Hi all,
Thanks for having me here I've been reading a long time but i finally had to register an account to post because i have ran into some problems. Here's what happened:
Chronological actions:
* I was running STOCK GB 2.3.6 (KPN_I9100XWKK2_I9100KPNKJ1_I9100XXKI4)
* I rooted it with CF-Root-SGS2_XW_XEN_KK2-v5.0-CWM5 (Still running above mentioned software versions.)
a few months passed by.
* Backup current 2.3.6 state with CWM.
* I flashed ICS 4.03 (XEN_I9100XWLP7_I9100XXLPS_I9100XENLP3)
* I rooted it with CF-Root-SGS2_XW_XEN_LP7-v5.4-CWM5
Problem:
All seemed fine at first glance. But when the phone went to sleep (screen off) it wont turn back on. Only when i press and hold the power button for over 10 seconds a few times it starts back up.
I removed cache and dalvik caches and rebooted. Still the same problem.
The battery was draining fast too, about 10% in 20 minutes, and the phone got pretty hot.
More actions:
* Backup current messed up 4.03 state with CWM.
* Restore CWM 2.3.6 KPN.
My phone seems fine and working properly. But when i open KIES my firmware is suddenly no longer supported and not updateable. Here's the weird part according to kies my firmware version is now: 'I9100XWKK2/I9100KPNKJ1/I9100XXLPS/I9100XWKK2 (KPN)'
My phone's output for *#1234#:
PDA: I9100XWKK2
Phone: I9100XXLPS
CSC: I9100KPNJ1
I did backup the kernel, system, and data partitions and had everything else selected with CWM. Now it must become blatantly obvious that i'm a noob.. Was i wrong in assuming that CWM does a complete backup, like a norton ghost image of the whole system? Why is the 'Phone' section still XXLPS and not back to XXKI4 ? Doesn't CWM backup/restore the baseband also ?
Does anyone know what i might have done wrong?
I fixed this by reflashing the old stock kernel and rerooting with cf-root and i'm back on:
PDA: I9100XWKK2
Phone: I9100XXKI4
CSC: I9100KPNJ1
Now i'm again updatable in kies.
I'm just trying to understand what i did wrong with doing backup and restore via CWM ?
I also would like to know if there's a solution for the ICS problem i had with the phone going dead when the screen goes off.
BTW I did NOT do a factory reset before upgrading to ICS. All my apps where there after i had upgraded.
Thanks for listening,
~Trail.
you want to fix it completly, theres one way
im assuming you know ur way with cwm.
1: using cwm format system, cache, data, dalvik
2: flash your stock ICS using odin
3: after first boot skip everything and wait few minutes.
4: dial this code *2767*3855#
now after boot you should have a working phone.
the code will wipe your phone and please do not restore any thing you saved on GB.
start from scratch.
Thanks atfish,
Your method sure sounds like a fool-proof way to get ICS going. It also sounds like the last resort method to me. I heard many that have upgraded to ICS without doing a factory reset. I'd hate to reinstall everything i'm using.
I'm hoping for a less rigorous method
I still would like to know why CWM didn't backup/restore the phone completely, or what i did wrong.
~Regards,
~Trail.
ill be surprised if someone who has went from GB to ICS without wipe is running trouble free.
Gb to ICS is major change of OS so its better to start from scratch and stay tension free

I do have games on there, but also half a gazillion tools
I'm trying to deduct where it went wrong so i just backed up current state and restored the same backup from a day ago and i'm still updatable. That backup was fine.
Just wanted to make sure the backup didn't contain I9100XXLPS by some error, but it really is I9100XXKI4 like i thought it was. Or CWM doesn't do anything with the baseband.
Does this mean CWM doesn't backup/restore the baseband?
~Trail.
Wow i did what you suggested starting with a fresh system and i haven't noticed any problems yet.
I first made backups of my sd card just in case. And used titanium to backup my programs.
Low and behold after booting the playstore started restoring my apps automaticly.. so thats what you ment.. LMAO.. even my contacts are back.. lil; did i know... big brother google does have some usefull features afterall
EDIT: After restoring apps i have the same problem as before. When the screen goes off it never comes back on again..
Isolated the problem to SETCPU. Once deinstalled the phone works just fine.

