Read the stickies man. I recommend you root, unlock bootloader, and flash a romantic. Look through them and decide which you like and which had the features you want.

Read instructions from Adam Outler's posts...it explains how to unlock and root your bootloader. Ahh....I forgot. Before you do any of that, you must install working ADB on your pc. If you have some experience in rooting, you probably know what I'm talking about....

Yep, you definitely want to flash a romantic, makes the phone that much better!
I would suggest spending some time just reading through the various threads so you get a general idea of whats going on before you jump into it. Then once you know what you want to do. Go for it!

Anyone have a good idea if we are gonna get CM9 for the AT&T version of the Note soon? Its ok at stock but I'd be so happy to be able to throw ClockWork on it.

So far, this forum is the friendliest I have seen, so welcome. Like others have mentioned, there is an Alpha build of CWM available, but as of right now, flashing anything triggers the flash counter, which can prevent you from utilizing your warranty for an exchange. If you are worried about having to return your Note for some reason right now, I would wait until we have a workaround for the flash counter. If not, we have the TPC ROM and DaG's OC/UV kernel that are both stable and will get rid of the problems with the stock ROM.
As with any ROM or development, don't ask for ETA's in the future. Seeing as you are new to this, nobody will be mad, but continued pestering will drive devs away and get people very upset. Now that you know, I'm sure you won't be a problem. haha. Also, with CyanogenMod, asking for ETA's is even more frowned upon usually. You're fine though, no worries. And as I said before, welcome.
On the Infuse forums, we had several devs driven away by people pestering devs for ETAs, asking unnecessary and repetitive questions without reading, and constant bickering and fighting in the forums that just cluttered threads with useless bullcrap. I hope that our forum stays clear of the level of asshattery that occurred there, but if you do your part to stay clear of it, then we will all be able to work together and have a great community.
Just to make clear, I'm not ragging you at all for asking, as you are new, just making some friendly suggestions to keep you and all of us happy from here on out. I wish everybody was as friendly and accepting as you. Haha.

Hi just got s2 today exchanged desire HD. Going to root on Monday but noticed there are 3 development areas for this phone how do I know which one is for my phone?
Thanks, PS while I'm here which ROM is recommended and why

Regarding which rom:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1612881
As for the 3 development. Check about phone under settings. Make sure you have the i9100 instead of the i9100G. If you have the i9100G, there is only 1 development section.
If you have the i9100, just check out the other 2 development sections.

Put it this way mate...
His answer is actually right. Your usage pattern, mine, and his are unlikely to be the same. Taste as well. Therefore best ROM discussion is a moot point.
On different sub forum, he mentioned that you should take precautions differentiating I9100 and I9100G. If you need additional explanation, please read the sticky thread in the Original Dev sub-forum stating the difference.
My last note, don't write anything when you're emotional. It will just backfire.
Note to OP - acting like a **** won't get you the help/info you're after. On the contrary, I'd be surprised if you get much help after that. Kaze asked a valid question.
The 3 development sections have nothing to do with anything re: rooting your phone (or anything else for that matter).
You need to start with something easy by the looks of things, might want to read the Stickies. No roms are recommended. Asking for rom recommendations is the height of laziness. Try a bunch of roms out until you find one you like the same as everyone else.

Note to you, sell your S2 and get a iPhone or Nokia 3310.
When your new to a forum or should I say a part of a forum your there looking for help. I.e. the whole point of a forum.
I know that trying roms out is a personal preference but it is quite nice to have a couple of opinions to start out but hey that was clearly too hard to do.
This is meant to be a question and answers area so asking questions is what is meant to happen. What is the point in having a forum if no one is wiling to have a discussion about things.
Only seen this kind of attitude in certain places, quite sad really

Yes but you miss the point. This question has already been asked a million times over, no need for another topic, go read the ones already created. This is specifically why mods have created sticky topic telling you not to ask this question and why the user who you *****ed about gave you the link.

