at development and relatively inexperienced... I desperately need help. Please.
Well you have hboot so its not bricked. I would pull the battery and then make sure you don't have a ph98img.zip in root of sd. Then put battery back in and see what happens.

When I I rooted my phone i had forgotten to put my sd card in so it rooted using the internal sd. I cannot find external or internal sd card through the bootloader or via usb connection. Here is what the bootloader shows when i try to launch recovery.
Reunlock your hboot then try a regular reboot.

Do you have HTC sync installed?
Have you tried to download a complete RUU in PH98IMG.zip form and see if it will install from the bootloader?
Here is a link...
Flash ruu of your choosing then use the toolbox to install amon ra. When in doubt use ruu to get back to square one. I have had to do it a few times lol.

I've downloaded HTC sync and it's fully updated. I downloaded the 4.0.3.xxxx ph98img.zip from I can't remember where and tried throwing it onto my sd card but when I booted the phone I to hboot it did nothing. I'll try again if someone can guide me through it. And this is my fault for thinking after being out of the tech loop for years that I could jump back in and do a full root and rom flash without much more extensive research. I found out what happened also. My gf was trying to get the phone to turn on and couldn't figure out what was happening and turned out she was playing with the volume rocker and power button. So god knows she may have wiped everything from the inside out...

You could try reformatting the sd card using your pc and using that one to flash the RUU?

Not going to pull any punches. 1st off; learn your fastboot commands hassoon's toolkit is for ease of use. 2nd; You were almost there. 3rd; When trying to use fastboot/adb, make sure HTC sync isn't running in the background.

Have it named PH98IMG.zip(watch your filenames, be careful not to name it PH98IMG.zip.zip). But first try reunlocking again and see if you get boot. If you at least get boot animation that tells me you have a working boot partition. If not then you would need to reflash a boot.img. If you are adamant about gaining root, you could have just flashed a custom rom after flashing Amon RA + a data wipe along with proper boot.img in fastboot.

Simple steps I used when I was in an HTC boot loop.
1. Relocked and installed the stock ruu.
2. Unlocked and flashed the recovery partition using fast boot flash recovery recovery.img (name of your recovery image you want to use.)
3. Used recovery to install su.
4. Profit.
You can also use fast boot to install asop boot images. But for now if you want root use steps 1-4. It worked for me when I borked the heck out of entire phone. ( I had no recovery even after fastboot flashing the recovery partition.)

What should be done if i'm stuck at re-locked bootloader, S-ON, download mode screen, unable to lock-unlock bootloader nor able to flash RUU ? Even the unbrick tool at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=183353 doesn't detect my phone.
I gave it to a repair shop, he tried flashing the RUU but said he was getting some USB error.

Any idea what's on it now? Check the rom info in Settings, About Phone.
Also power it off, pull the battery, put it back in and turn the phone back on while holding Volume down, that'll get you the bootloader. See what version you have and if it's s-on or s-off.
From there you can select Recovery on the menu and boot into it, see what recovery you have.
Let us know and we can go from there.

You are already unlocked and have Amon Ra recovery installed, the "hard" stuff is done (actually it's not hard), and FYI you are S-ON... You are pretty good to go for any ICS based ROM. If you want to move into JellyBean or KitKat based ROMs you should switch to TWRP or CWM Recovery. Other than that, your good to go.
Ok, thanks a bunch! Ive done tons of reading about flashing roms and am still a little weary about the actual process. Ive read that a computer is needed in some cases but in others people are switching roms right from their phone- whats the safest or correct way to do it?

Although there are ways around it (that I don't recommend, mind you) the rule of thumb is based on whether you are S-ON or S-OFF...
When S-ON, a computer has to be involved so that the boot.img can be loaded... you must either: A) flash the boot.img manually with fastboot after flashing the ROM in recovery, or B) boot the recovery image file with fastboot and flash the ROM file
When S-OFF, no computer is required, all partitions of the phone are writable by recovery directly.

Don't forget you can use the phone (or a computer) to pack the boot.img into a PH98IMG.zip. As long as it boots, that is.
Hi All,
I am also new at rooting the Rezound and I'm having trouble. I did quite a bit of reading and followed the instructions here: theunlockr.com/2012/08/24/how-to-root-the-htc-rezound-video/
Apparently this was for an older version because I can't install ClockworkMod Recovery ("an error occurred ..."). I read that getting a backup of ClockworkMod Recovery was the best thing to do before installing any ROMs. Is that really necessary? It seems like I could always find an RUU on this site and flash back to ICS if I wanted to right?
Can some one point me in the right direction for what I should do next? Basically all I want to do is flash a ROM on my Rezound that will enable me to use it as a wall controller for my home automation system. So, ideally I'd like to remove the swipe to unlock feature (just be able to press the power button to get to the home screen) and to be able to force a nightly reboot with Tasker and remove as much bloatware as possible. This device is connected to my home network through wifi only. Any ideas what the best ROM would be for that?
By the way my recovery screen looks like undeadking's. I have S-On.
Thanks!

Easiest way to get where you want is to HTC unlock if not already done,
S-0ff with RumRunner, then follow this thread with all its great stuff:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2509770
You will end up with newest radios that are best for newer stock and custom roms.
There are several daily-user type custom roms mentioned in Development.
After you read a little about each, you'll know what you want to try first.
I like the custom Sense roms for best battery life.

Thanks, I was able to get my ROM working. The problem I was having was I was still S-ON. I was a little leery about turning it off so I found instructions for flashing with it still on here: androidforums.com/rezound-all-things-root/499172-how-manually-flash-roms.html

There are ways using terminal emulator with an s-on device alongside using a proper busybox installation to flash without using a pc and no fastboot/hboot access is needed. flashing a boot.img while in rom, rebooting to recovery and finish installing the matching rom by flashing its zip.

the one big issue you need to worry about while being s-on is if you soft brick while s-on there is absolutely almost no fix...with s-off you con ruu.exe to safely restore your phone which you cannot do while s-on....if you plan on flashing custom roms alot than i HIGHLY suggest going s-off or you'll regret not doing so when that time comes

I second this... S-Off is highly recommended, it might not seem necessary now, but when something goes wrong, you will be glad you did it.
