[Q] Won't boot past recovery with custom kernel. - Asus Eee Pad Transformer Prime

Hey everyone.
I've had this issue for about as long as I remember, and never really cared enough to get to the bottom of it until recently. I have had on and off success with various roms either working and booting or not and getting me caught in a recovery loop, and so far I've isolated the issue to whether or not the rom comes with a custom kernel. For example, right now I am running the AndroWook 1.51 on the 10.4.2.17 base with the stock kernel and no bloat. I never made a NVFlash, but that's never caused an issue, mostly because I've had success in recovering from bad flashes in the past. But I digress...
I was really hoping to try the Energy Rom because from what I was reading it was loads faster than AndroWook. When I first tried to install the zip in recovery it puts me into another boot loop, but restoring and wiping and installing back to AndroWook lets me boot again (Again, only with the stock kernel option. For those unfamiliar, it comes with a slew of different kernels to choose from).
I guess in the end I'd like to bring my tablet on par with my Nexus 4's performance. I know benchmarks don't mean much (especially since it'd be something like 5000 compared to my phone's 20K on AnTuTu), but I'd like to have an excuse to use my tablet a little bit more. I would like to try and get a nice high powered kernel on this thing and overclock it to hell since I have the dock for extra battery.
Anyways guys, any input you could provide would be much appreciated. I'm familiar with the workings of Samsung and LG units, but this tablet is really unlike anything that I've worked with before, and I just haven't really had the time to get down and dirty with the thing.
Thanks,
Horvaticus

All i can tell you is check with flumpster over in androwook (hairybean) if he cant sort it out no one can....

Here's the thing though, it shouldn't matter who made the rom or not, because the problem applies to ANY Kernel that I try to install. I'm going to try some things and report back if I solve the issue. Any more input is appreciated though.

Really disappointed with S2!

Hi,
I bought my GS2 less than a week ago, and I'm really disappointed with it!
I rooted and installed custom rom and kernel the day I got it, and since then I've witnessed literally tens of fatal bugs that cause dirty shutdown(Usually I need to remove the battery). Also, apps force close too often. And on top of that I find my device very slow!
I had SE Arc S before GS2. I wanted S2 because I wanted better performance. I didn't get the performance, my Arc was way faster, even despite the two times lower benchmark scores. I'm using Apex Launcher, and every time I scroll the screen, I can clearly see the wallpaper "flashing", seems like it's too "heavy" for a dual-core CPU and probably for the best mobile GPU! Also, when I open a folder, it lags notably!
I have tested about ten different roms, including AOKP(RR & Foxhound), Samsung stock(Omega & Wanam) and MIUI(RGUI and some other which's name I don't remember). Also kernels like Sayah & NEAK. So far, I haven't got a stable nor a fast experience!
I know this isn't the S2 that is known for its performance and quality, this is something different! What could possibly be the cause of my problem? Games run well, but despite that, my phone is slower than a Sony Ericsson(single core & Adreno)!
Please help me, I know S2 can do better!
Mayby you installed a buggy and slow rom and kernel? Flash CM7 or a stock rom and you will be surprised
Edit:
I see that you already tried other roms, go back to the shop you bought it, mayby they can help you...

Your experience is different to 90% of people who post here.
There are no shortcuts to having a phone setup/running the way you want to.
I emphasised that last bit because anyone who offers you anything but the most generic advice will be telling you what works for them, with the way they use the phone & the way they have it set up. If you follow said advice, chances are you won't end up with the results you're looking for.
My advice is to either persevere & keep tinkering with the phone (if you're not a person who likes to do this kind of thing, you're probably in the wrong place), or sell it & get something else.
You're obviously looking for shortcuts/quick fixes, and I'm telling you there aren't any.
Try Ollo Rom, def the best and most stable from IMO

hi
this is very interesting. its some time i don't respond to posts. i am no guru to galaxy s2 but i think the phone is ok. first install stock rom to see if the phone is ok. i mean is charging ok and has no hardware problems. maybe its something hardware and u can take it back to the service and for that u need stock. i think u rushed a little custom roms install. if device is ok then flash a custom kernel like cf root or speedmod kernel to have root and use titanium backup to freeze some bloatware. install apex launcher and see if u get lag. use an app like 2nd core to see if your cpu is working with 2 cores and has hotplug ok. and cpu spy for deep sleep issues. then install battery monitor widget from 3c to see the heating from battery. it should stay between 25 and 41 celsius. then if is ok install a custom rom. i tested wanam, vk and now neatromlite. best satisfaction was with 2.3.6 la4 rom from gb by krinyo but that was in gb.
I recommend Resurrection Remix 2.3

