i feel like a real noob asking this but i just got a completely stock Note2 handed down to me and im looking to unlock the bootloader... most of the instructions seem simple using AdamOutler's how to thread... my one question is though once i unlock the the bootloader, does that also mean im rooted aka superuser? im pretty sure it does but i want to make sure...
ive rooted and rommed my thunderbolt and my S3 many times but whenever it comes to messing with the bootloader i always get a little nervous for some reason.
No its good to ask questions first not later lol. The thread said it must be launched using a ROOTED Rom. You must be rooted before you run Casual and unlock the bootloader. I'm not sure what the current rooting method is since I rooted mine the second I got it, is rooting using the Samnsung PC tools.

thats what i thought too however in the thread (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2043636) it does say
"Prerequisites
any I605VRALJB stock bootloader and a stock ROM or a rooted stock ROM. "
so thats where it threw me off
Na u gotta be completely stock...I bought my note 2 brought it home and rooted all within like 30 minutes its cake
Don't root first (and don't take the OTA update)...start from pure stock, run the casual exploit and then flash the suckitverizon bootloader via odin. I suggest spending some time reading the entire bootloader unlock thread Adam Outler made before doing anything. An hour or two or research and learning will prevent many hours of frustration if you do something wrong. Watch his youtube video and follow the directions carefully. It's easy and the whole thing only takes a couple of minutes but if you do it wrong it can be a major pain. Good luck and enjoy.

Just run it like your are now. When you're finished it will be unlocked, rooted, with a custom recovery. ... basically completely ready to start flashing.

Just a quick question why are there two dev sections for this device? what is the difference? is one for the older gb and froyo roms and the new for ICS and soon to be jellybean? I am looking into how to root this for a friend. I have a samsung gs2 with an unlocked bootloader I have never rooted a phone with a locked bootloader. So how do you guys go about this? For my phone I have a pc program called odin that does low level flashing so all I do is use it to install cloclworkmod or twrp and then flash su and install the.apk and busybox. Is there sometihng similar for this phone or does everything have to be done by ADB? If someone explains which dev section I should go to I will figure it out myself but the more info yoy guys can give me the better. I do still have to find out what software my friend has. I also want her to do this by herself so I want to be able to explain it to her. Thanks in advance.
Use this. It's doesn't it all for you.

The Android Development and Original Android Development forums are organized pretty much as they sound: Original Development will have threads for programs, mods, roms, kernels, etc. that are the original work of the developer. Android Development has threads for those that are built off of someone else's existing work (e.g. A rom that is a collection of tweaks pulled from other roms). I agree with the previous poster on using regawMOD, it is the simplest way to unlock the bootloader, flash a recovery and gain root access all at once. That being said, if your friend is on 1.22.651.3, there is an additional step to manually move the root package to the sd card. Read page 80-84 on the dev's thread for more info.

Thank you to everyone that answered I looked around after I posted and saw that all in one app to do the whole process that is cool I figured that would be the way to go. I will Be a let to root this phone with no problem. I gotta say we have come a long way from entering adb commands to push things to a phone to just a click and boom everything is done the beauty of xda.

Just use the evo lte toolbox and do htcdev unlock. It's a little more complicating then odin l,Odin is more like using an RUU and turning it into a kitchen to flash modified roms

Sorry for the redundancy in the post. I know there are similar threads for other devices, but, I haven't seen one for the Note 2. I honestly don't have time to make a mistake as my phone is what keeps my businesses alive.
Here are my objectives with my phone:
1. Stay rooted. Do I need to install a new ROM, or anything to keep from getting OTA's? I would suspect that Samrizon is going to be sending out another OTA to lock the phone again. Do I need to do anything to prevent getting OTA's? I like this ROM, but want to be rid of the bloat. Is there a standard ROM that is cleaned up and steamlined?
2.Get rid of bloatware. Amazon, Amazon MP3, NFL, etc. I'd like those gone. Any reason to keep Kies? I've got Titanium Backup, and I've used Root Explorer in the past with my T-Bolt. I would like bloatware REMOVED, not stashed someplace.
3. Wireless Tether: My phone is the only provider of internet I have at my farm. Is this just a standard Wireless Tether download from the Store? I'm trying to workaround the charge for hotspotting.
4. Multi-view: I suppose I would like to know how to add apps to the Multi-View window, and start using that. I figure it could come in handy.
Thanks in advance!

Good question. I'm not sure. I took the OTA update, and rooted this morning. I followed the instructions starting with Casual, pushing the Baseline via Odin, Casual/reboot, and then pushing the BackAtCha Odin file. The phone rebooted with the TeamWin. I have access to the bootloader. That makes me? I just downloaded CleanRom ACE, as I would suspect that would be the ROM I'd like to start with. Thanks for the reply.
EDIT: I see where this is going. Working through the unlock thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2043636
And done.
If you ran Adam's Casual Jailbreak with BackAtcha then you should be unlocked as well. Just don't want anyone to soft brick
CleanROM is probably what you are looking for...basically stock, just WAY leaner. Beans is awesome as well for the 4.1 based ROMs.
Take your time. Read. Then slowly devolve into a crack flasher like me!

Back up your stock rom with twrp first to your sd card.
I've got CleanROM ACE installed but am having a couple of issues. I have no volume for YouTube or other media applications. I've gone into Settings to adjust the volume and I am unable to move the slider.
Second, I'm getting really weird text messages from the number 6250. The message text is a bunch of numbers, or just the number 2. I've received 5 or 6 since flashing the ROM. The sending number is 6250 and the sender name is VZWNMN and VZWPIN. Any ideas?

