I got my galaxy note back in July and The battery would get in the red a lot from my host sisters and their friends playing games but the phone didn't die too much. On jan 5th though my host family got wifi and my host sisters, their friends, my host mom, and some neighbors are always using my galaxy note and iPad pretty much until they die. Both devices are having to be charged daily because they either die or are having very low battery left. Today though when I went to unplug my note from my lap top the phone said 0% charging and died once I unplugged it. I could not get it to charge on my lap top and when I plugged it into the wall charger it started charging but did not show any green on the battery at first. So my question is could letting my phone die every day have hurt the battery? I charged it a little bit before coming here to the hotel for the faster Internet and while walking at 31% I was able to listen to music for about 30 minutes before arriving and now the battery is still in the yellow. Or could this have just been a hiccup on my lap top? I don't know if it matters but the current lap top in question was purchased in dec 2007 and running vista and every time I plug it again before the USB menu shows up I get a message on the pc saying it cannot recognize this device and the phone tells me to install some windows service packs, but so far that bad never stopped the phone from charging.
If I do have a bad battery is there a certain name for the one the galaxy note takes? Also would a foreign one work because I am currently in Gerogia and most of their electronics seem to be imported from Russia.
First, USB port on laptop most likely won't push enough power to charge the phone efficiently. It will take forever to charge.
And, letting your phone die is not going to break your battery, but it will be better not to let it die.
If your computer doesn't recognize the phone, you should install the driver file for the note. Not having driver file installed won't stop it from charging, because it will still power the device once it is connected.
There are many, many aftermarket batteries available for Galaxy note. As long as it is designed for Galaxy note, it should work.
Ok good to know but is it really important to instal the drivers because I can transfer pics fine to lap with out it. Also it seems the battery will lose its charge quicker while just being on then it did 4 months ago. Is that just due to wear and tear?
Drivers... not really, because the computer would just recognize it as a usb storage. But you mentioned that your comp doesn't recognize it, so... if that's a problem, driver will fix it.
As for battery draining, 4 months isn't too long of a time to start seeing drastic dropoff, but it is possible. However, you might have had installed widgets/apps and other mods affecting your battery life. When battery dies alot quicker than normal, it is more likely that you have some sort of app running in the background.

hello all,
i have spend the last 24 hours searching this forum, as any true newbie with an XDA should i got mine from a friend, but it was not used for over a year, so the battery was empty. i recharged the phone, but it won't turn on. i have readed a lot of topics here about phones that only go into bootloader, but mine does nothing at all. when i put it in the charger, the led turns red first and then orange and stays that way. it also won't turn on while it's in the charger.
i tried a soft and a hard reset, several times, i checked the battery, it gives 2.8-2.9 volts, i also tested the sim door switch, but that also seems to be ok.
also when i attach the USB cable to my pc (windows XP SP2 prof) it detects a device, but cannot make out what kind of, active sync also cant find the xda.
i don't know many more specs about it, cause i have not yet got it running. anyone got any sugestions for me that would bring back the phone to life?
greetings and thanks in advance!
These units tend to use a Lithium Ion battery:
If the battery is left plugged in and not charged for an extended duration, they tend to die beyond repair. Even though it says it may be charged, it is probable that it is not, and the unit will not power on without a certain amount of charge.
Is there any way you can try a known good working battery??
i know a few things about batterys too, so this thought had crossed my mind allready, but i hoped the xda would be able to run from the charger, so i could see if it was working.
the battery is coming back to life real slowly, but i think i'll have to look for a new one. the voltage is 2.93 volts at the moment and coming up with about .1 volt/hour. i think it needs to be 3.6 volts (like most lion accus)
tnx 4 the msg, if anyone has any other suggestions, would love to hear them
ps. maybe someone with an xda can measure his battery voltage for me so i can compare? you can check it on the back of your XDA with a simple voltage meter, just take the cap of the contact pins for the external battery and use the most left and most right pin.
Don't know about the XDA, but my XDA II does not run from the charger if the battery is removed or really flat - if it is really flat, I get nothing but a red lamp for a while till the charge has reached a certain level, then the unit turns itself on.
As the title would suggest, my poor GS2 gets VERY hot when charging. Not all the time, but often.
If I charge from my PC's USB, it doesn't, but when I use a mains charger, it overheats.
When I finish my night shifts, my battery could be down to 20%, so when I go to bed, I plug in the phone, set it's alarm and pop it under my pillow, like I have done with every phone I've ever owned without issue. I wake up during the night and pull out the phone to check the time and almost leap out of bed because of how hot the device has become.
To make matters worse, it's discharged in battery power. This morning was the final straw, as when I checked the phone and it was red hot, it was also dead. I held down the power button and booted up the phone. It showed 15% battery left. I know people say that when it's charged, remove it from the charger, but it isn't practical. Besides, I've never had to do this on any other phone I've owned. This is unacceptable for me to rely on any more. Is this a common issue?
Or my fault because I have rooted the phone the tried custom roms/kernels/modems on it before?

