I'm having nothing but headaches searching for this. Plus, I'm relying on the internet on my phone to fix the internet on my phone right now, so I've got very little on my bandwidth cap left this month. I'm hoping one of you can help me so I can stop draining my cap with searches that just make me tear my hair out (especially when the internet drops!)
I've got a common problem, the internet connection (and sometimes the entire connection) drops out constantly. In my searches, it appears clear that I need to flash a new modem.
I know I need to do it with Odin, that's fine. My problem is finding a download link THAT WORKS for a modem to flash. I'm happy to try a few until one works for me, but if anyone knows of one that will give me a solid connection to Optus, that would be a bonus.
I'm running Cyanogen 9.1.0 (4.0.4).
Baseband is I9100TDVKF2 (and I assume the "T" there indicates that this was originally a Telstra phone, which it was).
I'm rooted.
I'm unlocked.
Thank you!
Read/search through this thread. Plenty of posts from people at various times mentioning modems which work well with specific networks. That will give you a good starting point.
Obviously look for posts from people who tested X modem with Optus & found it worked well, search for said modem, flash it, test in different locations/preferably over a couple of days to get a feel for how it works for you. If it works well, problem solved. If not, try another. Repeat until you find one that does work for you. Sometimes people using the same modem on the same network can have varying experiences due to carrier side issues (carriers using different equipment on different base stations, congestion issues, etc, etc), so tho most people find certain modems work well with certain networks most of the time, this isn't a given.
To be perfectly honest with you, that sounds like carrier-side/network issues to me.
Ah, thank you!
This is the link that I so desperately needed.
I've flashed DULP4. Here's hoping it works!
Thanks again!
You're welcome. If you're still having probs after testing, post to the AU thread I linked to in my PP & someone using Optus should be able to help (eventually).
All good, it seems to have done the trick. It's much more stable now. Cheers!

Hi Guys,
I recently got the SG2 on AT&T (i777) and the first day I had it stock I was getting consistent H+ connection in my house and pretty much everywhere I was going. I ran the speedtest app a couple times, and I was averaging 2.5-4 mbps downloading which wasn't too bad.
That same night I rooted the phone and flashed Phonebreaker 2.1 rom following the correct steps (Not my first time rooting/flashing roms, I've done it to my Tmobile SG2 a few times). However the following day it seems my data connection has become inconsistent and speeds have slowed down to a drag. The indicator on the phone can never stay on H+ or even H..it consistently cycles from H+ to 3G to H (tried it in same locations as the first day with the phone). I ran the speedtest a few times and my download speeds ranged from 300Kbps to 1.6mbps if I was lucky.
I tried looking around in all the forums, I re-did the APN settings found in these forums, I troubleshooted with AT&T but to no avail.
Anyone have any suggestions? Would much appreciate it as I love this ROM minus this data issue I'm having.
FYI - Stock only shows H+ even if your not actually on it.
Its an illusion AT&T does to make the user think they have great connection everywhere.
Also try flashing a different modem, that might be the issue with your speeds, cause I changed to the leak's modem upon many request.
Thanks LiLChris06!
I tried the KH7 modem which did nothing, and I tried the KK6 which seemed to improve it a bit. I went into AT&T today and they said maybe it's just a defective phone and were willing to switch it out, which I might do.
However I love this ROM so much, is it available without the custom modem you added or with a different modem in the install rather then the UCLK2 I think you included?
Thanks

Hmmmm...what you mean by is it available without the custom modem? Maybe Im reading it wrong. As you know, because you said you have tried different modems, there are many different modems you can try. Shouldn't matter what modem the ROM comes with. Think there is a modem thread around here that has some good info. I think Task also just uploaded the the new LC5 Modem
I should have worded my reply a little better, and it might come across as a newbie question but basically I was wondering if that rom came with the stock modem the i777 comes with because when I had the phone the first day stock, the data speeds were pretty reasonable (3-4 mbps/downloading).
Wasn't sure if flashing different modems other then the one that came with the phone originally would help out my issue, but I suppose it doesn't hurt to try. I did find the UCLC5 modem so I'll try that in a few minutes along with the other ones I haven't tried. If no luck, I'm going back to AT&T to exchange, probably defective phone like they said.
Thanks again for everyone's help
Sweet, found a solution!
I tried all 7 different modems under the same conditions, KJ1, KJ4 and KK6 were around the same ball park. KH7 and UCLC5 were a bit slower but close to each other, UCLC2 was by far the worst..and the winner was KJ2, big difference.
Thanks guys!

