Hi, sadly i didn't do my homework very well and bricked/locked/f'ed my player.
I tried installing a Kernel with ODIN (didn't make a backup!) and after it restarted i didn't have my home key (NOT the mechanical one) and back key working. so i flashed what i thought was an original ROM (i guess it wasn't) i still don't have the keys, and i cant get back into the player, i get either 1) bootlooping 2)stuck at the Android recovery console (but i cant click on anything)
Does anyone have a STOCK YP-G90 2.3.6 ROM/PIT/Kernal i can download and install? the one from this link stops randomly:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1520728
Thanks, i hope someone can help!
Update!
After flashing this ROM:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=35350276&postcount=20
And this Kernel:
rj’s Kernel YP-G70-Kernel-r14.tar
I was able to get in and everything, only my buttons still do not work, am i to assume i have the wrong kernel?

Which version of the Galaxy Player do you have exactly? (This one detail is very very very important!)

Fixed! so i flashed DD_01140212.tar kernel and now the home buttons work! in fact everything seems to be working (and now its flashed to 2.3.5 and is now rooted)
From what i can gather is is a Samsung Galaxy Player 5.0 (stock 2.3.6) with capacitive buttons (I bought it in the USA if that helps) Model: YP-G70CWY/XAA
If i need to change anything please let me know

Happy to hear that the immediate panic is past Now let me give you some quick schooling from one Galaxy Player owner to another
You have the Galaxy Player 5.0 USA version (just like me). That means that the home button on your device is a capacitive one (touch sensitive). You said that you flashed RJ's kernel, which is designed for the International version. The International version has a physical home button (an actual button that you push). Basically, you flashed the wrong kernel, and that's why you Player went belly-up and the buttons didn't work. The correct kernel to use with your device is Entropy's kernel: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1445840&highlight=entropy
The moral of the story, my friend, is this: Before you go flashing kernels and roms, do plenty of research, and be sure you have an idea what you are doing. And if something like this happens, just relax. It's a learning experience. Always be sure that whatever you use (roms, kernels, etc.) is designed/compatible with the Player 5.0 USA. It will save you a lot of time and headaches!

I thought i had used this kernel in the first place and it didnt work (may have been a bad rom)
Now that its back in working order, is there a better ROM i should be using? I'm assuming i can just flash roms now and leave the kernel alone, hell worst case is i know i have the working pair saved on my computer and can flash them back.
Thanks again!

As long as you have ClockWorkMod Recovery installed (it comes with Entropy's kernel as I recall), you can flash whatever you want! And yes, now that you have the correct kernel, you can leave all that stuff alone and forget about it. What type of rom is completely up to you. Do you want something that is older, but stable? Or are you like me and want something that's new, more cutting-edge, and is still in beta?

Well, a few things are missing from the 2.3.5 ROM (actually, the only one i care about is it being able to vibrate) but would my player support Ice cream sandwich or jellybean? and if so did someone create a ROM for it and whats the best way to instal it? can i do it though an SD card now that i have the correct kernel in place?
Edit: And as i remember reading i have to make sure each rom is compatible with my device, correct? and if so does anyone know of a place that has them listed by device?
Check the dev section of this forum there are plenty, ICS, a couple Jellybean, and quite a few Gimgerbread ROMS. Just make sure you get the right ROM for your device, USA 5.0 right? Yeah so no 4.0 or 3.6 or 4.2 roms . As a side note most gingerbread ROMs come without a kernel so no need to reflash the correct one. ALWAYS READ THE ORIGINAL POST it will tell you the device, the bugs, and everything you need to do to flash it. Happy flashing!

