[Q] Lost Root Acces.....Please help! - Motorola Photon 4G

Over the last couple of days I've been playing around with the Complete Linux Installer app (free version from the market) and found that it wasn't working. After a lengthy support chat with with the developers of the app I figured out that I lost root access somehow, someway. I'm running Th3 Bill's CM 10 (4.1.2) dated 11-27-12. Superuser is obviously still installed as it's a built app for CM 10. Does anyone know how one would regain root access without reflashing and wiping everything? Call me lazy but I don't want to have to set everything back up the way I had it, just too tedious at this point and was hoping for a better, cleaner, easier solution. I do have a backup from about 2 months ago. If I restore from that ackup will that fix my root problem?

have you tried to reroot with the torpedo method?

I tried everything and ended up just doing a full wipe and reinstalling CM10.1. Wasn't as bad as I thought it would be as Google remembered all my Apps downloaded them automatically however to have to rest all the setting(if applicable) in each app. Beggars can't be choosers I guess right. What's done is done and I got it fixed nonetheless. Thanks for the suggestion though

[Q] Alien 4 suddenly unrooted?!?!

I've been using Alien 4 as my daily driver for a month or so now. Occasionally, I'll run a nandroid, and install something else to "try things out", but I always come back to Alien. Most recently, my SU access on my phone seems to have disabled itself. One day, I'm clicking alond nicely, using titanium for app backup, working with a bunch of other apps that require root, and suddenly, nothing with root works. I was prompted to update Superuser.apk from the market a few weeks ago (memory is a little fuzzy on exact timeline), but I'm thinking that has something to do with it. I have disabled / enabled debugging, attempted to reroot via the howto over at briefmobile, and have pretty much exhausted my googlefu. Has anyone run into this? Does anyone have any thoughts on how to get SU either downgraded, or reinstalled? Keep in mind that because I've lost root, using tools like root explorer or ADB are pretty limited. I wanted to post this over to the Alien Rom thread, but because I'm mostly a lurker, I'm apparently verboten from posting in Dev threads. Thanks for the help in advance.

have you tried using the preinstall method to re-root that eval- posted here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=15023022&postcount=2
Apparently I just needed to look one link further:

Pete's Motorola Root Tools method re-rooted my Atrix. On a side note though, it reinstalled the older version of superuser, which is behaving appropriately. My issues must have been related to the new version.....

Problems with root (some apps work, some not)

Hey guys, hate starting new threads, but this time I just had to. Here's the deal:
First I had a Galaxy Ace. I rooted it, and used root normally for a couple of months. Then something went bazzerk (don't know how to spell bazzerk xD), just as it is on my new Xperia neo. My root explorer works flawlessly and I'm able to mount my system r\o / r\w when ever I want and explore all sys files. BUT, my ROM toolbox, GO backup, etc. all apps that actualy "touch" system files (I mean change or retrieve the above), freeze when a command is given. I.e. I want to move an unmovable app to the sd card. The file IS moved, but the app freezes on "loading". GO backup: I restore a file, it's completely restored, but the app frezzes on 99% even though the job's done. Why is this happening, and is there a way to fix it?
Thank you all, and cheers
P.S. This problem sometimes just vanshies, but it's back a few days later.
P.P.S. I tried restarting, taking the battery out, restarting SU, and restarting the freezing apps, nothing erases the problem.
Have to you tried to factory reset in your phones settings?
If you´re rooted check the superuser app and loock at the log
what does superuser state?

No, I think that would fix it but then I'd have to set back everything on my phone, which I don't want

Superuser says everything's fine. I already mentioned I can see all my root files with no problem. But when another app tries the same, it freezes.

