since im new to android i would like to know some information from u guys
From what i have read since now i haven't understood the difference between cf-root and cf-auto-root. Is it possible someone to clarify some basic questions to me?
1) When do we use cf-root and when cf-auto-root?
2) Do they need custom recovery files installed ?
3) Which one is recommended under what circumstances ?
4) I have read something about flash counters. Which one of the two methods messes up with them ?
5) I ve read something about locked boot loaders. Which one is not compatible with them and how can i determine if i have one on a stock non-rooted phone ?
BTW i own a galaxy s3 (GT-i9300 & Android version of 4.1.2)
I know its a lot of questions im throwing here but i would appreciate any help that i could get.
Thank you.

1) When do we use cf-root and when cf-auto-root?
=> If I remember well, the difference is the included/excluded custom recovery, hence if you want a customer recovery use cf-root, if you want to keep your stock one, use cf-auto-root
2) Do they need custom recovery files installed ?
=> see 1)
3) Which one is recommended under what circumstances ?
=> see 1) depends on what you like

see my asnwers to 1 - 3) above in the quote, for 4 & 5 I am not 100% sure, hence I do not want to give you advice there but the forum got a lot of people that know that stuff for sure
4) both
5) in general, you do not have locked bootloaders in I9300.
additionally, I'd not recommend you to flash anything which does not contain SDS fix. Effectively, as Chainfire abandoned some parts of the project, and as recovery includes kernel - I'd not flash CFrecovery now, but I'd look for something newer.

Same tool different applications and cfroot includes CWM recovery .

ok guys thanks for the helpful information.
If i use the cf-auto-root method which does not install a custom recovery file because i want to install the one i want, should i install first the recovery and then the root or the other way round?

Hello xda. I'm about to root my SGS2 with this thread. If there is a better method, please let me know.
What I would like to know is how can I backup the original ROM my phone came with? In case I don't like a ROM I try in the future, I would like to restore it with Odin. Are the files available here or can I do it myself?
Android version : 2.3.3
Baseband version : I9100MUGKG2
Kernel version : [email protected] #2
Build number : GINGERBREAD.UGKG2
Thanks for helping!

Yes, that thread is the best choice of root IMO.
Just pick the proper kernel matching to your firmware and you're pretty much set.

For one, if you root using CF-Root you also get the CWM recovery.
Boot into recovery mode (vol-up + home + power) and you get options to backup and restore you current FW/ROM and data.
With this you can always directely revert back to the backedup state.
Then again, there is also Intratech's amazing thread of stock FWs / ROMs.
It's likely you find your original stock ROM in there, that you can flash with Odin to a clean install.
And which zip file should I take?
We really need a root guide / flashing guide for newbies.
I switched from the milestone and rooting / flashing seems a bit confusing with the custom kernels and all that.
My milestone had a locked bootloader so i never was introduced to flashing kernels ><

Go to Settings -> About Phone, scroll all the way down and look for "Kernel Version".
You'll find something XXKE7 or XXKG2 or similar there.
THAT is build of the CF-Root kernel you need.

Hmm.... there's usually have pretty detailed instructions in the threads and there's also howtos/guides/faqs floating around....
What exately is it you feel is missing from those, i.e. what should be (in more detail) covered in such a howto thread?
the stock rom (ugkg2) for bell/virgin in canada is no where to b found now, i dont think u can un-root once u root
If your'e totally feeling unsure about how to root even after you read about the threads. You can watch rooting videos. I believe there is one in Italian (dunnno how that helps, but hey ) in the thread named:
[ROM + Guide]Official i9100 KE7/KE8/KF1/KF3/KF4/KF3/KG1/KG2 download and Root Guide.
It's under the Original Android Development forums.
I would skip step 10 though if you want to keep CWM. Also, search youtube for root videos. I recommend watching Mobiletechvideos, Samjpelle, or thecooloser. They're pretty fun to watch and they provide lots of tutorials. Hope this helps/
Hello guys, its best forum ever, I'm very glad to be part of that great community(even, if i'm noob ;/)
But, anyway, here is the thing, I have Galaxy S2 and sucessfully rooted it through doomlord program, then i've installed CF-ROOT v5.0(because, i wanted install Clockwork recovery), so now I just want to go back to official firmware, because i wanna getting updates through KIES, its much easier for me.
And here's some questions:
1. Does root will disappear after flashing official stock rom in order to fix "unknown device error in KIES'
2. Does Clockwork recovery will disappear after that
3. What firmware i should download if i'm living at russia?
Thanks for answers guys, sorry if it was already discussed, i just dont have much time to fix it.
1. Yes, as cf kernal will be over written by the official kernal.
2. yes but you can install cwm seperately.
3. check russian android forums for the best recommendations.

