[Q] Orange UK 4.1.2 update? - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all,
Has anyone updated their Orange S3 to 4.1.2 through KIES? Does it include any bloatware or anything useful (unlikely).
Also, has anyone taken a dump of the FW?
Just wondering as I have not seen much coverage of this other than that it has been released, eventually.
Cheers
MS

I think most people on here will have flashed the unbranded firmware to be honest.
Could be wrong though....

Probably...
You are probably right, I am running the latest and greatest stock release, but live in hope that Orange will include Signal Boost in an update, one day.

I doubt EE will go to the trouble of a bespoke radio firmware for their network, the XXELLA modem is working fine for me on EE with 12Mbps speed recorded on occasion (why bother with 4G when H+ is delivering that?).
I'd suggest you try flashing a few of the 4.1.2 radio variants to see if your signal improves, but this may also decrease your battery life.

Orange Signal Boost is a UMA application for Orange -- it allows you to make/receive calls / SMS over wifi when you have no signal. It was in the GS2, but not in the GS3, unfortunately. I was really hoping it would come out as well as I have practically no signal where I live unless I am right next to a window.

Likewise, it is a shocking oversight that they have not brought this out for the S3. I have to stand in my kitchen if I want to use my phone! Sometimes that doesn't work either, so I have an excuse to go to the pub (I get signal there!).

Indeed
XXELLA does give good performance and I have tried modems galore, but when there are many houses between you and the base stations sometimes you just need some help!
On a slightly off topic note has anyone tried the BT Smartalk app? Although its just for outgoing calls its pretty handy for making calls against your BT allowance over WIFI.
If only we could have a seamless phone / wifi handover for calls.....I live in hope (and know that its been punted as a future before)
And I completely agree about the Signal Boost UMA side of things, its was super handy in my S2 when I occasionally ran a stock ROM or installed while rooted, plus I could make calls on the WIFI on the Underground in London, I do miss it!

Modem bad reception in Canada Galaxy s2

Hey all, i thought i would start a thread about an issue that many canadians seem to have with the GS2, it seems to have been beat to death but there is no actual solution.
Im currently using the GS2 with Telus, its a wcdma/3G/H/H+ carrier using the frequency 1900 mostly and 850 at times on the cdma network, i used so far KG3-KG6 i placed them in that order because KG6 is the latest i tried and has proven to give me better coverage but its still really bad..
I can connect to data but only outdoors or only when the reception is full bars, if i start to lose any bars there goes my data connection and i can no longuer use any services data/sms/mms/calls i literaly cant do anything..
This is a big issue as i know for a fact that you dont need a data connection to send sms. but it seems the galaxy s2 under the current modem firmware im using KG6 wont allow me to unless im on full data coverage...
My question is this, what is the best modem firmware to use according to the frequencies that i meantioned earlier 1900/850 WCDMA i dont mind using another country's modem as long as they are oriented towards the same frequencies that i need
My phone came from Korea and i know they use 2100/900 could that be the issue? Is my hardware oriented towards that? At this point anything could help and please feel free to post thanks
SL.

