[Q] Cracked screen - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Ive recently purchased an S3 with a cracked screen, Touch is working perfect and theres no colour leak
question is Would i get away with just replacing the outer glass. How would i know if the amoled needs replacing or other parts of the screen
im no stranger to fiddling with hairdryers and prying screens so that wouldnt phase me
i am sorry if this has been posted elsewhere. ive been searching across the net and didnt come across what i was looking for

You can replace the glass only. Lots of videos on youtube for that. Google for a glass replacement, you can find a genuine one for about 30$.

You can try to replace it, although there is no guarantee that you will succeed. Some luck is needed

Wrong forum .
Search around for the how to replace glass only + YouTube video of steps .

For some reason my 1st post didn't take!
Try the AT&T store. A colleague of mine dropped his new iPhone 4 last week smashing the camera lens. On the off chance he went to the AT&T store, and although the part was not there in the store, they have ordered it for him free/gratis. Never hurts to ask! I was dumbfounded when he told me this, but it happened nevertheless.
Guess my 1st post did take cos' I see you posted the same question in both General and Q&A, and I apparently responded to both.
Please don't do this again!

Damn! He posted it in a 3rd???
/ignore from now on!!!
It seems i've made something wrong...
yes i've posted in three forums, just because i didn't know in which one the topic fit the best :
1-Atrix 4G General
Discussion about the AT&T Motorola Atrix 4G (general, tips & tricks, Q&A, etc)
It is a general question (looking for spare parts) and the forum description includes Q&A.
2-Atrix 4G Q&A
For all of your questions relating to the AT&T Motorola Atrix 4G
This is a question!
3-Atrix 4G Accessories
Accessories for the AT&T Motorola Atrix 4G (cases, screen protectors, batteries, etc)
not an accesorie but about spare part, so it is related.
I just wanted to maximize the chance to get an answer by posting in these forums.
Before posting, i've checked that in any of them there was a thread about replacement part for power button/fingerprint reader replacement part.
So please calm down, there is no need to ask for ignore/ban me. As all of you (i hope!) i'm human and we can do mistake and learn from. I did one and i won't do it again.

Thank you CaelanT for your answer but i'm in europe, so reaching a AT&T store will be difficult/very expensive for me...
(yes, i've posted in ATRIX 4 AT&T forum, but for this replacement part it doesn't matter, and this phone is not only sold in US: canada, belgium, UK, fance... and this is the only one forum about Motorola Atrix in this website),
It is easy to find replacement part for screen or other part on the net, but i've spent one full day looking for fingerprint reader and found..... nothing!
Moreover it is a pity for a phone which is so easy to open and replace/repair itself (tutorial available on ifixit)
Anyone else has any idea/suggestions/websites for replacement parts?
You posted a question............so I am guessing Q&A not every forum!
This is all I could find in a quick search for parts:

I am having the very same issue and none of the replies here are helping. All I am seeing is persons complaining and sending people all over the place to other post which dont have the answer. I have been searching online for a solution and I am not seeing anything other than take it back to at&t which is not possible because at&t is in America.
Anyways If there is someone kind enough to (1) explain where is the actual power button located (in the finger print scanner or under the scanner) and (2) what to change to get this fix( eg a ribbon, the finger print scanner or is there a button I should buy). I am not looking for a work around what I want to do is change what ever it is that I need to change to get fix.
Thing is, power burton is a soft button sitting below the fingerprint reader, it is completely independant. Thing is, i dont remeber if it is soldered to the motherboard or is apart. Either way, i think tou need to get it from another atrix.
Here at the forum a user posted a site that sells spare parts at low prices, perhaos they have what you need!

It's part of one of the flex cables.
There is a picture of it here at the iFixit teardown:

and one with the tape removed

Have you tried ebay? There spares all over the place and if you don't find the flex itself you may as well buy an Atrix with a broken LCD and use it for parts.

Two ebay sellers told me that the flex cable dont come with the power button so I took your advise and bought one that is damage, lcd and digitizer. This will in fact work out better for me being that my digitizer is bad ( already had order one which is on its way) I broke off the wifi button on the board and not the power button got damage.
So for all the people out ther asking about the power BUTTON ITS RIGHT UNDER THE FINGERPRINT SCANNER AND IS NOT SOLD ON THE FLEX CABLE YOU HAVE TO GET IT FROM AN OLD ATRIX SAME FROM THE WIFI EITHER GET IT FROM ANOTHER ATRIX OR BUY A MOTHERBOARD .. I have no idea where to get a board from.