Yes, our Players do support both ICS and JB! I'm am currently using Mevordel's JB rom: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2077671 It's fast, got project butter, hardware acceleration, and now the camera is working! Vibrate works, also But if you want to use a Gingerbread rom, the two I am most familiar with are Chip and GenericGinger. I think development has stopped for GenGin, but it's still pretty good (it was my first rom and I used it for like a year). Vibrate works on that one also. I can upload the zip if you want to try it. It's tucked away on my computer somewhere......
Flash: if you want to flash a rom, you need to do it through ClockWorkMod (CWM) Recovery (look it up on youtube). To access CWM, turn off your Player. Then push and hold the power button and volume up button until the screen turns on. (Again, Google and Youtube are your friends). You can either download the rom right onto your device, or download it onto your computer and transfer it via USB.
A list of many roms, kernels, and tweaks can be found here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1720457

Before we go into flashing: have you familiarized yourself with CWM? Do you know how to make a CWM backup? When you flash JB, you will have to essentially format/wipe you device, and all data will be erased. A CWM backup will save all of you files, settings, apps, etc. so if something goes wrong, you can restore your device to exactly the way it was.
Do you have any apps you want to take with you on the upgrade? Root your device and install TitaniumBackup from the Market. It will backup all of your apps, which you can restore later after you flash. (just be sure not to back up system apps; that will complicate things. Only back up user apps.)
Copy the backup files (CWM and Titanium) onto your computer for safe keeping, along with any other files you want to preserve (pictures of the cats, videos of the kids, etc.) Double check to be sure you have copies/backups of everything you want to keep.
Ready to start flashing?

Well done! Kudos to you, sir! :highfive:
Have you picked a rom that you would like to flash?
Pro-Tip: You shouldn't have to worry about ICS/JB kernels, as each rom comes with its own.

You are going to want to download 2 things:
1: The most recent file (01/22), which has the camera fix. Don't worry about kernels, there is one included.2: Download the Gapps package. (This has Gmail, the Market, etc.)
After they're downloaded, transfer them onto your Player. You will have to locate and flash them through CWM, so be sure to put them somewhere easy to find. (Maybe make a new folder called "Ready_To_Flash")
Once the files are on your Player, boot into CWM using the power/volume button combo I told you about.
Now you are going to prep your device for Jelly Bean. Using the volume buttons, scroll down until "Wipe data/factory reset" is highlighted. Push the power button and follow the prompts. This will erase everything on your device.
Next, highlight and execute the "Wipe cache partition" option. This will wipe your cache. (duh)
Highlight "Advanced", then "Wipe delvik cache".
Then "Mounts and storage", "Format /system".
"Install zip from sdcard". Locate the rom file, highlight it, then push the power button, follow the prompts. There will be scrolling text. Once that's done, use the same procedure to flash Gapps.
Reboot and enjoy the magic! It might seem like it takes a long time to boot back up, but that's just you being impatient
Don't fret if you get an error code or something goes wrong. There are occasional weirdness when going from Ginger to Jelly.

Glad I could be of help. To disable the softkeys, use an app like Root Browser Lite, and navigate to /system. Open the "build.prop" file (you'll need a root file editor. I used RB Text Editor. Not sure if it came with the rom or not).
Once you have build.prop open, scroll down until you see the following:
#########################################
## You can tweak the next 4 properties ##
#########################################
# Uncomment to switch internal and external storage
# ro.vold.switchablepair=/storage/sdcard0,/storage/sdcard1
# Change to 0 to enable softkeys, 1 to disable
qemu.hw.mainkeys=0
# Defaults to Mass Storage. You can change to mtp
persist.sys.usb.config=mass_storage
# LCD density (240 is default)
ro.sf.lcd_density=240
You'll notice that the second entry mentions softkeys. Change the value from "0" to "1". Save the file; reboot. Softkeys will magically disappear! Congratulation on your new rom! :victory:

flash a different rom on it or do I have to do anything to the current settings. I'm a total noob, its my first android phone.
In settings>about phone>
firmware version = 2.2
kernal version = 2.6.32.9
build number = nero v4.1 twiz edition by Team whiskey
(does build number indicate the current rom?)
I read around this forum and it said that you should ask if you're not compeletely sure about something (or else it could brick!?). So do I just follow the rom flash guide and everything should be ok or do I have to change any settings or permissions of the current rom to make it work?
Also does flashing a rom delete all the apps and their associated cache/settings/etc? Anything I can use to back this stuff up so if I plan to go to a different rom, everything can come with me without any problems? (I guess it would take pretty long to download/install everything and synchronize the settings every time I flash a new rom).
Thanks in advance.
Yes build number indicates rom
Most roms wipe your phone
Download titanium backup from the market to backup apps but don't use it to restore system apps
Before you do anything, please check both guides in my signature. It will help you a lot.
This is what I would do (after you read). These steps basically are giving you a new phone.
Titanium Backup and nadroid backup
move all files (internal/external to pc) (not needed, but can't hurt)
format both internal and external cards (not needed, but may help)
download new rom, move to sdcard/
reboot into CWR
factory wipe, wipe data, wipe dalvik
flash new rom
wipe data/dalvik (not a factory wipe)
reboot... wait 10 minutes (dont touch the phone)
reboot
restore apps with Titanium Backup
reboot
enjoy
As far as roms go, I love Trigger 2.7.1. It's pretty amazing. There are newer 2.2.1 roms out, but they are not perfect yet, great roms, but not like Trigger yet.

Thanks guys, I will follow those steps and install trigger. Btw, don't know a lot of the xda terminology yet, what does overstock mean and what are the differences compared to the normal non overstock? Thanks.
btw "download new rom, move to sdcard/" means the internal storage right, not my external microsd card?
as to the overstock its just a specific version of the trigger 2.7.1 rom. You will find the link in the trigger post here

I will refrain from answering your other question as I am still in the learning process myself and dont want to mislead you.
^ it is a kernel in the development section. It is essentially a stock kernel (not overclocked) so its very stable... the benefit is that it converts the file system to EXT4 (Trigger already does this) and that is a LOT faster.
It also has Voodoo Color (put your brightness at full and be in awww of your screen).
It also has Voodoo Sound (AMAZING quality from your headphones... requires the app from the market, free).
It also has BLN.... since our phone doesnt have LED for notifications, you can use this app to know when you have a notification, it lights up the buttons (ie, home, menu, etc). Also a free app, and a paid version with more features.
SO.... yeah, essentially a stock kernel with a LOT of very cool features. It is also what I run with Trigger.
edit, forgot, it also has a ram hack to free up more ram....
ok cool i'll go with the overstock then. So when I plug in the phone and enable the usb storage, on my computer it shows two drives. One is my external microsd card and one is the phones drive. I have to put the rom on the root of the phone's drive right?
Correct, that would be scard/ if you were using a file system on your phone to move the file. But yes, move to internal root folder.
edit, please read the guides!

