Help... I have rooted my droid x2 in the past a couple of times, but this Rezound is something different and for some reason I just cannot get it. I really need some assistance. I have been reading all over androidcentral and xda-developers all day and night but It's just overwhelming or something has to go wrong. I tried Hasoon's kit, my device wasn't recognized... then I tried HTCdev website... that was successful, but then I locked it after unlocking it, and I figured out that I probably need it unlocked so I can flash a rom... It would just be easier if someone could chat with me on Skype or something and I'd really appreciate if someone could get me going again and maybe chat with me and give me step by step help. My username is mikeonabike11.
Thanks again,
Confused.

1) Grab the PH98IMG.zip from the Amon-Ra thread
2) Stick it on the root of your sdcard
3) Reboot into bootloader
4) Press power - the bootloader will scan for an update package, you should then be prompted to hit volume up to install it. If nothing is found, you didn't place the PH98IMG.zip in the right place.
5) Hit volume up to install
6) Reboot when asked
7) Remove the PH98IMG.zip asap.
You can now reboot back into the bootloader then pick recovery from the menu to get into Amon-Ra. Make sure you back up your existing rom before wiping and installing a new one.
One thing you need to know is that a PH98IMG file can be many things. It is only the name of a file that your phone looks for to use when booted into hboot. So it can be a kernel, an entire RUU (OS), a custom recovery or ROM... basically anything. It just means that item was packed into a PH98IMG file in order to run automatically off your SD card when the phone boots. So you need to know what the PH98IMG file is that you are using or you might flash something you don't want that can possibly cause your phone to not work properly.
You'd be doing yourself a favor by learning to use fastboot for things first so you understand the process more before using the "automated" way of doing everything using a PH98IMG file.
Also, as soon as you have Amon Ra installed and have rooted the phone, make a nandroid of your phone at stock and save that in case you need it if something goes wrong flashing the ROM, as mjones mentioned above. It's much easier to restore the nandroid than getting the RUU to get back to stock.
Another thing to think about is whether or not you want to go s-off or not. It unlocks the security of the phone making it both easier to flash ROMs by letting the kernel flash immediately afterwards by itself and also easier to brick the phone by doing something by mistake. You don't have to s-off, you'll just have to manually flash the kernel after flashing a ROM if you don't. If you don't flash ROMs often you might want to read up about it more before you s-off. I rarely change ROMs and I'm still s-on and it doesn't affect me negatively at all.
Also, there's a "Help" thread in the General section, I think it's a sticky, and some guys have posted their gtalks so that people can hit them up for help. Maybe one of those guys can walk you through it. I would be willing to do it but I'm not as experienced as they are and haven't rooted/flashed anything for a year now.
cslingerland is helping me with mine thanks for the help!

1. Not sure whether you need to relock the bootloader or not.
2. Run the RUU
3. If you locked the bootloader, re-unlock it, flash Amon RA
4. Amon Ra has a menu option to re-root the phone.

Definately need to relock to run the RUU, and I think you need to be on stock recovery for it to work as well. There is a thread that explains how to get back to rooted stock search the development thread or this one. It was popular when the OTA came up . Sorry I have no idea how to post links or I would.
ok thanks. If someone could post a link, it would be very helpful.....thanks guys
First of all, you really should use the search function. This has been gone over in many, many threads already. From what people have posted in response to you you really could have searched RUU and found an answer I'm sure. You could also search "ICS Stock" and come up with a thread. I say all this because people keep posting new threads without doing research and it is cluttering up the board and is getting frustrating. Also, you learn a lot more about this stuff if you read up about it.
That being said... follow the link and info in this post:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=22660531&postcount=12
You also need to have HTC Sync installed on your computer and put the phone in fastboot. You don't need to flash stock recovery first. Also, when you relock your phone will say SECURITY WARNING in pink where it says RELOCKED. You can ignore that. Make sure you back up anything and everything you want to save as this will really wipe your phone for reals.
If you get any mainver errors search for the Awesome Recovery Tool in the dev section which should help you automate any mainver work arounds you may need.

Sorry. Geesh I did search but I guess I wasn't using the correct words to get the help I was looking for. That's why I posted the thread. I was going to sell the phone that's why I was putting it back stock the root is fine. But that looks pretty complicated so maybe I can sell it the way it is.

Well, as I mentioned above, it's getting frustrating with all the threads asking the same thing.
Anyway, it's actually really easy. I did it over the weekend because I wanted to start with a clean slate. Just download the RUU, make sure you have HTC Sync installed but not running, put phone in fastboot, relock phone, double click on RUU. It will do it's thing and then you're done. It takes about 15 minutes or so for the RUU to run.
Otoh, someone might like the fact that there's ICS on it so you may get some nice bids on it if you put it up on eBay.

