[Q] why my RAM is less than it should be? - Sony Ericsson Xperia Neo, Pro

Hi, I have a Neo V which is supposed to have 512 mb (actually around 490 mb) of RAM, but now it has only 322 mb RAM (not free RAM, whole of it). Is something wrong with my phone or its common?
How can I fix it?

Android takes a portion of the devices phones to do its thing.
Don't worry, it's normal!
Sent from the little guy

So it means that android itself uses about 150 mb of ram and makes it disappear, and again uses another 200 mb of ram and leaves only 100 mb of for user?
I don't think so, cause one of my friends has sensation xe, and his phone had about 980 mb ram, but once, after he took out the battery, it decreased to about 780 mb.
I think there must be a better explanation

There is memory reserved for android core, camera, video recorder,
Sound devices, radios etc.
The rest is used by the other user and system apps.
You shouldn't be worried about less free RAM unless you experience lag.
If android is using your ram it is doing so to ensure better battery and performance and it automatically clears up your ram if you are doing something which needs it.

my Neo V (ics) has 340 mb.
You can try galaxian kernel i think it gives more free ram...

Maybe, I'm not sure.
But why my friend's ram decreased?

I'm using GB right now.
Your whole ram is 340 mb, or free ram?
Also how much can you overclock with that kernel?
Sent from my MT11i using Tapatalk 2

The RAM can not be overclocked, only the CPU can be or other hardware components can be overclocked.
The RAM is occupied only with software applications or services.
As adity wrote you should not worry about occupied RAM if your phone don't have lag.

I don't want to overclock ram, I just want to know where it goes.
Also I need more ram to play the new NFS. Cause it just keeps getting out when it loads more than 4 cars!!!

You can see what applications and services are running on your RAM if you go on:
Settings -> Apps -> Running (you will see the list of running apps) and you can see what processes are in cache by pressing on the bottom: 'Show Cached Processes'
Now, after what you saw all the processes you can chose what to be close as unnecessary processes.
First, I recommend to close unused widgets and create instead shortcuts to settings.

Im still stuck at one of the levels and I can't get in, but anyways, thanks for comments.

Discrepancies between amount of free RAM

If I go into settings to check free ram, it reports roughly 140 MB free. Any widget that I use reports about 60 - 80 mb free. Why is there such a large difference? Which one is correct?

This. I would love to know the answer. Same exact thing for me...

Same thing, but sometimes the app will have more free ram then it actually does have.
I'm wondering if the system RAM number ignores processes cached in the RAM. So perhaps, in a way, they are both correct.

In gingerbread, memory management is a bit better in how much is reclaimable. Just a random fact. To answer your question though, any task killer or widget is showing how much is purely FREE, meaning not being used by any process. The memory usage screen shows how much is free+how much is reclaimable in empty pages, old closed processes, etc.

ICS using too much RAM for stability. Back to GB roms?

Hey all, I'm on AOKP ICS 4.0.3 (I think). My vibrant is running low on memory like all the time, and it's running pretty slow and everything's force closing. I know there's a way to swap data/data onto a larger partition, but I don't want anything slower. Should I switch back to GB, or what?
Thanks!
try Team Passion Chimera or MIUI V4 works pretty well
Use ram booster since you can always clean your ram with a red/blue bar which is small but if you touch it, it will clean the ram. You can also use ram swapper which can make ram partitions as large as 2.5 gigs but the only thing that problems it is the bad English and German implemented.

So far I've found Slim ICS to be great on RAM usage. I haven't tried Chimera but I hear good things about it too. You can also try using a program like Autostarts or AutoKiller Memory to fine-tune what apps are running and how much RAM your system will try to keep free.
Super Manager has a built in memory cleanup. You can set the RAM limit to whatever you desire and it will auto-kill tasks and free up RAM when it hits your set limit.
Been using it for a year, since CM7 gingerbread

CM 10 - RAM usage

Hello,
I would like to discuss and ask why the newest rom from cyanogenmod team, cm10, is using a lot of RAM om the galaxy s2.
By a lot, I mean buckets of RAM. If you look at your app management settings you will see that it uses up to 630+ of MegaBytes!! And the phone itself only has about 1 GB of it. Because of this heavy usage of the memory the phone gets laggy, the smoothness of the whole system is terrorized by this heavily usage of RAM memory.
The only option is to reset the phone and then the usage goes back to normal again.
Could someone explain why this is?

