[Q] Facebook connection errors - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-I777

Anyone else having connection errors with the main Facebook app or even trying to link their Facebook account with other apps like, Ruzzle and FriendCaster? I have tried everything and nothing seems to work. It's just odd...

Sounds like a Facebook error. Also more info would be nice like rom
Sent from my GS4 running CM11 Kandy Kane

Sorry about that. I posted this in the ROM thread but I don't think it's ROM related.
ROM: [Rom] AOKP(Jellybean 4.1.2) | Task650 & Ktoonsez (12/2)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1574718

Happens to me also. I'll just be scrolling through facebook, and the "connection error" bar will come down even though I have a perfectly good connection. It won't load anything new until the app is killed and restarted. And then it's only a matter of time before it happens again. I'm going to go ahead and blame it on the app.

It's not the ROM. It's been happening on my gnex, nexus 7, and my wife's HTC one S. ****ty app is ****ty.

Excellent. At least we have come to the conclusion that it's Facebook and not the ROM or my phone. I guess we'll just have to keep harassing Facebook until they finally so something...

did you guys modify hosts file to block ads? I did that and had connection trouble with some sites/apps. I couldnt pinpoint the entry so I just cleared it. just a thought.

Wow that was literally my problem! I use AdAway, disabled ad blocking, and Facebook works beautifully now...! Let me see if I can mess with the files to not block Facebook. Thank you!

no prob.
for anyone else, be sure to disable the blocking (meaning, clear the hosts of entries) instead of just uninstalling. uninstalling adaway while its still enabled leaves the host filled with all the adblocking lists. they should change that.

I'd rather not disable my adblocker... I'll see if I can figure out what's causing it. Maybe not though, as I haven't had any trouble at all recently. Perhaps the hosts were updated to account for this.

I still have AdAway blocking, I just had to uncheck graph.facebook.com. Don't know why they would want to block Facebook. I emailed the developer to see if there was any more Facebook restrictions.

Atrix and google plus

At the risk of being a little off topic, has anyone tried the new google plus app? What are your thoughts? I'm still waiting for my invite, if you have an extra invite, i'd like to try it out.
I'm curious what other atrix user experiences are with the android app.

I heard it doesn't do the video chat/hangout stuff, but it does most of the others. Looks to be a very interesting take on the Social realm. While it appears they are going after the Twitter & Facebook real estate, they are going at it in a different way. I dig it. Now only if they would only get around to sending out more invites already, haha.
It's pretty cool. Obviously still needs work like Hangout but i only have a few friends using it thus far, once i get more, i'll play around with it more.

Yea, I figured that would be the crux right now. It's great to have a social spot, but what good is it if you don't know anyone yet? Soon enough, I suppose.
Looks like they had to shut down the existing users invite service (which they opened up yesterday) due to "insane demand."

Definitely not experiencing that issue. Notifications are quite instant, sometimes faster than the little red square that appears on Google sites.
You might want to check out your Google+ notification settings here: https://plus.google.com/settings/plus
and make sure it is set to push notifications at the top as well as making sure the appropriate check boxes are checked.
Mind seems to be pretty consistent.

Don't feel bad. They styled it to look just like the facebook notification settings page, which is where facebook sends you all sorts of emails/sms, so I was so used to going to that page and unchecking everything.

Hulu apk that works

For those that didn't see this till recently (like myself) this hulu apk will work on our phone. You will have to uninstall hulu first if you already have it installed.

Lets me log in, go to load a vid, Buffers forever, says it appears you are having network issues Please wait or try again later. I'm on my wifi at home, not 2 feet from my router, have full bars on my network, can stream from everything else, but this buffers endlessly.

Ad blocking will generally cause this issue. If you have ad blocking on your phone try disabling it or adding the ad urls to the whitelist of your ad blocking software.

Yes I get those too, rather annoying. I hope its just the site and not some app or virus.
I just got one
This happens to me every now and again, and its happened on XDA more than once.
I took a screenshot just now when it happened.
It only pops up in the browser so I assume it is most likely an ad, but it is also aware of my location.
It goes here:
gotfreebies . org/contest/au-ipad-contest/index.php?c=AU-s2
(I'm not allowed to post links so I added spaces)
It's seriously annoying and I sincerely hope something can be done about it.
I'm using a Galaxy tab 8.9 over wifi.
XDA has gotten a lot of ads lately. I hate the flash ads that play at the bottom of the screen with sound. I tend to have a few XDA tabs open and its super annoying trying to find the one thats playing.
Banner ads and flash ads don't bother me that much but these freebie.org ads just fill the entire screen on my phone. Now that is seriously annoying
had same issue. restart solved it for me.