Thanks for your answers, mate, really helpful, so I think that I should stay with custom rom, because root is so awesome
Ok...Yep im a newbie and yep ive looked in the forums but im getting confused..
Phone :Samsung Galaxy s2 i9100 running 4,0.4 kernal version XWLPT.
Ive rooted the phone using the method 1 on this guide.. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1746794
Now im looking to install cyanogenmod but i dont want a bricked phone so was wondering if anyone cleverer then me can give me a quick guide of how to install as all of the guides are getting confusing lol
Cheers for you help in advance...
Now that you have rooted your phone, you can install CWM. CWM (short for ClockworkMod) is a custom recovery menu which allows you to install any custom ROM packaged as a zip file. Refer to part 2 in the tutorial you followed to install CWM. I'd also flash another kernel such as Siyah (thanks to gokhanmoral) to make sure you can't brick your phone. That stock kernel you have is dangerous and you must get rid of it before doing the data wipe required to install CM.
Once you've done that, grab a CyanogenMod build and install it from the CWM recovery. You should of course place the zip file on your internal storage first. Make sure to follow the instructions here.
By the way, there's a "Q&A" section for this device, so please try to ask your questions there, they should get answered faster and by more people if you do that.
Cheers tydem..i thought the kernel in mine was prone to bricking...ill flash the one that you recommeded and see how it goes
just to add to that.. do we have to update Modems as well? can we update them?
No.

I am using a Samsung Galaxy S3 i9300 which is rooted from CF-Root 6.4 (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1695238) and I have some questions before I flash my first custom ROM. I have researched these questions on Google, YouTube and through all these threads and I cannot find any answers. Therefore any help on these would be much appreciated.
1) Do I need to update my CWM Recovery to the newest version before I flash Jellybam 8.3.0? (P.S. the CF-Root thread states "Not compatible with ROM Manager ! Use the CWM Manager provided instead (installed by CF-Root automatically)" I assume this means I cannot update CWM Recovery through ROM Manager.
2) Will flashing this ROM remove my root privileges? Will I have to re-root through Odin again?
3) Do I have to use Triangle Away if I manage to successfully flash Jellybam ROM? This is because I heard resetting your flash counter is dangerous.
4) Do I need to have BusyBox installed? Tried to research this and I do not understand what this does.
5) Are there any other precautions to take bearing in mind this is going to be my first flashing of a custom ROM?
Any help on these questions would be much, much appreciated. Sorry in advance if I've posted this in the wrong section or I've broke any other XDA rules. Also, apologies if you're offended by how much of a noob I am. Thanks.

1 please don't bother with rom manager but you need latest cwm anyway (or better yet, philz advanced cwm in my signature) to be sds safe
2 root is in the rom. When you flash a rom, the entire rom is replaced - root files included. However, custom roms are all rooted anyway so you'd be replacing the root with root.
Please note, jellybam discussion is banned on xda
3 its not really dangerous. It needs to be done before returning it to stock
4 many root apps use busybox to function. Most custom roms have busybox anyway
5 read, read, read. Read all the stickies and guides in general. Read them twice. Before doing anything you don't understand, search. If you can't find, ask. Its easier to teach knowledge than to fox broken phones

Thanks so much for this reply. Just need some clarification on some points if you don't mind.
1) How should I go about updating my CWM Recovery? What's the best and safest method?
2) What is SDS?
3) If it isn't an issue, could you tell me why Jellybam discussion is banned on XDA?
So grateful for this invaluable info. Thanks a lot!
1. Like rootSU allready suggested, use PhilZ Recovery. Visit http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2002953 and read the first and second post. These explain step by step how to do it.
2. SDS stands for Sudden Death Syndrom. For more information on this topic visit this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1993044
There you can also check if your phone could be affected.
3. Sorry bro, can't help you on that one since I don't know myself.
As for 3 jellybam, I didn't see it myself - but apparently the developer used the work of others without credit. I read, passing it as his own work. I wasn't here so I can't say anything more than that

Guys I know this is long but PLEASE don't freak out! I really need some advice from you experts on this! I hope you could spend your time reading everything here and give me some advices! Thanks!