Except that's the outdated RUU. Use the one in my linked post above.
If I am running cleanrom GBE, will these steps take me back to stock as well?
What I am supposed to do:
Download latest RUU
Flash stock recovery (put on root of sd card, and flash in recovery)
relock in fastboot (is that thru adb?) (fastboot oem lock)
run RUU (this is where I am confused, how do I run it? Like flash it?
then I should be bone stock?
If I wanted to root, I would flash amon ra
Install SU to root.
Miss anything?
Sorry, its a little different than modding samsung devices.
Thanks for you help and pateince
Heather
Yes, but you actually don't need to flash stock recovery first. To run the RUU just double click on the RUU file. It will open up a window and there is a ReadMe (or something similar) button. Click that and read it for more info on what to expect when running it.
Before you run it make sure you have HTC Sync on your pc. It shouldn't be running, just needs to be there.
Also, follow the linked post in my post above for latest version that has a working download link if you don't already have it.
And make sure you have backed up anything and everything you need because this really will wipe your internal sd card. I would back up your external sd card too for good measure. Can't be too safe.
I'm a noob in terms of the HTC rooting process.. Very familiar with the Moto Droid series, so different terms, I guess. Can you explain why the HTC Sync has to be installed, but not running? I've already unlocked my Rezound, after the OTA, and am running CleanROM 3.1. I actually had HTC Sync installed at first, but instead of disabling it, I uninstalled it. It worked like a charm with HTC Sync uninstalled. Maybe I'm an idiot and it's a whole different issue. Like I said, I'm a noob. Just wanted to see why it worked that way from someone who seemed like they would know.
It's to get the HTC drivers for the phone onto you computer.

Hi! Running into some trouble. I would have posted this in the development area but I am not allowed to until I have 10 posts. I went through the process of unlocking then rooting using amon ra, but thats the last thing I did right. I was in recovery and made the mistake of thinking I could restore an old nandriod, which happened to be from my bionic. Well now I am stuck at the HTC white screen and cannot get anywhere. I downloaded the all on one kit and successfully booted into recovery using it, but even after doing a full wipe I cannot get anywhere. I am new to HTC and with a moto device I would have just sbf'd back but I dont know what to do at this point. Any and all help would be appreciated, thanks!
What did you try to restore and dis you install re install the kernel for it
sent from ics land
I tried to restore a nandroid backup which is what I am guess caused the issue. I am new to HTC and its process, so I am unaware what you are asking by kernal. I unlocked the phone and installed amon ra 3.14 and that was it. Once it was installed I went into recovery and tried the backup, which I am now regretting. Sorry, completely new to this process, thank you very much for your patients
Just download a new ROM in the development thread.
Okay, thought that may fix so I have been downloading one, just hasnt finished yet. Once completed, do I just move it to my SD card, pop it into my phone, boot into recovery and load the zip? Never done it before, just want to fact check.
Is it an ICS or GB ROM?
It is one of the ICS roms....sigh, lol, guess that complicates things. Well, since I have already gone this far, should I go ahead and just relock, load new leaked RUU then unlock and load ICS rom OR forget that, download a GB rom and just flash it?
No you're good with downloading an ICS ROM. Did you also download the PH98IMG that goes with it?
I downloaded earlier when trying to root with Amon Ra and and got a message that it was out of date, so I thought it PH98IMG was Amon Ra from what I read in the forums and downloaded the new 3.14 and loaded that. Was I mistaken? If so, what is PH98IMG? There is a wealth of knowledge on this site, just really hard to piece it all together, lol, thank you again for your patience.
I was confused at first on what it was, too. I may not be 100% on this but it's essentially the kernel for the ROM. Since we don't have s-off we have to manually flash kernels in HBOOT instead of just flashing them in recovery.
What you wanna do is rename whatever the kernel is to just PH98IMG(it usually has it already in the name). Delete whatever comes after it. So it will say PH98IMG.zip afterwards. Then what you'll wanna do is put it in the root of your sd card. That means don't place it in any folder.
Flash the ROM first in recovery then go into HBOOT and it will read the PH98IMG.zip and prompt whether you want to update or not. Hit volume UP to update and then reboot and you should be good.
Also, make sure you delete the PH98IMG.zip from your SD card before going back into HBOOT again because it will keep asking you if you want to update it. This will prevent you from getting into Recovery from the Bootloader and if you ever get stuck in a bootloop, like you just did. The only way to get back into recovery would be to remove SD card and connect it to another phone or Computer and delete it that way.
Woah, excellent, just want I needed, some simple breakdown of everything. Once last favor, I searched for the PH98IMG(cant remember where i got it earlier) and there are alot of items named the same thing. Can you point me in the right direction of the one I need?
Which ROM are you trying to flash?
CleanRom 4.0
Well, actually you will need to relock and download the RUU if you want to use that ROM.
ok, downloading the RUU now and have the Rom downloading as well, once they are finished I would relock, load the RUU, unlock then load the new Rom right?
Yes that is it. While running the RUU follow the directions from Scott to the T. He has them posted in the first post, or at least a link to his directions.
Well the title speaks for itself, this is my first thread on these forums, hope its in the rights section.
So, like the title asks...
How many people on hboot 1.5 have sucessfully done the Juopunutbear S-OFF mod? If you have is it worth it and do you think its really hard to do?
I only ask because the directions seem short, simple, and to the point.
Am I okay starting out with MeanROMICS 1.4?
How do I know what file download is appropriate for me (the thread in this section states .05 is good but the instructions on juopunutbears site say .01)?
And lastly on the unlimited.io page under the hboot downloads section, do i need any of these files and how do i distinguish the difference?
me
i did. heeeelllllaaaaaaa easy. even better is i recovered fully from VM firmware. now im rocking hboot eng 1.4.200. only thing with jupwhateverabear is the instructions dont prepare you for it asking if you want custom jphboot. i said no. ended up saying soff locked 1.5, then i used the jphboot and it said jupowhateverabear but didnt say whether it was locked or unlocked or relocked. now with hbooteng the line where all that crap would be isnt even there.