Hello everyone. I got my SGS2 just a few days ago so I dont know much about it and I was wondering, what is the best modem for Europe? I got the phone with custom ROM already and the modem is XXLS6. Don't know if it's good for Europe or not.
I tried searching for answer in google, but with no luck.
Thanks in advance to everyone who at least tries to answer my foolish question.
the best thing is to try a few different modems and see which suits you. modems have different pros and cons depending on location.
The thing is I don't even know where to start. I see a list of 50+ modems. And it would take weeks to test them all.
Doesn't your current modem work properly? If not, maybe you can ask in the specific thread(s) about modems which one is the most used in your country.

Well the thing is that with this phone I get no network while I'm at work. Network was ok when I was on my old SGS. And I was thinking that was caused by modem.
Try to found out something about a better modem in this thread:

I thought there was a comment on the first page about some modems that usually work quite well in Europe. Good luck.

I have a Samsung Galaxy SII, the i777. I have rooted it and loaded ShoStock3. I love the ROM except I'm having trouble downloading apps from Google Play. The research I have done suggests that I need a better modem. I have downloaded and flashed six different modems. Each one just as slow as the last. I'm in Salt Lake City, Utah. I know that the location can have something to do with the modem as well. Does anyone have a suggestion on which modem would work the best? Also, if you happen to know that there is a separate problem and that it's not the modem, will you please let me know? Everything else seems to load fine, it's just trying to load apps from the market that I'm really noticing it is really slow. Thank you everyone in advance.

Modems are good in different places. What's good for me might be awful for you. Have you done a speed test?

You've already flashed 6 different modems, you should know by now which one is the best for you out of those 6.
If you don't like them all, try some more and pick out the best.
Have you tried KH7 or LL6?
Side note: why can't you use Wifi for Google Play?
You are I assume flashing modems for this device right? I only ask because obviously the i9100 modems wouldn't work for us. (And I'm pretty sure calls don't work with them) also, if you are flashing all these modems and they ARE for our device, and NONE are working properly, I would look at a fresh flash of the rom of your choice wiping everything again or going back to stock to eliminate hardware error possibility.
I did verify that they were all for my model and network. None of the six were any better than any other. I also noticed none of them worked on the 4G network. I tried to download an app to do a speed test but after 30ish minutes waiting for it to download on each modem so I could test it, I gave up.
Shoman94 changed to UCLL6 modem on his latest build. Are you using this one now?
Or you can select all the modems from here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1336958
They seem to be working OK, at least for me. I have tried at least half of them although I am still running ICS (CM9.1), not JB like you.

In the Settings of ur phone, since u r runnin SHOstock 3, do u have the Mobile data box checked under Data usage ? And do u have the "Set mobile data limit" box checked under Data usage (this could hinder u) ?? And under More settings/Mobile networks is the Network mode set to something Other than the "GSM/WCDMA (Auto mode)" (this could also be the problem)??

So, I un-rooted my phone but from what I understand, even doing that won't re-set my modem. It's still working slowly. My biggest fault here was not doing speed tests from the beginning and not noting down what my phone came with. If I could find what modem my phone came with, I would root and load it back on.
I really appreciate everyone's help and suggestions.
Is there anyone in Utah on the 4G version of the SII that could tell me what their modem is?

Hello people,
For the past few months I'm having this issue which I find extremely [email protected]!!
Every few minutes, my phones just loses internet connectivity - the 3g signal appears to be normal during all the time, thing is, whenever I try to use any internet application - it just hangs. and then, after a minute or so, connectivity is back(again, for a few minutes).
I have tried flashing so many versions of modems - some improved it a little but most of them didn't help at all, or even made it worse.
Hopefully someone could help me with that as I'm that close to give up on this and buy a new phone.
Thanks in advanced.
Nir.
Which firmware are you running on your phone? What modem do you have right now and where do you live? Do you have problems with all apps that use internet-connection? Do the problems dissapear when you use wifi?
Just some information would be usefull

Yop.. forgot to mention a 'few' things...
Model: GT-I9100
Rom: RootBox V3.8
Kernel: 3.0.31-CM-g7ce58e6
Baseband: I9100DXLPB
Android version: 4.2.2
I live in Israel, bought the phone in Thailand.
I tried flashing all available Israeli modems(from various cell phone providers) - none helped.
Problem disappear when I move to WiFi - as 3g connectivity moves to background...
Thanks.
I assume you've read the Rootbox threads to see if other people experience signalproblems?
Did you compare the connectivity with other roms? Stock-based roms for example...

That seems quite weird.. The only thing I can come up with is 1) a hardware problem, or 2) you live in an area where the signal is crap
Hopefully someone else knows anything.. Good luck.

If you've only tried flashing the modems bundled with stock roms from Israeli carriers, you haven't done nearly enough. There are literally dozens of modems available, you need to start flashing as many as you need to. This isn't going to fix itself magically.

