Good evening all, I've been wanting to flash either ktoonz or francos kernel on my n10, however, for peace of mind I'd like to have the factory kernel on hand to be able to flash back to stock if need be. I've been looking on the forum and github, but it seems all the source kernels are in "decompressed" format and not .IMG. If anyone has kernel 3.4.5-g4e6298b [email protected] in .IMG format or can direct me on how to make a copy of my stock kernel before I flash new ones that would be great. Thanks in advance!

Probly because its just easier to have to flash a kernel than restor from a potentially dated nandroid

I make a nandroid once every few weeks, but like jms said, its much easier to flash a ~3mb kernel in flash image gui than reboot to recovery and restore a 3+ gb nandroid.

I remember an answer to question from Craig Gomez where he said that the kernel is in the boot.img, does this mean that the boot files from a Nandroid backup contain the kernel as well???????

The latest Trickster MOD for Nexus 10 can also back up / restore your kernel. The option to do this is on the Tool menu in Trickster MOD. Fantastic tool for kernel adjustments on my GNex toro, and support for Nexus 10 is catching up quickly. Highly recommended.
EDIT: thanks to bigdog2k7 for catching my silly original mistake of identifying this as TWRP when I first posted. It's been a LONG day... guess it's time for sleep!

Sorry - I'm tired!!! I meant to post that Trickster MOD able to do the kernel backup -- my bad. Have to go back and edit that post - But, in the end, I've got TRWP as recovery (and maybe it does do kernel backups too? I haven't checked). But Trickster MOD is what I meant... Sorry for confusion - glad you caught it!

Perfect - that was my intention. Have to do this myself. My N10 is unlocked and rooted, TWRP installed, but I'm still on the stock kernel and ROM. Don't really feel compelled yet to try one of the custom ROMs until they mature a bit more. Hoping development gets as active as it's been for the Galaxy Nexus - that will make it fun to experiment on the Nexus 10.

You found a BOOT.IMG in what zip file? Your on stock JOP40D(4.2.1), correct? There is a factory download for JOP40C(4.2) that you can pull the file from but does that use the same kernel?

Craig's stock kernel .zip file on goomanager. I just opened the .zip and boot.img was one of the first files I saw. Not sure if its the kernel or not, I just ended up using the trickster mod to backup my most recent kernel from j0p40d.

That BOOT.IMG is based on KTManta with his changes so it isn't a stock kernel. It seems that using Trickster is the only route or maybe the TWRP backup/restore of the Boot files only.
Why don't you just do a backup of your ROM if your on stock .. And do an advanced restore of just the boot .

Hey there!
So I've read a bit lately on rooting my S2 and what not (as I decided to give it a go), and after flashing CWM Touch to my S2 I loved it and found it so much easier to install ZIP's and what not. However, on boot it disappeared, then to find that it was only a temporary Flash and when I rebooted the phone, it simply reverted back to the normal CWM.
Now before asking me to use Google or search for a thread, by god I did that. And after looking for almost 2 hours, I found nothing that gave me a definite answer whether it was possible or not. And so this is why I'm creating a thread.
So is it possible to flash CWM touch on my S2 permanently (like other phones have), or do I have to stick with the volume/power button edition.

The recovery, it's part of the kernel so which ever version of ClockworkMod the kernel shipped with that will always be there. If you really want touch recovery, you can flash Siyah Kernel and you'll be rooted and have its touch recovery.

Hmm I hoped that wasn't the case.
But isn't there a way to use ODIN3 to flash the kernel with a custom recovery, such as the CWM touch?
Sorry if that sounds stupid, I just am new to all this.
Not sure if you are allowed to bump this or not, but I just did.
Really want to know if it is possible to flash CWM touch on the kernal guys!

Why don't you just keep a touch cwm.zip file in your download folder and flash that after you flash a new rom?

And I do have the CWM touch zip in my internalSD but there isn't and point flashing it if everytime I reboot the phone and it goes back to the stock kernel.
I just want to know if there is a method possible to flash CWM touch into the kernel, and make it permanent, or at least fine a .tar version of it so I can flash it using odin

Edited. Sorry, I re-read the thread. As already stated, you'll need to flash a kernel that has the version of recovery you want. If you want a different version of recovery with a specific kernel, you'll need to start making your own kernels.

