So Basically I was wondering if we could get a sticky, updated thread/bulletin board type deal that tells us "the ota update and you"
I personally am on the stock rom provided when we first got everything up and running and unlocked for the verizon version of the Note 2. I have the multiwindow fix going so I have access to all applications, I am also rooted and have google wallet up and running, Not particularly Interested in using a custom rom or unlocking the boot loader at this time. But I want to deal with the ota instead of waiting for it to bite me in the ass. What precautions and things should I do to retain root/multiwindow/google wallet with the least amount of redoing everything all over again?
Thanks Again for all the help
Just use titanium backup and freeze sdm1.0 and you don't have to worry about the ota

this!
Thanks, I will do so, but isnt it useful to have the modem details from the ota? I know as updates go it was pretty much just a trial at locking the device back down

Hello all,
Just had a quick question. I didn't know what search terms to use to get an accurate answer, since the search seems to pick up any and everything related to any of your search terms. I was wondering what exactly prevents an OTA update from taking. Is it the recovery that is installed? Is it having root? It's been a while since I have accepted an OTA for a device, outside of the Nexus on launch day. I have my Razr Maxx rooted, no custom rom. I tried a few of the ICS leaks but they were in safestrap, my non safe partition remains only rooted. When the OTA actually hits should I be able to accept it fine or will I need to go back to completely stock unrooted?
Things that prevent an OTA: ROMS, Bloatware frozen/uninstalled, custom recoveries (safestrap, bootstrap) so yes, when you want the OTA you'll need to fastboot back to complete stock for it to work. Root won't stop an OTA but OTA's generally break root.
You can try just uninstalling safestrap but I've read cases where just uninstalling it doesn't work and you need to fastboot back to stock.
everything wrong with motorola and Android has to do with idiot upper middle management execs having endless powerpoint presentations babbling corporate gibberish so they can make the next payment on their overpriced overlarge joke of a house and BMW. we are left to sort out the steaming pile of ****. i pray google has the sense to fire every last one of them and give their salaries and bonuses to the engineers!
Freezing bloatware has never prevented me from getting and OTA. Custom ROM and bloatware removal has/will.

What is the difference between freezing and removal, from a technical standpoint? I rooted my Razr using CASUAL and then installed Titanium Backup Pro and have been zapping the Verizon bloatware. I do want the stock ICS when it comes out. I guess I could reinstall the bloatware from backup and then freeze it rather than uninstalling. I don't care so much if the OTA doesn't install, I can troubleshoot that, but I don't want the OTA to brick my phone, that's the main concern.
The main reason I don't want the bloatware on there is that I don't want there to be any danger of clicking on anything that will make my monthly bill go up. Sometimes I let my girlfriend or other people use my Razr and if they manage to get a $10 monthly charge on my bill because they just had to see NFL Mobile or something similar, I'm gonna be pissed
I'm fairly sure it just changes the extension to .apk.bak, but I could be wrong
So, I have bloatware frozen, but none uninstalled. If ICS /is/ released on the 12th for the Verizon RAZR, I should be able to get it OTA?
Rooted, stock 2.3.6

Yes, at worst case scenario: You might have to unfreeze everything, Install OTA RootKeeper, use OTA RootKeeper to a> Backup your root and B> Temporarily unroot your device.
On the last OTA that I received, I was not able to install the OTA until I ran the Temp Unroot from OTA RootKeeper, then the OTA went smoothly after that.

Apps in preinstall folder are required by OTAs those are the real bloats. Any other system modification will be verified too, like build.prop, init.d CWM and so on..
Remember an OTA update is an incremental update wich will check any required system piece, especially those I've mentioned.
Cheers
OK. So I have the pull down button mod. Will this get in the way? I've not removed any bloat or yet (was waiting for updates). All I have is pull down mod and root.

Yes, it's a system modification. You'll need to flash stock rom to flash an OTA update.
When installing an OTA you can press both volume buttons at the same time to to see dialog, and if anything fails you will have filename and directory of failed checks. And it won't auto reboot until you tell it too. I found the problem files for the ics leak from early April leak and was able to install without wiping.