And welcome to the Trigger club... Hope you enjoy your stay.
thanks again guys. So I'm on my second day with this trigger rom and I've encountered some bugs, but I can't post in the developer section until i get 10 posts
1) I can't save images from the browser or download
2) The gallery loads insanely fast, but I have an image that is very high res yet when I zoom in to that image it still looks pixelated and not the same quality as when I viewed it in my previous rom. Its the same picture so that hasn't changed, I don't know why its not giving a high res view when zooming in.
MAJOR UPDATE 2/22/12: While the process hasn't changed too much, the key files have all been replaced for greater flexibility, and they are NOT compatible with the old method using rookie1's prep-dualboot zip. See this post for an update path from the old method to the current one.
This guide details how to repartition your internal storage and install two operating systems, or ROMs, side by side. If you're looking for a SD install that leaves the Nook's main storage untouched, you're in the wrong place (see my sig).
This guide takes advantage of the multiboot functionality built-in to CM7.1 nightlies since about #140. As such, it is not compatible with CM7.0.x builds or with earlier boot menus.
What you'll get: Whatever two ROMs you install, each will have a nearly 2GB /data partition for apps and they will share a nearly 2GB /media partition for storage, and both will have access to the SD card for more storage. At startup you will see either a small green bar labeled "CyanogenMod," or the word "cyanoboot" in blue. Both boot menus work the same:
Do nothing, and your primary system will boot
Hold down both volume buttons, and your alternate system will boot
Hold down 'n' for a more detailed boot menu
Hold 'n'+power and recovery will boot (if you installed CWM internally).
All of these actions must be taken in the first couple seconds, before a "loading" message appears below the logo. Once you see a confirmation message, you can release all buttons.
DISCLAIMER: As usual, YOU are responsible for changes YOU make to YOUR device. This process is intermediate difficulty level. It probably shouldn't be the first thing you've ever done with ClockworkMod Recovery, and you probably shouldn't just follow the steps if you don't understand them. If you don't know how your NC is currently partitioned, turn back now. If you want to preserve your warranty, turn back now. Here be serpents; be so warned.
Following the guide as-is with all default options gets you a stock 1.4.1* install on secondary and a CM7 install on primary. I hope you can figure out what to substitute where for different results.
*I don't have access to a CWM-flashable 1.4.2 zip right now, but there are instructions for making one here.
The Guide
Prerequisites:
CWM on either SD or internal recovery (internal recommended)
Wi-Fi access
Materials:
repartitionDual2GBdata
BNpri2alt
reformatData
1.4.1-keep-CWM (IF you're not starting with an up-to-date stock install)
CM7.1+ OR MiRaGe's CM7.2 OR unofficial CM9 nightlies (w/ compatible gapps)
CM7 gapps(look near the bottom of the page)
Steps:
Put all materials in your SD card's root directory (DO NOT UNZIP).
Boot into CWM.
From CWM main menu, "backup and restore" and "backup."
From CWM main menu, "install zip from sdcard," and "choose zip from sdcard."
Choose the repartitionDual2GB file.
Reboot recovery. If you have internal CWM and no boot menu, you may need to use the rhythm method:
verygreen said:
hold nook N key and then press and hold power until the {first} message appears and then disappears with screen going blank. Release power button, then press it again and hold for ~5 seconds, the {first} message should be on the screen for three seconds or so before you release power button, keep holding N button until screen blanks again. If the screen went off while you were holding the power key, that means you were holding it for too long

Repeat step 4 and choose reformatData
If your backup in step 3 was stock, you can "backup and restore" then "restore" and skip to step 13.
Otherwise, repeat step 4 and choose 1.4.1-keep-CWM.
When it finishes, hold the power button to shut down, remove your CWM card (if applicable), and power back on.
Complete B&N registration process¹
Power off and boot back into CWM (may require rhythm method above).
Repeat step 4 and choose BNpri2alt.
From CWM main menu, in "mounts and storage," format system, data, and cache.
From CWM main menu, choose "Advanced" and "Wipe dalvik cache."
Repeat step 4 and choose CM7 update zip.²
Reboot into main partition and set up Wi-Fi.
Reboot into alt partition (hit both volume buttons at once on "CyanogenMod" loading screen) to make sure it's working.
optional: install gapps, keysmod, etc from CWM.
¹Any mods you want to make to stock, do it now: update to a newer version, root with Manual Nooter (if rooting 1.4.x firmware, follow the linked instructions but use MN 5.12.20), flash keysmod, overclock kernels, or anything else CWM-flashable.
²If you backed up an existing CM7/9 install in step 3, then after step 16 just install gapps, install keysmod if you want it, then from CWM's main menu, Backup & restore > Advanced Restore, and restore data only from your most recent backup. When you boot into CM7 (not tested with CM9), it will be just like you left it.³
³Steps 17 and 18 may look unnecessary, but several users experienced force closes in their CM7 installs when they didn't take these steps.

