[Q] shocking shutdown - Nexus 10 General

I purchased my N10 the first day available in the US.
I recently was made aware that the speakers only emit sound from the very top (naturally in landscape mode) of the unit and only where they are identified on the sketch in the manual. The rest of the "speaker" is for show/design.
Last evening I was watching a movie. I decided that if the unit was upside down the sound may be more clear with the speakers reflecting off of the material upon which it was resting. And, it doesn't matter, right? Perhaps it does.
While midway through the movie the unit froze on a single frame then began to make a loud vibration sound wherein the whole unit was shaking/vibrating violently. It startled me; virtually as loud as an alarm clock. I instantly tried to shut it down but it took about 15 seconds of holding down the on/off button for the unit to respond to the shut down command(button). The unit was warmer than I had ever noticed. Quite warm/hot. The unit turned back on by itself as if I pushed a restart button.
When the unit came back on, nothing changed. My N10 was its usual self. The only thing different was that I had been watching the movie in an upside down position. I continued to watch the movie but this time in its usual upright position. I then had no problems and noticed that the unit was normally slightly/barely warm, as usual.
So now my question: Does it matter what side is up? (It seems so empirically)
Anyone want to try this to see if you would have the same result? If so, is the unit built where air circulation disburses from the unit as the heated air rises out of the unit only in the 'upright' position and is trapped in the inverse, building up heat until the overheat safeguard shuts the unit down?

Your problem isn't one of orientation. I'm assuming you're on the stock firmware? Its known to be kinda crash happy. Wait for an OTA or flash another rom.

[Q]Completelly lost all sound

Hey all,
I have no idea what the hell is going on with my tab. I did not have any issues and all of a sudden lost any and all sound. I was running Vegan 5.11 and then installed Vegan Ginger RC1 and thats when, I think, it started happening. I NVFlashed back to stock and still no sound. Tried to install a bunch of other roms and still no go. I am absolutelly lost of what to do. BTW I tried the earphone plug in and unplug but nothing. The only way anything happens is through bluetooth.
Help!!!!!
System & Alarm OK, No Media Sound
Let my G rested for a few days and last night the sound was cutting in/out. Today the sound is completed back. I am still on stock ROM, did not do anything special, just turned on the “Audible Selection” and rebooted a few times.
I guess it was too much water while putting on Skinomi screen protector...
**************************************************************************
Now it’s confirmed, media sound works, as long as the screen is off.
Tried to play music with stock ROM, as soon as I "saw" music is playing, hit power button to turn off screen, then I can hear music, but as soon as the screen is on, media sound is silent.
Would be great if sound and screen can both be on again. Please HELP!!
***************************************************************************
I installed Skinomi screen protector and after that lost media sound. During the installation I tried to power down my G but as soon as I squeegee the screen (even after confirmed power off) G will come back on and of course a lot of commands were popping up on screen since I could not power it down. After Skinomi installation I lost media sound. At first I thought I drowned the speakers but then realized system and alarm sounds still work, just no media sound.
Then I had another interesting discovery. If I tried to watch Youtube video and while it’s playing, hit the power button to shut off the screen, I can hear the media sound when the screen is off for a little while. As soon as the screen is back up, media is silent again.
I also tried the headset trick and switched from Vegan 5.1.1 to TnT Lite to stock ROM. I believe the silence was caused by pressing keys in special sequence but don’ t know what it was since I was using a squeegee. Otherwise I have had my G since Feb2011 and never had any problem.
I am praying to all you android GODs out there and hoping I can find an answer to have the media sound back again.
I fixed my sound issue that sounds identical
You should appreciate the beauty of the problem and the solution...
After thinking it had to be a software issue (because the sound worked as long as I turned the screen off) and finding no one at all who knew what to do I was about to give up on the sound on my g tablet.
But then I had a crazy thought - what if it was a hardware issue where either a contact on the motherboard melted together or somehow the sound cable was interfered with by a loose connection.
If you open the gtablet case - Gulp! Its actually not that bad...
Using an eyeglass repair kit screwdriver, gently remove the rubber circular pads on the back of the tablet.
Underneath you will discover screws that the eyeglass screwdriver can unscrew.
After unscrewing all four, use a credit card to gently slot between the seals of the casing all the way around. eventually the casing will separate without problems.
Once open, and with the tablet now facedown on your lap. look at the lower right section of the motherboard for a thin brown wire that is connected near the 3.5 mm jack up and connected on the other end near the middle right of the motherboard.
Mine was untaped and loosly laying over two contacts of the motherboard. All I did was gently position that little wire away from those two contacts to the left (right of the metal screen backing wall) so they would not touch those contacts.
Believe it or not - that solved the problem. Turns out that the two contacts when touched by the wire cause the sound to short off. But when not touching them, everything works fine.
The reason the sound would work before when the screen was turned off in sleep mode was because IF THE SCREEN IS OFF THERE IS NO LONGER A CURRENT GOIND THROUGH THE CONTACTS!!! Beautiful....
gently snap the cover back on and ensure it all snaps back all the way around, reinsert the screws and replace the little rubber backings and turn you tablet back on.
Good luck!
What was that? I can't hear you over my newly working tablet speakers!!!
Very interesting. Thanks.
I've been puzzling over (and, frankly, have not been able to diagnose) a similar problem. Looks like bad engineering on VS's (or Malata's) part if 5 users have encountered this same problem.
Karmas coming your way if the user verifies that what you suggested fixed his problem.
Thanks. I had the cover off before to resolder the power jack to the board. This time I accidentally pulled on the headphone cord.