Hmm, I'm a SGS2 owner on TELUS as well and haven't had any problems so far, besides the GPS Lock Time which most people seem to complain about. It takes about 1 minute for the GPS to lock for me, but my data is fine. No dropped calls or sms problems here. My download speed as I checked last was at 8.31 Mbps down and about 2 Mbps up.
But again, having horrible GPS issues. Wish I could figure that one out
Sobai can u post your results to *#1234#
so i can compare my settings to yours.
I'm using KG6 on Rogers network and don't have fantastic reception either. For most situations it holds calls -- but buildings with lots of concrete I lose the signal completely. It's as if I'm not truly on the 850 band ... my G1 had the same problem until I flashed a Bell-specific modem, that solved the problem. I guess we'll have to wait until Bell launches the G2 here, we'll be able to swipe the modem again.
i have an imported gs2 that i am using on rogers and it doesnt drop calls, but i have had times in the past when it would show 3g but not download any data. once i turned airplane mode on and off data would work fine again. the best radio for me has been the kf2 modem in terms of not having the data stalling issue. i find that even if i show no bars of strength i can still download data with no issue.
if you are on telus i would make sure so set the wireless settings to 3g only so the phone doesnt try to look for a 2g signal.
KG2 on a Bell SGS2 on Rogers/Fido network in Vancouver.
GPS locks in seconds. no dropped calls. H+ all the time, never once saw a 3G symbol. no data dropouts.
over 7Mbps down on this network with the SGS2, when i had 1/3rd the speeds an HTC Desire. great reception in my office downtown, my apartment, everywhere i've been so far.
KG2 (not the stock canadian though), in Montreal on the Virgin/Bell network. So far no complaints on the data. Since I started messing w/ the firmware however, the connection is on 3G when idle and only switches to H+ when actually in use. From what i've been reading many people have been noticing this when flashing over the stock Canadian firmware.
On the other hand however, the GPS has been having a hard time establishing a lock (whereas it used to be quite speedy and precise before I flashed). Won`t be able to test whether this is a firmware problem untill the stock Canadian is released by Samsung.

Wow guys I appreciate the feedback I thought I was the only one with this issue! I will definitely give kf2 a try right now and I'll also download the 3G only data app and give it a try and I'll get back to u guys with some feedback. Thanks again
Btw I'm using, touch x 3.2 rom that has kg5 on and I did notice a little improvement in the reception but the data connectivity is still very spotty so I'll give kf2 a try but so far kg5 modem is definitely the best one I seen so far to use on telus. Btw anyone trying to use the galaxy s2 on fido, I was never able to get 3G at all to work I was stuck on edge.

Do you know how I would be able to set it up so that it stays locked on 3G? I tried the *#301279# trick and disabling hsdpa and hsupa with revision 99 but to no avail. Even if it shows full bars and 3G I still get no data connection and also I can't send or receive texts unless there is a data connection for some reason, have you guys had this issue??

i have never needed to mess around with that menu. you should be able to go to
settings
wireless network
mobile networks
network mode
select wcdma only
that will lock it to 3 only. if you keep having issues you might get a new sim card from telus as that might be causing you some issues
Do you have your apn configured properly for your provider? If it isnt your data definitely work. Other then that I havent had these issues in edmonton on kg6 or maybe I just dont know what to expect reception wise. I do notice it hops from 3G to hspa to hspa+ a lot so i switched to only 3g. If anyone finds anything that improves that or reception though I would be interested

I wish there was a way to extract the modem.bin file from the bell sgs2 this way we could simply distibute it around. Someone should root their phone, install cwm4 and make a backup and we could simply pass the backup around so we could all have the modem

[Q] UK GS2 - rubbish without WIFI

Hi there..
I am generally very happy with my S2, which i purchased from Phones 4 U in England, and is using Vodafone sim.
I am a noob unfortunately, but i do know what Wifi is, and i know that when i am connected to my home wireless network, i can browse online (stock or dolphin browser) use the FB app, and marketplace etc all nice and smooth.
The problem appears to be when i am not connected to a Wifi network, it is usually very very slow do display data, and more often than not, it will say "unable to connect", or "there was a problem".
Also, how important is the fact that i bought in the UK? my phone says..
GT-I9100
2.3.3
I9100xxKE7 (baseband v.)
(kernel v.) 2.6.35.7-I9100XWKF3-CL276555 [email protected] #2
Build number GINGERBREAD.XWKF3
It is a great phone apart from when i'm out and about data is rubbish! I am on a £36 a month contract.
Google maps/navigation also slow to find me. maybe cause i'm in the countryside at the start of my journey?
many thanks for any help from geniuses and sorry if this answer is well known/ already there... it's just that many questions seem to relate to korean/US/non UK versions. regards
You mentioned you are in the countryside, chances are the signal is bad it's always usually city's who have the best signal i highly doubt it's anything to do with your SGSII.
ps - i purchased my SGSII in the UK and have never had any major issues with it.
Wow, back to basics eh? Well, the speed of your mobile network depends on the coverage in your area. Generally if you're in the UK countryside, you're probably looking at GPRS, which is painfully slow.
Go to http://www.vodafone.co.uk/vodafone-uk/personal-coverage/ enter your postcode and choose "Internet and email", if it's "Slow speed", that's where your problem lies.
It's not a problem with the Samsung Galaxy S II, or with Android, it's probably a problem with your network operator.
im on the london/kent borders, can only really get 2g in my flat but outside the signal is fine. like others have said it will be because you are in a rubbish signal area, or you have put the phone into 2g only mode. Also you cant compare your wifi speed with normal signal speed. Until we start getting 4g rolled out it will always be slower
well many thanks for quick replies. The vodafone signal map thing states that i have yeah either variable or rubbish signal. I knew this would be the case around here... just well... thought my Galaxy was some kind of nex gen super phone. Just what kind of network do Voda think they're running here man?
Cheers guys