My phone have turned it self of or turd it self into cwm for over a week now! I've tried to update the phone, changed rom, deleted everything (that's not a must to have for the phone). But it keeps on doing it!
I have a Samsung galaxy s i9000.
Kernel: 3.1.10 devil2
Codename: Tiramisu EVO I.C.E A.G.E 1.9.5
Version: IMM76D
Android version: 4.0.4
I've tried using an old version that I installed with Odin but without success... I really don't know what I can do anymore! Only me with this problem?

Have you tried to flash back to stock firmware, then re-root.
I know how to root and how to backup the phone. A other problem that comes up when I flash a rom is that it delete everything on the phone. But I learn from my miss takes, so I save to external SD card and remove it when I'm going to "play" with the phone.
I will check the dual thing up and see if that helps. But so far is it still rebooting to cwm or just going black...

Yes I have tried that with ODIN. It was still going to 3e> even tho the phone wasn't rooted. But it's mostly when I charge my phone, when the phone goes black or 3e> mode. I've scanned it both from the phone and computer for virus but nothing was found...
Good day All.
I know I'm asking a lot, but barring trying it (on my daily driver - *gulp*), does anyone know if there is a clean upgrade path from
OEM GB
android version 2.3.6
baseband N_01.77.37P
webtop WT-1.2.0-110_OLY-6
kernel 2.6.32.9
rooted, unlocked(I think its unlocked, dosint say it but very slow to get past initial Motorola logo but no red 'unlocked', working webtop)
to the new much awaited ICS ROM (ThatROM).
I'm looking for things like 'yip, this will work, just install the zip update file and all your stuff will still be there and it will be a clean upgrade'
or the equally valid 'Hell no!, what are ya, you must be dreaming mate, no way you can expect to go from OEM GB to a leaked OS and still keep all your settings, contacts data on your SD card (internal and external). Its a clean wipe or nothing if you want to go ICS etc etc.'
many thanks for any/all replies.
cheers

I just did this yesterday (was running stock GB, rooted, unlocked) and upgraded to AtrICS. Was pretty smooth. Everything basically works, though I am having some issues with failing to get mobile data connection after the phone has been up awhile.
I wiped /system, /cache, and /data. But if you take a TitaniumBackup of all your apps before flashing the new ROM, you should be able to restore most of what your settings and apps. I recommend you selectively restore your most important apps and settings first rather than trying to blindly restore everything. I had some issues before (after doing a factory wipe of stock) with doing a full titanium restore.
thanks for sharing your upgrade experience.
I might attempt this myself now.
many thanks
cheers

Artics v2 has been on my phone for a day now. Not one issue...... Not one. But i don't use webtop. Battery drain is the biggest concern but it can last the day.

Hello kind people of XDA,
I own a Samsung Galaxy S3 (GT-I9300) have been running stock rom with root for quite a while, and been happy with it in general, until i bricked it(not sure if term "brick" would be correct) by trying to put some new fonts using an app, well basically being hasty and cocking things up.
So now i flashed
I9300XXALE8 Download (Thanks To SamMobile!)
Base Firmware: I9300XXALE8 (4.0.4)
Region Europe
Country: United Kingdom
Carrier: Unbranded
Build Date: 13 May 2012
Modem: XXLE8
CSC: OXAALE8
Change List: 554452
using odin obviously, my previous backups from kies are gone (no idea how/where) and my SD card died on the occasion, which is an issue ill have to sort out at a later date.
So i have decided to ditch stock rubbish and just go on with custom goodies. Could i receive recommendations on which rom to flash for keeping, as in it would have everything working that one might need without all the bloatware etc. , plus back-up utilities and all that i might need in case i flush my phone down the toilet or something, so i can have everything backed up and set up my back-up or new phone just the way i left this one(to the possible extent)
Also, a way to revert to my original rom, to be able to use KIES in case i want to sell it (S4 is on the way might as well upgrade). Now that i flashed the new rom i believe all the stuff in settings has no relation to my earlier rom which was unlocked italian or french one, as i am unsure.
Info from under the battery:
FCC ID: A3LGTI9300A
SSN: -I9300GSMH
RATED voltage battery etc.
S/N RV1C62ZKECR
how could i track down which rom i had originally?
sorry for the lengthy post.
Well, CyanogenMod is my favorite, and if you want to revert, just use Triangle Away
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=eu.chainfire.triangleaway
and flash stock rom via Odin or MobileOdin.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=eu.chainfire.mobileodin.pro
The rom backup can be made with Clockworkmod, and the rest (apps, contacts, etc) can be made with Titanium Backup.
(Not that they're not included in the CWM backup)
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.keramidas.TitaniumBackup
And there's no need to get the same version of ofw if you're going to sell the phone.