great but why would i want the VM firmware? isnt the whole point of the juopunutbear thing to keep hboot 1.5 but with s-off?
I did it and it works. I extracted the files needed for the process, put it on my desktop, and followed the directions. I also watched a YouTube video on how they did the same steps on a HTC Amaze, so it was simple. I used a coaxial cable to do the process, shaped it as a "U" shape, then performed the steps. Did not brick my phone and only did it in one try.
right so what do i do with the extracted files besides the .exe?
theres the .img, .zip, and two .txt
typically you use the .img with fastboot and the .zip in recovery for a flash install but i dont see those steps in the instructions at all.

The way I did was to create a folder on the desktop. Then put all of the files inside the folder. I opened the exe and made sure my phone was on fastboot usb. Then wait until it tells you to do the wire trick. The wire trick is all about timing. If it fails the first time, just run the program again. That's how I did it.
so you did nothing with the other four files? ran the exe and it took care of the rest?

Yes. I also used a spare SD card I had laying around that got corrupted but I did not want to use my 16 GB card, so I swapped SD cards. You can later format it if you like. Just follow the instructions on the website and you should be fine.
i could just backup my SD card and use the one i have? or will it ruin it? or could i just use NO SD card?

You can also backup your SD card so you won't lose anything important. I was skeptic at first, but I was getting tired of flashing roms through fastboot. So I saw the opportunity and went for it. Honestly, I recommend using a spare SD card (does not matter the size) because it will create a backup in the SD card.
I did it with SOS Rom. Issues afterwards, can't download anything over 1g to my sd card through USB and can't load custom kernels or kernels found in roms though fastboot or other recoveries or flash image GUI. I am s off now. Could be because I used a non gb Rom or stock one. I take the blame, just learn from my stupidity. Going to try to unroot and try again tomorrow

That's weird. I was on SOS rom before I did the steps. Once I was done, I flashed the SOS rom again with no issues. The only difference I've made was to use fastboot to get to the revolutionary recovery to reflash the SOS rom again.
I did it, process was simple, I chose to install the optional hboot

Not the right section to put this.
I successfully got S-OFF from a stock rom after a couple tries i admit. And yes, the instructions are a bot short. I even searched for this "instructional video" that it mentions. The only video was for the Amaze, i believe. But, still the same method of execution. And first, you must make a backup of your SD Card if you want anything on it. Just backup the whole thing. I did notice that the Juopunutbear method did something to me SD card, it was salvageable after a format tho.
Gotta mention, the first time I tried this (unsuccessfully), when I booted up because I had given up, I noticed that I got caught in a boot loop. Every time ending up at the juopunutbear screen. Then I got scared, only to madly search how to get OUT of a boot loop, of which I thought I bricked it. And let me tell you it is possible to get out of it. I'll try and get the site I found up.
After I finally got back to stock I successfully tried the Juopunutbear method, along with the wire-trick and finally got it up. I tried to mimic the video to get the right number of taps and length of time that you need to make contact with the ground. It finally worked and it's freakin awesome. Been waiting a long time for someone to find out this hboot 1.5 problem.
This is not the proper place to put this better to put this in the already started thread for Juopunutbear or possibly even General or something. There is no development being made in this thread.
Overall I find the wire trick less invasive and less of a hassle then the whole downgrade, brick, update, process. No offence to the guys that designed the process. Because I'm sure it took more than their brains to do but personally, I like the combination of hardware / software hacking.
+1 for the wire trick S-OFF trick

