Hi,
I really want to get pure ics on my galaxy s II. Currently i'm on 2.3.4 gingerbread, unrooted.
I have asked a few questions about how to root my phone, and found a pretty straight forward tutorial, that users on xda have said is great to follow:

Rooting the phone appears to be pretty straight forward using the above tutorial, but finding the correct rom is what im not so sure about.
Users on xda have told me to use:
forum.xda developers.com/show....php?t=1075278 , to find a rom, specifically the ones just above ++++++ [Frankenstein Firmwares] +++++++
The only problem is, how do i know which one to use, i gather its going to be the 4.0.3 roms, but there are so many varients for different countries, which one is for me?
Does it matter which one i choose? Is there differences between them?

Hi, I'm not sure what other differences there are, but I know if you use the wrong countries Rom, the keyboard layout will be different to the one you are expecting, and as far as I know, there is no way of correcting this.
If you are going to use English as your main language then you can update to any rom as all the rooms support English primarily .
You can upgrade to the latest ics rom which is xwlp4, you can also find the matching cf root for the rom if you need root

Does that mean I would have to use another rooting method in order to use the new ics rom, or can I use the tutorial I posted previously?
Currently my kernel is XWKI4, and according to that tutorial I must find the insecure kernel that is closest to mine, what must be done differently?
Just flash any root kernel and your done. This will give root, su, super user, busy box and custom CWM Recovery for flashing, wiping, restore & backup etc.
Siyahkernel for example, can flash via Odin .tar or CWM recovery .zip

Are you saying I need to use another kernel for cfroot, which will be capable of booting the new ics rom
Kernels are specific to GB or ICS. Not interchangeable.

From there you can nandroid backup in cwm recovery and also backup and user apps and data with bavkup root apps such as; my backup root or titanium backup.
Then you can flash any custom ICS ROM of your choosing. Listening ROM is excellent with few bugs. It will come with a earlier version of siyahkernel, which has a few issues with wifi toggle, so suggest to flash the latest ICS kernel from the link I previously posted or from his thread here in XDA.

Edit; important to do a full system wipe when changing rom from a different Android base. Wipe system,data, cache,dalvik in cwm recovery.
Another method would be to factory reset, wipe cache in recovery and power off. Enter download mode (volume up+power) release only when on dl mode. Have lies drivers on PC,but shut down lies and use Odin to flash the .tar litening rom. Done

Alright this is my first post here..
I am a complete newbie as far android rooting and custom rom installation is concerned. I have been using Samsung galaxy ace's stock installation unrooted phone for about 6 months...after installing a few apps the phone has become sluggish..and battery drains out more quickly I can do a factory reset
but its not practical reinstalling apps again and again . I figured out custom rom is the way to go to unlock the potential of the phone but the chances of bricking my phone has stopped from taking the plunge.
I haven't yet found a recent how to root and install custom rom post for the galaxy ace S5830 ,the ones that are available are 8 -9 months old I believe a lot has changed since then
My current rom is gingerbread DDKQ6
In short this is what I want
1) Back-up the entire factory os( ie samsung touchwiz etc)..incase I screw up I can always go back.
2) root the phone
3) Install a stable and secure rom gingerbread or ics (even better) which is fast and doesn't lag after installing a few apps. without sacrificing any original features of the phone apart from touchwiz
4) a rom which has all google apps running (gmail,android market,placess,navigation ,search,youtube etc).. i noted the current ics roms for galaxy ace don't have the camera working.

Chances of bricking is very less. You can read the stickies in development section. All info given there. Nothing much has changed. So you can use the old posts without worry.
as you new better start with a stock custom Rom . try stocklite 6 or adrenaline Rom. you Will know what you were missing.

For flashing a rom, ALWAYS delete Dalvic cache, cache and factory reset. Remember those 3 and you can flash any rom you want. Delete these before installing the rom, then flash.
Some roms don't require you to delete one of those, but always do just for safety measures and to avoid future problems.

