[Q] Help Required - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello there!
First of all I am a complete noob when it comes to the Galaxy SII and pretty much know nothing about it apart from navigating my way around the device. Previously before I got the SII I successfully rooted and updated an LG Optimus One P500h to Android 4.1.2 via Clockwork Recovery and that went very smoothly however I managed to "Soft Brick" it as I forgot to perform a factory reset when flashing CM10 . I used a bit of common sense to fix this by reflashing CM after a factory reset and a dalvik cache wipe.
Anyway I recently purchased a Galaxy S2 because it seemed like a powerful phone with a large screen at a price that wouldn't put a heavy duty dent in my wallet. I had the intent of rooting the phone but soon discovered after I purchased it that the phone had a "superbrick" bug thanks to Chainfire's Got Brickbug? app. I've read quite a few posts on the forum regarding people's phones motherboard being burnt out when they performed a factory reset with CWM Recovery. I am very keen to root my phone and have an alternative to CWM Recovery installed so in the future I can flash CyanogenMod and not have any issues regarding the superbrick bug. Is there any "safe-ish" root method and recovery that won't cause the superbrick bug?.
Here are some specifications for my device that might prove useful:
[From Chainfires Got Brickbug? App]
eMMC chip:
Type: VYL00M
CID: 15010056594c30304d19b62b3054bf7b
Revision: 0x19
Verdict: DANGER! This eMMC chip is *KNOWN* to have the brick bug!
[From About phone]
Model number: GT-I9100T
Android version: 4.0.3
Baseband version: I9100TDOLP4
Kernel version: [email protected] #3
Build number: IML74K.DOLP7
Any links, posts etc will be greatly appreciated!.
Thank you very much for your time

Just flash siyah Kernel and you'll be safe from brick bug. You are on 4.0.3, that means you are off the hook as well (BrickBug only affects 4.0.4's stock kernel).
Learn more from your device.
Here you can find your model's Q&A. If you wanna root it, search the thread for the "root" word (or go to the last page).

So this means that I can use ClockworkMod Recovery and not run into any brickbug problems with factory reset?.

If you do so while on 4.0.3 or after you've replaced the stock kernel with a custom one (siyah, dorimanx, etc), yes.

You'd probably be slaughtered alive for posting this question. This is xda, mate. Search, read and try before posting questions. And even if you do have to post a question, find the correct thread for doing so.
Since you asked, look through this thread for all your rooting requirements. Me and probably a million others like you have read that and then managed to root their phones following the steps mentioned there.

Dont forget to thank the contributor.
Yours being 4.0.4 theres a problem with an EMMC bug bricking the phone. again, read the forums thoroughly before going ahead.
Just flash a pre-rooted kernel.
I guess there is a thread discussing about rooting.

-You are running stock 4.0.4 ROM which it's known to have brick bug on it's kernel.
-after rooting, DO NOT factory reset/data or restore any backup without changing your kernel to custom one. Siyah, Dorimanx, Dream, and Speedmod kernels are known to be safe.
-You must change your kernel after rooting. It's better to be safe than sorry

Swyped from my Samsung Galaxy SII
I have the same setup as you so I think you can look into my thread which i started yesterday and Jokesy took the time and answered all my questions there including linking to a guide (thank you Jokesy, fantastic). I did not use Odin, but i used CWM Recovery Touch.
After following Jokesy link i rooted my phone, i installed the latest siyah S2 kernel (no beta), i also installed Titanium backup and purchased the PRO key. After that i followed an external link of services and programs that i could safely freeze/delete.
It shall be said that i have been using SGS2 since last spring/summer and this was my first time modifying anything with the phone.
Here is my thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1841641
Frank
For simplest root just use method 1 from 1st guide in my signature. No CF-Root, no CWM needed. Just copy one file to external SD card and update from stock recovery.
- Thanks for the contributions... - there's a lot to take in -
- This 'Bricking Bug' is something of a concern... - so I'll be doing some more reading before I choose whether to proceed with rooting my SGS2 -
- Hopefully things will be simpler with the Nexus 7... -
- Understanding the various versions, terminology & methods etc. is giving me something of a head-ache today -
- But thanks again... -

different basband?
Hello devs,
I ran into a problem few hours ago and I am trying to work my way around and through it. I honestly did, I have already lost patience and feel like quitting life itself. I wiped my phone, installed a different BOOTLOADER, different MODEM, different CODE and different CSC. I did all this to install a new ROM, I didn't like the changes so I went for my backup and restored it. Everything was successful, except that the Baseband version hasn't changed at all.
What is a baseband? Does it matter if I installed a different one (it is supposed to be XXLPS-I9100)?
Thanks
Baseband and modem are pretty much the same thing mate. You don't need to have a particular one. If you find your signal isn't as good as it should/used to be, you can change your baseband at a later stage. It doesn't matter if you stick to the one you have. It won't spring up at night and chop your phone into two bits