UPDATE 5/25/12: Removed the prerequisite for 1GB/5GB partitioning. A little bird named jicama confirmed that the newer partitioning script doesn't care if you start with a blue dot NC. Prep-dualboot would carve the alt partitions out of /media, which doesn't work if /media's not big enough. RepartitionDual just deletes the last three partitions (/system, /data and /media) and makes new partitions from the now-unallocated space, so as long as you have the right number of partitions, it doesn't matter how big they are.

I'm getting more daring , so I went through this step-by-step this afternoon (thanks for the guide!).
This was a fresh install into a previously stock Nook (I was running CM7 through the SD).
Booting into stock 1.3 works fine - no difference at all.
In CM7, however, I'm having some problems. I installed nightly 201, which worked fine from the SD card. When I boot into CM7, I get a couple "android.process.media" errors at startup, and again when I try to start Market, which just hangs up after a couple of error message popups. I tried to reinstall 201 through CWM which didn't help.
Any ideas? Should I try a different nightly build?
EDIT: also tried 202 with the same results.

You wiped system, data, and cache after running froyo-to-dualboot and before installing CM7? Try wiping dalvik cache, too (under Advanced in CWM), and boot into both partitions after installing CM7 but before gapps or any other packages/restores.

Okay, I'll do that and post results. Thanks.
EDIT: Looks like that did it. Seems to work fine, other than some app FCs, which, from what I've read, are fairly common. Thanks for the assist!
I worked that info into the OP. I've done this process twice now without taking those steps and without getting FCs, but you're not the first to report them.
I was a bit confused about the backup and restore part also. Seeing as my Nook was stock to start, I probably didn't need to do that step, and might have actually caused a problem or two by restoring data that didn't exist to start.
Still working great. The only FCs I've had so far were while trying to run Facebook.
Excellent guide! Thanks for all the work on this, it works great.
This is an awesome guide. Thanks for the help. I've been wanting to do this for a while.
Thanks man.
I appreciate you putting all the tools in one place, and I especially appreciate you posting that us blue dot people needed to repartition to 1gb data before doing this; I should've figured that, but I didn't for some reason.
Moving 1.3 to the dual boot partition as I type
Question though; after I move 1.3 to the dual boot, can I still install modifications to it via CWM?

Short answer: no. As-is, most zips tell CWM to install them to the primary partition. You can modify them to to install to the secondary, but it's a lot simpler if you want to root, install keysmod, or overclock, to do it before you shuffle stock to secondary.
There's a decent chance rajendra82 or someone else will provide dual boot compatible versions of any future B&N software upgrades.

Question: what if I want to stick with Phiremod 6.3 instead of going to 7? Can I do all the steps outlined but just substitute 7 for 6.3? Thanks!
This is the best thing EVER. I got sick of the nook app on my CM7 build, so this worked flawlessly.
I am running the CM7.1.0 RC1 build, and everything runs smooth as silk

Negative, that's built on CM 7.0.3. You would have to use j4mm3r's multiboot and the matching stock-to-secondary file found in this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1156909
Nevermind, dumb question.
Updated with a link to CM7.1 stable
I kept a stock install of 1.2 and installed phiremod 6.3 because the 7.2 links weren't working and I couldn't find one anywhere. How do I boot into the alt-partition on boot? There is no CM7 boot screen (google gears, maybe?) and pressing volume buttons several times throughout the entire boot didn't do it.
can somebody please tell me what I am doing wrong. I followed the steps, CM7 boots ok but when I use the alt, the nook gets stuck on the "n" screen.

Sounds like you got close. I would say start over at step 5.
So I am getting ready to install this ROM, or at least try to. Question I have is when it says to " 1) Download update-unnamed-v1.X.X-full.zip and place it on your SD card", what does that mean exactly? Do I need to download it onto my computer and move it to my phone? Or do I download it right onto the phone?
Also, do I need an external SD card installed into the phone or can I just save the zip onto the internal memory?
Sorry for the newbie questions but I am very new to this. You guys were very helpful when I rooted the phone so I figured you would be the ones to ask again this time. Thanks in advance for your help.
Doesn't matter how you download it and it can go on either SD card, internal or external.

