[Q] Phone slow when usb connected. - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi Guys,
Is it just my phone that is slowing down in CPU speed when connected to a USB cable PC USB or Charger?
I was getting about 50% less cpu speed with usb debugging on, turned the feature off and now it's only about 10% slower, is this normal?
I'm on stock 4.1.2 with Perseus kernel. Same "issue" with the full stock rom.

isn't it obvious that questions go in the Q&A forum?

Discharging Battery on USB

I am having a strange issue on my Xperia S I would like to know if this is impacting other people. I am running Build 6.0.A.3.67 (FR) and when I charge my phone through the USB Hub (externally powered) it will actually begin discharging instead of charging in certain circumstances.
Here is how it can be reproduced:
1) Plug phone into USB Hub with PC (W7x64) in Standby mode - Phone will show as being charged by AC and battery will charge without issue.
2) Wake PC out of Standby - This will cause the Phone to switch from being charged in AC mode to USB mode but phone seems to continue to charge.
3) Put PC in Standby mode again - Phone will stop charging and will actually begin to discharge at a very fast rate 5% / hour.
To check actual charging status (charging AC/USB or discharging) go to Settings -> About Phone -> Status
To get the phone to go back to AC charging status it is necessary to unplug the USB cable from the phone and re-insert it and it will go back to charging in AC mode. It seems there is something in the phone software or kernel that blocks going from USB mode back to AC mode without unplugging the USB cable.
I have tried 2 powered USB hubs (D-Link and Dr. Bott) and same issue with both. I have tried 2 different USB cables and tested the same steps using my HTC Desire and Flyer and issue only occurs on the Xperia S. 1 difference is the 2 HTC devices always show USB charging mode and never AC but they continue charging without issue as PC goes from Standy to Actve to Standby again.
Can someone else please try to see if their phone also behaves the same way when following the steps above? Does anyone have any suggestions on how to fix? My only option currently is to charge only with an AC charger and not with the USB cable connected to my PC USB hub or I can wake up with my phone dead in the morning.
Thank you for any advice (sorry for the long post)

[Q] Galaxy s 2 charging mode

Hello I recently got a new Samsung gt-i9100 smartphone I had it updated and rooted to the XXLPS ICS 4.0.3 Firmware.
I have problem that the phone charges very slow like ~12% per hour with both the PC USB cable and the original wall charger.
I know that the phone supposed to charge very slow in USB mode however I've noticed that even when charging trough the wall charger the phone still charges in USB mode. (I can see it in the phone status menu)
My question is: Is there there really another charging mode (shown in phone status) when charging trough the wall charger?
Can I fix this somehow? I did factory reset and wiped data but the problem still exists.

Must be the problem of your ROM...

I've noticed that my car charger is recognized as in AC charge (although I think it's supposed to be DC)
I didn't notice if it charges much faster although I think it does a bit faster.
Could it be that my original wall charger is faulty? (Or maybe meant to be like this cause it says travel charger)
Or the problem is definitely within my phone.

Fast USB Charging Speed with Stock Kernel

Hi there,
In speedmod kernel there is fast USB charging speed to same speed as AC charge feature.
I want to ask is it possible to enable fast USB charging speed in stock kernel/CF-Root? Maybe CWM flashable script?
Thank you.

even the fast USB charge mode cannot match ur AC charge speed ma8
the mode just ensures that when u connect 2 the computer the mass storage is disabled and ur phone will only charge no data transfer happens

I don't think so. I can still copy data to USB when USB charging in speedmod kennel. It is only related with the charging voltage modification.

[Q] Is USB charging good for battery?

Hi all,
This is my first post here so please excuse me if I break any rule.
I have recently installed Cleanrom on my SGT 10.1 Wifi only. It runs really smooth but now whenever I connect my tab to my computer, it automatically charges the battery. I don't like that because I like to do a full re-charge when battery level is very low.
When I connect to my comp, I just want to transfer files, not re-charge because I figure too many re-charge cycles is not good for the battery. I could be totally wrong though.
So the questions are : is USB charging good for the battery? Can I somehow stop USB charging?
Any help is much appreciated. Thank you.
Hi, just want to share my experience for your first question...
Many forums on the internet say that USB charging is fine for the Galaxy Tab 10.1, and some users even recommend it because it charges slower than charging through the wall adapter.
However, I've found that while I charge via USB, my tab gets noticeably hotter than via the wall adapter. The part that gets hot is just to the left of the front facing camera when looking at the tab upright in landscape. It doesn't get crazy hot or anything, but it's definitely hotter than via wall adapter.
I tested it by leaving it to charge while the tab is off for 1 hour before touching the area that gets hot.
Maybe someone can perform this test to confirm/deny. Is this extra heat bad for my tab?
The supplied charger is also USB style (without the data connection), but outside the specs, so the differences are minimal.

Help, S3 is charging EXTREMELY SLOW!

Ok so I was on Omega 4.2.2 v45.1
Anyway, after about 2-3 weeks of use on this ROM, I now have charging problems! (could be hardware?)
So, I charged my phone overnight with my official S3 charger (wired) and it went from 39% to only around 65%!!!!!!
Then I took my charger to work with me (and my other S3 charger, which is an official S3 USB chord to a S3 USB plug)
So first I tried with the hard wired plug - 4 hours and it went from 59% to around 86%
Now I am at home and charging from 46%, so far I am on 47% and it has been around 10 minutes!
It is not a battery problem because I have 3 official genuine batteries and they can't all be faulty at once!!
Then I borrowed my sisters Blackberry charger which works fine on her S3 and it doesn't even charge!!!
WTF is going on? Should I just get a replacement? I have insurance but how can I unroot to stock so they can never know of this forbidden secret?
Usually it is cable related. S3 has unstable connection detection which limits to 100mA if it thinks the usb connection is unstable.
Try a new cable (not your sisters blackberry) to see if any better.
If not, there are kernels (eg perseus / devil ?) That can turn off this detection via stweaks / devil tools apps...
If still not, return to stock and test. May be faulty usb port in your s3.
There's about 3 threads a day created here for slow charging so please do use search, as per forum rules

But this is the problem, my sister has same phone and my friends and they use my charger and works perfect for them, but I use mine or their charger, then slow charger so I am thinking it is my phone
How do I get this kernel update, I am now on I9300_Omega 4.1.2_v43.6 (I just downgraded from 4.2.2 because it used more battery and less stable)
Also,Thanks for help
UPDATE! OK it is hardware related because I just had to move the cable a bit to get it to charge! so my S3 USB mini socket is damaged, but if so, why does it still charge? (even though charge is dead slow, so slow now it hasn't charged from 46% it's still on 46%!!!))
Stability detection... that's why. As mentioned in previous post