[Q] Flashing CM9 & eMMC Brick Bug

Hello,
I've tried to search the forums/google for this, but am still left a bit confused.
I have been following the `Samsung Galaxy S II: Full Update Guide' on the CyanogenMod wiki, and have got as far as successfully installing ClockWork Recovery.
At this point i have been made aware of the eMMC brick bug, and have found out that i have an insane ship. How do i continue to safely flash my S2 to CM9.
Android version: 4.0.4

First install a custom kernel, like siyah or dorimanx either via Odin, or since you have CWM Recovery, you could use that too. Then you can safely flash CM9. Once you're off the stock kernel, the emmc bug wont affect you.
Download siyah v4.1.5 from here (note: v4.1.5 only.)
Use the tar version if you're installing via Odin, or the zip version if via CWM. Both are safe.
Good luck.
Thanks for your help
I installed the custom kernel (3.0.15-Siyah-s2-v4.1.5+), and then successfully installed CM9.

[Q] sgs2 - can't get root with cwm - newbie

Hello people
It's my first post here
I'm trying to get my sgs2 rooted.
I've been searching around forums quite a bit, but quickly got confused since I don't know what ROM I have, nor what brand is my phone (canadian, at&t, south african or whatever).
After looking around a bit I found out that I have an insane chip using the "eMMC Brickbug Check' app, which led me to find that the safest way to get root which is using the CWM from recovery mode without flashing kernel.
I tried it but when I get to clockwork mod everything gets stuck and the message "cant open /cache/recovery/log" pops all the time.
So I'm kind of stuck here, any help would be kindly appreciated.
My device info:
Model: GT-i9100

Yeah it will

[Q] Installing a Jelly Bean ROM on an unrooted ICS Galaxy S2 device

Hi everyone : )
I have an unrooted ICS galaxy s2 device and I wanted to install a Jelly Bean ROM similar to the stock. After a little bit of search I think SuperNexus 2.0 is a suitable one, however I'm open to other recommendations.
I did a little googling but I am still confused, as I am new to this whole process and I fear bricking my device.
My inquiry is: If you could provide me with detailed steps, or point me out to useful links that are targeting my problem and would show me how to carry out this operation, that'd be great : )
Device Info:
Device type: Samsung Galaxy S2
My model number is GT-I9100
I've updated my OS to Android 4.0.3 using Kies.
With kernel version: 3.0.15-I9100JPLPF-CL644992
Build number: IML74LJPLPF
Update:
gatsonw suggestion was right on the spot (Y)
The steps I carried out, for others who had my issue:
1. I rooted my device using Odin to flash Siyah v5 Kernel
2. As a precaution I downloaded Titanium backup and made a full backup
3. Also, I made a nandroid backup of the device as well and copied it to my PC
4. I downloaded SuperNexus ROM from the thread I already pointed out above + google apps for Jelly Bean and stored both of them on my internal SD card
5. I made a wipe/factory reset of the device from recovery mode
6. I installed the SuperNexus ROM then the Google Apps from the internal SD card, also through recovery mode
7. Rebooted my device and enjoyed the new ROM

Don't worry, follow the steps on that thread and you'll be alright.
The only thing you have to do is to root your device and flash CWM, your best choice is flashing siyah kernel (it'll get you rooted & you'll have CWM).
Where can you find siyah v5? gokhanmoral.com

[Q] S3 insane chip phone doing wierd things on 4.3

Hi Folks,
I just bought this secondhand lovely new looking S3 that was still in the box. I was ecstatic, but once I started to use it I realised it is a lemon. It does weird things. Drops calls, gets no reception with full bars showing, drops mic input, won't call, won't receive a call, sound sometimes goes garbled during call. I can't use it.
It is running Jelly bean 4.3. Full details below,
Model: GT-i9300
Android: 4.3
Baseband version: I9300XXUGNA8
Kernel version: 3.0.31-2454463
build no: JSS15J.19300XXUGNB6
getRIL: confirmed RIL/baseband matching
eMMC chip: VTU00M build: 09/2012 FwRev: 0xf1 - confirmed insane
What are my options here? While I could pension it off to the next unsuspecting consumer as was done to me I'm not going to lower myself to that. Is there anything I can do to get this phone working or am I better off just counting my losses and going back to HTC which I've always used and love? This is my first Samsung phone and I"m not impressed. Samsung should recall. Its disgusting and damaging to their image. Well I'm already wiping them from my list of products for life.
thanks

First thing to try is flash a stock rom with Odin look here for guides >> http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s3/general/samsung-galaxy-s3-sticky-roll-thread-t2344125 << if problems persist after flashing another stock rom then it is most likely a hardware problem....

Thanks for the reply. Won't flashing a ROM risk sudden death syndrome? My understanding of the insane ROM and SDS is that any reflashing could brick the phone immediately. Or maybe I'm not right on that one.

Lol no I have flashed 100s of times (Lost count I have flashed that many times) and I have insane chip..Only roms you should keep away from is 4.0.4 roms... To be honest I would keep on 4.3 roms because if you flash a rom below this you may run into efs issues which is a separate thing from sds.. Look on sammobile for a 4.3 rom to flash and follow the guides don't forget if you have a bootloop after flashing to factory reset your device.