when you wipe, you will lose everything on your phone. So make sure your contacts are backed up. If you have them in gmail, then you wont lose them because after flashing the new rom and once you setup your gmail account, your contacts will come back automatically.
Yup, best for every Android user to import all of their contacts into their Google/Gmail account. I manually entered mine into Gmail when I first got an Android phone. It sucked, but since then I haven't had to worry about it. As soon as I flash a ROM and sign in to my Google account my contacts just pop in like magic.

yep. I spent the hour or whatever to manually enter all my contacts. It can take a while depending on how many contacts you have, but it will save you a LOT of time and headaches later on.
Another question for you, what happens to my stock rom when I install UnNamed? Will it still be available to me should I need to switch back?
With my paid apps, will I be able to redownload them for free or am I going to have to pay again? I have titanium backup but since I am wiping the phone wont everything I backed up get wiped too?

Do you currently have CWM installed? If so, you can do a full nandroid backup from recovery of your stock rom if you choose to go back to stock. If not, Entropy has a great thread in the dev section about loading back to stock.
UnNamed will simply become the one and only rom on your phone (which isn't a bad thing) after you flash it, the stock will always get replaced.
As to your paid apps via the Market, they'll be there for you to download again for free. TB is another good option, just make sure that you ONLY choose 'Missing Apps with Data' for any restoring.

Whenever you choose 'Wipe data', all folders on /sdcard (clockworkmod, titaniumbackup, download, etc.) remain there and untouched. Formatting the /sdcard is another story.
Your answer was correct since the storage area where the contact info is stored will in fact get wiped but it kind of makes it sound as though you will lose everything, which is not the case.

If you don't backup the stock rom you will loose it.
To back up the stock rom which you are using now is easy.
Go into CWM Recovery and select "backup/restore"
then select "backup".
OR if you are not sure about CWM recovery you can always do it the easier way.
Download this app called "CWM Manager" which is available here: http://megaupload.com/?d=TGXMLL1G
This this app is better than a swiss army knife!
This app is so easy to use that even my brother "Mikey" can do it!
The reason it's so easy to use is because it's self-explanitory.
OK, I do have the cwm from when I rooted, so I should be good there.

When ever you see "sdcard" mentioned in any of these posts or replies
people are referring to the internal sdcard unless they specify "external sdcard"
I also found it strange and a little confusing at first but for a different reason,
the reason being is that we really don't have an externel sdcard at all except
for the one which is inside of our phone.
(they are both internal sdcards since both of them reside inside of our phones!)

Long press volume key to skip songs mod
Hi GTG, is there any way you can implement Aerobahn's mod to skip songs from any app like google music, pandora or any other music app to skip songs with the volume keys?
I found a treath for a SGS2 international version that allows this. Any other sugestions. It would be really convinient when playing music via a bluetooth headset. I promess I'll make a donation.
Is it hard to learn the coding the implement this mod to your ROM?
Here is the link for this mod. I also pasted a file that has the code for this mode that works on international SGS2.

Alright, I did all the steps and I am pretty sure it worked bc my AOS dropped considerably. However, when I do the pulldown menu there are still only the five options. And when I hold down the power key there are only the three original options that I had in the stock rom. Did I mess something up? The only thing that was a little different from the instructions was when I chose the zip to install it was called "updated" in my menu instead of "update-unnamed-v1.X.X-full.zip" like it says in the instructions.

Sounds like you flashed the wrong file. What does it show for Build Number under 'About Phone' in settings? It should show UnNamed v1.0.4.
Also, you need to swipe the Notification options to the left to see the additional 5 but if you did indeed flash the wrong file, you obviously won't see that.

