Hey guys,
Sorry I tried searching but the search seems to be broken at the moment and I didn't see anything after scrolling through many pages.
Recently I've started getting this message alot when I wake the phone. Is there a fix? It usually goes away as the phone sees the card once the screen is up but sometimes it says that the card is corrupted and needs formatting and I need to restart to get it back.
Any tips or fixes I'm not aware of?
Your card is dying. Back up your data from it. I got that message for about a week then the card was unrecognizable.
There are seveal threads from this and other forums about this very problem.

Are you using a Sandisk card? If yes that might be the problem. I have had 2 of them and they did the same thing. I just exchange it to PNY brand

DAmnit really? Yes I bought a brand new sandisk. Hopefully I can still return to Amazon! Thanks guys.
I agree with the other posters, sandisk cards are junk (& I have 3 sandisk 64 gig cards)
I have now had three sandisk cards burn up on me.
I still use them, but I back them up to my LT religiously.
Got it returned and have a samsung on the way! Thanks everyone!

It doesn't depend on your sd-card. I test it with several sd cards I have, no way.
It's a well known bug, with no fix at moment.
The only workaround - which is working for me - is to keep the wi-fi constantly enabled. Have a try. The sd-card won't unmount.
Else, error doesn't occur if there are not on the sd-card (incl. sd-ext partition) apk's which are running (i.e. widgets, whatsapp & etc).
If you find a fix, SHARE IT
Had the same issue with my S3.
Turned out that the SD card was dying, this caused it to be unmounted by itself and then mounted again (sometimes showing notification “sd card removed unexpectedly”), hence triggering the media scanning process.
I created an application to monitor how many times the SD card was removed, and turned out to be unmounted every ~3 mins!!!
I then bought a new Transcend 32GB Class 10 card (made in Korea), and until now, this never happens, no reports from the application whatsoever, and no media process eating my battery.
I just published this app in the play store now, this is the link:

really is Sandisk issue?i faced the same for my Sandisk 32gb class 10,but when using kingmax 32gb class 10 no such issue..if so should consider abt Samsung 32gb class 10 card soon..
I do not believe it's dependant upon the brand. I have the issue with a 32gb class 4 PNY. I notice the problem correlates to the wake lock delay. They may both be associated with the deep sleep issue.

Waiting for a fix? The is no fix other than buy a new SD card. This thread was resolved last year. Lol.
It seems some cards do not play well with this phone. I had this issue with a Lexar 32gb. I now have a sandisk 64gb with no issues.

Hi ,
My External SD card on galaxy s3 i9300 international version .... shows up on the notifation bar that Sd card removed unexpectedly.... this happens evry 10 mins or 15 mins....
Help appriciated
Have got the exact same issue and drains the battery quicker as it has to keep on rescanning the SD card...I have reformatted the card and it still doesn't help...did not have this issue until last week and don't know what happened for the SD card to keep on being removed every 10-15mins..I have realized that every time I wake the phone up I see the card icon in the status bar for a second.. Sadly I have read that this is a common issue and it eventually can fry the card and make it useless so I have decided to remove it and not use a SD card(main reason I got the phone was for this reason)...since then my battery has been amazing as the media scanner is not constantly running..so far no one seems to have a reason why this suddenly happens as I have not had an issue since I got the s3 which was over 6 months ago and out of nowhere this issue occured..I hope that this may be an software issue which can be fixed in the future or hopefully someone in xda can either find out whats the issue or find a fix till then I will keep my 32 GB sandisk card safe.

Do you use a Sandisk 32GB card by any chance?
I had these same issues, which went away once I changed to samsung cards.
If you can, return the card for replacement, as cards made after december 2012 dont have this issue anymore.
cheers
Interesting, i have exactly the same issue since january 1th. It worked for about a month without any problems (bought it late november).
Now this is killing me how it behaves every 5min. I have reset the phone, updated the phone, formatted the sd-card.. nothing helps.
So if i return my sandisk 32gb, should i ask for a new sandisk or go with the samsung?

I've seen my 64Gb Sandisk card auto unmount and remount itself a couple of times today, have seen it once before. Again was caining the battery on the phone with the media process rescanning it.
Thanks for the app I've installed it to monitor this from now on, to see if its potentially a faulty card.

This app is really great, proves the issue. Like others, I have this problem with a Sandisk Ultra 32gb. I tried popping in an old 4gb card (forget the manufacturer) and had no issues.
Saw somebody else suggesting that the Franco kernel fixed this issue, and sure enough it seemed to have cured it for me for a few weeks, but it's just started again today - your app showed unmounts/ejects happening every couple of minutes, so I've now submitted a request to Sandisk to return the card.
I haven't seen anybody else out here that has mentioned this yet, but every once in a while (couple times a day), my SD will say it was unexpectedly removed, and the inserted again. Normally this wouldn't bother me, but I cache Spotify to my SD card and it stops playback.
I thought it might be isolated to me, but a Co worker with an S4 is experiencing the same thing. I do have a ROM, but I saw this on rooted stock as well.
Sorry if this is covered somewhere else already.

yep my 64 gig SanDisk card did this on my gs3 and 4. I'm sending it back because it might be faulty idk. my 32 gig SanDisk never does it though.. 32 is a class 4, 64 is a class 10 so i think the class might be the issue on samsung phones. hopefully I just had a faulty card, because i miss having all that space.