Plenty of discussions going on.
well put it this way I just read the thread pl4sma told me to read and I'm still not really much clearer why there are 2 sub forums in development area, and by the looks of it I'm not the only one confused so that is a valid question.
The second part I was simply asking for opinions rather than flashing consistently to find what I want. I find as you use the phone you realise which bits are best and change ROM based on that, when you initially start using you don't really know which one to try so it is nice to get opinions and maybe base your first try on what others think.
You have to remember that everyone starts out new and its over time you work things out. Doesn't mean people should be flamed instantly. Search doesn't always give desired results.
Plus if people don't want to answer things over and over then surely they can simply choose not to respond

One is original development the other uses bits and pieces from other devs to build the roms . How to tell as usual its in the stickies .
The second part I was simply asking for opinions rather than flashing consistently to find what I want. The what is best rom is banned due to the thousands of exact same posts and the fact that users and their needs are different .
The what is the simplest rom for me to start learning how to flash SGS2 is an acceptable type of question .
You have to remember that everyone starts out new and its over time you work things out. Doesn't mean people should be flamed instantly. Search doesn't always give desired results.
No but you normal read the rules followed by the stickies faqs and guides first .
Plus it was you that started the bad behaviour with your reply to the first valid answer you received .
Plus if people don't want to answer things over and over then surely they can simply choose not to respond
Its the ones who refuse to read and ask the same stuff over and over that dont really belong as they just take .

Thanks for another decent reply, I understand the differences now and is really all that was needed. As you can see from the original question the ROM part was at the end but having a start point would have been nice.
problem I had with first reply is they probably took more time to find the link they did then it would of taken to answer the question.
This discussion would have ended there and then, but instead giving such an unhelpful response caused all of this.
Lessons to be learned by all I think.

Sorry to say it, but nobody is going to hold your hand like that on xda. That being said, like the guy before me said, it is very easy to learn the process as we have all had to. The best, I repeat, best thing you can do is read read read and search search search. Two years ago, I too did not know how to root or do anything else related to romming my phones, but learned through reading. Everything you need to know and much more is carefully laid out for you already, you just have to read it yourself.

I used the above website to root and it worked flawlessly. Rooted and installed ClockworkMod in minutes. This website also has a bunch of other tips, tricks, apps, ROMs, etc, all centered around the Galaxy Note. Just make sure when you root, flash ROMs, etc, you use the correct stuff. There are two Galaxy Notes. They have different processors and, therefore, have different root methods, ROMs, etc. On RootGalaxyNote, there is a section for both.
BTW, I am also running OnlyOne ICS ROM and its awesome!
/facepalm
Im ALMOST surprised the flaming hasn't started already.
First thing that comes to mind.. if you can't be bothered to search, and read the HUGE POSTS stickied to the tops of the forum labeled "ROOTING FOR DUMMIES" and "HOW TO ROOT" - why do you want your Note rooted? What is it going to do for you?
Read, Read, Read. I read the forums for a week before even thinking about beginning a root.
What I do is open the xda app and spend many sleepless hours reading. Alot. My wife knows that at 2am she can roll over and see me reading, reading, reading xda. Just long press your device and subscribe. Makes it show under the favorites tab.

All roms are google because google makes android but whenever you buy a phone the company puts there software on top of android. The nexus didnt have any software added so its a pure google rom. Go to the thread I sent you and look for CyanogenMod.

ROMs are phone dependant. What you are looking for is an unaltered version of android, like your nexus had. The closest you will find is a ROM like Cyanogen mod... CM for short, or one that says AOSP in the name (Android open Source Project).
Really you should read the stickies in the main forum and research a little about installing ROMs on a phone. You should not just jump in with no knowledge and expect to get it the way you want right away. This is a lot of the time a trial and error thing until you find a ROM that suits your tastes.
Good luck in your search for a new ROM.

You have a lot of reading and research to do if you ended up paying someone on Craigslist to root your phone. For all you know it only has root and still has the locked bootloader and stock recovery. READ, READ, and then READ SOME MORE.

Yes the galaxy nexus and galaxy note 2 are two total different roms. The note has samsung touchwiz which has alot of great features that pure aosp doesnt but if you are looking for aosp I would suggest cm10.1 or liquidsmooth my 2 favorit aosp roms. Just like the guy stated be sure you know what you are doing before you delve any deeper and have a bricked phone!

A good start for you is go to settings then all the way at the bottom select about phone. See what build your phone is on and also what andeois version (4.1.2 oe 4.2.2 etc) search for qhat your phone has as those and you can find out if your running a stock or custom rom. From there someone can better help you choose a rom to test. But keep in mind roms come down to what you like not qhat everyone else likes. I'm currently running the transnebula tab rom and loving right now. But always read read read before doing anything if you're new to this. Then when you think you're ready read some more then test

Read more.... lots more and jump in! It's a lot if work, but you can make your own, but you will need research. You won't get the info you need by asking, you won't get enough to succeed. Sure I could point you to the ROM kitchen thread or a thread with guides to compile and AOSP ROM from source, but I'm betting you dont know what that means yet. Which is why I say research then when you get stuck people are very helpful.
Ps guys I agree he's not ready yet and is probably best running someone's work, but I always encourage new development
