[Q] How to root & remain stock after DirtyRacun S-OFF? - Sprint HTC EVO 4G LTE

OK, after getting S-OFF through DirtyRacun for Hboot 2.09 (JB OTA) what is the easiest procedure for gaining root WITHOUT needing to flash a new ROM. I am perfectly fine staying stock otherwise.
At the moment I am S-ON, non rooted. I figure if I am going to root I may as well get S-OFF also. As I read it I need to follow the DirtyRacun S-OFF instructions first then gain root.
Sooo, since I am quite new to rooting/flashing/etc..., could someone be kind enough to let me know how to *just* gain root after I S-OFF?
Thanks!

No problem. Good luck.

Definitely read the link above thoroughly! I simply wanted to say that all you have to do is flash a Superuser zip via a custom recovery and you'll have root on your stock rom. Dirty Racun is very simple and quick to use! I have achieved s-off on 2 different Evo's now via Dirty Racun! If you do run in to any issues just hit them up on their IRC channel and they will help you out!

You might also check out my thread here. This shows the process of updating your phone if you are s-off with the OTA update sent out provided you remain stock. If you remove bloatware or change system files you might run into errors when trying to install the OTA like here.

That is not referring to the MR1 build. It says 1.0xxxx. MR1 is 1.13.605.7. That is the pre-release build that was used for downgrading in the original root process. The problem was that build had an old hboot that wouldn't interrupt the flash before the security warning happens. Which was a serious issue when we only had 2 RUUs newer than that to recover with. Anything from the release firmware (1.12.605.6) and up should be perfectly fine.

I know you can get back to s-on from Revolutionary. I was just saying as long as he didn't use Revolutionary the simple method in the thread I linked would work just fine.
Edit: I just realized you linked to the same instructions I did and you can NOT get back to s-on with that method if you used revolutionary. Revolutionary installs a hard patched hboot that prevents it from being overwritten by any hboot without issueing a specific fastboot oem command.

[q] htc dev unlocked & s-on

Dear fellow XDA members,
I am in need of some assistance. I just got my HTC EVO VIEW 4G and unfortunately, I accidentally upgraded to Android 3.2 HoneyComb without doing the Revolutionary S-OFF, so currently I did an HTC Dev unlock on my View but it still says "EXPRESS PVT SHIP S-ON RL" and it also updated the "HBOOT-1.14.0005." I tried checking out Revolutionary website and it does not support HBOOT-1.14.0005, so I was wondering what can I do? Do I need S-OFF for anything? I currently have Clockwork Mod installed on my View but it still has S-ON so I was scared about flashing ROMS. I am trying to flash Desensed 1.5 but is scared that I need S-OFF to do so... Can anyone chime in to help me please...
THANK YOU SO MUCH.
PS: BTW, I been searching and reading and rereading.... I just don't understand..
1) You'll need to downgrade to GB
2) you'll then need to run revolutionary for S-OFF
3) you can then re-upgrade to HC S-OFF

I don't think there is anything in the tool, that globatron hasn't already written a guide for on the Flyer. And none of them are hard to do. Anything particular you are trying to do?
ive done the OTA update, and then unlocked using HTC-DEV method becasue my HBOOT is 11.11.0011 and revolutionary didnt liost that hboot as being compatible. Ive been able to install a revolutionary Clockwork mod nad then went ahead and flashed LeeDriods ROM. But now it just starts up with the R2D2 sounds, boots a little and restarts.
Ive been reading and I think it either needs to flashed from fastboot or need to downgrade to GB and relevant hboot.
Also even though I have unlocked the bootlaoder from htc-dev it still says "s-on"?
I'm in the same boat. My flyer is
Hboot 1.11.001
OTA to HC
Unlocked the bootloader using HTC method
Load CW recovery.
Can I just follow the directions to down grade?
sorry to ask people for help again.. but there are alot of guides for unlocking/downgrading/flashing etc. could someone just point me in the right direction of one guide that is applicable to my particular case?
thank you.

I don't know why people keep coming on here and asking why they still have S-On after HTC Unlock. Its never been stated that HTC Unlock gets you S-Off, it just gives you an unlocked bootloader, which is not the same thing.
If you want real S-Off, downgrade and root using globatron's guide:
htthttp://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1307759p://
Then you can upgrade back to HC if you want using the following guide (also by globatron, becuase he's the man). You will also need to have the HC Hboot if you want to flash a HC custom ROM, which is also described in the following guide:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1358758
If you want to flash a custom ROM without getting S-Off, from my understanding you can do so using fastboot. But I haven't seen any step-by-step guide. You might start reading here:

It might be just me but I don't see anything in these guides with anything to downgrade the hboot on 16gb Flyer to gain compatibility with Rev. root method. It is not for me personally but seems others here are having that issue. With those newer hboot versions is there even anything that can be done at this time?
My understanding is that when unlocked with HTC dev you can flash recovery then adb push gb hboot while in recovery then run appropriate gb ruu. Once on gb rev s off then update to hc s off

How Can I Flash New Radios with S-On?