Everyone else seems to do this with no problems, but this is my first root. Well im following this particular guide: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1813818 and have done everything up to completing the wire trick. When I run ControlBear.exe the phone boots up then the cmd window says "second backup failed immediately" and no options ever pop up on the screen on my phone. Can anyone propose a solution? Since this is my first time rooting, it could be a stupid noob mistake but for the life of me its killing me to be so close yet so far to soff.
Long story short. Flashed a ROM in EXT4. Something went wrong and I screwed up my partitions. Cant get anything to load. Was directed to flash the RUU in fastboot.
Problem is, I cant figure out how and YES, I looked at the guide. I"m either a dumbass or really cant read. Where do I put the RUU zip? One I get into bootloader how do I run fastboot in usb mode and have it find the RUU zip....
What shall I name the RUU.
Any responses would be most helpful. I need the phone for work tomorrow
Rename RUU to PH85IMG and put it on the root of external sd card (not in any folders). Pull battery, replace, and hold volume down while powering on device. When it asks of you want to update select yes, then let it sit for awhile. It will reboot a couple of times while it does it's thing. When it's done reboot phone and you should be all good

Edit: Do I have to re-add 4EXT etc to flash ROMS or should it still be there?
If you did read then you would have figured everything out for yourself. People claim they read but comprehension is a big factor as well.
To answer your question... Flashing an RUU is like turning the phone back to stock. Depending if you're s-off then you will need to unlock and reflash a recovery.

All information is definitely in the bible, maybe it can be cleared up a bit, but in your case, if you control+f(for find) and typed RUU, the 5th of 6 times it appears in the document would have shown you the answer.
You could look at threads by our mod, he has posted that this is NOT a place just for people to find answers.. and I don't really mind helping people find answers.. but it IS clearly explained in the bible.
This is just to squash any debate over people's reading ability- the answers are ALWAYS there, and I and a few others did our best to reduce how much time is spent searching.. if you want to contribute to the bible, you can always do so in that thread.
I went ahead and changed the link in section 2 to read "12. How to flash firmware/custom bootloaders - this is how you flash a RUU" just to make it easier to find.

Now for the fun part. You're positive you're on HBoot 1.58, and you're getting bootloops when you flash roms. The fix is actually quite simple.
First, go to this thread by mpgrimm2
Scroll down until you see a post on the thread by ramjet73. This post contains a list of HBoot downloads. These are all free.
First, find the one that says "PG86IMG_JBear_1.58.5858_hboot_Sprint_ICS.zip". Download that to use as a backup.
Now, we're gonna go by exactly what I did. But I recommend you do your own research on which Hboot is the best for whatever ROM you're trying to flash.
First off, all of these are already S-OFF, so you wont need to redo the wire trick.
Anyway, I downloaded the first one on the list, "PG86IMG_1.40-hboot.zip".
Now, to install this, you're pretty much gonna trick your phone into "updating" to it.
To do this, just download the HBoot you've chosen to be the best for you (in my case it was the first one on the list, 1.4).
Now just rename that file to "PG86IMG" without quotation marks.
Next, copy it to the root of your SD card.
The rest takes place on your phone. Power off your phone, and boot into the bootloader (Hold volume down + power button).
If you've done the previous steps correctly, your bootloader should detect the HBoot you downloaded, and ask if you want to update.
Volume up= Yes
Volume down = No
If you're positive about this, then choose "Yes".
It should update and tell you to reboot.
This is where I ran into a problem. I was still running stock ICS from the OTA update, and I got stuck in a bootloop. My phone would freeze at the the Sprint animation, turn off, and repeat. I thought I could just disregard it, boot into recovery, and flash my new ROM. But every time I booted into the bootloader all I could do was either update or reboot. This is where that micro SD card reader comes in. Just pop your SD card into your computer, and remove the HBoot you downloaded. Then put your SD card back in your phone and try rebooting into the bootloader again.
If it boots into your bootloader as normal, then that should be it. You should be on whatever HBoot version you chose to download (this worked for me with 1.4)
Now try flashing that ROM again and let me know how it goes.
Keep in mind, different ROMS may have different results. You may still need to flash certain kernals or wipe specific partitions as instructed by the developer of the ROM you want to flash.
Feedback is appreciated.
I prefer to put the PG86IMG file on my sd card while booted up normally. Then reboot straight into recovery bypassing the hboot screen. Wipe, flash rom then boot into bootloader and run the update. This prevents getting bootloops and keeps you from having to use the computer to rename or remove the file. Saves you some work!

