I have an unrooted samsung s III, gt-i9300 which does not enter download mode. I do have recovery mode and the phone operates fine in normal mode. I thought I had a backup, but I was wrong. I tried to use cf-auto-root to root the device, thinking it would be easy, and I think download mode got overlaid in the process.
Without download mode, I find I cannot use ODIN to restore/install anything.
I also find that I cannot use Kies. When I use Kies, on a windows system, I seem to always get prompted for drivers. I thought all the samsung usb drivers were included with Kies.
full system reset gets rid of my user data, but did not restore download mode.
Can I use recovery mode to restore my system either to stock mode or to jelly bean? The phone is new and I don't have anything on it that I need to preserve.
Thanks!
There's no way the phone works and recovery work, but no download mode, you must be doing something wrong
You have to press Vol - + Home Button + Power Button untill the download mode appears (ca. 10sec).
instead of download, recovery menu with red triangle

First off, thanks for the speedy response!
Here is exactly what happens when I try that:
1) at around 6 seconds, I see a green android on its back, with a red triangle above his exposed inner
2) this will stay there until I hit the home key (all other keys are disabled)
3) when I hit the home key, I see the "Android system recovery <3e>" menu
If I try to do wipe data/factory reset or wipe cache partition, the problem remains.
I was able to get into download mode once, when I tried to install cf-auto-boot, but not since.
thanks again!
Pete

yup... not volume up. I tried that one too, because I thought I was going nuts.
When I do this:
1) power off
2) pull battery
3) insert battery
4) press and hold volume UP
5) press and hold home button
6) press and hold power
7) wait 5 seconds then release all 3
I see a hardward diagnostic screen showing "factory mode" in a blue background and a list of types of diagnostic tests (full test, item test, test report, clear eMMC, Version, Reboot).

I (incorrectly) thought that the clone was identical to the samsumg gt-i9300.
firmware is IMM76D.I9300ZSALE9
sounds like I need to start researching the firmware. THANKS!
no firmware from xda will work for you
Seems you got a mediatek clone.
Not only they will not run the official operating system including aftermarket ones like Cm (completely different hardware) but they are less powerful and have less interesting hardware than the real S3.
Additionally they don't tend to live very long and have lots of issues.

Surely you must have seen you didn`t get a Samsung box with the seals intact as well as the bootupscreen that should say GT-I9300. And off course the price you payed must have been quite a bit lower than the real S3.

Yes I am having the same issue, a friend of mine bought it online from a website for $ 180.00 and I rooted 3 tmo ones and they were very simple and easy.
The problem with this one is that the phone never get's to download mode not even with the jig.
When you hold Volume Down + Home + Power, it takes you to a different screen, I will try to upload a picture soon so that you guys can see what's going on.
Someone correct me if I'm wrong.
Here is more information on the device.
Model number: GT-i9300
Android version: 4.0.4
Baseband version: I9300XXLE8
Build number: IMM76D.I9300XXALE9
Custom Build Version: V3G.12.07.20
Thanks in advanced hope to hear from someone soon to see if they are able to assist us with this issue.
Here that's the screen we get when we hold volume down + home + power button.
Any ideas how to get this phone into download mode?
Thanks again.

Seems like some custom software has been installed on the fone that has overwritten what is supposed to be there. Someone more knowledgeable than me would have to tell you how to get
rid of it. It would help to know where the fone is from.
First question has to be is this the International I9300 phone or some other model .

You could try a usb jig to force into download mode. They're a couple of dollars / pounds whatever.