Lucky for me I have the only version of the Note 2 with a locked Bootloader from "BigRed". i came here to ask for assistance because I want to use my device to its full potential but I definately do not want to brick my device or harm it in anyway.
What I am confused about is the whole process of unlocking the boot loader and rooting. I have read extensively on how to do both but I don't know what process I need to do first. Do I root first and then unlock the boot loader?? Or Vice Versa??
I am also skeptical about some of the Boot loader Unlock methods I see floating around online. I have read up on a couple different ways to do it but when reading the comments under the tutorial article it seems there are alot of unhappy Note 2 owners that were not successful with the methods What I am asking here is if someone can point me to the CORRECT way to unlock the boot loader with the most up to date information regarding the latest update Verizon has put out. If I can be pointed to a good article on the correct way to root the device that would be even better.
I obviously know there is no "fail safe" way of going about doing this and completely understand all the risks. I just want to minimize those risks. Especially on a $600+ device!
Thank you for any help that is offered!!
A little tip for you. I've found is best to just stick strictly to xda for guides like this. Most those random guides steal the work of the hard working devs here. I've seen a lot of bricks of people just following one if them.
Here is the only way to unlock. It's easier then it looks.

^ what he said :good:
i used that method literally 2 days ago. it's really simple. just click and follow instructions. just follow the guide and you can even watch the youtube video of someone doing it before you do. once you have the bootloader unlocked and twrp flashed (one you finish the guide you will have twrp installed) you can hold the power volume up and home button while the device is off to boot into recovery (twrp). from there before you do anything i would recommend flashing the latest twrp and then you can go ahead and flash whatever roms you want. probably gunna want to stick with clean rom. it's basically stock rom with all the scum removed and a lot of root tools added.
Can I piggyback here?
My similar question is that when I got my phone 2 weeks ago the Verizon salesperson did THE UPDATE when he setup my phone. My system says I have 4.1.1 but otherwise I have not done a thing to it. Do you need to know the kernal version?... Which steps do I use to unlock and root to Cleanmod? Thanks.

you'll want to unlock with the jailbreak method, very good instructions, there's even a video to walk u thru it.

use the method linked above! It works for both firmware versions that are currently available.
also very easy given that you follow the instructions
As others have said, follow the directions. Go slowly, measure twice and cut once. Then you can start feeding the ROM flashing addiction.
I am so confused, and let me be the first to apologize for my stupidity. Many years ago I had a Droid, and life was so easy, you rooted, you added a ROM and Kernel, and life was good. Today, I have the Galaxy S4 and I am rooted, and I thought this was going to be as easy as it was back then, but I got to read about the nightmares people were having, so I stayed rooted and didn't go any further, for I was afraid I was going to brick my new phone. Now, I am reading that you can't go further because of the bootloader is locked, so how are people loading ROM's with it locked? So, as a person such as myself who has not a clue about all this techy stuff, can you load a ROM with a locked bootloader? I am asking if someone can simplify all this for me. Thanks.

Did your phone take the ME7 update or come with ME7 on it ? If so, root, debloat, Titanium Backup, play with Nova Launcher for customization is about as far as you can go at present. If you are lucky enough to have an MDK build then you can root, install custom recovery, flash roms & kernels to your heart's content. To find which you have : If you are stock, go to settings, more, about phone. Scroll down. If you see VRUAME7, in baseband, build and have not installed any custom roms then you are out of luck. If you see VRUAMDK, Congratulations! You are golden.

Verizon has locked down the bootloader for ME7 based roms...I personally would not alter the state of your phone until a bootloader unlock has been achieved. Please see Hascode's OP at http://forum.xda-developers.com/sho...E7] Safestrap Recovery v3.5x [WIP DISCUSSION]

This why I joined this forum, for everyone is so knowledgeable and willing to help. I thank you all for you replies, and yes, I am on ME7, and I guess I have to sit it out until there is hope. Thank you.
First, let me say to please move this post if I am incorrectly posting this in the wrong forum; this appears to be the spot for me to post this, but I am not above being wrong
Currently I am running a 4.2.2 ROM, Bonestock 1.1.3, on the MDK firmware. I guess my first question is, should I fully upgrade OTA to current stock by factory resetting my phone for the updates? Or, is there a way to use my current setup using TWRP 2.5.0.3 to flash to a true 4.4.2 image?
I've picked up on a few threads here and there about upgrading/downgrading and booting and whatnot; but none as easy as "download this ROM and flash it". Now I completely understand that with bootloaders and software versions it becomes increasingly difficult to break down an image and root it and whatnot, so the simple "get this and flash it" method may be unatainable. However, the few threads I DID find, are so cumbersome and involved that a 20 minute process takes hours to complete because a step may be missed, or an error occurred that wasn't anticipated, or whatever.
I apologize for my ignorance and inability to understand all that is involved, but if someone could kindly point me down the right path, that would be sweet. With the internet by my side and my own personal ability to muddle through things and understand as I go, I should hope I can get KitKat on my phone sooner than later. I've muddled through the original root of my S4, my previous phone RAZR and my OG Droid before that .... along with an A500 tablet....if only it were put a bit more simply, I could accomplish this as well!
Thanks in advance for the help, if any is available
Wrong section, questions go in Q&A, only development goes in the development section.
Anyway, if you're on MDK you can continue flashing roms as normal. Extended directions are for safestrap users that are on locked bootloader firmware.

MDK upgrade
Seems like the question asked is in the Question section so not sure why the blast.....
You are lucky to have an MDK phone, as these are pre a lot of lockdowns that make custom Roms more complicated to work with. Because it is MDK, you can root, get a recovery module and after backups load a new Rom. Keep reading for details, but you have the easiest to work with.

do not take any OTA with your phone,
Do not take an OTA because it will upgrade you from the mdk firmware which is th easiest to work with. Once you put a custom rom on, it will cease to allow OTA and protect you from carrier and mfg nasties that can try to cripple your phone.