If you are S-OFF you can also flash a different bootloader from fastboot on a PC avoiding the need to deal with the PG86IMG.zip file at all, then boot directly into recovery from the new bootloader. See my post here for alternative methods to flash a new bootloader when S-OFF, including multiple ways to delete the the PG86IMG.zip file when flashing one from the current bootloader.

Theres also
fastboot oem rebootRUU
fastboot flash zip PG86IMG.zip
fastboot reboot-bootloader

enter recovery & clear cache then reboot.
I believe this is the fastest way to flash a different hboot

If you look at the guide I linked in my previous post which has similar instructions that I took from the unlimited.io website and tested, you can do this fastboot sequence to clear cache, flash a different bootloader, then reboot back to your current ROM:
fastboot erase cache
fastboot oem rebootRUU
fastboot flash zip new_hboot.zip
fastboot reboot

The hboot filename can be anything you want, and doesn't necessarily have to be "PG86IMG.zip" using this method.
If you need to flash another ROM before the reboot or do something else in recovery, you can issue the "fastboot boot recovery.img" command instead of "fastboot reboot" to go directly to your custom recovery since there is no "fastboot reboot-recovery" command.

I know.. & because this thread is about bootloaders I thought that's how I would explain myself. Instead of going into more detail & say how you can flash .img files through that process....

That's fine.
For clarification, the command I suggested to get back to recovery (fastboot boot recovery.img) is not flashing it, only booting it directly to avoid having to go to the bootloader first to get to recovery.

Guys, I made this guide because it seemed like the most basic and simple way to do it. I speak from experience when I say that the command prompt can be a little intimidating. It can be get pretty nerve wrecking when you dont have a back up phone and you feel like you have lots of room for error and you're terrified you might brick your device. This guide doesn't use any sort of external commands, making it seem a lot less manual. I wasn't trying to show people the fastest way. Just the easiest, less nerve wrecking way.

The guide I linked in post #3 of this thread provides alternatives for flashing a different bootloader and for deleting the PG86IMG.zip file if you choose that method. Some people are very comfortable with the fastboot commands and that method saves having to worry about deleting the PG86IMG.zip. It's always good to have alternatives because one size never fits all.
You asked for feedback in the OP and we're providing that.

Feedback - Information about reactions to a product, a person's performance of a task, etc., used as a basis for improvement.
You were promoting your own threads, not giving feedback. I have to thank you for the post that helped in making this guide, but your alternate methods aren't really necessary. I'm not sure how to say that without sounding rude or hostile, but Im sure you get my point.

OK, and if you want to be blunt my point was that your guide wasn't really necessary, and I think that's feedback on your "product", since the content was already covered in the guide I setup for people that want to change bootloaders when S-OFF, but if people prefer to use your version in the OP of this thread that's fine with me.
As I already stated, alternatives are good.

Dear sir
i have the same problem my phone get stuck on white htc screen
unrooted
s-on
relocked
hboot 1.5.0007
so can any one help me how to solve this problem
thanks
i also tried factory reset and to setup ICS ruu but it got stop when it try to reboot boat-loader and still the same problem
when trying to flash any thing recovery or boot failed and trying to put rom as pg86img also failed any one help me please this phone part of my daily life:crying::crying::crying:
The problem with s-on is that the kernel does not flash when you flash a rom. That is why it won't boot.
To fix the issue after flashing a rom, you need to pull the boot.img from the rom.zip and use fastboot to flash it.
fastboot flash boot boot.img
There are two options when you are s-on and flashing roms to flash the kernel with the rom and avoid bootloop.
The no pc method:
The easiest method is to use 4ext recovery with smart flash enabled. That will allow you to flash roms and kernel and avoid bootloop.
The PC method:
Keep a recovery.img in your fastboot directory. When you want to flash a rom, boot your recovery into the phones memory which allows you to flash the kernel with the rom.
You use: fastboot boot recovery.img
Then just install the rom once booted into recovery. While it seems the same, Booting into recovery using fastboot is different and will allow the kernel to flash.
