Loud Audio Recording SUCKS - AT&T LG Optimus G

I went to a show last night and took some videos.
The audio recording on this thing is terrible.
I go to a lot of metal shows, and have been able to capture the action beautifully in the past. This was not even close to a metal show in volume, and the audio sucked.
Coming from an Atrix 4g which handled loud recording like a champ, this is quite a let down.
I remember that video recording at shows worked best on any stock based rom for the Atrix. Trying it with Cm, the audio would come out crappy.
I think the reason it is so bad is because the mic sensitivity is way too high. Does anyone know how to reduce it?

Even semi loud recording is terrible... Wasn't sure if it was the app or the phone at the time.

im on the same boat at the moment, my S2 is a champ at it when it comes to loud audio recording and my OG is supposedly going to be my new vlog cam for the car, looks like ill have to invest in something different

There is a mod that was posted that'll enhance camera / video and audio recording. I've noticed a huge increase in quality in all 3 aspects. Check the dev section.

the last phone i had that could handle high quality recordings was a nokia n97 4 years ago, since then the 4 phones i had were crap compared.
I would recomend an external mic to record concerts, that's what i do.
here u have some info http://goo.gl/57vRX

could you post up a video for reference? i'm curious how the video itself looks.
i personally use my work phone (iphone 4s) which does great except for bass clipping. it is better to use a separate voice recorder (i use an Olympus WS-210S which works fantastic).

Here are some samples...
First is an Arkona show from last March. This was shot with the Atrix and the sound is amazing... for a phone.

Good grief. The OG is absolutely TERRIBLE. It's a distortion fest.

I really think the mic gain needs to be turned down...

Thanks - that is pure crap. Much worse than anything I have ever heard.
LG fail.

Any one using the nexus 4 mode see any improvement in sound recording

I wonder if the boeffla sound app will help once we get a custom kernel you can control mic sensitivity

Is there a way to better call quality??

I just got my Rezound and one of my only complaints is the call quality. It sounds very distorted. I wasn't sure if there was a mod or something I could flash to change or better the call quality.
Search is your friend.
Scroll down to almost the last post.
Thanks, I did a search and for some reason didn't see that. Anyways, tried it and calls still sound off. Im beginning to think that it's a speaker issue.
My first rezound had a bad ear piece speaker. Sound like the speak was blown out. The new phone I have is perfect. Exchange the phone.

poor video recorded sound quality

Just wondering what you guys think of it? I go to a lot of concerts and music festivals and the video quality on the note is superb. However, the sound from the video is horrible. The one thing that me and my friends all agree upon is the video sound recording on the iphone is better than any phone out there. The note simply cannot handle loud sounds, particularly really loud bass. The sound on the whole video is just off and it sounds like the microphone is in direct wind. Dont get me wrong, I love the note and I am an android fanboy, however I think this is an area which the iphone dominates. What do you guys think about the sound recording quality? Is there anyway to fix this through software? hardware?
never found a problem with audio from video recordings. few weeks ago i was filming a drift event at a local track and sound came out fine with all the loud noises going on.
Speaking of, do you guys have any YouTube links of vids with your note?
I just can't seem to live with out a removable storage, and I have been leaning in the notes direction.
I am just worried about video, and pic quality with the note...I had a 4g galaxy s and the pics were awful.
Sorry if I am hijacking.
What's your honest.opinions about vid quality?

the playback of audio recorded with a video is going to bad if you are recording anything with a lot of bass or any high dB sounds that are above the microphones ability to capture. These phones use a microphone thats really just a small speaker, when loud sounds are being emitted and your trying to capture them they can ofter "bottom out" the microphone so that all you hear is loud static distortion or if the bass is really heavy, nothing at all.

I think the video quality is awesome on this phone. I haven't watched them on any external devices though, my opinion is purely off of viewing the videos off the phone.
As far as the drift meet you went to, I'm pretty sure the note can handle the sounds of screeching tires, I am mainly talking about BASS. I understand that almost all devices have a certain limit until the microphone can no longer handle the strong bass. The sound gets distorted, and you can't hear anything else. All I am saying is that somehow the iphone is able to handle strong bass at a concert even when you are standing pretty close to the stage. Anyone else experience the distorted sound on their note?
I have personally experienced this and it must be due to the different build qualities of the microphone. Is it possible to attach an external microphone via the headphone jack and use that to record video sound rather than using the one built into the phone? that would make a huge difference IMO

http://youtu.be/N06GsbGyh28 shot this 2 weeks ago, first time messing with video on the phone, i was impressed by the clarity of both picture and sound, just need a dern zoom feature while filming
also not sure why your expecting amazing quality sound from recording a live performance, no matter what phone if ur close to the speakers your not going to get non distorted sound, ive owned every iphone and never heard clear quality sound after going back and watching vids i took at partys and such, i do belive i saw something on engadget the other day about a better quality mic u can plug into the headphones jack
http://www.engadget.com/2012/05/31/irig-mic-cast-hands-on/ well its for idevices but im sure there has to be something similar for android
I was just thinking about this before bed last night. I was looking at some recently shot kareoke videos from my note. The audio quality is absolutely horrendous. Like...disappointing bad.
My atrix was was leaps and bounds better. Was able to handle (and reproduce) bass just fine. Never distorted the audio like the note does. From concerts (rock mind you) to kareoke, anything...I guess its an unfortunate con ill have to live with.

I know exactly what you mean, in terms of capturing sound at, say...a concert. It is overpowered. I've heard that one way to tackle this problem is to put tape, or a finger, over the mic hole when recording.
Here's a vid I took when I saw The Black Keys a cpl months ago. I even wrote in the description that it's a shame the sound is crappy...