1) change to a diff kernel and see for the issue.
2) well charging from 10~20% to full 100% will lead to heat up the phone than charging from 50~60% to full 100% , hence also check for the same and see

I should have mentioned. This happens on any Rom and I've tried 4 kernels and still the same issue. Only thing I haven't tried, is going back to Samsung stock rom. Going to try that today, see if that solves it and report back.
Like Samsung told my wife "when it gets hot dial *#*#4636#*#* and note the battery temp".
Is it still under warranty

Well the PC's USB output would be limited to .5 A whereas your wall charger could provide 2 A. This might just be normal IMO, although I can't say that my phone gets ridiculously hot during charging. As others mentioned, I would check the battery temp.
The issue is already in his post and the solution as well.
1) The S2 has the tendacy to get hot. Its all very compact and there are no internal ventilators so the S2 dissipates heat to the rest of its body.
2) There is a Power difference between the charger and a USB cable. The charger gets hotter since it delivers power directly of a higher voltage and slightly higher amps then a usb port.
Your issue comes from one sole thing. Your bed. beds have very poor heat dissipating abilities, in fact, it has none. Considering no fresh air is delivered to your device, because it is stored under your pillow. Not to mention your pillow, the rest of your bed stop heat from leaving and it builds up. Ontop of that your heavy head is resting on it, pressing the pillow tight around the device.
in short, it has no way to relieve the heat. There is a simple solution of a non technical matter. Don't put the darn device under your pillow.
(the same counts to people that use there laptops on there beds pillow or covers without a proper cooling matt, before wondering why the hell there device shut down all of a sudden.)
The problem is you put your phone under your pillow. I made this mistake a few weeks ago and the phone was too hot but no problem when i charge it somewhere not under the pillow
I agree, I should stop doign that. But one question, if that's the case and the getting hot is normal, then why did the battery drop from 100% to 8% while plugged in?
Your cooking the battery, thats why.
i'll admit i charge my phone and leave it ON the bed so air still circulates but it did used to get hot. Not sure if any changes i've made such to things kernel, ROM, modem or undervolting has caused my change in temps but my phone never feels warm anytime day or night weather its on charge or not where as my partners phone (stock sgs2) does get hot using the same charging habits as myself

Another odd issue. If I mains charge my phone or connect it to my laptop(not PC the PC charging seems to not effect it) the phone lags. Menus take longer and it really struggles to register my touches on screen.

For the AC charger this problem is known: if the charger is of poor quality it will generate too much 'noise' (ripple) which disturbs the electric field used by the touchscreen. However the original Samsung charger is of good quality and does not have this problem.
Experiencing these kind of problems when charging by a laptop USB port however is abnormal.
Interesting.
I bought an official Samsung charger off ebay, and it produces the same results. Much to my frustration.
Leaving it plugged in all night however was fine, I placed it on a shelf and the phone was actually cold when I woke up. I'm just worried the battery is ruined. It seems to drain quite quick.

Another problem i faced recently was the battery draining to fast, i was told to pull the battery out for atleast 3 mins, this lets the CPU etc cool off, since then i've had no problems at all and getting a good 12 hrs atleast on battery use

Ok so my note has had charging issues, I've tried every outlet and adapter and cord and computer in my house, and the charging is still horrible. I just replaced my charger port and it's having the same issue as before, and I've tried 3 different batteries. I've had it for awhile so no warranty, plus my first one had the exact same charging problem, so now second phone with it's second charging port. Samsung has been absolutely no help, and I've decided I'm never buying their products again for having issues with this product and others.
I really need help tho, I have no clue what's wrong with it. Not the battery, nor port, nor cables. And it's difficult to use my old 3inch phone after using this one for so long.
Anyone have any suggestions? I really hate how my parents have the same phone and never had an issue with it, but I end up going through 2 phones and 3 charger ports within a year and few months.
How long does it take to charge when your phone is off?
What's running when you're normally charging with the phone on?
It should take 2.5 hours to charge a 2500 mah battery with a 1 Milli amp charger when it's off.
Apps running kill battery. If the screen is on full brightness and you're running a gps app it will barely charge.
Install "wake lock detector" to see what apps are hogging battery resources.
Pick a parent. Wait till they are asleep. Nandroid their phone and move to your sd card. Nandroid your phone and move to their sd card. Switch phones and restore both Nandroids. Done.
Or maybe try a wall charger for your battery.

