It means Verizon made a patch so you can't use the unlock bootloader method from the last software version.
I wonder if this was to patch that exploit for the exynos processor reported a few weeks back. The side effect of course is a relocked bootloader. That's why I didn't understand why everyone was bringing so much attention to it. Let's pray that Adam can unlock this new bootloader.
The OTA is a side effect of a relocked bootloader, not the fix itself. The original exploit didn't use the Exynos exploit, so I doubt it matters, UNLESS the new bootloader in the OTA has closed the original unlock method.
The exploit needed to be patched. Wayyy too easy for malware to exploit it and screw you.

What if we use insurance to replace our phones and we get one with this locked bootloader? Or what about people buying new phones? My wife's iPhone 4 was actually more valuable with iOS 5 than iOS 6. The iSheep still do not have a jailbreak for iOS 6.

Thanks for this information. I already learned the hard way on my Transformer Infinity to never update before unlocking. This will give me a reason to unlock my Note 2, root it, and install CleanROM, which is also what I have on my Infinity.

Reverting back to stock is so easy....all you need to do is odin flashing stock tar file....which will relock and unroot your phone with working OTA update. And I was referred to current rooted rom users. I don't think they need to be re-unlocked nor re-rooted. Flashing another updated rom and kernel will pretty much take care of everything. Besides, adrenalyne already has bootloader safe OTA update working......so there is no point of worrying. However, if someone is planning to buy a new phone and needs his or her phone updated, then yes.
just unlock it. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=36895425#post36895425

Fixes the exynos exploit, locks the bootloader, and updates the radio. Possibly some other minor patches looking at the patch file sizes.
Stay away from the ota unless you use the safe one I created in another thread. Ignore AdamOutler's comment in this thread as it turned out to be wrong and people got locked up in the process.

Depends on the kernel. I couldn't tell you with third party kernels, but the latest stock one from the ota closes the exploit and is safe to flash.

Just a question will I need to be unrooted to receive and or download/ install the ICS upgrade when it is made available?
Sent from my rooted HTC_Amaze_4G using Tapatalk
From what I recall, you need to relock the bootloader to install OTA updates... So, I would assume you would need at least to relock the bootloader if they do not give us a zip to upgrade to ICS... And even then, to update from zip, you have to relock the bootloader, it will also delete your superuser on the rom, so you will lose root. It will probably also overwrite your recovery at the same time, so in the end, it's best to relock the bootloader before you upgrade to OTA to prevent it from bricking your phone.
With the last update we did not have to relock our bootloader however we did need the stock recovery. We've only had one OTA update since we've obtained root so it's difficult to say what a totally new build will require.
In most cases with various different phones, you can download the OTA to the phone but it will not install if the /system partition has been modified and you have a custom recovery installed. In order to properly update with an OTA, the ROM would need to be returned to stock and you would need to flash the stock recovery back to the phone as the OTA does checks against the system to ensure it's okay to flash. You do not have to be relocked in order to install it, however.
The best idea would be to wait until the OTA has been modified to ignore /system modifications and can be flashed using CWM, but of course that takes a little time until it is available.
I found the Stock Roms forum but will that relock my boot loader as well. I'm thinking it won't but doesn't hurt to ask.

No, the only ways to relock the bootloader is to run the Relocker script in the dev forum, or manually type "fastboot oem lock" in fastboot. Flashing ROMs will not relock the phone for you.
However, it is worth noting that you cannot flash the official stock ROMs without having the phone relocked first.

Not true. we did flash the stock roms the last time ota update came out and we didnt relock the bootloader. it only required to have stock recovery because you lose root once you flash the stock rom.

You must relock the bootloader to flash the RUU file.
i think i will wait until one of the developers or x makes a ota rooted build, usually when all the major ota comes somebody makes a rooted flash leak about it,

So let me see if I understand (I read a few articles about this) I don't have to be rooted to flash this? What I'm wondering is if I do flash this without root and unlocked bootloader, how would I go about reverting back to Gingerbread if I wanted too?