I'm not usually "question asker" persons, I tend to solve my problems myself. But as said, this problem is very absurd since this phone is a true high end. I'm on Cyanogen9, a rom that I've had really good memories(well CM7 anyway)and I'm finding this little bit faster. This isn't a solution anyway, just avoiding the problem. I'm gonna try to go back to completely stock and customize it again.
Thanks for answers, really appreciate.
Ps. I'm don't fancy going back to Gingerbread

Try resurrection 2.4 or rootbox. They are the best roms for the s2, in my opinion. You shouldn't be disappointed.

That's a really good idea.
Go back to an ICS stock rom you know works fairly well, and go from there. Root the phone first, do a Nandroid backup before you make any other changes/flash any custom roms so you have a backup of a good setup as close as possible to stock (just with a rooted kernel).
Then you can try some roms out, maybe try out a couple of kernels. Best way to approach it is not to make too many changes at once I.E if you flash a rom, try it out for a bit with the supplied kernel before you start trying other kernels with it.
BetterBatteryStats (search for it on here/Google Play) can be invaluable so far as pinning down & eliminating any apps/processes that are causing unwanted battery drain. Also, give benchmarks too much of your time. They're not even close to an approximation of real world use of the phone.
And the other best bit of advice I can give you is read. A lot. Then read some more. Then keep reading till your eyes fall out. Particularly read anything you can get your hands on relating to the particular rom/kernel you're wanting to try out. Read the whole thread (even if it's 100's of pages). That's how you pick up little tricks/knowledge, by reading & then trying stuff out.
Edit - Also, the moment you root your phone & before you do anything else, get Hellcat's kTool from Google Play & backup your EFS. Keep a copy on your external SD card in the phone if you have one, and definitely keep a copy on your PC (and on an external drive or CD/DVD if you're really paranoid). You'd be surprised how many people we get on here with borked EFS/no IMEI & most (90%) don't have a backup.

I had something similar happen to me. I wanted to cry. But try this first (nobody likes hearing a grown man crying).
1- Restore your nandroid backup to get back to stock (you did do a nandroid back... Did you?)
2- Flash a STOCK ICS Rom. Any will do. As long as it's stock.
3- Proceed to flash any custom ICS rom of your choice
4- Flash any kernel of your choice
5- Enjoy
Thing is, some custom roms don't play nicely when you upgrade from gingerbread to ICS directly. Doing the above mentioned should do the trick.

Try stock ROM with speedmod kernel. Or if you want batterylife, try undervolting kernels that are based on speedmod, like phenomenal or apollo kernel. Try also dorimanx kernel