Anyone notice slightly whirring noise from headphones

Just noticed an odd very light whirring noise from my headphones when they are plugged into the Evo 3d and the screen is updating.
For example when i turn the screen on and the weather animation on my lock-screen runs, it makes the whirring noise, but when I am on a static home screen it is quiet, but then if i swipe to move to the next screen i hear the light noise again. Same if click on the launcher button to open the app drawer, or click on the phone button on the screen and it opens the dialer.
Wondering if this is a common issue/bug, or if I have a defective unit i need to exchange.
The headphones work perfectly fine in my old phone so it isn't the headphones.

I had headphones on for about 40 minutes yesterday morning and didn't notice anything like that at all. Have you tried a different set of headphones?....just to pinpoint in fact that it's a problem with your phone.
I see what you are talking about. The noise is really faint, but I'd say not to worry about it since it may be software related. When browsing apps and what not the sound is gone.
Sent from my PG86100 using XDA App
Damn......just put my headphones on again and still nothing like that. Either my phone's not afflicted or my ears are worse then I thought after to many years working in a factory.
I can hear it too, when I scroll I can clearly hear it. This isn't anything new, I've noticed this sort of thing from other devices. Certain laptops will make a tiny squeal when rapidly scrolling something on the screen with the volume jacked up. We're probably hearing added EMI from the increase in CPU activity. Not much you can do about it. :/
The original Evo used to always make this annoying warbling noise during silence. At times it honestly sounded like faint music almost, it was that pronounced.

Yep, that's a fact of life, when it comes to electronic devices. When it puts out enough power, it'll interfere with the headphones (Which, if you think about it, headphones are just a giant magnifier for electronic pulses. Makes sense)
If you don't believe me, hook up an aux cable to your car stereo, and pinch the end. It'll make a buzzing noise. You're electrically charged enough to play music!
Same thing for the internals of your phone. Doesn't take much. Heck, you could probably set your phone next to an MP3 player that you have your headphones plugged into, and still get some interference.
Thanks for confirming that you can hear it too.
I know what you all are saying about electronics having some EMI, but i went back and compared it to my original Evo, and a friend's iPhone 3GS, and neither of the two gave any background noise because the screen was changing/scrolling etc.
Gotta decide if I want to return it. I love the phone's speed, features etc., and this is definitely a minor thing I am bringing up, but it just bugs me a little.
I also have this noise problem, noticed it right away. I also have a slight cracking sound from the speaker when a loud sound plays. It's odd because normally other devices are able to be placed at max volume without hearing distortion. I'm not ready to return it yet, my roomate got one this morning, and I want to see if his does the same.
My Evo did the same thing, especially worse when I had it plugged in.
Same effect on my phone. I just noticed
last night and thought I was hearing things.
I noticed this right away on my 3D. I never noticed any similar sound on my EVO 4G.
Thankfully, it seems to disappear when I am not interacting with the phone. Therefore, it's not a huge issue for me.

[Q] Issues (stock)

Dear all,
I've been waiting a little before rooting and installing a new ROM to make sure I don't need to return my phone for any reason. (So, it is stock now, no root, locked bootloader, KNOX still there, etc.)
So, far I've noticed three small problems, which I don't know if they are universal or just mine:
Sometimes when I get a call, the touch screen is irresponsive. If I press the lock/power button twice, it seems to work again. (I now have set up to press home to answer.)
It often feels a bit warm, more than I'd expect. (I have it in a case, though, a Spigen Slim Armor. It fits perfectly though.) But this happens sometimes when it is just sitting, not playing games. It is not really hot, but I can feel it warm in my pocket.
Sometimes I get a pop between songs. See this post
(So, at least one person also has the last problem.)
I can live with any of the problems above, but I'd hesitate to have a defective unit which can have bigger problems later on. Is any of the above an issue for you? Any suggestions if I should exchange the phone?
Thanks!
Luis
Do you remember when were the times when the screen was unresponsive?
I've read somewhere that sometimes when the screen is woken up and is under some pressure this will happen, and the only way is to do what you did. It's not uncommon in touchscreen phones though, so I wouldn't worry about it.
The verge app was broken until the most recent app update. Also, the s5 seems to refuse allowing Dashlane's accessibility service from working properly. So no more auto filling passwords for me. Ugh. I hoped rooting might help but it didn't. Now I really can't wait for custom ROMs to start appearing. Samsung, you make great hardware (like amoled displays) but your software sucks. Even the software on my Samsung TV is stupid.
Yes on two out of three!