[Q] Replacing broken glass and reversal of x-axis

Sadly, I managed to crack the glass on my Prime last night. The LCD is fine. It's just the glass that's broken.
I've found surprisingly few articles/videos on replacing the glass, but enough to feel confident in replacing the glass myself.
I read several posts across the web from folks that got the x-axis reversed on the digitizer after re-assembling their Prime. From what I read (and from rational detuction), it seems like it'd be VERY difficult to put the digitizer flat-ribbon cable of the replacement on backwards. It's a short cable and it's flat. 'Just doesn't seem easy to put it on backwards.
Instead, I worry that there may be two different formats of digitizer glass (it's common for products to have multiple revs. and have changes like this).
I don't want to make the mistake of ordering the wrong replacment glass.
Anyone have any info on this?
Thanks!

Yes, I have some info on this. Its called look at the thread already in place and what the fixes are for it . Do you feel better now, Mr. Righteous? I did end up finding the thread you're so gloatingly referring to. You DID notice that I didn't bump this thread, right? You may have also noticed that I contributed significantly to that thread. You could have just let this posting settle to the bottom and just leave it be, but apparently you felt the need to contribute zero and administer a spanking. Congrats! You're now my hero. Thanks for the heads-up on reading. That's highly inspirational.
Mods please close this thread. OP has found his answer but must have forgotten to request this closed and resolved Thanks !

I lol'd
There are several versions of the glass. To make a long story short, you'll either luck out and get a digitizer that works properly or the one that needs a small process to install the "driver" to make it work right (not inverted).
As for the replacement of the actual glass, it can be a right bastard if not done right. The stock LCD cracks EASILY. Same with the crappy digitizer.
Here's my post on how to replace the digitizer or LCD :
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2102746
Here's a post on how to program the right driver for the inverted prime. You can save a bunk load of money by doing this :

Pyraxiate is just an ass.
Got mine working
I had a Version 1 digitizer broken, i switched the hole digitizer+lcd from another tf201 with version 3 and it worked fine so i decided to buy a replacement from ebay, seller announced 100% tested and working digitizer so I trusted but when the item came i got an inverted x-axis digitizer,
What i did was ran the Asus unlocker app(suppoused jsut for ICS but worked on my OTA upgraded JB)
install the recovery TWRP 2.5.0.0
install the upgrade hairybean 4.2,1 bootloader and recovery (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1674827)
install the Hairybean 2.2 with the option, kernel for inverted x-axis prime.
rebooted and enjoy the 4.2.1 JB Transformer Prime
THANKS

[Q] Logic Board Swap?

Hello all on the xda, hope you're all doing well.
Once again I prove my nooby prowess by bombarding the forums and hopefully asking a question a few others have lingering.
A local seller has a Galaxy SII for sale for £70 as it's got an IMEI bar on it.
If I were to take the S2 and put my logic board in it, would that also transfer the IMEI and my current system of ParanoidAndroid?
I know it sounds like quite a stupid question but the opportunity could be there for me to have what is essentially a brand new S2 in noble black for 70 quid as my screen has been smashed by a blundering drunkard who thought they'd try and bottle me and instead, hit my phone.
Thanks for taking the time to read this and as the weekend fast approaches, may I wish everyone on the forums a good one
Peace out
When you say logic board are you referring to the mother board?
I'm no expert, but the way I see it, if you replace the whole motherboard and all components of that phone with yours, it should work since it sunds similar to replacing a broken screen+digitizer which many have done successfully.
Maybe some of the folks here who know more can give a verdict, but IMO £70 for a brand new unlocked S2, I'd give it a shot.
Good luck!
Sent from my GT-I9100 using xda app-developers app
Of course it should work. The other way would be to use the screen off of the new one and put it on yours(depends on model colour).
I would also suspect the other phone will have more problems than hes telling you.
Thanks for the responses, I found that the phone was just locked out via a lock pattern haha! Guy sold it but will be getting another for sale soon as he works within a mobile phone industry with Orange (which I'm on) so that's alright how difficult does everyone reckon a complete reshell including screen and digitizer would be? thanks guys

that would be an expensive affair though
If you can back yourself to do it, it'd be pretty cheap. Many vids on YouTube showing you how to replace the screen and digitizer. Seems fiddly..but worth a try if you know what you're doing. Getting it done professionally would be a tad expensive.

hi, do you know where to buy a working logic board even used? Can't find on ebay
Yeah eBay.
You can try Amazon...

[Q] Screen Repair

Hello people yesterday my screen got i little crack in it. The amoled screen is ok it is working prefectly no damage at all. Its the outer front glass screen that is damaged. I can buy this Outer glass screen on ebay for like 5 dollars, but my question is can i replace this and how ? I couldnt fine anything on google or youtube.
Rubbish. I just did a Google search & got dozens & dozens of useful hits. If you don't have the basic initiative to find a how to, I very much doubt you have the aptitude to fix this yourself. Might want to leave it to more qualified people.
I think theres a post by Kilometer that has a link for the video.
Or theres one in a motherboard thread I created.