As other users told you you can follow other guides about galaxy ace (even 11 month old, not so much have changed (for example http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1034145).
Just two advices if it's your firs experience with ROMs and root (that I learned here, and "save" my smartphone til now! )
1) To avoid lag and memory limits you should try link2sd or a2sd when yo'ull root (google for them)
2) NEVER use ROM Manager (or the CWM apk pre-installed in some ROMs) to backup your phone/intall ROMs/MOD/etc (NEVER USE IT!) because it'll brick your Ace!

Dude.. your and my needs are the same.. even i want to get rid of the stock ROM and want to try custom ROM
but i m confused because of so many choices i am not able to decide the ROM
mostly i need
1) as much internal space available in phone
(this problem can be solved by S2E "not sure"
but the thread says it does " http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1477996 ")
2) a fast rOm. after all after all my search i have found AOSP.. by SLAID though its Beta but ppl have used it.. and everyone appreciating their work
as i have heard AOSP is the fastest ROM for android devices

So i`ll assume that you already rooted ok?
Download Clockworkmod recovery from dev section
Install it by going to recovery-apply update then choose the sip file
Reboot
Download AOSP rom
put in SD
reboot to recovery
wipe everything
install zip from SD
choose AOSP rom ok?
but AOKP is still under beta so I don`t really recommend it

no i havnt rooted the phone.. but i have read somewhere that it is must to root phone before installing custom rom.. so looking forward the app and method to root my device
another thing is i want take up my stock rom too.. i may shift to stock ROM if i m unable to handle custom..
so the backup of the stock ROM is to be taken before rooting orr after rooting?
Back up with cwm after rooting and after installing cwm. Still, the best way to return to stock is Samfirmware and flashing through Odin (u need a PC and the ace's controllers).
It's all in the forums, just don't rush to flashing stuff without an exit plan.

Another question if I want to flash to OMEGA 7.0 ROM can I just simply flash from my phone setup now : IMM76D.I9300XXALF6? Because ROM OMEGA 7.0 they use Based on XXALF5...Should I downgrade to XXALF5 then flash rom to OMEGA 7.0 or I can straight away flash base on my current setup?

Read and follow directions of the Rom you choose. Make sure you do backup first then,if you don't like it you can go back or flash another. Runs are pretty subjective and cater for a variety of tastes so hard to recommend one. Most want super fast with best battery life but there is a trade off

I'm still running ALE8 with Siyahkernel. Works great after a few customizations and tweaks applied as found here in the forum. Most ROM's have trade-off's (e.g. they want to slim it down and remove libraries or features I consider worth it)
You won't see a real performance difference between Samsung-based ROM's.
Actually you _WILL_ see a difference at the beginning since your phone is then again factory-new without lots and lots of apps and background services.

Why I can't paste Omega 7.0 ROM in my Internal SD Card?

Are there any custom roms which are better than the latest stock rom for the galaxy s2? I'm new to all this so this could be a stupid question.
I want to root my phone and maybe flash it with a custom rom. I have never upgraded the stock firmware on my phone because I did not want to lose the data in my apps and now I want to upgrade the phone and keep everything so I'm going to root the phone and use titanium back up. My android version is still 2.3.3.
Why do people flash an insecure kernal? (except for the reason of rooting the phone using odin)

Better or not is subjective. The only way for you to find out is to try it out yourself. Someone else's opinion of better probably won't match up with your opinion or mine.
However, most custom ROMs will require you to do a full wipe of your phone, which means you won't be able to fully preserve your data... so you'll have do stick with your plan of root first, and use TB to save your app data. You can then restore your app data after you install whatever ROM you want.
Insecure kernels are used to root, there's really no other reason for them to be flashed.
If you want to invest time in your phone and tweak it to the maximum, a custom rom / kernel is recommended. They often contain extended settings which can improve comfort and performance of your phone, but they also require some technical knowledge and carefulness.
If you are just happy with your stock roms functionality, there is no need to change.