My Note experience

Howdy yall,
First I want to thank all the hard working people making all these crazy ROMs. This place has been a fantastic resource as I started messing around with my Note.
My first smartphone was the TELUS Samsung Galaxy SIIX (SGH-989D). Like the Note, it was given a beautiful SAMOLED and dual core 1.5 snapdragon. My SIIX shipped with Gingerbread 2.3.5, which I never bothered to upgrade. It ran GB beautifully, hardly a stutter to be found anywhere. When I damaged it a bit, I decided to upgrade to the Note instead of fixing/replacing the SIIX. When I got the SIIX I thought it was massive (4.5"). When I got the Note, hooooooly, it seemed comically large and made the SIIX look like a baby.
Having said that, I've finally gotten used to the Note's size and realized how awesome it is. I was expecting an experience similar to the SIIX. I was sorely disappointed as the Note felt much, MUCH laggier. The Note shipped with Gingerbread 2.3.6. When I heard of the ICS upgrade, I figured I'd give that a chance instead of changing to the S3.
I tried one of the basic ICS ROMs from here. While certain aspects appeared to be significantly smoother, other areas weren't and I wasn't really impressed. I then tried the FJ ROM which was pretty cool, but still wasn't really what I was hoping for. I then tried the Electron ROM which wasn't too bad. I had heard (good things) of Paranoid Android. When I tried that, I was at first confused because I could not get Google Play or anything. I finally read enough to realize I had to flash the gapps myself, which was fine. However, I could not get the camera to work properly in that one which was a deal breaker (it was the unofficial ROM though).
I tried "The Collective - AoCP - CP1", and it was by far the most impressive. Everything seemed so much snappier, sslauncher was really cool too. For some reason, regardless of the ROM, apex launcher just lags too much to be acceptable for a 1.5GHz device IMO.
I tried flashing one of the overclock kernels, and I thought I had bricked the Note. It would stay stuck at "SAMSUNG" when booting up. I was still able to get into CWM, but all the previously working ROMs would fail despite wiping everything multiple times. I finally found a stock ROM in TAR format and flashed it using Odin, which got me up and running again. However I'm still not able to flash other ROMs for some reason, I wonder if I've permanently messed something up.
For some reason I was never able to get the official ICS update to work through the OTA process. I managed to find a proper stock TELUS 4.0.4 ROM and flash that via Odin, but still I'm left somewhat puzzled. I don't have the ICS Camera or the ICS Gallery! My SMS looks like it did in Gingerbread, not like any of the ICS ROMs I played with. Phone dialer and Contacts list look the same, though I'm not sure the stock ICS update made many changes to those.
I feel that ICS (let alone JB) has a lot of promise, I'm just trying to find the best setup. I would like to have a nice ROM that has none of the bloat (official TELUS ROM is 500+MB where some perfectly featured ROMs are 100MB+). However, I DON'T want to sacrifice critical functionality or stability. Is this wishful thinking?
Sorry if this was long winded, but any comments or input would be awesome. I've been having a blast, the Note is one sweet smartphone...errr... phablet?

In Need Of Advice For Starting Over

First, an explanation of my situation:
I bought a Galaxy Note at the beginning of the summer. All-in-all, I was pretty happy with it. It was a much improved experience over my Atrix, which was in poor condition by the time I switched over.
I wasn't able to root at first as I only had access to a Mac, and there were innumerable issues in doing so - Odin was PC only, WINE ports of it failed to recognize the phone, the Mac equivalent of Odin (I am spacing on its name right now) didn't work with the Note, etc.
When ICS was officially released, I tried to update to it via Kies. Kies on Mac is a ****storm. It's incredibly buggy, toolbars and menus don't display correctly, it has trouble recognizing the device, etc. I was unable to get it to make a backup, but I eventually managed to load the ROM onto it...
... and that's when the real problems started.
My battery life has turned to crap. Everything runs incredibly slow. Everything's super buggy. Apps force-close all the time. My MicroSD card ended up getting corrupted - half of my music disappeared, of what was left only 1/3rd actually worked. I just reformatted my MicroSD, backing everything important up, etc.
I've been dealing with this for around a month now, as whenever I come to the forum I have no idea where to even start to fix this. I'm up for wiping everything and starting over, and I do have access to a Windows XP machine now so that may be easier... but I don't even know where to go from there.
---------------------------------------------------
That's why I'm here - I need advice. I need advice as to how to clean up the current mess my phone has turned into and start over. I need advice as to what ROM to try and how to go about loading it. I need advice as to whether to root and how to do so. I need advice as to whether to install a CWM, which one to use and how to go about doing so.
Here is what I am looking for, ordered from most important to least:
Battery life is important to me. I loved how long the battery lasted before my attempted upgrade to ICS... now it lasts maybe 1/3 of the time.
I want something that will work - I want stability. No more constant force-quits of every freaking app.
A smooth, fast UI would be preferable.
Feature packed. I like the thought of cutting edge features of newer (or custom) versions of Android being incorporated - but this is far less important to me than battery life and stability.
My preferred method of installation would be using my Mac - but as I said, Windows XP is a very easy option for me as well. I could also install a newer version of Windows if need be, but would prefer not to go through that...
Thanks in advance for any help, advice and recommendations! ^_^
Get Odin and root your phone...
Download and flash TWRP... http://teamw.in/project/twrp
download a ROM of your choice
boot into the recovery ..wipe--->>cache/dalvik cache/ wipe ROM/factory reset..>then go to the install and flash your ROM...
These are very rudimentary instructions I hope they helped a bit...good luck
Do you have an idea for what ROM you like or want? Couple of great ROMs..for stockish check out flappjaxxx's for jellybean check out manelscout4life..stable and fast