I have Hboot 1.15, Fresh EVO OS. And used the Regaw Autoroot following the OTA Update. I heard you can do this using fastboot or HTCdev, but I'm not sure how to do this... And could not find any answers (My concern is that the new FRESH updates use the new radios, and I updated to it, but can't flash the new radios)
If this has already been answered I apologize, but I couldn't find it.
Thank you for the help!
Dude there's threads all over the forum about this issue. Just spend 2minutes looking and you'll be all set
Sent from my EVO using xda app-developers app
You can't update radios if you are s-on hboot 1.15. Your only option to update the radios is to relock and take the ota or install the new ruu. Then unlock again, install twrp, and then install your favorite rom. As many will state, never take the ota because you may loose ability to get s-off in the future. This may be true, but there is no s-off solution for your hboot anyway so you might as well bite the bullet now and live in the present instead of waiting for something that may never happen in the future.
Interesting. All right Thanks for your help. And as for there being threads "all over" I was getting conflicting reports, since I saw on one page where it was possible to flash using HTCdev with S-on, but there was no link or instructions given.
To address ur main concern, there is no need to update your radios. If you want to run a rom that is based off the latest update all u need to do is make sure your kernel matches the kernel in the rom. You can update your kernel with Flash img GUI, found in the app store. Just download the rom u want open flash img GUI select the rom and choose to flash kernel img. Once complete, wipe and flash rom. Njoy!

I am S-ON HBoot 1.15. Is it possible to flash HTC Stock recovery, go to stock rooted rom, use OTA root Keeper and take the new OTA?
You don't need OTA root keeper because your going to have to do HTC dev to unlock the device again.
With that being said I wouldnt recommend taking the OTA or running the ruu to update because you'll be on the new hboot
Sent from my EVO using Tapatalk 2
Not to mention the new base for stock has introduced a few of its own issues that the new firmware/hboot can not fix. Several people have attempted to downgrade thinking its the best alternative and brick their phones in doing so. The new firmware doesn't change much anyway

[Q] jelly bean/root question

Hi guys
I am unrooted and I want to root s-off before I do the jb ota update. Let me know if I am in the right direction, in order to do this, I need to unlock/root s-off with dirty racun as my h-boot is 1.19. (dont necessarily want to flash a rom just yet). then I relock (still being s-off) do the ota, and then unlock again, and root? This is just what I have learned from reading info in the forums. thanks

Do not do it this way. You do not want the 2.09 h boot whether your are soff our not. Once you obtain soff ONLY FLASH RADIO FIRMWARE. I believe it's the first zip in captain throwback thread for the new firmware. Read before you do anything. There it's no need to ever change h boot. 2.09 gives problems even if u are soff.

thanks everyone, my other evo was perfectly rooted but the touchscreen stopped working, so when I got this replacement one, the root method was different. Ive been reading up for about a month, so I tried to condense my question as much as possible. thanks for the help

Still a bit confused with the new OTA and what I should do.

I'm just learning that there is a new OTA. Whatever the case, I have not received it yet but am curious as to how I should handle it. This phone still confuses me a bit when it comes to unlocking etc.
Currently I am S-On, Rooted and running Shrike's PAC-Man rom. I kinda been lazy about staying up to date with everything and just got in my routine of flashing new releases.
Now i'm reading about this update and new hboot versions and wondering what I should be doing now. Should I accept the update in my current status or should I be doing something else to update? What about my hboot version, i'm still at 2.25. Should I be updating that myself or just take the OTA to handle it. My apologies if this is a redundant question.

First, the updated wont be pushed to you because you aren't on a sense rom, and i think the AOSP has the OTAkill.apk but i would need to look for it.
Second, the update is a good thing. not only does it have a new hboot but it has new radios, firmware and other goodies for the phone.
if you were to do the update, i wouldnt wait for VZW to push it. there is a zip that is in the development forum that you may flash to get the benefits of the update.
if you go down this route it will make the phone 100% stock. You would have to do the dev unlock with token and flash a recovery to get back to root status.
if you were to do this you also need to back up internal sd card just in case.
EDIT: Here are the steps you would take if you wanted to update the phone.

You can be S-OFF and still get the OTA, you just have to be pure stock, or you can flash the files in the thread which Flyhalf posted below.
On my last Rezound, I flashed the updated hboot and radios while already S-OFF, rooted and running Nils' ROM. On my current ROM, I got the OTA downloaded while still pure stock, then unlocked bootloader, flashed Amon Ra, rooted, then got S-OFF. Obviously, if there are any subsequent OTA's, I'll have to wait for a flashable.

No zip file of any kind will get you back to s-on. you must use fastboot to write to the secure flag. FYI
