Is it possible to enter recovery mode without root?
I've got an issue with my S3 whereby every time it reboots it comes up with the message unable to download please try again later. Then it'll randomly freeze or reboot. So after trying a few different things I've decided to wipe the cache partition, however I can't enter recovery mode. I've tried holding down volume up, home and power and the android image briefly flashes up but if I release the buttons it just boots up, if I keep them held it just power cycles continuously.
Also I tried holding down volume down, home and power and got a strange message warning of the perils of installing a custom OS and asking if I wanted to go ahead, I didn't. Is this message normal or is my phone trying to do something weird? Thanks.
Release the buttons as soon as you see the recovery, don't hold them. Also, a custom recovery would help
Just managed to do it thanks. However wiping the cache has made no difference to my issue. The only option it leaves is a factory reset and failing that exchanging it for a new phone.

I'm trying to fix a friend's note(sgh-i717r) and it won't boot into recovery. When pressing the button combo, it just keeps vibrating and when I let go it's stuck on the samsung logo. I can still go into download mode and flash different custom recoveries or firmwares with odin but I can't get past the samsung logo.
I'd really appreciate some advice because my friend can't even use his phone at all until then.
Is your power button getting stuck? ?
This problem is very common ...and the device just loops ...g
I don't think so since I can get into download mode without problems
What button combo are you using? Make sure you let go of the power button after the first vibration and continue to hold volume up and down or it will keep vibrating.
Gubment Cheeze
With the right combo...even a device that is stuck, is not really stuck, as the same combo will boot you to either the recovery, or the DL mode.....
Are you sure that recovery is present ??
You did mention that a flash of recovery was successful, but have you seen it ??....as it may have failed, even though odin says "pass"....g

For download mode I use power + vol down, and recovery I use power + vol up + vol down and after the first vibrate I let go of everything except vol up. I was able to enter into recovery before trying to flash superuser but now it's stuck.

The recovery is there as I used it to try and flash superuser but it gave me an error about an incorrect md5(and I know it shouldn't be giving that problem because I used the superuser file from the stickies that the majority of people had no problems with) so I tried using the latest version of twrp instead of cwm.
Well...
I suggest you go into download mode, and push a factory image to the device via Odin, and start over completely...
It's looking like the device has a bad recovery image, but if DL mode is still there, you are able to save it by a restore.....
Go into the super thread at the top of the general section, and scroll down the first post to the restore area, and you will find the links and instructions to put the device back to stock, and re-root....
At least that way, you know where you started from, and the device will get cleaned out for a fresh try again....g
Well I was undervolting and underclocking my i9100 for a few months and it would suffer from freezes and stuff like that nothing much as I would be able to perform a hard reset and reboot with my phone completely working everytime that happens. However today, I just locked my phone after taking a picture and I could not unlock it after that. I pressed the power button and home button but the screen would not turn on. So i just took out the battery and tried booting the phone. It was stuck in a bootloop where the boot animation would just keep on playing. So i force shutdown it and booted it into recovery. I had CWM 6.0.4.6 installed and when i booted into recovery, it gave me the message it cannot mount something and cannot load last kmsg and blah. I took no notice and tried to format cache. During this point, the recovery hanged and i force shutdown my phone again. After which, I could never turn on my phone again. No splash screen no nothing. I think it is bricked. And yea btw my usb port is not working anymore and it can only be used for charging. And i was running cm11 infected. Can you all please help me thanks!
so no recovery nor download mode?
Sadly, no

Yep i cannot even boot into anything no splash screen no nothing pressed the power button for like so long i even removed the battery for 2 hours and popped it back in not working
Try this - take out battery, then press and hold volume down+home+power and put battery back without releasing buttons. This may get you into a download mode where you can flash stock jb via odin.
Hi, android noobie here, I have a rooted m8 that keeps rebooting after updating the at&t software.
I get the pop up that says AT&T software is available. If I clicked on continue it reboots to teamwin during boot up and once i reboot to system it just reboots itself every 30 secs or so.
I had to do a factory reset just to get my phone working again. But now the update screen is popping up again and I have to keep it under 35% so it doesn't auto update and keep pressing remind me later.
How do I disable this auto update? or is there an easier way to make the phone go back to stock since I really don't have any use of a rooted device besides watching MLB games...
Thanks for the help.

