I have to mail in my phone for some service and I am 99% sure they are going to give me a replacement phone instead of fixing the phone I'm going to ship them and getting it back.
I would very much so like to keep all my settings and apps and stuff cause even with titanium backup it's a good hour or two before I get the phone back the way I like it.
So what I was thinking of doing is:
Backup in its current state
Save on computer
Ship phone
Get new phone
Flash rom/kernel
Transfer nandroid to phone
Recover
Does this work or am I going to run into some trouble?
Yes. You shouldn't have any problems restoring a Nandroid to a new phone.
The only trouble you may run into is if you're trying to restore a backup you made with a version of CWM from say, 6 mths to a year or more ago with a current version of CWM. In other words, as long as the backup is recent and you use a recent/the same version of CWM to do the restore, you should be fine.
Hello guys. I am currently using Slimbean RC1 and I made a backup of my rooted stock 4.0.4 with Siyah kernel so that when I restore my backup anytime in future then will not have any super brick risks. But I have a confusion. Do I need to do a full wipe in CWM before restoring backup? Or it will wipe automatically?

No wipe necessary. As long as the CWM version you're using to restore the backup isn't a lot newer (says 12 mths or more) than the version of CWM you made the backup with, you shouldn't have any problems at all.

Hi All,
I've been researching this all morning and I'm not coming up very optimistic.
I've decided to go ahead and start getting messy with my Rezound. My first step is to unlock the bootloader etc etc etc. The problem is, from my understanding, your phone gets wiped when the bootloader is unlocked.
The problem is that I've been playing Where's My Water? lately and I'd really like to avoid losing my progress. Is there a way for me to temp root or start this process without losing my data?
Not really. Unless you already have root, you can't use something like Titanium Backup to backup the app data. There are other backup programs, but they normally only backup the apps, not the data.
If you are on the current OTA, there is no longer a temp root solution.

Unfortunately, that's what I'm finding .
I actually didn't install Angry Birds for this exact reason, but when this game was $.25, I figured "What the hell?" Then I couldn't stop playing it :-(.
Is there anyway to make an Nandroid backup without Root? I found an App that will extract data from there (AppExtractor). I'm thinking once I have Root, I should be able to extract from a backup.
Same answer... without root, no.
You could try MyBackup Pro which does not require root. I think that is what I used when I first unlocked and rooted.
You don't have to wipe to unlock. You should be able to unlock. Install recovery app. Do a nandroid backup. Install base rooted rom overtop stock. Then titanium backup. Worked on my old base. Not positive on new ICS leak though.
You may get some force closes before you do a full wipe.

Thanks, but I already wiped :-(.
Got Scott's CleanROM now. Unlocking the Bootloader wipes the phone according to HTC, and it even warned me I'd lose everything.
I really hope this device gets some CM9 love because Sense is just ridiculously over-bloated.
Also, for anyone who hasn't put the leak on yet, ICS has been butchered. HTC replaced the People App with the same contacts you have in GB. At least Apex Launcher is sweet.

I am in the same situation, with a stock Rezound with some data I'd like to keep. Could this be clarified? I thought I could do a 'temp-root', but it seems that this was just for an old version of the stock ROM. I have software version 2.01.605.11
How do I "install recovery app" without first rooting, and therefore having to wipe my phone (for whatever reason)?
Hello, I need some help with restoring via CWM on the Galaxy S3.
On the S2 I pretty much always used CM9 and jumped back and forth between versions and backing up/ restoring was never an issue.
Now however I am using the stock ROM and its rooted of course.
I made a back up of my stock rom 'cause I wanted to try and install some stuff.
I tried installing the jelly bean transition effects but the install failed, the device felt kinda sluggish (maybe my imagination) afterwards so I decided to restore my phone. The restoring went good but the last ting that happens is that CWM says that restoring /Data failed.
I reboot my phone and I come to the first start up screen where I get to choose language and so on. Everything but photos has been deleted. I try to install CM9, and I do that without any issues. Then I trie to backup my stock backup but I get the same error message and I get back to stock setup page.
My backup is a staggering 6GB, and I read somewhere that CWM can only restore 2GB?
I've deleted that backup and done another one but that is also 6GB.
Does anyone know how to restore from that first restore or how to make future restores work?