Well I cannot find a .tar version of CWM touch so I guess I won't be able to flash the kernel.

It's in the kernel. Check out RedPill. It has touch recovery.

Why don't you just look at the kernels in the development section, specifically for one with touch recovery? You could have found all the available options and tried them out by now.
Or are you just being lazy?

No I'm not lazy, sorry if I came across that way. I am usually one to simply find something on my own, but for this I simply cannot.
I've looked and cannot find what I asked for in the OP, and am still looking and found nothing. So I simply asked a question to make sure that there isn't a possibility that it can be done.
Anyway it doesn't seem possible at the moment, so I guess I'll wait.
After reading over lots and lots of threads, I finally got up the courage to root my phone.

I flashed the "Kernel + Modem + Cache + Rooted UCLE5 System Package" using Odin, downloaded Mobile Odin, and then flashed the safe Siyah 4.3.3 kernel w/o mic swap to avoid bricking due to the eMMc bug. Everything seems to be working fine. I have Superuser, Mobile Odin, and CWM Recovery.
My question is what are my ROM choices and how do I go about installing them?
I'f I'm reading the instructions correctly in the thread with the rooting instructions, I only have the three options for kernels in that thread and I MUST use a w/o mic swap version.
On the Siyah thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1592228, the only ROMs listed that work with w/o mic swap Siyah are Criskelo and UCLD3. Are these my only choices for ROM?

You can use any rom you want. It will come with its own kernel and overwrite the one you have

"You must use an ICS kernel, and it must work with Samsung firmware, and be the no-mic-swap version. If you install a Gingerbread kernel the phone will not boot."
Sorry, it's all a bit confusing to me.

Just do as Pirate says and you will be fine. Dont worry about the kernel because the rom you want will have the appropriate kernel packaged in

it means that if you use an ALTERNATE kernel, which a lot of people like to do, then you must abide by those guidelines. all roms come packaged with a 'recommended' kernel....just flash one and you will see.

Use any EFS Backup App

Good choice for a first ROM. When you get bored with that Shostock3 is really nice but wait until 1.5 comes out. It has some fixes that will polish it up nicely.

Would going to SHOStock3 require a wipe? I understand that upgrading to new versions of an existing ROM usually does not, but since this is a different ROM it seems like it would require the full wipe.
What is the easiest way to retain as many of my settings, etc... as possible when doing full wipes? I have Titanium Backup already. Is there another program that will help me retain more?

Yes on the full wipe before flashing the new ROM.
What else are u trying to retain besides apps and their data? If that's all TiBu is fine

It would be nice if I didn't have setup e-mail everytime, but if I can keep my apps and their data with TiBu, that should be fine.

Once you get accustomed to it, flashing with a full wipe isn't too bad. Make a nandroid backup in case you decide to go back. And I would recommend you buy the full version of titanium back up to get the batch features, and support the developer. It is probably the most important app for those that flash regularly.
I can fully wipe and flash and have everything back up and running the exact same way it was in like 10 minutes. But I like the chance to start fresh
I have been trying to flash Imonseyon leankernel v5.1 for awhile now and I'm having issues... I don't know if the link doesn't work or what the deal is. I want the 184v undervolt bc I have been having crazy battery drain.. Everytime I flash it I get a status 2 in TWRP. Any suggestions..

What rom are you using?
If it's a Sense based GB rom, did you grab the Sense kernel?
If it's an AOSP GB rom, did you grab the Aosp kernel?
If it's an ICS rom, it won't work.

Since TWRP 2.3 is based on AOSP jelly bean sources, TWRP now uses recovery API 3 instead of 2. Some zips may no longer work if the developer is using an out-of-date update-binary.
This API change should not be a problem on newer devices, but older devices will probably encounter several zips that need to be updated.
If needed, you can try using this update-binary that was compiled with current sources.
It goes in your zip file in the META-INF/com/google/android folder. If you're getting a status error 2 during zip install, then an outdated update binary is almost certainly to blame.

