Is it correct that the OTA update won't happen if you are on a custom or have an unlocked bootloader?
You can still potentially get the OTA if all you did was unlock the bootloader, but if you are on a custom ROM, then you won't get the update. It may try to flash, but there will be an assert failure when it verifies the system.

Is the only way to freeze the SDM 1.0 apk with Titanium BU? I don't have the paid version so the option isn't available. Any other ways to freeze the apk? Also, there was no option to decline the OTA update so I had to defer. If the SDM is frozen will this stop the request to update once the date that I set up on the defer schedule arrives?

Well just back it up with titanium and unminstall it. You can do that with the free version. And yes if you freeze it you will not get bugged for the ota and won't even be able to check for an updatein the about phone section.

It won't fail just because you have custom recovery. Recovery can process all commands used in the OTA, so it would proceed as long as all the system/file checks were good.

I meant recovery because I thought usually the recovery would say something about invalid signature. ... But as imnuts pointed out I'm wrong. Also a custom ROM isn't guaranteed because clean ROM 1.0 still had the stuff in place to receive the OTA.
In either case since the op removed sdm1.0 now he's safe.

verizon / samsung do follow xda and they have been patching holes within their devices. to be safe you should wait for dev to get this file and give you direction.
a day (maybe two) wait will not hurt you! if you jump, it could be month before you get root back.

I'll try to install the MI1 update again this time via ODIN. How can I flash to ensure it doesn't wipe the user/app storage partition and restore to stock? I don't want to fully unroot since OTA Rootkeep is the only way I can restore root in this 4.3.

I've been trying hard to find the answer and I just can't - I searched these threads for a while.
I currently have Galaxy S4 with MDK which is rooted and has the unlocked bootloader.
I have SDM and SEAndroid frozen on Titanium Backup.
I want to un-freeze those and upgrade to the newest version but still keep my root and all of my root apps. I don't care about the unlocked bootloader - all the root apps I use don't have anything to do with using the bootloader (well I have twrp installed but don't use it).
Can I use OTA Rootkeeper, unfreeze SDM and SEAndroid and take the OTA update? Will I still have root access (again remember, I don't need to have unlocked bootloader)?
I ask because I'm very happy with everything on my phone the way it is - I like where my apps are, I like everything. I don't want to bother flashing roms - I just have no interest. I want to do the update and have everything the way it was and all my folders in their place (less the unlocked bootloader) and still have root for my programs like Titanium Backup and Greenify. super su - etc.
Please - any help would be appreciated.
Afaik, taking the update will ineed cost you your current root. However, I am on stock 4.3 and root using vroot and then used a script to uninstall the foreighn superuser app and add supersu. I have experienced no ill effects as of yet, though some would say that they aren't comfortable using this root method. There is no evidence to support it being entirely safe nor malicious in intent. It does provide root and you can keep all your apps data. Though...if you take the update, I would strongly suggest a factory reset to decrease potential problems...just my 2 cents buddy

The bootloader is technically only bypassed through a Loki exploit, not unlocked.
For all intents & purposes that doesn't change anything to most users so I don't know what Richii was trying to get at.

Description: This is a guide (based similar to my previous guide for the Verizon Galaxy S III) that will help you flash a 99.9% stock factory image for the Verizon Galaxy S4 overwriting every partition on the device back to stock. The ONLY major change I have made is for your convenience I have modified the factory image to keep all your data/apps/settings and internal storage partition intact. This method should help you restore from any soft-brick that you may encounter without having to wipe your data.
Minor Warning: Please note that if you had any special mods that you had to manually flash before or move on the system partition (like Google Wallet, AOSP 4.2 apps like camera and gallery, etc...) they will be lost as you are overwriting your system partition to factory stock. Please make sure to do the needful with your mods before following this guide (for example resetting the Google Wallet app).

Okay Buddy with the MK2 builld you can only use TW based roms no ASOP/Cyanogenmod.
1.) To root u must use saferoot here:http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2565758
2.) Then you must install Safestrap 3.71 Hashcode has a thread about ithere: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2441441
3.) After doing that you want to look on this thread here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2630040
decarturbob has compiled a list of MK2 Safestrap Compatible roms.
Hope this helps buddy. Make sure you read the threads carefully and follow each step. My current fav roms are the TW(ASOP themed roms):fingers-crossed:
Thank you all for the help. Really appreciate it.
To add to my question, after rooting, running the stock ROM, can I turn off OTA updates? I keep getting an annoying notification to update.

Using Titanium Backup, you can "freeze" applications, which keeps them from running. The software update application is called SDM.
So, open Titanium, search for "SDM", the click on "Freeze!". It won't run any longer.

You flash the modules file AFTER you flash a custom ROM into a ROM slot. How did you manage to flash into a ROM slot if you can't get into Safestrap recovery?
If installing Safestrap fails and tells you you're not rooted, then either you're not rooted, or you still have Knox enabled. You'll need to be rooted before you can do any of this, so start there. See the Saferoot thread.