I haven't flashed only Israeli modems but others as well. I've tried around 20 so far...
Question is, which direction should I choose? should I look for Thai modems or IL?
That depends. I know Israeli carriers sold (still sell ?) the I9100T, are you sure you don't have one of these ? If that's the case, I'd be trying modems bundled with roms released by the Australian & NZ carriers which sold the I9100T (I have one), and yes, the Thai ones as well.
If you do have an I9100, then keep trying any/every modem you can get your hands on. If it's not a carrier-side issue, this is really all you can try, unless you want to start messing around with RIL's as well. I've not found any difference in connectivity doing this personally (tho many people have) but if you get to the point of trying every single modem & you're sure it isn't a carrier issue, you might as well try. But I would leave this till last given many people find their connectivity messed up even worse by flashing an incompatible RIL.
Hello fellow XDAers,
after switching over to my dads old SGS2 (i9100) i'm having nothing but problems. I'm in germany and use a O2 prepaid reseller for phone and mobile internet. I'm a happy user of CM ... have been, anyways. After a while of use (~2 months) somehow mobile data would be unavailable after leaving WiFi. After a while and trying virtually every fix proposed on
code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=40514
i started thinking "uh, maybe my old modem firmware isn't quite the best idea ... after all, many users report that new modems both fixed that problem AND increased battery life and mobile data performance".
This is where
all
started
going
down.
I've since tried many Roms, including the ages old official samsung one, and every 2nd or so CM since CM9.0. I've tried many Modems, including the ones reviewt on
eric10234.wordpress.com/2012/07/13/samsung-galaxy-sii-i9100-which-modem-is-best-part-4/
As well as the "good" ones such as BVLP*, XXLP6, XXLQ6, NELP2, NELP4. Each on many Roms. I've tried each Modem with the stockroms RIL, the CM versions RIL, as well as the "correct" RIL obtained by the GetRIL app.
NONE OF THEM WORKED. Some worked better ... whereas better means "sometimes a connection ... maybe even phonecalls for 30 seconds", whereas worse means a 40°C Cellphone after 5min and not even a signal indicator in the Statusbar... yay.
Now i'm kind of lost. I don't know what else to try -- especially if even the stock roms fail. I somehow have the feeling that this is not hardware or carrier related, so i still suspect this to be some kind of software ****up.
Please help me getting this straight again ;(. Thanks in Advance / for reading. Best Regards

*EDIT: I've also dumped a radio log of my current combination (UNKNOWN RIL, BVLP6 Modem, CM10.2-NIGHTLY): tmp.kanojo.de/radio.log ... unfortunately its not very informative to me ... except ~something~ goes wrong.

I must admit that i haven't. However, i somehow fail to understand how not doing this could lead to my problems. The modem firmwares and RILs are ~5 files which, as far as i understand and can try to verify using strace, ltrace and gdb, do neither read any config files, nor read additional binaries or libraries.
That said, i'll still try making a titanium + CWM backup, backup those on my computer, and try this and reflashing a current CM. Lets see whether that helps.
Thanks for the pointer, i haven't stumbled upon that script collection yet .

Still - if you have been flashing different roms and never done a thorough clean I recommend you do!

With each iteration of flashing a certain Modem on a certain ROM, i've tried both, the defaul RIL that came with that ROM as well as the matching RIL that GetRIL suggested for this modem. It usually made things worse for me though -- sometimes as bad as bootloops ;/.

Well, depends on what a thorough clean is. I always format /system, format /data, format /cache before i flash a ROM. I then restore the apps + datas backup i've made with titanium.
To be on the safe side, however, i'm going to take a few hours to tinker around with those wipescripts JimSilver posted before...
Thanks for your help! I'll report back .

Heyyas Everyone,
soooo, after a few days of use i must say ... i do not understand why this works! NOT AT ALL! I've left the BVLP7 Modem that i had, and used the RomNuker/RomWiper Scripts, then reflashed CM stable, restored all my stuff with Titanium and ... IT WORKS! I get very good reception almost everywhere, and Mobile Data is available directly after leaving WiFi, with only minimal noticable handover time. PERFECT!
THANK YOU GUYS!!!111oneoneone
The only thing thats left now is that the modem seems to drain battery *quite* heavily. No matter what resource intensive applications i use, not even 3D OpenGLES Games get the cellphone warm. One 250kb/s download and the thing is BOILING. Also it tends to eat up lots of battery when there is no signal. That was way better before, but i'll start digging around and searching for a fix.
Again, i wouldn't have thought that something so simple makes such a difference! THANKS!
Best Regards