Just go download this "update-unnamed-v1.0.4-full.zip": http://www.multiupload.com/9UTPJDVDZQ
After its downloaded put it on your SDCARD (not inside any folders).
Go into CWM recovery and select "install zip from sdcard" then simply
select the "update-unnamed-v1.0.4-full.zip" in your sdcard and flash.
This way everything will be GOOOOD

Hi everyone, I am a total newbie to all this custom ROM stuff.
I have a Galaxy ace rooted but with stock ROM, I want Cyanamod but am a little scared of bricking my phone.
It all seems very complicated so my question is, can somebody kind enough please give a step by step account of what i have to do with all the links for what i need.
Please don't leave anything out, it might seem like something everyone should know but belive me, i don't know it!!!
I am wanting basically at the end of it a phone with more spare RAM, all apps i don't need gone and a stable smooth phone, i might overclock it too depending on advice.
Don't know what you need so my phones details are:
Galaxy Ace GTS5830
Android version 2.3.6 gingerbread
baseband version S5830NEKT2
Kernal version 2.6.35.7 -perf-CL772922 [email protected] #1
Build number Gingerbread.XWKT5
Thanks for your time.
Yo, dude. Don't worry about bricking your phone, you can always fix it with odin by flashing stock rom. Just, dont use ROM manager!
Custom rom? Read the main sticky about installing cwm recovery, then find your favourite rom and follow the steps on the thread about install your custom Rom! By The way, you should read similiar threads, before creating yours. because it's 100 of 'em.
-Beans,
ok firstly u decise which cyanogenmod rom u want as they are many cyanogenmod roms by different developers and many cyanogenmod based roms ..
after u download the rom , put it in your sd card.
so u need to know that u cant flash custom roms with a stock recovery
u need a custom recovery so flash clockwordmod recovery 5 from here :
http://androidflip.com/how-to-install-clockworkmod-recovery-v5-on-galaxy-ace-s5830/
so the above link has a guide too so i assume that cwm 5 is flashed
now go to cwm 5 recovery ( home button + power button) and choose " install zip from sd " and navigate to your rom location
it will take about 3-5 minutes for rom to install
then u ought to to click on " wipe cache partition " this is a very important step
and voila u ahve a cm7.2 powered ace remember the first boot will take a bit long so dont get scared
---------- Post added at 05:21 PM ---------- Previous post was at 05:18 PM ----------
and getting into stock recovery ( to flash cwm recovery ) takes a bit hard work for the first few time
so best of luck press home + power button till u get in stock recovery then flash cwm recovery
In the link you posted it says install to pc then to phones sd card.
Doesn't it have to go in the root folder?
I rooted my phone from the sd card, thats still there, won't that show up when i press power and menu to get into recovery mode?
Where/how do i know which version of cyanamod to get?
As you can see i am totally clueless, thats why i'm worried about bricking it.
What do kernals do?
See...download the zip file from the link dragonoid provided..
next connect your phone to your pc and copy the zip file to the sd card..
disconnect your phone and switch it off...
press and hold power button and while holding home button press and hold power button...u will now boot into stock recovery..next use the volume buttons and select the option "apply update from sd card" and select the zip file u just copied..let it flash and then reboot your device...you now have CWM Recovery on your phone..
next...switch off phone..use power + home button combo boot into recovery..notice the difference as it is now ClockWorkMod recovery..
if you have already copied the rom zip file to your sd card select the option "install zip from sd card" and then select the rom file...after completion wipe cache and partition then go into advanced and wipe dalvik cache...and then reboot...
Now you have CWM and your desired ROM on your phone..