reception thread, hows yours?

personally the reception on my s3 is horrible. I live in the US and use my s3 on at&T's network. I constantly see 1 bar of service. I never noticed such problems with my s1 or s2, but don't have them any longer to really compare.. can anyone else give feedback on how the reception on their s3 is?

Which modem are you on. Please try DXLF3 if you're not on that modem yet.
Mine was really bad with Stock ROM (ALE8) and provider-pushed APN settings. Kept jumping from antenna to antenna and fell back to Edge all the time.
Removing the proxy server from the APN settings helped with the antenna jumping
Flashing eastern modems (particularly DXLF3) fixed the' falling back to edge' problem. In fact my connectivity is now as good as the S1 with it's Hong-Kong modem; Working HSPA throughout the forest (daily dog-walk) even if often one or zero bars.
The S1 had a terrible stock modem too at the beginning.

[Q] New to the note - help with T-Mobile

Hi everyone,
I'm new to the Note, but definitely not new to Android or XDA.
I've got the phone "unlocked" via the radio trick here: http://str8pt.blogspot.com/2013/06/unlock-simfree-method-for-galaxy-note.html
I've rooted it, and have tried a few different ROMs with different radios.
The Blaze radio (and others) I mention are from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1679722
I am in Melbourne, FL in case location makes any difference.
Here's what I am seeing:
CyanogenMOD 10.1.3 - using Blaze ICS radio I am getting only EDGE speeds. Using "Official TMO ICS Radio" (I'm guessing it's the one from the TMO Note?) , I get NO connectivity.
Stock 4.1.2 - using Blaze ICS radio I am getting 4G, however the signal meter is totally empty as if there's just enough signal to register connectivity but not enough to register a single bar. Download speeds are abysmal in comparison to other TMO phones I've used here - I am seeing downloads at around 1.5MB - other phones are 6, 7, even 8 MB.
My question are as follows:
Using CyanogenMod, should I be using the i717 version? Or the TMO Note version? Is there anything I can do with ANY particular radio to get better than EDGE?
Using the Stock ROM (or a variant), is there are a way to get the signal cluster to function properly? Any way to get better download speeds?
I read that the TMO 4.0.4 stock ROM image can be installed via ODIN and apparently it works correctly (if I am reading correctly) - would the TMO 4.1.2 stock ROM image be installed via ODIN and work as well? (If I can even find a full download of it?)
Should I expect to have to re-flash the radio each time with each ROM? From what I've seen, if I don't, I lose any ability to get 4G until I flash it again. I'd be stuck on EDGE.
Thanks so much guys! I've searched and read till my eyes are crossing and not finding the answers I need. I hope that with the experience that can be found in this forum maybe I can get where I need to be!
Thanks again!