I am not expecting amazing sound quality, just good enough so that it doesnt sound like crap. Obviously microphones on phones have their limits, but as I have stated, and as others in this thread have stated, the note is pretty bad at recording sound. My girlfriend has an iphone and all of my friends have iphones, and trust me, the sound recording is much better on it. Still love my Note though, best phone ever!
I seen rammstein and just like the others said.. Very loud sounds makes the audio sound very muffled and hard to hear.. I wonder if I had the the recording volume set halfway. If it would of sounded better?
Intro rammstein:

I can tell you this, its way better than HTCs Video playback. Their sound quality is low.

I found a solution by connecting the ear set of the phone and using it`s mic to rec sound. At levels as high as 110db that i tested (in a consert)
Sound quality was audible enough. So thats my pov on this subject. You should try it.

Pretty good.
Is this the stock camera apk or did you install the HQ mod? -- which everyone still seems to be on the fence about if it actually indeed makes a difference. Furthermore, what's the average bitrate of the video?
I'm very impressed with not only the video, but the audio recording too. I've seen many clips like this on youtube where the horns are so loud that it totally gets distorted in the recording. Not so much on the LTE! And believe me, the horns were LOUD. There were about 80 of them standing about 15 feet away.

edit: this is using stock, unrooted evo, default camera settings.

That really is impressive. The audio quality is insane compared to most devices out there.
How did you make it 3D on YouTube? Did you convert it to 3D somehow or did the phone record in 3D through magic? *explodes*

Here's one I took at night - this seems to do substantially better than 1st gen GoPro cameras (both in video quality and audio quality).
I have yet to square it up against the latest gopro but that should be soon.
This was late at night, so it was quite dark out.

[Q] How good are the speakers?

Everyone knows the One has great sound. Since I don't know anyone who currently owns the One and don't think I can get a real feel in-store, can current owners give me a comparative opinion?
My frames of reference are the Galaxy Note 10.1 stereo speakers and the Nokia N8.
Thanks!
I had the nexus 10, which I think was supposed to have the same speakers as the galaxy note series.
The One's speakers are much fuller in terms of range and soundstage. Highs are higher and lows are deeper.
The only positive aspect of the N10/Note's speakers were that they were front spacing, quality wise they were relatively crappy-sounding.
I'm very pleased with the speakers, I will admit I thought they would be a little louder but the sound quality is impressive. If you disable beats the volume is a little greater Imo. I'd try to find a demo unit and mess with it.

They're almost obnoxiously loud, but the quality is amazing. I don't want another phone with rear speakers.

They won't replace any headsets or speaker docks, but they have brought built in speakers from hideous to surprisingly acceptable. They're magnitudes better than the very very low bar that is the norm.

I had to get a new alarm clock that slowly increases the volume of the alarm over 5 minutes. The standard alarm on the One scared the crap out of me in the morning on two occasions.
I agree with the others. The sound is loud but also clear. My GS3 speaker would get loud but that was only if it was facing away from you or if the sound was reflecting off of something. While it was loud it sounded really distorted. The speakers on the One are loud and don't sound like a teeny tiny cellphone speaker. They sound like decent laptop speakers.

Is amazing how good and crisp they sound. One of those things that you think is overhyped marketing.....and when you see it in action you don't want to get another phone with rear speaker. Crisp. Clear. If music played has stereo quality it comes out as it should. Obviously, these are small speakers, but for the size it's amazing.
I use my One to play music for my office floor. Rameses b. Not bad stuff. Check him out.
Excellent speakers.

I love the speakers, they are loud, but not overbearing, the quality is much better than most others phones I have heard. Im happy I dont have to cup my hand behind the phone anymore just to hear the sound when im watching a youtube video. all in all, I think its the fact that the speakers are in front instead of on the back, it makes for a better user experience IMO.:good:
My 2 year old can finally listen to "wheels on the bus" in stereo quality, praise the Lord!

HTC One Video Recording Test With a Jet Fly By

Just picked up this phone a week ago and I was very sceptical at first. Being a long time Samsung user and a fan of TW I'd thought I couldn't get used to the Sense..
But the phone is still in my hands. Not because of battery life, or screen. But because of the amazing sound out of those tiny speakers. Today I went to a local air show and thought I'd see how the mic's would enjoy some extreme loud scenarios.
As you will here, the One does exceptionally well. I've taken many cell phones to concert events and hockey games that just can't record properly when under anything loud.
This is also by far the loudest I have ever recorded a video before. The video does not do it justice. A F-18 flying that close, I can't describe it. You can feel it in your chest.
Anyways, enjoy!

Hi, I've got also a HTC One and I film often concerts, loud car actions (drift, drag), or air shows (real planes and also gas and jet model planes).
Only my biggest hand cam (Pana X900) can reproduce the sound like it, the others get overdriven.
My main problem is, the videos have a low compression (high bitrate, about 15,5 Mbps), which is not surely needed in each case, and eats the memory..
Do you have any idea or experience, how to lower the compression, wihout changing the HD-resolution?
Or which is the currently most useful video converter, my RiverPast Video Cleaner and BoilSoft converter are unable to make an easy batch conversion.
Thanks in advance!

Honestly, no. I am mainly a photographer, and had my DSLR at the show. I by chance tried a video on the HTC One when the jet made the closest pass. Unfortunately I didn't have the nice cam out to get some close ups.
If your asking how to lower the compression on the video recording for the HTC One itself, you would need a custom ROM and a developer out there. I've seen such things done on my old Note 2 but none for this phone.