See I'm not fussed about wiping. Id quite happily have stock ICS and mod it from there. Looks like I'll be hacking some way or other to get the official anyhow as I'm on linux. Unless someone can point me to a UK suitable stock rom I can fast boot or add flash from linux. I have add setup if that helps. My system version is 167.26.

I don't understand them either, just don't make a big deal about it
Thanks for all the replies. I don't have any bloatware frozen and no system mods done so I guess once the OTA hits, as long as safestrap uninstalled smoothly, I should be good to go. Ill check out ota root keeper here shortly.

Can someone advise on the ota update.. I don't quite understand entirely boot loaders and such.. My note 2 is stock rooted. I don't think I will ever Change roms, but I want to stay rooted.
What is the verdict for someone like me? I do not want to block ota then miss other important updates, but I do not want to lose root either.
Please advise.
Again, sorry for such a basic question. I am still transistioning from iPhone world

Just block it. Sure devs will find a way to root and unlock again soon. At that point, you can restore the SDM 1.0 and get later updates if you need them.
You're sure to lose root within 5 days if you don't.
Ok, based on what you say you don't want to rom but you want root. That is where I am. There is an app called voodoo ota rootkeeper in the play store. It is free. Install it and use it to backup root. Take the update and use voodoo to restore root.
That will get you root and a locked bootloader. Which is where I read you want to be. But remember you may be stuck with a locked bootloader forever.
That said consider this. Pass on the update for now. You can always update to it later to get the next update. By waiting you keep your options open and miss nothing.

Thank you both for the quick replies. I think that is what I am going to do. Block it for now, using titanium. Then wait and see.
I am going to look in to that other program though. Right now I feel I will always want to reman stock-rooted, but who knows... No point in closing that door forever.
Just so I have this straight..... Using titanium I backed up the sdm 1.0 file, then in the same screen I click on it and choose delete? That's it? Thanks for being patient with me.

Yes, although I believe it's "Un-install", not delete. You could freeze it as well, if you have the paid for version.

I have a Note 2 that was rooted using a root-injected stock OS. Unfortunately, the OTA got me this morning and I have lost root. At the following link several folks have replied that they were able to get their Note 2's rooted after the OTA. What do you guys think? I don't want to brick my phone but I sure need Root-Explorer and Titanium Backup.

I can now confirm that, if you have a rooted, stock Note II and lose root through the OTA, you can go the Odin route with a rooted stock image and successfully root the device. Additionally, if you install Voodoo OTA Rootkeeper after rooting the device, you can then, do the OTA and restore root using the Voodoo app. Instructions and files are available at:

I can confirm that a handy dandy combination of:
1. Deferring the update
2. Rooting via ExynosAbuse
3. Backing up root via Voodoo OTA Rootkeeper
4. Updating
will maintain root with the latest Verizon Galaxy Note 2 update.

I did what you did and I am modified. I did the light sabre mod. But I don't think that would do it.
Edit......reboot and mine is back to normal.
I will buy N2 off contract by next week from bestbuy because I have buy back on my Galaxy Nexus and I like Geek Squad protection.
Anyway, my GN is rooted and has CM10.1 installed. What are your advices about first things to do with the N2??
I am not asking about accessories or covers...etc I am asking about rooting access, unlocking bootloader and OTA updates. Usually when I get new device, I like to use it as it comes from the manufacture for about couple of weeks. Then, I would do root, unlock bootloader, install recovery and try different ROMs for fun, but not a lot. Is there anyway to reject the OTA update permanent even though I don't have root on N2? So whenever I decide to install ROMs, I can do it. I hate to be unable to have unlock bootloader and root forever because of stupid update
Do not let the store update it. You turn it on, don't let them. Reject the update. Get it home and root it and freeze sdm 1.0
As long as the update hasn't been applied, rooting and unlocking the bootloader is a snap thanks to Adam Outler's process. Find that thread and follow the steps...there is even a video to walk you through it. 10 minutes and you will have TWRP custom recovery and can flash ROMs. For Verizon there are two primary daily drivers out there, Beans and clean. Both are touchwiz based so the s-pen works. There are some aosp roms out there in alpha, but I don't think s-pen works with them.