Ok thank you so much! FAST response lol. Would there be another recovery that is better to use or it doesn't matter?? Currently I am using your, I believe, ICS rooted debloated ROM stock/rooted. I was on liquidsmooth aosp and cm7 thundershed switching between them to get a feel for them... But for some reason I tried to do a full wipe and then reinstall from my restore of those two roms and try the leankernal, it's saying failed after I updated to TWRP 2.4.3

There is a backup bug in the latest release of Twrp. Switch to 4ext and your backups may work again. Someone posted on the n7 he could restore backups in Twrp from the previous version with the version he made them with but restoring backups on the latest version couldn't restore those

The zip I was referring to, was the kernel zip you were trying to flash.
And if you have run my rom, you should know I suggest using 4ext recovery.
It's mentioned in all my rom OP's.

Good luck with the 184mhz, I can not use that on my phone, always does the deep sleep of death.... thats not a good thing.
As for a ROM, I always suggest one of Santod's ... really any of them lol

Dude so far no problems with 184mhz.. Speed is no issue, no lag, no reboots, but I'll have to put it through the 24hr test to fully see how it does. And I charge my battery to 100% when installed it, approx. 4hr 41mins with pretty much none stop usage.. at 72% now. On the old kernal I would have been dead..
I have flashed paranoidandroid 3.15 on my galaxy s3 a couple weeks ago, aside the occasional screen that win't turn on I haven't had any problem, but I set my mind on flashing a new kernel in order to be able to change thez governor. I tried to flash air kernel on, I did exactly what I was told: Boot into recovery, clear cache/delvik, installed kernel from sd card, and rebooted. But after the phone being rebooted, I still had the stock kernel.
My question is, why did this happen, and how do I fix it?

Well, I don't really know either of them, I don't mind stock, but I want to change things, sometimes it just isn't up for the task, or uses up battery when I would rather it didn't, without even knowing what they do, and looking around, I found the perseus kernel, I would like some opinions on the kernel, I would be very grateful if you told me if it fits me, if it's compatible with ParanoidAndroid, and finally if you have a better suggestion for a kernel.

I've looked through DNA Q&A as well as general Q&A but I couldn't seem to find the answer.
I'm running slimbean and saw that there was a recommendation to use a specific crpalmer kernel. I have downloaded the kernel and I saw its .zip so I may just flash it in my recover I'm assuming. Correct?
Also, what if I don't like it? Do I need to retain a copy of my current kernel, is it available here, or is it already in the ROM's zip? I looked at the ROM and kernel zip files and they both appear to have contents for boot.
Finally, is there an order to install the kernel? If my assumption of the ROM also having a kernel then i'm guessing I should install the kernel after the ROM?

im stalking you lol.
yes just flash it make sure its the AOSP one if you are running slimbean. if you are flashing a fresh rom, make sure you let the rom boot up first and settle before you flash a kernel (or anything else for that matter). you probably wont dislike crpalmers kernel, but in TWRP you can make a back up of just the /boot partition, not sure if you can in CMW though. you could also dirty flash the rom.
and if you have more questions, just keep asking them on the same thread. dont start a new one, its causes clutter. also you can quote people and it notifies them, so they know you responded.

Well. I "soft bricked" my phone for lack of a better word. I used that kernel in the thread from slimbean and phone went black after flashing HTC screen twice...thank goodness for ADB reboot recovery. But I reinstalled back and all is well. Wish I could post in that exact forum.

really? thats weird. did you wipe the dalvik cache after you installed the kernel? i dont use aosp or CMW, but it shouldnt be any different.
I did not wipe davlik cache. Apparently I should try that...I didn't know. Maybe I'll get up the courage again tomorrow.

Hi,
Can u d/l the latest aosp kernel from crpalmer.
Chk 2nd post of my slimbean thread. It was not updated.
Below steps for installing kernel only ::
1. DL zip file
2. Wipe cache and dalvik cache
3. Flash zip file.
Make sure u flash ROM and gapps first. Let it boot up.
Then try with above mentioned steps for kernel

Thanks to both of you. I checked the forum, followed the directions, and successfully installed the kernel.