Techno is onto the correct answer, unless of course you are truly wanting the stock version back.
Kies and OTA updates are often flawed, and give the end user exactly the type of problems you are stating.
However, if you want a return to stock, the information can be found in the "note super everything thread" located as a sticky at the top of the general note section.
But I do agree with techno, that a root and flash of a quality custom rom is the way to go......g
Thanks a lot, both of you!
As to what ROM I want, honestly that's one of the reasons I have been procrastinating so much -- I have no idea whatsoever. There's such an overwhelming number of options out there, of basic flavors (ICS, JB, GB, CM7, etc.) and tens of derivatives of each one made by different people. I have no idea where to even start making such a decision.
I can tell you this much. On my Atrix, I started with the stock Motoblur-Froyo, flashed GingerBlur, disliked it's bugginess but dealt with it for almost a year, then flashed the CM7-based Neutrino. I wasn't very happy with how skimpy the ROM was but stuck with it until I got my Note. I was pretty satiated with the stock ROM, but decided to upgrade to ICS due to the promise of a better UI, increased functionality and especially a faster camera. While my experience with ICS was terrible, I could see myself enjoying a functional, non-buggy version...
Basically, I have no idea what ROM or even what base OS version I am looking for. That said, I do know the criteria that matter to me, as stated prior:
Battery Life
Stability
Smooth UI
Cutting-Edge Feature Packed
I can't really think of any features I am specifically looking for, other than under-the-radar tethering and top-notch camera speed & functionality .
As I have no attachment to any specific OS version, suppose that would mean that if battery life, stability and smoothness issues are equal amongst ROM variants, I would be looking for a Jellybean ROM - as it would be most packed with new features... right?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1664980
That is the best stockish ICS experience you can get and keeps all the functionality of your phone including the spen. He also offers a jellybean ROM but honestly to find the best JB rom for you just read through the threads read and REREAD THE OP of those ROMs..jellybean is fun and cool but not 101% stable yet..people still getting random reboots and some are losing there APN settings..so maybe just flashing ics and playing with those ROMs is best for you for now..FYI the above rom is smooth as silk and great battery life
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I717 using xda app-developers app
Again , I agree with Techno, and the rom he posted is the one I'm using to type this.
Flappjaxxx is a fine developer, and he has packed this UCLF6 build with full functionality , and much more.
He is , and will continue to be my top pick for quality builds and performance ...g
This is all really wonderful advice - thanks again!
I guess I have a few last questions:
What is the best way to root at this point? If I recall, there are multiple ways to root via Odin... is there a specific one you would recommend for my current situation (read: current buggy ICS firmware)? A link would be very much appreciated, as the roadmap thread is a bit... overwhelming with all of the options.
Are there any MODs you recommend I install after I have my new flappjaxxx ROM in place? Will tethering work off the bat? Will all of the Gapps (Gmail, Navigation, etc.) be there for me to use? Will I need to install anything else, or is there any recommendations that you have?
Thanks again a ton - you've both been enormously helpful!
Also, I just noticed that the recovery you linked me to (http://teamw.in/project/twrp) has no option for the Galaxy Note...
EDIT: It turns out you linked me to the wrong page - to TWPR 1. Here's the link to TWRP 2.2, for anyone else who comes across this thread: http://teamw.in/project/twrp2
Just my 2 cents. After you get straightened out, you may want to take a look here.