It's usually just messenger, but I mean the phone has no charge connection and shows it wont charge as I thought it was the usb port. It wont even charge while off. and I always use the lowest brightness.
hi.
i got the htc for about 3-4 months. at beggining it was perfect. good battery and charging FAST AS FCK , but now, it charges SO slow.
im using the original htc cable to charge it, the cable that came with the phone. and plugged in to the wall plug.
if im using the phone while its charging its just not charging and even the battery still goes down WHEN ITS CONNECTED. so for it to charge i need for like 3-4 hours not the touch the phone at ALL.
at the beggining when i got the phone i could be gaming on the phone and still battery whould go up. now even if everything is closed, ONLY whatsapp is open and im on whatsapp the battery keep going down.
all my apps are closed and nothing running.
any solutions for it or what should i do?

Well the logical step here is taking out variables. Since the phone is the more costly, i would suggest replacing the charger with another that does at least two amps and see if it is the problem. They can go bad since they are being put under a good load by the phone. If the charger is not the problem then the battery may be bad. Unfortunately they are not replaceable by the average user. The phone would need to be sent in for repair or replaced.
I get service from Qlink. They sent me a refurb as all their phones are refurb, Sprint Samsung Galaxy S2. It came with 8 or 4gb and a 1400 battery or something. A much smaller battery then the retail phone.
Ever since I got it, it won't hold a charge. I don't remember if this started right after I got it because it took me a long time to notice it won't hold a charge. I'd charge it and when I would shut off the phone and try to turn it on a few days later it wouldn't boot. I'd have to charge it for hrs before it'd even boot. When I shut off phone it would always have over 70% battery. Then I notice it says connect to charger even though it is.
Then all of a sudden it stopped charging. I have a 4 port smart charger and cable that has no problems with my other android phone which is an unlocked Moto X Pure or my iPhone 6s Plus.
I ordered from Amazon a sprint galaxy s2 battery. Got it. Plug in and charge many hrs. Turn on. Battery shows about 93%. Turn off phone. Les then two hrs later I turn it on and lost 4% charge to 6%. That doesn't seem right. Turn off phone. Next day phone won't turn on. Hold power and vol down says no battery power. Leave it charge for hrs. Won't turn on. Finally it turns on. I notice battery going down 1% every 10 minutes or less. Not right. Just sitting there.
Then I notice it looses battery % even while charging. % went down. Now when I try to charge it don't work. It powers on by itself. Says connect charger. Shuts off. While later it powers on again and keeps repeating this every so often.
Also when it was on once, it opened calendar even with me not touching it. It would like open it and go to home screen by itself. This after a factory reset.
Now it won't charge. Just does the above turn on then off every so often.
I am clueless what's going on. I wonder if I must get another phone which cost $25. They send anything. All used crap non hd phones. Qlink is a lifeline program thing.
Install android n, of that doesn't entirely solve it, get an unofficial high capacity battery.
Found the original charger and cable. Now when I charge you see the big battery with dots under it when the phone is off. So that's good. Why don't you see this with other chargers?
Battery now seems to work and hold the charge. I don't get it.
I don't think the phone can update to any newer then what's on it now. It's 4.something. Nothing of 5.0 when you check for updates. I think the phone is too weak for 5 at good performance but I don't know.

I think he meant installing a custom ROM. There's currently one Cyanogenm... Lineage OS 14.1 for the Galaxy S2. It is based on Android 7.1. If you are curious, check out this link: https://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=68771297
Nice to hear that your problem seems to be solved! I am a little bit surprised, as I often used different chargers without problems.
Why won't it hold the charge long?
With official cable and charger and batter it came with from lifeline program it looses full battery while powered off in like 3 days. And gone from 94% to 87% in less then 30 minutes.
What's going on?
Then one week it'll be fine.
Me too, i have the same problem too , and I'm charging my phone almost 4 times in a day