I don't mind investing time, I want to tweak it to the maximum and be able to do anything I want. I was planning to just root it using super one click, backup my app data using titanium back up and then upgrade the stock firmware and then root it again so I can restore the app data again. As I am new to do this, I'm doing proper research so I don't do anything wrong. I might also flash a CM Rom to my phone if I understand how to. I don't understand the insecure kernel and how it is different from the stock kernel.

Yeah that's exactly what I'm going to do. Just thinking if I should root it using an insecure kernel or super one click.

So I root the S2, backup my apps, upgrade to ics using kies and then root again using CF-Root Kernel and restore apps.
Should I upgrade to ics using kies if I want a custom rom?

I just did this yesterday.
First root gingerbread.
Do a full nandroid backup.
Backup efs and apn using the guides on this forum.
Backup SMS using SMS backup.
Sync contacts to google or export to sd card as vcard.
Backup apps and data using titanium backup.
Copy all data off the phone onto your computer just in case.
Perform a factory reset.
download latest firmware from sammobile.com and flash onto phone.
Root using cf-root and use import or sync to retrieve contacts, SMS backup to restore SMS, and titanium backup to restore apps and their data.
At this point you should have a working phone with only call logs lost.
First couple of charges after a flash the battery will drain quickly but will settle down after that.
You just want to have rooted stock? You'll need to upgrade to ICS first before flashing a custom kernel.
What you could do, is upgrade to stock ICS through KIES flash a CF-Root then proceed from there.

Tried most ROMs and resurrection remix is probably the best all rounder,much smoother than stock but still not had a custom ROM or kernal beat stock on benchmarks.

If you are still on 2.3.3, I would recommend you to root it with zergrush method because it doesn't increase the binary counter.
Go to this link to download InitialCFRootFlasher.zip (from Chainfire), and then download CF-Root kernel of your firmware. Follow the instruction carefully and you S2 will get root with 0 binary count. This wouldn't work if you have updated your firmware to 2.3.6 above.
There are rooted stock ICS firmware which can be flash directly using CWM Recovery, so there's no need to use kies at all.
I would recommend Rootbox. There are two, one in jelly bean, and one in ics. Either one is really good.

I went through your thread but CF hasn't made an insecure kernel for KH2. A few users had the same problem and used KH3 as stated by CF but some ended up running into difficult problems and some had no problem. Should I use KH3 to root or should I use another method. I only want to root gingerbread so I can back up app data. I might then factory reset and update the stock rom or flash CM10.

I thought maybe its time to get me a new rom.
I come here and see al these new features : mali, vsync, aroma, dualboot .....
Isn't there a romguide or something? Because this all is getting very difficult.

There where lesser option which made it easier to choose. There where also fewer cooks for the SGS2 back then.
If anybody can help me a bit coming up to speed with al this new stuff, I would be very thankfull.

The stickies in the general section have guides to everything right from upgrading from GB to ICS and rooting,dual booting, flashing, etc.
Only thing missing there is details on the latest updates on cm10 and build 4. In brief, the roms based on these two will not run on earlier kernel versions..coz of the new Mali drivers you mentioned.
Aroma basically makes installing a ROM simpler with the help of a GUI. kinda like the installation wizard you have on windows PCs.
Have a look through the stickies (especially the one on the emmc brick bug) and if you have any questions..always happy to help as best I can.