[Q] Not sure what to do...

I have owned more android phones than any non dev has a right to lol, and never before have I run stock this long
Thing is any other phone I have owned there has always been at least one rom that sticks out to me, but there just isn't with this phone. It's not that I do not think any are great, I just have not seen anything that jumps out to me.
So anyhow I was hoping maybe I might be able to get some people to share some of their favorite features, or things that are missing that do not work etc from roms currently available for hte Verizon LG G3.
Thanks in advance!

I know the feeling, to an extent. I'm still very much AOSP-inclined, but as far as "stock" roms go, you could definitely get a lot worse than LG's (cough, touchwiz, cough ). Anyway, At this point I've bounced back and forth between 4.4.4 roms and 5.0(.1) ones, as I can't find exactly what I want. On one hand, I like the bleeding edge of 5.0, but on the other, stability is real nice haha...which LG's stock offers, for the most part. I wish that there was just one "rock-solid" 4.4.4 rom out there, but every one I've tried has noticeable issues to some extent. They're often not severe, but they're enough to ideally want a little better. Back on my S3 I ran slimkat, and outside of battery life (which might have just been largely my old battery), it was easily my favorite and most stable daily driver. I'm currently running the latest build of the unofficial slimkat, but I think that the timing of when this device got unlocked, and all the hype about lollipop, etc. it seems like a rock-solid stable 4.4.4 may not exist for a while, if ever. Thing is, 4.4.4 to me really has a lot of benefits still over 5.0. It's not quite as speedy, but being able to run xposed, etc. are big plus'es imho. Just my 2c
I find myself in the same position. I really like xposed therefore I am rooted and running stock with xposed installed. Haven't tried any roms and will probably wait until there is a stable 5.0 rom.
I'm in the same boat, this is my first LG phone and I actually think the stock rom is pretty nice after I rooted, removed the bloat, and installed exposed, I usually run a rom for a few weeks until I get bored with it and look for something new, usually flash back and forth from aosp to stock, but I may keep it the way it is for a while, like the op said, I dont really see anything that jumps out to me and says "FLASH ME" either, I like lollipop but none of the roms had anything much to offer and I missed tweaking with exposed. the most important things to me are being able to root and tweak things and a rom that runs smooth and stable, stock has done this so far.

So slow it's unusable... New ROM? Which one? Other ideas?

Hello,
I have my original TF201 and it's between treated extremely carefully and not used a ton. So it's in perfect shape. I reset it sometime ago so that other family members could use it as well. It's back to factory reset with the latest official update on it. I installed several apps that I would commonly use and the performance slowed to where is literally unusable. Clicks take forever to register, pages take minutes to load, etc. I uninstalled as much as I could and that helped somewhat but it's nothing like the performance it used to have. So, from what I've read, I'm thinking that the performance of that last official update is the problem and it might be time to get into rooting and flashing a different ROM. I've rooted before but it's between several years so I'm not an expert.
I just wondered if this sounds like the best thing to do for my performance issues. If so, which ROM would you recommend? I'm not stuck on any particular version of Android more interested in what your experiences are with which ROMs runs the best on this unit. If KatKiss is recommended, would you go for V30 or one of the older ones? Another post said that, at that time (maybe two months ago), people were having issues with V30 and I'm not sure if those issues have been resolved. I'm OK with a Marshmallow, Jellybean ROM too. Just any help on which direction to go would be really wonderful.
Thank you so much!

I found Katkiss LP v26 worked really well. I am now on the Marshmallow version #22 and so far that is really smooth and quick.
Make sure you upgrade to the right bootloader then follow the instructions in the Forums to the letter.
Good luck
I am currently using KatKiss v30. Was in a similar situation to you where my Prime got very little use due to being slow / unusable. KatKiss v30 has been pretty stable for me as long as it is kept below 1.8Ghz, highly recommend trying it out if your Prime is anywhere near as bad as mine used to be.
KatKiss v30 is the way to go !!!!!!! really not much of a difference in user experience with my galaxy tab s2 ))