In my observations you would be able to flash it fine without root. But in order to go back to GB you would need to unlock your hboot. You'll be able to unlock it after you flash.

im no expert by any means but if i had to guess you would have to unlock your bootloader then flash a custom recovery then modify your main ver of your phone like what this thread says http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1526316
there is a easy flashable in recovery zip in i think post #4 of that fourm that might be easier than the tool in post #1 of the forum.
but you will probably want to wait for someone to answer who acually tested it or know for sure.

True. If he tried to go back to GB after flashing the ICS he would get the mainver error if he tried flashing a boot.img in hboot. If he used fastboot to flash the boot.img he would get no error.
So I'm running rooted stock with an unlocked bootloader at the moment. If I wanted to flash this, do I need to re-lock the bootloader?

Yeah, I got the phone from a local Verizon employee the day it came out. It came in a white box. Pretty cool that it is S-Off. The plastic faceplate has a crack through it though, I think the quality control might have been skipped on these employee versions. I never dropped it, the crack just appeared.
Anyway back to Roms. I hope it is true that I can just flash a rooted rom. Anybody know for sure?
Is there a way to pull a copy something off of the phone to help with the ongoing s-off efforts?

what is your hboot?
is it an ENG hboot or is it the stock hboot_1.02.0000?
if ENG you could pull that it could be of use if/when s-off comes for this phone.
BUT it's really not a big deal as I already have a friend who does have the ENG hboot for this phone so he will be giving me it, just wondering if you have it as well, and if they would be the same.

We don't mean to be Debbie Downers, but there are just a few very knowledgeable devs working on getting the bootloader unlocked and have so far not managed to do that. What you claim to have done is what pretty much everybody is talking about on this forum and there's a bounty for it too.If you have anything showing you went from the latest 2.xx ota to fully unlocked we'd all give you hero status.

I'm not looking for hero status or any fanfare. I know what I did and wanted to help so I posted the steps that I followed to get unlocked because I didn't do anything special. I posted the method and the only way to prove it would be to get another DNA and do it again because posting a screenshot of my device now means nothing
If the steps I took helped others then I'm happy and if it doesn't then I'm sorry for unintentionally misleading some.
Before bashing or accusing me of trying to mislead I would suggest trying the steps I took because I have no reason to lie and didn't claim to do some masterful wizardry of hacking either

You are wrong about something here. You CANNOT unlock the bootloader of a phone that is on the ota and hasn't previously been unlocked. That is why there is a 500 dollar bounty for the person who finds the exploit that allows us to do that.

Ok. Like I said before I know what I did and the steps I took. All I can say is try it. Other than that there's no point in me going in circles.
Try the steps I took and hopefully it works

The step you listed is to unlock the bootloader. You provided no other info besides that. It is simply not possible to do that if you are on 2.04. If you did somehow manage to do that then explain it and go collect your 500 bucks.

"unlocked" has nothing to do with bootloader being locked down. Plenty of info in this forum concerning locked bootloaders and the options available to us who don't have a MDK base which had an exploit
Unless you have the MDK bootloader, sadly you are not unlocked.
MDK is the only unlockable bootloader, and if you have no idea what I am talking about, you are NOT unlocked and you should do some reading before attempting anything. Hashcode is currently working on a version of Safestrap that is compatible with MJ7 and up, but it is in alpha/very early beta and does not boot anything at the moment.

There's no such thing as an "unlocked" bootloader for this phone. There's an exploit in MDK that lets users bypass the bootloader. That exploit was closed with the ME7 update.

By definition, when you use said exploit, you unlock your bootloader for modification. Please don't uselessly correct people especially when they aren't incorrect in the first place.

Not really. Unlocking a bootloader is different than a bootloader with a Loki exploit.

Just had this discussion with @riker147 over PM. Using his analogy with my additions:
Entering a house through the window doesn't unlock the door, but it does give you free rein to do so.

That's a very good way to put it lol although you could unlock the door once you're in the house, not exactly the same here. Using Loki is no different to us end users, but a fully unlocked bootloader would make things easier for people like the TWRP team or AdamOutler.

Meh, done arguing. Basically what I'm saying is you can have a custom recovery with the exploit.