If I'm not mistaken, you would need to un-root your phone prior to installing any OTA Updates from AT&T. Also, you should only install the OTA Updates while using the stock recovery. So, you should re-flash the stock recovery and then attempt to complete the OTA Update. After that, you could re-install TeamWin, re-root and prosper.
Refer to this link on reverting back to stock... http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2721435

Good rule of thumb, do not install OTA updates on any modded Android device, without at a minimum doing thorough research on what will happen.
Depending on the device and the update in question, attempt to install an OTA on a modded device will remove root, possibly plug existing exploits (and render the phone unable to be rooted), or put you in a boot loop (as you have experienced).
In particular, OTAs require stock recovery in order to install. So if you have custom recovery installed, this is why the OTA install is failing (and why it keeps booting into TWRP).
Also, there is little (if anything) contained in the OTAs that doesn't get posted in a safe format (flashed from custom recovery) in the Development section soon after the OTAs start to roll out.

Hi, i have a HTC One M8, and when my first update popped, i was very enthuziast.
I accepted to download the update, installed it, and... the problem appeared. The phone made his restart after update... and continued to do so over and over again. (Vibrate/HTC screen on for 30 secs/screen off and so on)
I checked the HTC website for solutions, i entered live chat with a consultant, and he asked me to start the Hard reset procedure. To do that, while turned off, you have to press both volume keys, and press the power button. The phone will enter in the Bootloader menu where you have some options. But... tell me, how to do that if the phone restarts continously? you have about 1-2 seconds to do that, while the screen is off. It gave me a hardtime to do that... Finnally, i managed to enter the Bootloader menu.
There... you have 2 options: (using volume up/down to select, and power button to select) you can select to poweroff(shutdown) the phone - and the phone will shutdown,
or you can turn off the fastboot, and the phone will restart normally.
The thing is that when you restart your phone normaly, while fastboot on, the phone skips some steps, and go directly to to turn it on and show you the startscreen.
When you make a major update, like system upgrade, when the phone restarts, he needs to load all the boot setting. And here is the problem. If you have fastboot on, and make a major update, the phone will enter in this ****ty cicle of continous restarts.
Remember to deactivate this Fastboot before you update!

This is not correct. To force a reboot, you hold power and vol up (not both vol buttons). Then, when its restarting (the moment the screen goes dark and before the white boot screen appears) you let go of both those buttons, and only hold vol down.

In the case of a bootloop (phone keeps restarting), all you need to do is hold vol down during one of the reboot cycles. The timing doesn't matter in this case. Just sit on the vol down button until the bootloader screen appears.

First, the FASTBOOT selection in bootloader is not the same as "Fast boot" in Settings>Power. The latter just makes the phone start faster from power OFF. The former is an adb (Android Debug Bridge) special mode that allows you to flash partitions from a computer.
Second, in bootloader, you should have the following selections:
FASTBOOT
RECOVERY
FACTORY RESET
SIMLOCK
CHECK SMARTSD
IMAGE CRC
SHOW BARCODE
Of course, its the FACTORY RESET option you want if you want to wipe the phone. Scroll down to (using vol keys) and select with power button.
On the bootloader screen, the active selection is the blue box with white text below the green phone info (hboot number, radio number, etc.). FASTBOOT should only be the default "active" selection if your phone is connected to a computer by USB. Otherwise the default selection in bootloader should be HBOOT.
Third, the "Fast boot" option in Settings>Power does not make a restart "faster" by skipping any steps. It just makes a start from power OFF faster. Its kind of a trick, where power OFF is not really off, but just a deeper sleep mode. A restart is always a restart, regardless of whether "Fast boot" is selected or not in Settings>Power.
Hi guys.
I seriously need help right now.
My friend bought an s2 i9100 in cheep which was stuck on bootloop and he thought it could be repaired.
so we don't know what caused the problem.
But i was surprised that few repair shops weren't able to fix it.
let me explain the problem:-
when we hold power button or plug in a charger it show the logo, goes into recovery and reboots repeating it in loop.
so whenever i charge it goes into this loop.
we can use volume up & down key in those 2-3 seconds in recovery but not the power key.
we can access download mode and it doesn't reboots automatically but going into recovery mode manually also start this loop.
it's like we are only going in recovery mode again & again.
i installed this file "I9100XWLPW_I9100ODDLPC_I9100DDLPB_HOME.tar.md5" through odin and also used the pit file "I9100_STOCK-System_2GB-Data_512MB-Preload.pit" but nothing changed.
i don't know what to do now.
i cant find any gingerbread rom to test.
i don't know how it can be fixed,
so please help me.
Update
After doing a lot of things I finally managed to boot into system but the problem is not solved.
I flashed i9100XXLSJ which had modem and CSC files other than the PDA only.
The device actually booted in system (just the samsung logo) but it was a bootloop.
This time I kept holding power button by which the bootloop stopped and it successfuly booted but power button is not working inside the system so I can't reboot, power off or even switch on the screen.
By holding down up vol + home + power for a considerable long time I can boot into recovery. But again the power button is not working so I can't select any option.
I flashed a cwm touch recovery which is working.
So can anyone tell me what is the problem here and what can I do to actually fix it.
If you have problems with flashing stock ROM, consider flashing a custom ROM, like Cyanogenmod.