There memory leak in CM10. it's a known bug, that's why it's still in beta.
The only way you can fix this is:
1. by using a Ram manager
or
2. By using a patched services.jar for your ROM, made by Dorimanx
Hi,
I have the same RAM problems, i'll try the fixed services. Thanks

Samsung galaxy galaxy s3 the ram issues

Samsung galaxy s3 just has 779mb ram
When I open the up to applications like Facebook and whatsapp they run In background so the ram I have on average is 600-650mb/779 mb any solution?
And after clearing ram it goes upto 550mb (400mb using memory booster) but after 5 mins it's 600+mb
Any solution
And any one using polland official jelly bean. Rom please tell me your your average ram consumption

Whats the problem mate. There are still plenty of free ram. Like 150+ mb free. Android likes to not clean out everyrhimg evertime you leave a program. It makes it faster to reopen them. Its not a bug, its a feature.

No after my ram is 650mb + my home screen shut down so every time I press home button the home screen restarts
Takes about 5 secs to go to home screen
Sent from my GT-I9300 using xda premium
What firmware are you on? i think that home issue was fixed sometime ago..?
Android likes to use all the RAM available, it isn't your normal windows PC where FREE ram is better.. On Android, free RAM is wasted RAM.
Three things:
1.) Listen to these guys.
2.) Uninstall memory booster and other retarded, memory related apps.
3.) Search before posting.
That is all.

Update to XXDLIB Jelly Bean ROM. Use ODIN. You have 833 MB total RAM and the redraws issue is gone.
And yes, you need to search. Google is your best friend, you know.

Have no redraw at all... if your rooted think about removing kiesexe. If not turn off ripple effect that also helps

If you're under Windows (XP/7), you'll see in performance tab in task manager that most of your physical memory is not free, it's either used by programs or 'cache'.
Most of great operating systems do this, they cache something in free RAM so you'll take much less time opening a process. But in Android it doesn't show 'Available RAM' which is RAM that can be used for 'more process', it just show 'free RAM' whereas it's neither used by a process or cache.
Judge by the above sentences, free RAM is wasted RAM.
You are right but my home screen shuts down because other application. Takes more ram
And according to my task manager Facebook And chrome are most ram consuming Bo sum upto in 150+mb

The issue isn't because you are using more RAM, well kinda.
The system will close other apps to free RAM, the issue with the old stock firmwares, the Launcher can be removed by this and that causes the redraw.
Could be easily fixed.
RAM issue persistent
Galaxy S3 is my first Android smartphone. I jumped the boat [from iPhone] because I was blown away by my brother's S2. I spent nights playing with his phone when he got it (15 months ago). But boy Galaxy S3 got serious problem, with RAM. I don't buy "free RAM is wasted RAM". Apps don't stay in background, launcher redraws, phone gets sluggish, notification shade takes multiple seconds to respond to pull-down. iPhone didn't had any of these problems. Heck S2 don't have any of these problems. There's something seriously wrong with Galaxy S3's RAM management. I'm running 4.2.1 official Samsung firmware, its worse than ever. I really hope they improve the architecture on Galaxy S4. Other than that, and horrible battery life, the things this phone does is incredible. But its getting pretty annoying now, to constantly reboot the phone to clear the RAM.

Won't really care if you don't believe in science. If you're really desperate to free RAM, disable some system apps you don't use. Android manufacturers do have a tendency to overload their phones with too many features no one needs.

why not just go to recent apps>task manager>ram>clear memory?
sent from where i'm at.
I used to have the redraw problem with all my launchers.
Rooted my s3, put V6 supercharger script to work, it does wonders!
No more redraw (I mean really, 0 redraws in 1 month, heavy ram usage!)
Try it!

To be honest, I don't know why you're using such such (I'll put it as nice as possible) bad... app. Every Facebook for Android user knows that the app's no good. I suggest you get a different one (I've forgotten the app they mentioned in the portal post.. :silly
There's no coming around the fact that you've "only" got ca. 700MB free RAM at any one time. Especially if you're using stock Sammy ROMs. You have to think about all the features they implemented, and especially their heavily bloated T-Wiz interface. I mean, it's really nice and all that, but it just nerfs the actual potential of the hardware. I suggest getting a custom ROM and/or a custom kernel. (And Chainfire's Trangle Away app)
Hope I could help!

Remove all bloatware apps... Task killers and anti virus programs...
There is no need to clean RAM
Android manages it by itself...
And
Free RAM is RAM wasted.
what do you mean bloatware apps?

You can use a memory management app like AutoKiller Memory Optimizer (your phone must be rooted). I use the Pro version in aggressive mode and it is great (40-60 MB before, 100-120 MB after). You can also use SystemCleanup (free) to remove system bloatware (app suggests what can be removed).

Lol... You seem new here... The more RAM your phone uses out of total... The more smooth it will be...
So free RAM is always wasted RAM
and to kill apps... Just swipe them after long prrssing home button...
Don't use app killer as they themselves hog up RAM