The unresponsive screen is more than a little issue, it is being reported all over the web, and get's more severe over time. I'm thinking that it is a bad proximity sensor defect, either firmware, hardware or software. Some people are reporting along with myself that sometimes for no apparent reason, the screen will not turn on even though the phone is completely operational! This has happened to me four times now and I am stock with very few apps on my phone, five total games and Pandora. I do use a substitute launcher that I've used for years but I don't believe that would be the issue since others report the same issue with stock launcher.
The pop or skipping you speak of in sound happens to many of us who stream music in our automobiles. It even happens on the note3. The fix is simple for that one though! Turn the screen on. I was told that with many of the streaming software music programs that the phones CPU goes to sleep and does not offer enough processing power to the music program. I stream all day via bluetooth to my Auto's sound system and it will usually start to skip, click or whatever after the phone has been untouched for about twenty minutes. The second I turn the screen on the problem alleviates itself. You can find even more information by googling that one, in fact both of those! The heat one I have not had, both with stock battery and zero lemon high capacity battery. The phone very rarely get's warm. However, when I was using wireless charging it would get warm even after charging was complete but I believe that is a normal event with QI type tech.

[Q] Troubleshoot post-liquid-damage; phone boots/responds, but no display

I accidentally bumped a cup of coffee over on the back of my HTC Evo 4g LTE. I bumped a pillow into the nightstand while trying to contort my body in a way that would let me set sleeping my 10mo old into bed without waking him
I turned off the phone immediately, took off my Otterbox Commuter case (not the really waterproof Defender) and found a thin liquid coating on the back housing. Perhaps 1-2hrs later I made the poor estimate that it wasn't "that bad" and tried turning it on. The phone went into what I think was a boot loop (the display never showed anything, so I can't be sure), vibrating every ~30sec as it would if it were constantly trying to turn on and failing. It doesn't have a battery designed for removal, so I just had to let it sit.
Perhaps 6hrs later I went to check on it, and thought it was unresponsive after pressing the power button and nothing appeared to happen. I inadvertently pushed the volume rocker, however, at which point it made a beep as though it were adjusting the volume! After that, I noticed that the power button was also toggling the capacitive navigation buttons, which would illuminate and shut off as if the phone was "running" as well... but I still had no display.
Since then I've done a complete teardown (pop off all cases, separate all ribbon cables, vibration motor, speakers, camera, and removed the battery). I've done a few washes/brief soaks in isopropyl with the motherboard and then put everything in a vacuum chamber overnight at -20 inches of mercury. I also set the display and motherboard it in DriRite (lab-grate dessicant) for about a week now. In the meantime, I assumed the display may have been fried and ordered a replacement since it was only $28 on ebay. I just got it yesterday, but get the same results (phone "turns on," but display never lights up).
Any input on troubleshooting further?
- I've thought about looking at the two ribbon connector receivers for the display under a microscope to see if I can see any residue.
- I've also considered opening my wife's phone (same model) and swapping the batteries based on a probably false idea that if the battery might have gotten zapped, it could power the rest of the phone but not the display? Thinking not, as the power-ups I've attempted have had the USB charger plugged in, but easy experiment.
Would it be possible to short out just something related to the display on the motherboard so that the phone could run seemingly perfectly fine but just with no display? Just seemed so darn unlikely and that if I toasted some circuitry that a lot more would have been toasted in the process.
I plan to reassemble tonight and test for call reception (I think I can guess where the answer button is) and notifications (email myself and see if I get a vibrate/beep). That would confirm that the radios are also still functional.
Sort of at a loss and am not sure what else to do! I'm an engineer and even if the phone is toast... I'd really love to definitively figure out what's causing the issue.

[Q] Speaker issues and bendin

So my Z2 tablet arrived today through the mail, and I'm already getting disappointed. To being with, the speakers lower volume by themselves, without reducing the actual system volume. I noticed that is only for music, be it on Walkman, Spotify or YouTube. It starts with regular volume and then it changes by itself gradually, and I have to reset volume or turn the tablet around so it can come back to its regular state, but just for a minute before audio goes down again. I also noticed sometimes a little grain noise on the right side speaker, although I read at some places this is due to the waterproof seal, need confirming on this though. Also, I got it today, didn't do anything to it and it's already kind of bent. The package came factory sealed, so I'm assuming it bent on my hands. Really? That easy? Anyways, do you guys know a solution to this speaker problem? It doesn't seem to be a hardware condition, since regular videos works fine. Is the software doing some sort of bull**** and altering the volume? Thanks in advance.
Send it back. If possible for full refund. Then buy again from elsewhere.