I recently obtained an I717 too, unlocked it, and got it functioning with my tmobile prepaid plan. I'm still on gingerbread rom and using KID radio with decent success. just 4G , using WCDMA band 1700 (*#2263#). I get consistent decent speeds but not LTE.
The hands down best modem to use is UCMB4 - Google it. But it can cause problems with some jelly bean ROMs.
If you want jb more than anything, play with modems. If you want speed AND stability, go jellybean sandwich or black star X with the aforementioned modem.
If you want WiFi calling download skeleton key.
Ucmb4 with any of those three and the proper APN will get you LTE as fast as it's offered in your area

Hi Anthony820,
I'm currently running your Skeleton Key ROM - not bad at all! But definitely want to try to get CyanogenMod or PACman JB running.
I'll give the UCMB4 radio a shot this evening !
When I had service with TMO (via Straight Talk) I had the best luck with UVLG3.

Uvlg3, if I recall, will get you good down speed, but mediocre up. Otherwise, it's a solid choice and may be more cooperative with jb builds.

Looks like you're right - here's just 4 radios that I just tested:
UCMB4 - EDGE only
UVLG3 - 3G/DC(WTF??)/H+ 6.01Mbps up/1.07 Mbps down
UVLE1 - Phone freezes, locks on black screen, had to pull battery
ICSBLAZE - 3G/DC/H+ Network communication issues message when running speedtest.
By the way, what the heck is "DC" on the network indicator where 3G or H/H+ normally is? I've never seen that before!

I believe It stands for dual channel.
By the way, just checked and CM's WiFi tethering is working as well - nice!
Not sure what I did differently this time but this evening the signal indicator is showing real signal strength, equivalent to what I was seeing on another phone on CM.

If you're on a modem that'll work with LTE, yep. Otherwise HSPA or Edge.
Make sure, I forget and my Note no longer has service, that the top option is set under Network Type or whatever it is. Network Mode? I don't know, you'll figure it out. The thing that lets you pick between GSM, WCDMA etc..etc..

Ok, I got it figured out. I am on the FAST APN and set to WCDMA/LTE . I'm on 3G/H+ here in the house now - will see how it goes when I head out tomorrow.
Either way, I think it's time to make a backup - it's running marvelously and doing everything I would expect it to!
NOTE: Newest PAC ROM (4.3) running smoothly with UVLG3 modem on T-Mobile without issue
[EDIT]
Scratch that - it worked great until I did the first reboot - then it wouldn't boot up again, even with a battery pull.

I use UCMD3 and get LTE almost everywhere. Hellybean is a pretty good ROM, try it out!

[Q] Signal issues

I've recently moved to Hampshire, UK and got myself a Vodafone simcard. This problem probably existed already prior moving to UK but wasn't as noticeable as phone networks were a lot better in Finland and Czech Republic where I lived before. I often notice my signal being non existent or very low when other people with Vodafone but different phones have ok to good signal. I often also notice that according to the phone it has a HSDPA connection but no data is being transmitted, but immediately if it jumps to HSDPA+, data is being transmitted flawlessly again. I'm running the latest stable CM 10 on my phone. Additionally there seems to be similar issues with WIFI, other phones show good signal but mine doesn't.
Any ideas what could be the cause? Is the reception in S3 just worse than in my old Nokia E71 or Iphone5? What really puzzles me is the not working data connection with HSDPA, sometimes moving few meters might make it jump to HSDPA+ and data again transmits normally.
First go back to full stock rom, latest uk generic firmware and modem to test.
It's more likely to be due to your rom than hardware.
I've tried few different stock roms but the same problem seems to be present, still shows that I'm connected with HSDPA but no data is being transmitted. Any other ideas?
Check APN settings correct modem and CSC .
Would any of these affect the wifi aswell?

Modem, CSC and APN were all correct. My problems are with both wifi and phone network, could the problem be physical? Doesn't kernel come with the firmware, or should I try with another kernel?
You can flash a kernel or modem separately or as part of a whole firmware.
If you've tried going back to stock then hardware is the most probable cause.