Try flashing the 4.1.2 JellyBean leak ROM via ODIN linked in this thread (scroll down to you see "Another option for i9100"):

This will factory reset the device which may hopefully resolve your problems.

Actually the ROM you are talking about is the ROM which I flashed which is mentioned in my second post " update".
PDA = CODE_I9100XXLSJ.tar
PHONE = MODEM_I9100XXLS6.tar
CSC = CSC_HOME_OXX_I9100OXXLS1.tar.
That's how I got this far, previously it was impossible to boot into system.

In CWM touch recovery, you can swipe (or touch) to confirm the option.
Try factory reset. Reboot.
If that doesn't help, try wiping system, cache and data.
Let me know how that goes

Wiping data/factory reset and cache doesn't solve the problem.
There is format option in 'mounts and storage' so I formated system, data, cache & also emmc. But the bootloop is not gone. The only thing that is gone is the ROM because of those formats. I have yet to to install the ROM again.

It might be the problem of power button. Sometimes it boots as soon as I put the battery. It always boot when I plug in charger. Sometimes it boots after I press and hold the power key for maybe 15 second & sometimes it doesn't boot when holding power key & I have leave hold again to boot it. And important thing is when it boots, I have to hold the power key until the key lights up to stop it from bootloop but then the power is Jo longer functional in system. Same goes for recovery. But this is the only till nowROM which actually boots into system. Other ROMs were booting into recovery automatically.
I wanted to test cyanogenmod but I am not able to install twrp. I followed the steps here using HeimdallSuite https://twrp.me/devices/samsunggalaxys2i9100.html
I had no problem in the steps but the recovery is not actually replaced when I boot into it.
The recovery that I have currently is not able to flash isorec_twrp or any cyanogenmod directly. It always shows error code 7.
I am going to replace the power button with my friend's s2 (other friend who have an s2 laying around) only to see it works.
Anyways tell me how to install twrp successfuly.
The actual power button needs to soldered, I thought It would be a connector, so I am not going to do that. But as far as I can tell, the plastic button isn't the problem.

check the battery contacts...
After I updated to C.49, my phone is acting weird...
1) Power Button is not working properly
2) Random emergency Call Screen and Power Reboot/Off Screen.
3) When I tried hard rebooting to go into recovery....it shows recovery mode at bottom for 10s and the reboots again to recovery mode text at bottom. It does not go into Menu of selection of English and Chinese language. This continues infinite times...Until finally it decides to boot to main home screen. But the Power button and Emergency screen/Reboot screen issue continues..
4) I tried factory reset of system setting...Same issue remained.
5) I finally tried factory reset wiping all data..Since the Version is latest C.49, which I believe has issues, the Emergency screen and Power Reboot Screens and Power Button not functioning properly continues..
6) I downloaded CPH1861EX_11_OTA_0490_all_sWtP8RDIvyoU.ozip from realme support. Tried updating that software in the phone..
But it lead to point (3) which I stated above...Same vibrating/rebooting after every 3 to 5 secs but not going into recovery Mode..It continued for 1 full day until battery died..Then I charged the phone for sometime and it continued its same funky routine of infinite rebooting and stopping at recovery Mode text.
But, eventually, after few hours, it booted normally to main screen.....But the problem was still there.
7) Now, even if try to shut down..from Power reboot/off screen...It shuts but in few seconds reboot again to main screen. So I cannot even shut it down.
8) I may try to download C.48 version (2.16 GB) and update from SD Card somehow..I don't know if it will revert back to different Version...But gotta try.
Or if there is enhanced or latest or custom update newer than C.49 available in market. maybe I should root or install that.
Frustrating...
How to get rid of this bug? I guess have to wait for new patch or something or next update. Service Centers are not open..because of Lockdown in Mumbai.
Please help, if someone knows the solution or had to deal with similar issue.
