My 8 year old daughter has a galaxy player 5.0. She decided to put a password on it to keep her 6 year old brother out of it. When he grabbed it this after noon to play on it he just kept putting numbers in and he locked it up. The problem is that the WiFi is off and she has to put in her gmail and password in order to turn it back one.
Is their a way to get the WiFi on without getting into the device? Or is there a way to do a factory reset without getting into the device?

Is it rooted? If not, does it have a physical home button or capacitive?
Basically, if it is rooted, then you can remove a passcode without destroying much/any data. If it isn't, or if removing the passcode doesn't work, or you're not worried about losing apps (note that media files, etc. on the "USB storage/Internal SD card" will be kept), then you can always reboot into recovery (hold volume up and power, or if it has a physical home button, home, volume up, and power) and use volume down and power to select factory reset.
Thank you very much. I had to do factory reset but at last she can use it again. Thank you very much for the help

It did not really need any WiFi that was just to verify the account user and password

Soo heres my setup:
Rom: Das BAMF 2.0-5
Radio: MR2
So I was using my phone just fine and then decided to restart it after doing abunch of updates to apps etc.
Then all of a sudden once it boots back up there is no lockscreen what so ever, so I cannot unlock my phone in order to use it, I didn't have the pattern/pin/password lockscreen just the basic slide to unlock one.
I can see the notification bar at the top of the screen but I am unable to pull it down due to the phone basically being locked... I also cannot turn off/restart the phone because I cannot get it unlocked..
I tried a battery pull or two and everytime I boot it up the same thing happens..
can you get into recovery? if so it may be a good idea to go to a backup. I have never heard of that issue before:S
you need a car dock to unlock it and change the lockscreen, what happened is the default wallpaper lockscreen vanished, or reinstall the rom over the top again,i have asked many times can never get an answer as to why or how to fix it any other way.

I have the bamf rom on my SD card, but I also have the stupid radio update on there so I cannot get to the recovery until I get home otherwise I could fix it..
But thank you for your help, hopefully that will fix it. How does the car dock work? I had a moto droid previously and that car dock had a magnet in it that would some how put the phone into car dock mode. What does the thunderbolt's do?
basically the same thing, you out it in the dock and it starts the car dock app, when you remove it the phone is unlocked, then go to tje settings customize and change the lock screen, you will see only five and should be six

Well I don't have a car dock, so I ended up flashing the bamf rom back over it and that did not help.. Just ended up doing a factory reset and re-flashing the rom again..
thank you for your help guys

I just had the lock screen issue. That sucked. I freaked for a bit, but I was able to save it in recovery. Now to get my phone back to the way I like it... x_x
Best thing is to change the lockscreen,it has happened to me on every th band so far most of the time right after a back up

how do you get menu to unlock
You can try reflashing in recovery,I used my car dock to unlock the phone then change to the weather lock screen

Having this issue too...hopefully someone can figure out what is causing it.
To get around it, I installed a new lockscreen from the android market website, did cache & dalvic wipe, then reboot. Not sure which of those actually fixed the issue, but I'll probably be re-flashing today anyway.
I have experienced the same bug on Liquid roms. I had to wipe/factory reset and reinstall everything.
Someone in the Liquid thread told me it was due to the underclock while idle being too low. Thoughts?
I tried the car dock to unlock and the phone did not unlock. The notification bar showed it was in car mode, but it did not unlock the phone. Any ideas besides reflashing?
Hey guy's I bought my evo 3d off craigslist it was working fine few hours later i start getting f/c when i try to set my notification tones, htc hub, sometimes camera app as well. now recently it's gotten worse? freezes to a black screen when i try to open the phones dial pad "lights on the buttom stay lit tho.. or when i open my app drawer it either freezes where it won't recover or randomly shuts off? does this about 5 - 8 times a day! plus with moderate use IE: lil web surfin on wifi, browsing market on a full charge the battery hits the 15% mark within 30-45 minutes? its flashed on metro pcs but it had this prob before it was flashed...
any ideas? is it possible to wipe out the entire phone and re-install the OS and UI etc.. does it need root access for that?
Go to settings/sd and phone storage. There is an option for factory data reset that should put the phone back to factory, and you may need to re flash to metro after
Otherwise, you can run an ruu

I did a factory reset before I had it flashed, is a factory reset the same thing as wiping out the OS and re-installing it?, kinda like a reformat for a pc?
i'm worried that it's not a software issue since i already factory reset.
No, but on every reboot, anything that factory reset doesn't touch is restored to factory anyways because of the s-on protection. Only other choice is to run the ruu

Any idea where I can find an ruu for my device? I was told I need a stock recovery image? sorry I am new to this any help pointing me in the right direction would help.
On my phone, but
I believe this is the link. Just plug your phone in to your pc and run it. This is for a phone without any updates installed, if it gives you a boot loader error you will need a newer one (they're in the dev section here)