Ok so i stuffed cyanogen mod 9.1.0 and clockwork mod recovery 5.something, still couldn't figure out how to update with .img file i get from them.
looks wonderful, just one more thing, will clockwork in recovery using backup/restore backup everything as in contacts apps etc. and be able to restore when i update CM to later version?

Cwm makes it as a whole package, so use Titanium backup to backup contacts, apps, etc.
You don't have to necessarily wipe data if you're going to update to cm10 or 10.1.

So eerything is working jolly good thanks guys, but i still got a few issues
Most importantly wifi tether isn't working... i did find a few posts, but failed to find a solution as updating from 9.0.1 cyanogen didn't seem to fix it to others and is reported with nighties of 10.whatever versions... 3rd party tether apps don't work either it seems.
Also wifi signal seems to be quite a LOT weaker than in stock samsung rom, (phone sitting right next to my laptop, on which im sharing wifi, getting 2-3 bars out of 4. can't even get wifi at home if I'm in the next room, where my lappy gets 4-5/5 bars... again wifi i use quite a lot.
on the other hand customization is amazing i shall go try nighties, maybe they will have those features working properly... Maybe someone could suggest some other roms which work well with S3?
EDIT: updated to latest nightie release everything works like a dream, wifi signal is back to normal, tethering works a dream(quicker setup than stock rom, as stock would display SSID but would take a while until i could connect to it to get internets) CWM updated too, in 9.1.0 it wouldn't ask for SU permissions thus wouldn't flash a new version.
Interesting how nightie seems to be working smoother and better than an older stable version too. Anyways now just need to go donate good people some money for beers, they deserve a few
Hey there,
I have a factory unlocked Samsung Galaxy SIII, international, GT-I9300, freshly rooted and using CWM-based recovery v5.5.0.4::CF - v1.5.
Today I've flashed 2 custom ROMs, one after the other, by following some guides that I've found (cannot post yet links):
1. Android 4.3 via SuperNexus: URL hidden
and after the SuperNexus this one:
2. Android 4.3 via ParanoidAndroid 3.97 ROM: URL hidden
Managed to flash these two successfully, but with both of them I've faced the same problem during initial device setup: could not connect to my Wi-Fi network. Wi-Fi signal was strange too: strong, then suddenly weak. Could not authenticate and connect. :crying:
So, fortunately, made a backup before these two ROM flashes, so I guess I'm back with my stock Samsung TouchWizzy ROM (Android 4.1.2). That I hate. I want something bloatware free, stock-android feel, something like my Nexus 7 tablet.
Can you suggest me a "Wi-Fi capable" stock-like Android 4.3 custom ROM or am I missing something? Maybe a Radio flash (have no idea what's that) but maybe that what I was missing? And if I do that somehow, is that reversible? Never done it before.
Thank you in advance for any help and suggestion! :good:
love,
sz
Im using CM 10.2 (4.3)and i dot have any problem whith wifi. I used before PacMan Rom and the same, no problem. Just try a full wipe. And try it again.

(1) did you do a full wipe including manual wipes of /system? If not do so and try again (mega wipe can be of help here)
(2) if this doesn't work, did you play around with custom kernels? (wifi is connected to the kernel and less to the baseband/modem used)
I am running SlimBean 4.3 (beta5) without any WiFi issues, also all other roms before that, no issue.
This must be a modem issue as android 4.3 does not change the modem from the previous samsung rom.
try upgrading to latest samsung 4.1.2 and then install android 4.3.
install 4.3 after doing a mega wipe.
remember to backup everything.
and dont forget to take an efs backup as many ppl are facing major problems after upgrading to latest samsung roms.
Guys, Thank you all, trying to reply to everyone:

1. Thanks, will do a mega-wipe next time, although with CWM did these in the following order: Wipe data/Factory reset, Wipe Cache Partition, Wipe Dalvik Cache several times. Also, with MegaWipe wiping Preload partitions does what exactly? Just don't want to brick my phone/do something irreversible, as I try to understand everything I do to it
2. No, did not played around with custom kernels. Do not know how to change/flash them. Same as flashing a custom rom? Newbie here

(1) The best would be to read the mega wipe thread. I use it all the time, it will delete ANYTHING excep the external SD card (also not EFS etc, hence dont worry). Therefore you need a flashable rom on the external sd or via Odin later on. But basically your phone won't start after a mega wipe, just download & recovery will work.
Your wipes are correct I think, whereas /system is missing wich is needed, at least for SlimBean (4.3).
(2) The best would be to read the guides & kernel thread's how-to's first. It is basically the same as flashing a rom, yes.

Well if u r a newbie. Read all the guides available here. Dont proceed further without doing that. You will learn how to backup efs and all.
U can install any latest custom samsung rom. Again.. Read the guides/warnings before proceeding.
Misleading title .
#There have been a number of identical posts and some have fixed by copying older WiFi files over . But you need to search and read and no i don't know where they are . .
Its not a custom rom problem but a non Samsung custom rom problem on 4.3 .

Yes, reading the guides, so first of all decided to backup my EFS (coz that sounds reassuring before doing more ROM flashes) with EFS Professional from this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1308546
Installed BusyBox on my phone, and I'm stuck because of a missing applet: http://cl.ly/image/1a1J1A0I3V0H.
I think I'm going deeper than what I can handle
BTW, Enea307, tried CM 10.2 (4.3) this morming, and same wi-fi problem. So it's most likely not a custom rom issue, as most of you suggested.
The only logical; way to rule out firmware is by wiping the phone and flashing stock rom .

Some roms, mostly PA (paranoid android) just happen to have wifi probs.
I used to have pacman rom earlier and as it was a combination of cyanogen mod, paranoid android, and AOSP roms. It had a part of all three in it, so the wifi bug persisted. Went back to stock rom later.
Usually stock roms are the best and most stable for your phone, No matter how much the hype is, features are, or however big Nd bold letters STABLE is written in. Just delete the bloatware given by samsung to get ur phone clean and ram light. You can delete system apps by using titanium backup.

Thing is, that I am rooted, done with Odin, by following this guide: http://www.androidrooting.com/how-to-root-samsung-galaxy-s3-gt-i9300-or-gt-i9300t-cwm-recovery/
So I have CWM, and with I tried Android 4.3 via SuperNexus, Android 4.3 via ParanoidAndroid 3.97 ROM, then, lastly CM 10.2 (4.3). With none of them did I managed to get the Wifi going.
Here is my current "About device": https://www.dropbox.com/sc/8hp04dn5o5flytd/LpoJCgZ7sK
Is this stock samsung firmware? Coz I can't tell. It seems stock, but maybe it changed with the rooting procedure.
So I repeat, only with this setup/build does the wifi work. With no other custom rom does...
I did backup and recovery to my current working wifi rom. That's how I recovered after trying these custom roms mentioned before.
Guys, help me pls, with at least flashing to the stock samsung rom with Odin or Kies (Odin failed, scroll up see my recent posts with screenshots)
Note that on my last try, Odin just froze yet again: http://cl.ly/image/0o0o0k2L3J3m
If not with Odin, then how do I restore it to stock samsung rom with KIES?
thx!
You dont do it with kies. Kies is such bull**** software. Dont use it at all. You wanna backup, use TI(titanium backup) or nandroid backup. Take a system backup from CWM. As you said in your post, u want to go back to stock, dl the stock rom, do the same procedure u did to root your phone via odin (pda, etc etc), just this time instead of the root zip file, just put the stock rom zip file.
It should take some time, and aftet its done, your phone will be as good as new. To restore the backup via TI, dont select system apps. Only the apps which are in green font or downloaded apps. Other wise u will have force closes.
Also, when u flash the stock rom via odin from your pc, you will not have root. Just a note.
You can simply remove bloatware like live wallpapers, samsung "never gonna use" features like Svoice via TI by just uninstalling them, but note, if fiddling with system apps, them make sure u take a backup.
I have written it all in simple language so that you understand every essential part and have fun with your rooted phone.
Happy to help
As always last resort restore original firmware with Kies and probably a better method than some others posted.
