Hey guys,
So I just got my new Note 2 from Amazon. It is running VRALJB. If I plan on rooting and unlocking the bootloader at some point in the future (not like next week, but probably in like 3 months or more), should I accept the update, or just keep it on VRALJB?
Also, I got this phone by using another lines upgrade and signing a contract on that line. During checkout, I had to select from various data plans, and I selected the 2GB per month plan. On the line I am going to activate it on, I have unlimited data. Am I safe to activate it on my unlimited data line? Or is the 2GB plan I selected somehow connected to the phone?
Thanks for your help.
Dont update! Root and freeze sdm 1.0 so you dont get the update.
If im not wrong I think you can switch the phones on the lines and still get unlimited data

Fwiw I agree with everything hamsterskate said.
Seriously? You didn't see all the post and the pinned post that say to not accept the OTA?
root and unlock now...

This.
If you don't root and freeze it you will be left with a locked bootloader because Verizon will force the update on you.
So you either take the OTA and hope that by the time you are ready to run a custom ROM that the devs have come up with a new unlock method, or you unlock and root now using Adam's unlock thread.
There is also a flashable zip that will give you the OTA minus the locked bootloader so you can still run pretty much stock until you decide what you want to do. But you have to be rooted with custom recovery to flash it.

I rooted with Exynos Abuse and then froze sdm 1.0 with Titanium. Anything else I should do?

I have a S4 for Verizon. I have been trying to root it so I can load the Google edition image on it. However, none of the tutorials I have seen seem to work on my device. I bought it brand new direct from Samsung off contract (didn't want to loose my unlimited data) so I don't think I can get a warranty replacement through Verizon (haven't rooted it yet). The furthest I seem to get is that SuperSU gets installed but will not download the binaries. So I cannot continue with the rest if the steps with rooting and re-imaging. Also, most steps have you install a specific kernal version as the first step but not sure if that is happening because my screen don't look the same as the ones in the tutorials.
Phone: SCH-1545
OS ver: 4.3
Kernal: 3.4.0
Build: JSS15J.1545VRUEMJ7
HW ver: 1545.06
Thanks.

Just so you know, the only thing available for MJ7 build is root. Installing a custom recovery or custom ROMs is not possible at this time.

Not with MJ7 firmware they aren't.

No. Once the phone is updated, there is no way to go back.
As I stated above, all we can do is root. With root we can debloat and use Xposed framework to make some changes.

That doesn't really accomplish what I want though. Not your fault obviously. Do you know if this is a Verzion thing or just the device itself? Thanks

It's Verizon, they lock down every phone they sell. You have to do research before you buy your phone if you want custom software on Verizon, or switch carriers.

I know Verzon sucks in that regard but the service is awesome. I get full 4G coverage just about everywhere and I've got unlimited data still. Plus, I didn't buy it from them, I payed full price from an online vendor so that I wouldn't have to change my contract.
Oh well, guess I'll just have to keep an eye out for when someone finally cracks it.
I hate waiting....

Unfortunately the wife accepted hers this morning before I got up. She has lost root. Not sure where we go from there. Maybe we can Odin her back to MJ7.
The idea was to let me unroot hers and prep it before any OTA now I'm not sure if she will get 4.4 correctly. She says it still says 4.3

Not much interest here in a carrier unlock. We want our bootloader unlocked. Two completely different things.

Alright, this thread is being closed...4.3 and unlock discussion has been posted ad nauseum....
So I did a little searching before posting so don't ream me please ??
1) Does the dev edition s4 also have a locked bootloader? That would be f'in whack.. If it us unlocked and my second q doesn't pan I may try and swoop one up. ..
2) I have a friend with a tmobile s4 that he cracked the digitizer and just reported it lost... If I took his board could I unlock it to big red? If so what would be the consequences?

The Dev Edition S4 normally does not have a locked bootloader. I say normally because some users took an Over The Air update which did lock the bootloader. So it depends on whether the bootloader is a stock MDK bootloader or if the user took a subsequent OTA update which in turn locked / changed the bootloader. Also, there is no factor image for the Dev Edition, so if it is locked it is going to stay locked for the foreseeable future. As for your second question, I'm not sure that will work. I think the firmware differences between TMO and Verizon plus the difference between GSM and CDMA will not be easy to overcome. But I don't know that for sure.
I'm not trying to be a know it all trust me lol but the dev s4 never got otas I don't believe. The users who locked then up did so by using Odin and retail firmware.
Just throwing that out there.

I don't take that as you being a know it all, you're probably right. I just know some Dev owners did something to lock their bootloaders I just assumed (wrongfully) that it was an OTA of some sorts. Sorry for the misinformation.

I know one user who received his DevEd about the same time as me. He received an OTA that locked his bootloader. I have never received an OTA, and I'm still running stock (more or less) DevEd.
It's funny how I bought the DevEd, because I wanted a guarantee that I could ROM the device. But I fell in love with the stock OS, and don't care if I ever have KitKat.

No kidding? I didn't know any of them got OTAs. At least you have the option to flash whatever you want if you did get bored with stock.

So I saw on rootzwiki we should be getting kit kat starting may 23 or something. What do I have to do to retain root? I'm on mostly stock vruemj9 with some xposed framework. I don't wanna brick it. Should I just Un root and hope for a new exploit? Should I look at note 3 updates with root? Any advice would be excellent. Also, if there is a way to unlock the BL during this process that would be excellen as well.

Every thread to your question always said to avoid otas. So I would just wait until they come up with an exploit. Who knows maybe with this new update it will unlock our bootloader.
Sent from my SCH-I605 using Tapatalk
Freeze SDM 1.0 to block the update until we see what is up. I don't think the bootloader will be unlocked and other Sammy phones on kit kat are having a hard time getting root.
Okay sounds good. Are there any free apps that do freezing?

First day with my edge plus and I'm wondering if there is a root method and any roms worth flashing. Thanks.
Nope. Won't be for a very long time
Doubt there will be one but I am a rootaholic and since I got this phone I haven't felt the need to want to root. Does everything I need well.

No issues I bet. But probably a difficult process to get there. T-Mobile seems the best for modification, but anyhow, the s6 edge plus just has a hard lockdown because of Verizon making modification difficult, I looked at the T-Mobile variant forumns and they have a custom kernel and a few stock based modified roms
Hopefully is just a matter of time then. Thanks for the info. In the meantime I downloaded Package Disabler Pro and disabled a bunch of bloatware.
Well if you don't care about texting and talking, the tmobile variants do work with Verizon 4g. I've tested and it connects just fine.

to my knowledge i thought even if it did get rooted that it would no longer boot up on vzw/att? pretty sure youd need an unlocked BL regardless which most likely will not happen.. hasnt happened on vzwsammy since early s4 days lol
I don't think these phones have a good chance of getting root unless a universal method like towel root is discovered. Development is pretty much stagnant in the Verizon variants of these phones.

That is true, but it's not a dumb statement , because that is part of it too.
So, you order all you can eat fish and get charged more and draw haters because you ate all you could eat. Wouldn't you be pissed if you bought a car with free oil change for life and 2 years later they wanted to start charging you because they never foreseen you actually using it and taking them for their word.