at&t update blocked my atrix
I have at&t atrix but it's unlocked and I'm using it in Europe with my carrier.
Couple days ago I was notified that there is an update from att and that I should download, which I didn't do, but anyway phone downloaded package itself and it reminded me every hour that I should install it and no data will be lost. I did that finally last night but now I can't get it to work, there is android icon and ! sign on it and it has been there the whole night but will not turn on again. finally I took the battery out and than returned it, it started to work for one minute and than it showed -turning off, and android icon is now on the screen again???
Please help or advise!
If you press the up and down volume buttons when the icon appears, do you enter a menu?
Sent from my MB860 using XDA App
I'll give it a try and reply.....
well I took it to service center, they told me that they can enter in that menu, but they can root it again, but all data will be lost.... can I avoid loosing data???
If they just factory reset and reflash the rom, you shouldn't lose things like pictures and music, but you will lose app data including saved games and text messages.
Sent from my MB860 using XDA App
it's done, they charged me cca. 30$ but managed to save phonebook and photos, all else is lost. I can deal with that but I'm frustrated that this was caused by at&t update where I didn't have option to say no, just install now or install later. It also said that all data will be saved, which obviously was a lie. How can they do that, I didn't want this update at all.
This is very inconvenient for me, but than again it seems that no one cares!
Official update my as.......
Thank you for advice but this sucks!
In the last few days my phone has continuously been switching itself off or freezing and the only way to get it to work again is pulling the battery or resetting it. The phone is stock, running Android 4.1.2 with firmware I9300XXELLA.
I did notice the phone had switched itself off a few times before now, but now it has got to the point where its happening all the time. I've also noticed that when the phone is booting back up after the lock screen appears the message "Currently unable to download please try again later" is coming up (which I think is more than likely the problem, but when I do attempt to update the phone it says its up to date).
So far I've tried running without an SD card, clearing Touchwiz homes data and switching off auto updates but these have made no difference. If anyone can offer any help it'd be really appreciated as the last thing I want to do is exchange the phone as it can be a pain in the butt.
Tried factory reset? I would suggest flashing the same firmware using odin and see if that makes any difference beforehands.

I've only ever used kies so will have to investigate Odin.
Out of curiosity is there actually a manual way to check for updates through Kies, as I can't for the life of me see how too?
If there is an update, kies would show you the next firmware details below your current one I think.

Hi, I'm laso getting the same issue with I9300XXELLA via Kies.
I've reset, cleared the cache and cancelled any restores but still it happening.
I'm going to downgrade to an older version to see if it resolves this.
I had to do a factory reset in the end and that fixed the problem. Still a bit annoying though as it took me a day to get everything back to how it was and like an idiot I forgot to backup my SMS messages and call history even though I had an app installed that could do it (SMS backup+).
Recommend one from ritesh or something. Works like charm every time I used it so far

Fixed
I wanted to test before posting but I ended up installing 4.1.1 then updating to 4.1.2 without wiping. Very strange.
As an update to this thread the problem came back even after I did a factory reset. I didn't get the unable to download error message but I did keep getting the odd freeze. However after a day of doing it the problem weirdly stopped happening and now 'touch wood' is fine again.
I also wiped cache and reset my phone running stock 4.1.2 on O2. The freezing problem seems to have gone, it's been a couple of days now and no issues. I should say that the only thing I haven't put on yet is Flash, I have a feeling it might be problematic?

SDS SYMPTOMS --------- Solution : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2091045
Ironically I think the reason my phone was freezing the odd time after I factory reset it was because I didn't have flash installed. After I sideloaded it the phone hasn't had any more issues (this could be a coincidence though).
Ive just ran the eMMC checker that nhariamine linked to and it says that my chip is susceptible to sudden death (VTU00M, revision 0xf1) and is an insane chip.
Does Samsung's most recent firmware address this, an if not can I get them to replace my phone even if it doesn't die?
The second day after I did a factory reset my phone froze once too and it hasn't since then(about a week) I'm still afraid of installing flash. I use Dolphin browser and I can set the user agent to iPad which loads HTML5 versions of videos etc, obviously this only works on sites that have this possibility. I guess I'm trying to wean myself of flash for now.

Out of curiosity what does eMMC checker say about your phone when you run it?
That it's an insane chip lol I was basically preparing myself for my phone to die. Since wiping my phone it's only froze once in the last week. I still haven't installed flash.

Same problem here.
Uninstalled flash to see if it helps.

I have had this same issue for the past week and have just downloaded the eMMC checker and it seems I too have the phone that is susceptible to SDS.
I have noticed though that the phone only freezes when wifi is switched on though. I dont have any problems with wifi off. I downloaded lagfix from the playstore and ran that and it reduced the freezes from about 20 in a day to 3. I didnt realise wifi was the issue for me at that time though so it could be coincidental.
Updating Roms etc has not worked at all for me. If it keeps up for a few weeks i think i will need to change phones as its way too frustrating for a top tier phone to do this.
Same problem here
I've upgraded OTA few days ago... did a factory rest because the phone was slow... and yesterday the problem appeared out of no where!

Disabling "WiFi Power Save Mode" seems to solve it
1. Open up the Galaxy S3 phone dialer
2. Then dial *#0011#
3. Look for the “ServiceMode” screen and press the left menu button
4. Select “WiFi”
5. You should see that the “WiFi Power Save Mode” button is “ON” – now put it on “OFF”'
Re: Galaxy S 3 keeps freezing every 5 mins (50+ freezes a day)
I took this post from another thread, but it seems to be doing the trick for me too. Especially for those who are not rooted. Big thanks to linnuxxy

Nope from what I understand it's just like ME7... once you're on it there's no turning back. If I were you I'd Odin the stock MI1 image and do a factory reset to see if that helps.
Do a factory reset first then try odin. Just what I would do. Just seems a bit safer that way.
for me it's actually opposite.
on ME7 contacts app used to just lock up and force close with the update nothing. ZIP works just fine.