Everything is pretty scattered even for people who are sort of on the lookout and have tried various newer ROMs.
Dualboot is a feature in custom kernels, at least Siyah that I know of, where you can have more than one ROM installed and choose at boot time which one to use. I gather that its mostly useful for people wanting to try the experimental builds of Jelly Bean and have a stable Ice Cream Sandwhich.
Aroma is an installer which is sort of a second step after a CWM flash, and before an install, and allows you to choose via checkboxes which extra options you might want. This is up to the ROM maker as for what selections you might have. Examples are sometimes which kernel, which Samsung apps that aren't included in the ROM, etc.
I don't know what mali and vsync are but I would guess that vsync has something to do with graphics and maybe with the experimental Jelly Bean builds.
The only really important thing I can thing of is, as always, to do a nandroid backup before starting anything and possibly since you have Gingerbread you might need an older Kernel on hand with older CWM for a recovery back to Gingerbread... This needs to be addressed by someone who can clarify and it might also be necisarry to flash a newer kernel and CWM that will allow you to enter a recovery mode that will be compatible with newer ROMs but I don't know if this is the case or not. Again, this needs to be addressed by someone more helpful.
More important than the above is that, since you've apparently been out of the loop for a while, there's been a bug that can render a hard brick on some devices depending on various hardware components and the version of CWM used for flashing. There's a sticky thread about this but the safest thing way to go about it, as I understand, is to just not flash a 4.04 ROM but use a 4.03 one. I've used both and prefered the options available in 4.03, for my needs, as far as mods go.
Also, as for Jkay's work, some ROMs incorporate that and some incorporate similar features but aren't near as feature rich. As with Gingerbread there's only so many ROMs that he's done the work for and it now requires not just flashing of a framework, as was in Gingerbread, but purchase of the app from Google Play that will allow you to customize the settings. As for theming, its easier to choose a ROM that has it done already and is compatable with Jkay's framwork (assuming you want those things). You can, use a stock ROM, theme it, install Jkay's framework and it will work quite well but its more work. Vertimus themes are very popular but the site navigation is confusing and will definately be daunting. It would be necissary to read first before making any changes (themes or tweaks) deviating from initial setup. The easiest thing is just to choose something, assuming you want it, already themed and tweaked for Jkay's app to work in advance. Wanam builds seem pretty popular for this and as for the hard brick bug possibility with CWM on 4.04 ROMs, you can probably follow the current Wanam build download into his site and find his forum, search for a 4.0.3 ROM (LPG has played best with my particular handset) and make sure its for the SGSII as people often build for more than one phone and it would be a shame to flash an SGSIII ROM (or something else) on accident, for example.
My recommendation, in summary, is not to worry about dual booting or those other things for the moment, do nandroid backup if you intend to upgrade, find out if you need to have older CWM to downgrade (a flashable one at that in case you get stuck at a boot loop) or a newer one to upgrade, then keep it simple and choose an already themed and Jkay tweaked (you'lle have to buy the app) ROM that isn't a 4.0.4 build of Android, but 4.0.3, and to stay with Samsung based ROMs as a starting point. From there you can get a feel for for things and decide if you like the theming or if you want flash something else with stock Touchwiz, if dual booting is worth the trouble, and then bother to read about the other things you mentioned that I wasn't able to answer... so basically, keep the upgrade simple and then go from there and quite frankly if that means a stock upgrade to unmodified Samsung firmware then so be it.
If I backup my rom, cant I just restore it without worrying about the kernel?

Another thing. Obviously all my apps run on gb. Will they run on ICS to? Especially the gameloft games?

it depends on the Kernel ma8 if its compatible with ur older rom then fine, else u will have issues in resotring the bkp

As far as I know, you can't restore a GB ROM on an ICS kernel and vice versa.

If they've been updated to run on ICS by the game devs..they will. You'd have yo check that out on the game's page. But since a factory reset is recommended when going from one android version to another you might not be able to save the app data..ie, current state of the game on GB and then resume on ICS.

If you want to restore you GB do that.
1.Flash GB stock Rom to your phone
2.Then search CWM recovery compatible to GB
3.If you found it flash it
4.then restore your backup

Ok I checked and have this file " CF_ROOT_5_0_CWM.zip" on my phone. I also have different kernels ony phone which work with my current rom. This is enough to get me back to GB2.3.6 ?
What would the proces steps be if I am on an ICS rom and want to go back to GB?

Yes.Do you have nandroid backup ? If yes. So you need to root it or use temporary cwm.
When you do that you can restore nandroid.