i m sorry to say this but i could not understand a thing of ur 1st 2 lines
there is no root folder ok so u rooted your phone using cwm how stupd of me , i forgot that gingerbread rooting requires cwm method sorry my bad
i m not talking about cyanogenmod version , i m talking about the rom
there are sooo many cm7 based rom in our very own sga android development section so see those roms see which u like . i would recommend cm7.2 by team adreno but many users over here seem to like miracle rom v4 its your choice
and remember u cannot brick ur phone unless you flash a rom or a kernel not meant for ace or install rom manager and mess around with it . so jut chill
and flash cm7 already
a new awesomee world awaits you and your phone
I was afraid too like you the first time but it's a lot simple and easy. Just always take backup of previous ROM in case anything happens. So simple steps which i used:
1. Download Clockwork Mod Recovery (5.0.2.6)
2.Boot into Recovery Mod ( Power + Home button) or search google for pictures or videos
3.Select "Install from Zip" and select the CWM zip file.
4.CWM will be installed on your phone now and it's a great recovery.
5.Choose any ROM you want and put it on your SD card.
6.Now boot into recovery mod, Select "Wipe Data/Factory select" and select "yes"
7.Select "Wipe Cache" and then yes > Advanced options> Wipe Dalvik Cache > Yes
8. Go back to main recovery menu by pressing Back button of your phone > Choose Install ZIp from SD card > Select ZIP> Yes > Wait for it to install and VIOLA. you have installed a custom ROM on your phone
Thankyou, that is exactly what I wanted!

Well mate installing ROM is similar to installing OS on any PC. Format> everything is gone but long live titanium backup pro
CM based ROMs require to flash a zip called "Gapps" in order to use any google service or software like play store. On stock based ROMs, it's not required.

Only thing is can you link me a good version of Cyanamod 7.2 that you recommend as I see there are different ones, I like the simple cyan on black themes if there are different ones?
Btw I have backed up to titanium backup, do i leave it on the sd card or copy to pc because won't everything get wiped?

your sd contents wont get wiped wiping dalvik cache ->only your apps and app data will go...so keeping your backup on sd is safe unless you decide to format your sd card which i dont think you are interested in
Now its getting complicated again, flashing kernal too?
Miracle v4 needs messing with files for wi fi doesn't it?
Everytime I am ready something else comes up, its not simple this is it!
Hi,
I'm sorry if I'm asking something that has been asked a thousand times before, but I can't seem to find a satisfying answer..
At this moment my S3 is running on standard Samsung firmware that I have rooted with Samsung GS3 ToolKit v3.0.
I think I read somewhere that it is advisable to make a backup of some certain parts of your phone, copy the ROM to your phone (I want to install CM9) and reboot your phone with the button combination (home, vol up, pwr) to get it in CWM mode(?).. Then you have to erase something, I think.. and choose the .zip that you've copied to the phone.
Now the next thing that I can't quite figure out, what will happen to all my settings? Like the Wi-Fi networks from friends that I have saved and conversations in Whatsapp.. Will I lose all of that? Or is there a way to save that (with Titanium Backup? although I'm not quite sure what to choose there..)
Can someone tell me if I'm somewhat in the right direction? Or maybe tell me what forum post I should take a look at to get all of this figured out..
Thanks!!

If you have an International S3 and NOT a US model just:
- Download and install the latest CF Root by Chainfire with Odin v3 3.0.4 (you now have root + busybox + cwm)
- Make a nandroid backup in cwm
- Download the latest CM9 nightly + gapps
- Copy them to you internal memory card
- Go into recovery and wipe cache/dalvik cache, data/factory reset and format system in mounts and storage
- Flash the nightly and straight after that gapps
- Fix permissions and then Reboot.
You can generally backup and restore any apps you installed via Titanium. No sytsem apps though, they are known to have issues.
Then use "sms backup+" to safely store your Sms and call log on Gmail.
Make sure you ticked Sync settings for Contacs in your Google account and also ticked to backup your phone data to Google (that will backup your wifi passwords too)
Use an app to backup efs or do it manually through Shell.
Now, download Cm9 + Gapps and optionally eg Siyahkernel, put them in an easily accessible folder on your storage (i call it Ainstall since it will be in the top of the directory listing)
If you're on an older baseband (radio), get DXLF3 modem too.
Reboot in CWM and install cm9 - (siyah) - gapps in that order.
Without leaving recovery, factory-reset your phone. Reboot and enjoy.
Restore your data with the same apps you used for backup (obviously). Again, do not attempt to restore system apps.