Installed, checked. Says it's rooted. I'm using Superuser and it's reporting no problems. Still freezes when an app changes something.
The thing is root works, I mean I can backup\restore app data, freeze apps, etc. but after the phone does this, the app freezes, even though it's done. A very strange problem. Is there anything I could have accidently made to brake it (exept disallowing an app from Superuser rights, I checked that three times; allways allowed) ?
I remember that i faced such problems a few weeks ago...
some root file explorers denied me the acces to the root files while i tried to change a bootanimation
root acces was granted but it didnt worked
afterwards i tried another root file explorer and it worked fine
why ?
i dont know but something went wrong with the first file browser
Try SuperSU v0.95

Thank you all, it so happened that this version of Superuser didn't quite well support these versions of apps. Just changed the ROM Toolbox to a newer version, and it works perfectly.
:good:
apparently not working after root
noob here, I did my first root today, and have only been an android user for 2 weeks after defecting from apple since the first iphone. I was a jailbreak veteran of idevices, but I got bored with the stale bread, so I spent my taxmas on a Samsung galaxy s4. Specifically wanting the i9500 version so it would be unlocked to use on net10. I followed the steps from website, and video on Odin. And it looked like it worked perfectly. It wasn't until I tried to my photo gallery app to look at some pictures, and it crashed and wouldn't load. I had the same issue with a business calendar issue app that wouldn't open. I tried clearing system cache on gallery app but no luck. I'm afraid I'm in over my own head now, and might want to restore and start from scratch. The first thing I did after rooting was a full Titanium backup. only things that I installed after root was xposed installer and an app within the installer called swipeback.
I would like to know if there is a fix for this, without having to break away from root? Or if I must, how do I know which stock file I need. I know it's i9500ubueMk1 but there's many different regions.. I bought from a best buy in Charlotte . If there isn't a simple fix to fix why my apps aren't working, then the root does more harm than good, and I wanna go back to normal.
Someone please walk me through this!!
thanks

incompatible apps on hd+

I really this tablet but the big dealbreaker for me at this point is some basic apps are not compatible or at least play store think it is. Is there any way around this?

Most of those that Play Store says are incompatible are not incompatible. It is just that the Nook HD/HD+ is not a device that should be accessing their site (it should be accessing B&N store). So just reading the characteristics of the device (screen size, density, and many other things), it does not know what to think, so it just says not compatible. Most of them will run. Just get them somewhere else, Amazon, 1mobile, sideloaded from other devices etc.
I only have found one app that would not run. Google Voice.

I already posted this yesterday here, Chrome_18_0_1026320.apk from apktop says it missing something after installing. Already read somewhere about an older version which should work, but I haven't figured out which is the most recent one which does work. I want to install the latest working version.
I used this method for "incompatible device apps":
Some apps showed incompatible device on Play Store so I downloaded and installed them on to a rooted Galaxy SII phone using the Temp Unroot function. Then back-upped with Titanium Backup and e-mailed it by Gmail. Then download it to my at that point rooted HD+ (2.0.4). Apps still didn't work because my HD+ was rooted, but worked after the 2.0.5 update, as my HD+ isn't rooted any more at the moment. I think this workaround still works for many apps. (Only the root was lost after the update, so the rest still is working like before).
So some testing needs to be done before you can say an app really is incompatible. Would be good maybe to make a list of some apps, not?
Another APK that does not work...
Also I have tried to install Subway Surfer from 1mobile, google play store, and downloaded apk. In all three instances it installs and gets to start screen which lasts about 5 seconds. Then screen flashes and goes back to home or launcher. Really wish I could figure this one out. Two Nook HD's for the kids and most wanted game does not work. :crying: Jay

That means it just will not run on your machine. Does the Play Store say anything about which versions of android it will run on? Stock is 4.0.4.

Yeah it says 2.3.3 or higher. Forgot to mention my HD has the GAPPS, unknown sources, etc.

You're using gapps in the 2.0.5 update, but are you rooted?
Leapinlar, that's what has me baffled. The nook has 4.0.4 android yet a simple app that only requires 2.3.3 android will not work. I am sure it's just a setting that it doesn't like but I have tried it on both HD 's with the same results My nooks are not rooted but used your zips for stock. All other apps have installed and worked thus far. Do you have any idea what the app may be hanging up on with the nook? Thx

Is he saying it is running because of losing root? You can test that by installing gapps without root. See my cwm thread to see how to get that.

Hi, I have Subway Surfers running fine on my Nook HD+, it's ver. 1.6.0 dated 2nd January 2013. I've had it running on Cm10 and now CM10.1 roms fine.
Guessing here but it does have the option for in app purchasing, maybe that's why it's not liking it on the stock Tom with Gapps side loaded? It's a free app so can upload the APK if you like? Pm me if needed

Hey I am thinking the issue may be that I am not fully rooted but rather did Leapinlar's stock zip flashes for unknown sources and such. Do you guys think using the universal root zip and flashing that may solve my issues? Also will running the universal root zip work now that I have already done the other GAPPS, Extras, Unknown Sources zip

Yes, the root can be added later with no problem. You notice he said that app worked on CM10, not stock. I doubt if root will help. But you can try and if you decide you want to remove root, I have a zip for that too.