I had this problem with my sisters Xperia X8,couldn't restore anything that i backed up.It goes for a while and stops. But she had bootloader locked.I was shore that i unlocked her bootloader but i didn't,so i unlocked bootloader, and tried to backup and restore and it worked fine.
I'm not 100% and i don't know is that the way CWM works, but i think in order to restore your data, that you backed up,you have to unlock your bootloader. But it's the best to wait someone who knows this for 100% sure.
If you haven't unlocked bootloader try that,or you don't won't to lose your warranty!?
Good luck!
I don't think that CWM has size limitation but i can be wrong.
Have you made sure that your CWM is up-to-date? if in doubt flash the latest CF-root.
was there ever a resolution to this problem? I did the same thing, rooted the galaxy s 3 and unlock the bootloader. Get a backup of my stock set up using clockwork recovery mod. Now when I try to restore, it does not restore the data. All of my apps look like they are there, but none of them are really installed. I think I can just reinstall all of the apps by hand, I would like to know how to get over this.
Is this possible? The full details are I had my phone stolen, and got a new one with android 4.0.4 on it. I have on my computer a copy of my latest backup of my old cognition gingerbread rom. Can I just use CWM to recover to my old rom, or do i need to first downgrade to a gingerbread rom, and then recover?
Thankyou very much for assistance
Edit: Also, I don't actually want to use the old rom, I just need the contacts it saved, afterwards I'll wipe everything and install a clean ICS mod. In case there's any way of doing this without having to revert
You'll probably need to restore the backup with a version of CWM close to the one the backup was made with, you can often have problems restoring if you're using a CWM version a lot (say 12 mths or more) newer than the one you made the backup with.
So I'd probably go GB/with a rooted GB kernel first, restore the backup & go from there. I mean, it could work first try with an ICS kernel that's running a recent CWM build, but there's a fair chance it won't.
Edit - And be really careful with stock 4.0.4, don't do a wipe while you're running that.
Wow. I just... wow.
Ok, so I did the stupid thing and just tried to restore my old backup without doing proper downgrading first and it ended up soft bricking my machine, couldn't get recovery mode up, but I got into download mode. So I downloaded my country's stock gingerbread rom from samsung's site and flashed it with odin just to see what happens, and somehow my old rom was working again, and I have all my contacts and data. saved everything up to google, upgraded to ICS, import.
Everything went better than expected.
Thanks for the help
Told you Important thing is you managed to fix it yourself without asking silly questions in Q&A. Not many people seem to be able to do that these days.
Well done. I'm glad you got it sorted
Edit -You're welcome
is it possible to backup my current ROM and restore it to another phone? of the same make and model? current phone 4.2.2 sentinel ROM (AOSP/AOKP) other phone 4.0.4 (Cyanogenmod)
my worries are would it:
1. overwrite the EFS?
2. Would the ROM fall to work or boot as two different phones have two different hardware
if somebody had tested this let me know.
also is there a way to mount a ROM/run/test it on the pc like some sort of emulator??

Yes. You can restore a nandroid backup from one SGS2 to another. Make sure you use the same version of CWM to do the restore tho.
No, it can't overwrite the EFS/IMEI, which is a unique identifier for the device & 'baked' into the hardware (tho you can trash it with firmware gone bad). No, why would the rom fail to boot if it's the same model phone ? Many people here have restored a nandroid made with one S2 to another.
'Test' a rom on a PC ? Unlikely. Some developers use specially designed boards with the right hardware mounted onto the board, completely separate from a PC. You're overthinking this a little methinks.
As long as you restore the backup with the same version of CWM, you should be fine, so when you get the other phone, install the same rom/kernel you're currently running on this phone, restore the backup (backup your external SD separately), done.
Edit - This all assumes you're getting another I9100 (assuming you have one now), do not try to restore the backup to another SGS2 variant.
great !! thanks.... for the detailed info. I will try.
also with regards to the CWM recovery does it have to be the EXACT EXACT version?? like can't I restore a ROM which was backed up with CWM recovery 6 and restore it with CWM recovery version 5? our vice versa? both phones are on AOSP/AOKP ROMs so maybe their recoveries could be some what compatible??or ?? unlike if one was running on a Samsung base ROM and another on AOSP/AOKP?

There's a fair chance you'll have problems if you use a different version of CWM (especially if there's a big difference in versions), but it might work restoring a backup made with V6 to a phone with V5. Tho if it were me, I'd get it done right the first time/without headaches by using the exact same version.
cool I will do that.... thanks

sup guys, my question is, how you guys doing a full backup on NONROOT samsung galaxy s2 ?
i tried Helium, but it just backups your apps, no more ...
wanna root my s2 now and want a Full backup ( Files, settings, apps, contacts etc. )
found nothing on google and xda either, if there is a thread, my bad, tell just.
Root your phone first, then make a nandroid backup in CWM immediately after/before you do anything else to the phone (also backup your EFS as well). This will give you a backup of your stock setup/rooted which you can go back to if you need to; to unroot all you need to do is flash a stock kernel. Any methods while the phone is unrooted just involve a whole lot of stuffing around & aren't as thorough/easy as a nandroid IMHO
There is also the possibility to flash CWM temporarily and boot into it. This keeps your phone as original as it is and from there you can do a nandroid backup. After that you can root your device and in case something goes wrong you always can return back.
Have a look at Philz-Kernel thread, there you can find either a Kernel with built in root and CWM recovery but also the link to the temporary recovery (if I remember well).