That seems a smart question I'm new to Samsung.
Download: Volume down, power on button and front button (home button) pushed in at the same time whilst the device is off to get into download. Result: I see the screen go on (screen is black but there's backlight) and after a couple of seconds it just boots the normal android system.
Recovery is volume up, power and home at the same time when the device is turned off. Same here, I see a response e.g. the backlight goes on but after a few seconds the phone boots up normally.
The booting proces takes longer than it normally does when just turning the device on. I think the software installed is causing this (the hardware seems to respond but it's like the software just ignores the input)

You can the following procedure, as described in many threads around here. You just need to do the following steps:
1: download stock firmware (you can find it at http://sammobile.com)
2: download Odin (i recommend v3.07, you can find with a search)
3: install usb drivers for your device
4: put your device in download mode (remove your battery and put back on the phone; after this power it up with power button + home button + volume DOWN; when your device vibrate, release the power button but keep the another 2 pressed)
5: confirm the warning on screen with volume UP
6: open Odin, click in PDA and select the downloaded firmware (you may need to unpack it first, because Odin expects a .tar or a .tar.md5 file)
7: plug your device in your computer; Odin must recognize your phone (a blue field will appear on screen)
8: uncheck only the auto-reboot and leave the another boxes as it is
9: click on start button and wait... it will take around 15 minutes
10: when "reset" appears on the screen, disconnect your device, remove the battery and put it again; after this, power up your phone normally and wait the boot. It should work as expected now.

If you're not sure what's wrong and if you don't mess around with your phone, that's the only way you got.

You screen was black even in download mode?
If not, you could try to flash CWM and do a factory reset in your device, and reflash the rom. But I think it's better to take your device to an authorized service center.

i hope its just a wiring problem, because if the problem is the screen, that means a lot of money ~

Perhaps a silly question, but was your phone definitely on 4.1.2 at the time?
Personally I prefer the root methods using Odin - you get a lot more feedback as to whether or not things are working.

Yes it was, but I did't notice that tutorial is for S2 I9100G, because mine is S2 I9100. By the way, is there a chance that usb jig could fix this? Because Im losing hope to start it manually..
You've flashed firmware for a different device, this is why your phone is dead. Take it to someone who does JTAG's, it may be JTAG'able. If a JTAG doesn't work replace motherboard - either a new one by Samsung service centre (expensive) or a 2nd hand one you source yourself & pay a local mobile repair shop to swap (cheaper).

Thank you! And what about usb jig, should I try it?
Of course, given they only cost a couple of bucks on eBay you don't have anything to lose. This might be the 1 in 10,000 where it works in this situation for whatever magical reason. But you do need to be realistic/manage your expectations & buy one expecting it won't work.
Since its dead/bricked, try what ever is neccessary to turn it on. Does the recovery mode work? If it does try to update/flash a stock official firmware for your phone. Do what ever is necessary or get ready to pay for some bucks at the local repair shop.

Is there any way to hard reset it? Trying to put it into Download Mode and/or Safe Mode the same exact thing happens.
When I turn the phone off and charge it thru AC, the battery icon comes on stating it is charging. Does Odin see it in tha moment so maybe I can flash it then? Like I said i cannot get into safe or download mode.
Im leaving the phone on and see if it will completely drain the battery and charge it up again from there.

Well, WhatsApp "self uninstalled" itself as when I tried to see it in the Applications list all that appeared is "com.whatsapp" so I went ahead and redownloaded from the Play Store. It complained about there being low disk space but it told me that it installed it successful. I tried to open it and it said that it had stopped working. So I went ahead and turned it off. And ever since that, I try turning it on and it stays like that.

Can you enter Recovery Mode? If yes, try doing Wipe data/ factory reset and Wipe cache partitions. See if it works. If not, then try using the following guide to force open Download Mode from odin. The guide is meant for Samsung Galaxy Ace S5830 and thus the key combination mentioned in the guide is different. Since you are using Galaxy Ace S5830i, make sure to hold Vol Up+ Vol Down+ Power to enter the Download Mode. Here is the link,

First of all, there is always a Recovery Mode in your phone. If you haven't installed any separate one's, then you will have the stock Recovery Mode. To enter it, hold on Vol Up + Home + Power button while switching on your phone. Pressing the Download Mode combo normally and pressing the Download Mode combo while your phone is connected to odin is an entirely different thing. Now you can also try the USB Jig but let me tell you its not always guaranteed to work. If USB Jig did work, then it will force open the Download Mode and you install the stock rom back using odin. If none of the above works, then its better to consult the Service Center as it could be a hardware problem.