I've managed to use ES File Explorer to backup a couple of apps that the Play Store listed as "incompatible."
Plants vs. Zombies comes up as incompatible and I can't get ES to back it up.
Real Racing 2 comes up as compatible, but when you launch it the first time it wants to install additional files. That secondary step fails.
Further, i can't get ES to back it up either.

Great, being able to add AND remove root is what I was looking for, might have missed that while reading here. That would work like a "temp unroot", just not by a single click in an app, but that wouldn't be a big problem. So maybe it's time to give CM10 a try now.
Indeed some apps suddenly do work when your device is not rooted, so they do a check. Because I had them installed while being rooted and lost root because of the 2.0.5 update I could notice that they worked afterwards. On the rooted Galaxy SII I used the "Temp unroot" option in SuperSU, so I could install about all apps, those that need root access and those which don't want root access to install, run or both.
I do believe I used Titanium Backup while "Temp unroot" was on, while you only can install Titanium Backup on a rooted device as far as I know. Need to check this once more, it wasn't my phone I used.
Playing with and without root might be needed to see if some apps do or don't work on the HD+. At least by this you can out-rule whether being rooted or not is causing the app not to install and/or work.

Anyone else tried to run Words with Friends from CM10 SD card? It installs OK from the Google Play store, but locks up after 1 or 2 turns. If not for this, I'd have very little reason to ever boot back into stock OS.

From the android log it would appear it's the ability of in-game billing causing the issue:
D/InAppBillingManager( 5896): AndroidBilling: No Billing Support Yet!
Not sure how to get around it but that seems to be the issue.

Text Messaging App Missing After Adding RAZR M Launcher(Circle Widgets)

i posted this over @ driodrzr.com i am hoping the more eyes see it someone can help me out,
I had this running fine on ICS. Upgraded to JB then while i was re installing all of the RAZR M Things i installed the Text Messaging App with out backing up the old one first. Now the App is missing in the dock. I used root explorer to go to system app and it is not there.I tried to install the app as a normal program but that did not work.I copied it over with RE and set permissions then installed but not go there also. i have not tried use adb not sure how to use that. I have been reading into it. I am lost i have tried everything i know how to do. Please help me out i am loosing my hair trying to figure out this issue. Thanks in advance. anyone have any questions about this jsut ask and i will give me more info.
Anyone with any ideas be JB on RAZR here.
I did the same thing messing with the Razr M stuff - should have never went after that carrot. Anyway, the only way I could fix it was to flash back to ICS (which does not boot), but you can get into recovery to do a factory reset, and then reapply the JB update. The only problem....you WILL lose root! But at least your phone will be 100% functional.
Thanks for telling me i will try that when a root comes out for JB. I have root now and i am using a 3rd party text app for now. Not ideal but it works

Accidentally deleted too many system apps

Hello, Thanks for all your help so far in rooting my Padfone X Mini. It's been incredibly useful in removing extra bloat and speeding up my device. Unfortunately I went just too far and deleted an app that I needed. I'm wondering if anyone can supply me with a copy of the APK for the ASUS Splendid app. It looks like the version I was using was 1.1.0.140618. I've tried some of the other downloads I've found of newer versions and they just crash every time I try to do anything. I rather liked the reading mode, but just wasn't paying attention when I got uninstall trigger happy.
Thanks in advance!

Tried installing it. Even copied it to /system/apps and installed from there. No matter what I do, it always crashes when I try to enable reading mode via the drop down quick settings.

You may just be best off using one of the ROM backups and starting over. I've learned to freeze an app first with titanium and then delete if no problems arise.
Well, I ended up just wiping it, installing a fresh factory ROM (since the stripped version had it missing as well) and re-removing the system app bloatware. I did it a little more carefully this time, using TB to freeze them first to check for problems. This time I'm good to go. Several apps already installed and more than a GB left. Finally this phone is usable.