Getting the same ads very annyoing like a pc browser hijacker redirects browser to their site get it mainly on xda but have had it 1 or 2 times on other sites.
Would be nice to know whether this Is an XDA ad or a virus.
I also get it, only on xda. I use ICS+ Browser. Very annoying.
The flash ads with sound on my desktop are extremely annoying as well. I too open multiple windows at once, and it is a real pain trying to find the noisy window.
It is an ad. It is harmless.

Is it an official xda ad? Why do they make it behave just like malware? That's what browser hijackers do. I've never seen official ads do anything as obtrusive as that.
I am getting tired of these ads, there is another similar or maybe associated ad for a site called 'mobrewards.org' too.
I get them on other phone related sites as well, just now I got one on phonearena.
I have found the google adwords complaint page and I'm going to submit a complaint.
Maybe if we all do then they'll do something about it.

The ad seems to be a browser popup, it is not associated with any apps.
It is targeted towards mobile users and it seems to only occur when using a mobile device.
If you search online for gotfreebies.org or mobrewards.org you will see that the problem is experienced by Android and iPhone users.
these ads are the ones which remind me to enable ad blocking after flashing a new firmware. adaway and root are your friends

Wakelock woes

Alright, I've tried several remedies none have yet to fix my problem.
First off, does anyone else have a huge Wakelock with gtalk.async.androidendpoint? I'm finding this info out using better battery stats.
Here's my info :
Hboot 2.27 (global Leak)
S off
Rom newts one xxx 6.0.2 (happens on all roms)
Ok, so to rule out the obvious, I've tried freezing gtalk, then stopping Google locating services.
I've also tried this with and without restoring apps/data after flashing a rom.
When doing so, I always do a full wipe.
I've read up on it, some people said it had to do with the proxy on apn settings, so I made a new apn with the same info, data came in, but didn't fix my Wakelock.
Is this a known problem? I see many posts in other forums about it, but it seems its not happening to everyone.
Any help would be appreciated

There seems to be a few people with this wakelock on the internet and no real consensus on what the cause or fix is.
What I can tell you however is my girlfriend's Nexus 4 had the same wakelock issue and I realised it was because her work's Wifi network's network filter was stopping Google services from successfully syncing and it was just trying again and again and again causing the battery to drain. I told her to stop using that wifi network and the next day I checked and the gtalk.async wakelock was gone.

yep, so the service in google framework is calling out to make sure gtalk is connected. when your school block the connection it puts a pause on it and will request again when any type of connection change is detected. i cant remember but have you tried signing out of gtalk when not using it?

I believe the GTALK_ASYNC process handles a lot more than just GTALK, a lot of Google Services are reliant on it so freezing it will cause a lot of collateral damage to Google apps and other apps that leverage services like C2DM.

it syncs for all gapps. what i was trying to do is see if you can just get that part of the sync portion off.
OP can you try this. navigate to system/apps and rename the gtalk apk to .bak reboot the phone to recovery, wipe dalvik and reboot. let it boot like normal and see if you have the wake lock without having to freeze googles framework.
this should stop the phone from ever knowing gtalk was installed and remove the wake lock problem.

Chrome Issues

Hey all,
I am having a couple odd issues with my Note 2 when running Chrome. Well, the stock interwebs app too actually.
When I go to nbcnews.com I get the mobile site, which is fine, but I can't click on anything. When I try to view a story it just highlights the link in blue but doesn't actually go anywhere. I have to long press and say open in new tab.
When I go to wowinsider.com (yes i play wow, so sue me! =]) and view an article it doesn't load the comments section. After loading the article the progress bar pauses at about 80% like it's thinking about the loading the comments but then it jumps to completed with no comments loading.
Neither of these issues were present on my GNex. I rooted the Note 2 and installed Beans 8 so soon after getting it I don't known if it was doing this before flashing. Anyone have similar issues? Is it the Note 2? Beans ROM?
Thanks

So I upgraded to Beans 9 and the issues above still exist. Anyone have any ideas? Im sure theres other sites not functioning properly but these are the two I have found that I use daily.

Ad-blocking software or a pop up blocker installed? Thats the only thing I can guess would keep only select links from working.
Now that you mention it, I'm pretty sure ad blocking is an option when installing Beans. I'll be damned if I can find it now though...