Ok, after buying a cheap and corrupted 64gb micro sd card, I went and spent the money on a 64gb sandisk card. It works just fine. Now, I am rooted and have synergy rom build 104 which is also running fine. I noticed before I flashed the rom that cwm wouldn't recognize my external sd card. I read up on that and found that cwm won't read cards formatted to exfat. So, I formatted the card to fat32 and remounted, transferred all my music back onto the card. Everything worked just fine until I plugged my phone into my computer. I was able to open and navigate through the files like normal, except when I went to open the music folder where all my mp3s were. I tried this on 2 different computers and on both the computer froze with the sand timer. The phone itself was fine, my music player(poweramp) was and is able to play the files with no issue. Also, when I unmounted the card and put it into a card reader and then connected the card reader to my computer and voila! Everything was fine, I was able to open the music folder and scan through the music files. I am not sure what the issue is. Can anyone shed some light as to whether this is a phone/rom issue, a micro sd card issue, an mp3 issue? Any ideas would be appreciated.
That sounds like a bad sd card. Have you ran a checkdisk on it?

If it's a SanDisk 64GB MicroSDXC UHS-1 then they have a replacement program where the older cards had issues in the S3/S4 devices. They sent me a free replacement and everything seems to be working. No Damaged card errors as of yet.

Hm, been searching around for this exact issue. Coworkers S4 with this exact SD card has been getting the removed unexpectedly error. Reformatted a few times, restarted phone, error comes back. It's in my Note 2 at the moment for troubleshooting, and so far so good, but this makes me move more toward an actual SD card issue in combination with the s4, and not the phone itself.

I called them and they are going to exchange it out for me. The weird thing is that I didn't get any damaged card error messages on the phone itself. It mounted it as soon as I popped it in. Even after formatting to fat32, it mounted right away with no issues. It only happened a couple days after I transferred all my music onto it. Is the free replacement they give you a newer card or newer model number?
+1 to the above. SanDisk told me they have a new version of the 64gig card with updated firmware, specifically for the S4. Package tracking shows mine is to be delivered on Monday.

So when this card tanks, I have to drop the big money on a card specifically made for this phone. Is this a problem with existing cards or did Samsung do something that required this firmware change?

They told me that too. My guess is it's due to the mass recall of the chips for the S3/S4. They said it's not present in Tablets so my 64GB in my tablet would be fine.
+1 problem with Sandisk 64Gb UH-1 card. Unexpected removal error. I am writing just for statistics. Just got my new Verizon S4 - and have problems...
FYI - I'm having a similar issue with a Samsung 64GD card. Got it to see the music for a while yesterday but after a reboot it can no longer see it.
Update, I received my new card and just popped it in. My phone automatically formatted it to exFAT. I'm not going to try changing it to FAT32, but is there any version or way I can get cwm to recognize the card in exFAT format? I tried TWRP, but when I flashed a rom it soft bricked the phone so I would like to stick with cwm.
So I am having a problem where my Sandisk 32GB MicroSD card is getting dismounted from the phone. It gives me an error message like "SD card has been removed. Please use the Safely Eject SD card option to prevent data loss" or something like that. Then, it finds the card and runs the media scan, which renders my card useless for that time period. The screen also turns on for a minute or so during this time. Then it stays mounted for maybe up until 5 minutes before starting over again.
This absolutely rapes my battery, taking it from a full charge to dead battery in less than two hours. I thought maybe the SD card was going bad even though it's fairly new, so I took it out and tried it on my old Motorola smartphone, and it works fine and never dismounts. So I thought perhaps it's something with my phone, so I tried an older 8GB micro SD, and it works fine without dismounting at all.
Some info. Phone is running stock 4.0.4 with root and unlocked bootloader. The 32GB SD card worked fine for maybe 3 months until this problem suddenly started. Any ideas?

I went through four RMA replacement 64gb class 10 SanDisk cards, ate the $90 loss and spent $80 on the Samsung equivalent. It's faster and I have had zero problems with it. However, I used SanDisk cards for nearly a decade before those without any problems.
The SanDisk hi capacity cards seem to not work well in the lgog. They worked fine in my card readers, just not the lgog slot.

And I had issues with the Samsung 64GB until I finally formatted on the phone itself. Since then it's been fine. It seems the SD card issues vary greatly from phone to phone and card to card. I can only offer my experience.

I've had issues with my SD card unmounting itself too. It seems to be random, and happens maybe once a week. It always comes back after a minute or so. I tried formatting it, but it didn't seem to alleviate the issue. My card is a 32gb sandisk class 4.