Can I just root it to freeze sdm 1.0 without unlock the bootloader? so that I unlock whenever I want to try different roms.
I guess this is more of a question then anything but any chance the radio update (that came with the new bootloader) will be required for continue functioning of the phone on verizon network? I.e, can you avoid updating hte radio indefinitely or do you have to manually apply that portion of the update ?

I just found the one click root called ExynosAbuse APK on xda. I am thinking to do it and then freeze sdm 1.0 in order to stop the update coming to my phone. Then, I will unlock the bootloader and try different roms whenever I get board with stock.
Yes
Just don't use that app to 'fix' the exploit. That seems to be causing people issues. The are two options in that app....root... And patch the exploit. Don't patch the exploit., just root it.
Bottom line is as long as you freeze sdm the worst you will have to do is flash back to stock. Which will be no problem since you didn't take the update.

I just received my Note 2 yesterday.. What is the release number for the new upgrade?
When the Samsung Galaxy Note 2 came out on Verizon I got it immediately and obtained root with odin, I think, it's been a while... Anyhow, a few months back the handset began downloading the OTA from Verizon, but it would never install, it would just fail every time. But now, because the OTA is trying to install, that stupid reminder pops up every single day (I always reset the time for the middle of the night so I dont have to deal with it during the day). That doesn't fix the problem, it just prolongs what really needs to be done, To get rid of it I think, I'm not 100% tho, but I think I would have to unroot, go back to stock, except the OTA, and then root again.
I am running with:
Android version 4.1.1
Build number JRO03C.I605VRALJB
Baseband version is I605VRALJB
I never unlocked the bootloader...
Based on that information, what would you say I should do 1st?
I read a lot of guides on this forum but it seems like everyone is rooted on newer versions than me. I don't want to screw things up so I thought I would ask the pros first.
Thanks for whatever help you can offer...
I would unlock, then Judy flash one of the zips of the new ota. Or if you're happy where you're at freeze the sdm app and the popup will go away

Sounds easy but it fails when I try and install the pit and bootloader...
If I am already rooted can I skip to casual?
It's because of these type of issues that I thought that going back to stock and re-rooting would be best, but to do that seems confusing and I don't know where to begin
Hello,
As a first time poster I would like to first thank the community here for all of the hard work done! It's an extremely informative website.
I successfully rooted my Verizon S4 using the simple exploit for VRUAME7. However, I then decided to permanently remove the bloatware on my phone. After realizing this was a bad idea I decided to flash the phone back to the original VRUAME7 build using the steps in this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2301259
The phone works great but I noticed that some of the apps are still missing. I think what may be contributing to this is another stupid decision I made: I tried to download the bloatware with the Play store before I flashed the phone. They obviously aren't too important but what I'm worried about is what may happen when I download the next OTA update. I don't think I will be rooting my phone again so I would like to leave it as is and receive future OTA updates. However, I'm concerned that it may break the OS if some of the apps are missing. Again, the phone works fine now and it doesn't show "Custom" on boot but I'm worried what may happen later down the road with future updates.
Am I safe or should I use a complete factory restore flash and wipe the entire phone?
Thanks!
The rom you odined is a no wipe rom. That is why it did not install all of apps. If you want it to be totally stock use this one.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=43420116
Whether or not you do it now is entirely up to you. It might be quite some time before there is another update. If everything you want is working fine now, it wouldn't hurt anything to wait until there is an update.

Thanks! So that pretty much confirms that downloading the OTA update will screw up my current OS. I'll flash the device using the rom you linked. Thanks again for the confirmation!
EDIT: I flashed the phone using the rom you linked and everything works great! It works just like I did when I first purchased it. Thanks again!!