Hello guys, since I'm not really a rooting expert (previously I rooted a motorola device), I would like to ask for some advices regarding rooting our S3 because I have only one phone and I can't afford to brick it.
1. So basically I'm referring to the guide here. However, that rooting guide is for Samsung Galaxy S3 on I9300XXUGNA7 Android 4.3 Jelly Bean, which is different from my build number (I've checked software update on my device over OTA and Kies3 but it says I have the latest firmware), will it works for my phone? Also in the guide it says to use odin3 v3.09, however in CF_auto_root page here it says to use odin3 v1.85, so which one is working for my device or which one is better?
2. Next I would like to ask is it necessary to install CWM recovery to replace the stock one? After searching around, I found that there are some people who installed CWM recovery even before rooting, is that even possible? So basically to install CMW recovery I think I will follow the steps here, is this working for my device?
3. Okay I know this is the dumbest question... but is there anything else I need to do after the above 2 steps (flashing kernel, modem etc.)?
Thank you very much for spending your time reading my post. I hope you can clear those doubts for me!

Flashing your phone in any way doesn't guarantee not bricking it, see this thread
Scroll down to the quoted section headed Quick Root from there
Download Odin
Download CF-AutoRoot for your phone
Read the link on rooting
It is really straight forward just read up on it but don't read too much into it a frighten yourself

Great that thread helps a lot! I cleared most of my doubts now, but one more question please, after rooting, I wished to install ported apps like S5 launcher and accuweather, and in order to install these I need to flash from recovery. Is it possible to flash this using stock recovery? Or I need to install custom recovery like CMW?
You can't install anything with stock recovery, you'll need a custom recovery.
Make sure you have a full nandroid and efs backup before you flash anything -ported apps can break the framework and produce bootloops.
Seriously though, all this information is available in the sticky or by searching -why do need people to write it all out for you?

Thanks for your information. I did search around and try to understand the things myself, but still there are some doubts remain, that's why I opened this thread hoping that someone can clear the doubts for me. This is my only phone and I really can't afford another (I'm from a low-income family), I just want to make sure everything is alright so that I don't mess up my device. Thanks for your understanding
If this is relevant for Samsung galaxy s3, I got this done the other day using Odin to unlock and root, ran the root app to confirm root. The ROM manager to found CWM recovery flash. So far all good, should take 5 mins in all but an hour in prep and homework.

Don't use rom manager, it can soft brick your phone.

Hello! I agree that it would be better NOT to use Rom Manager. Many users had problems because of it. The safest way, in my opinion, is to flash a custom kernel using Odin. For example, I had stock rom and used Odin to flash boeffla kernel (not advertising it, just saying what I did) because that kernel had both a .tar version and a .zip one. I downloaded the .tar version and flashed it with Odin by putting the .tar file in the PDA column. That's for root.
For recovery I'm using PhilZTouch and I love it. It supports both JB and KK roms and that is preety cool. Also it's full touch so I don't need to stress my hardware buttons. It's also available as .tar file so you can flash it with Odin just like the kernel.
That's how I'd recommend anyone to root and install a custom recovery on a Sammy phone because I believe it's the safest way. PS: before launching Odin make sure the phone is NOT connected to the PC and that Kies isn't running in the background (use Task Manager to check) Goodluck! !!:thumbup:

Wow, that's great. By saying unlock, do you mean unlock the bootloader? Wait, is the bootloader locked in our S3?

Currently struggling with deodexing/odexing the stock rom, after reading around I can differentiate between the odex and deodex rom, still digging on how to deodex a rom though (since I want to install some S5 mods). After searching around, it seems like titanium backup can do the deodexing/odexing just nice Gonna do some more preparation, hopefully I can have my device rooted by this week
You could flash PhilZ Recovery and make a nand backup of your rom. This way you'd have an emergency copy if something goes wrong or if you break something in the system. Just my thought
