Hey all,
I have a 16GB sd card in my phone. I am however running extremely low on space.
I understand android allocates about 4GB of the SD for the rom and whatnot... but I cannot seem to find out what is taking up this 8GB of "other" on my memory.
When I go look for things to delete, I dont see anything. I only have about 1.2 GB of pics.
Any ideas?
I've attached a picture below to show what im talking about.
-nvm- i figured it out.
Re: Phone Storage "Other" Full?
I'm having the same problem, how's your app storage mine has 4.10gb that I don't know what's using it

thatotherguy,
I just pulled my SD card, then used ES file explorer to browse through what was on the phone storage.
it turns out my previous rom (meanrom) stored all the OTA updates (about 600 megs a piece) every time.
i ended up deleting those OTA updates since I just upgraded to meanbean.
What about your app storage? How much is yours using?

My coworker is stock rooted gingerbread with a 32GB sd card (with 25gb still available for use). He's been that way for about 2 months now, and uses stock camera and gallery.
For some reason now, his pics aren't saving. I just tried myself with his phone, and the pic was saved to ext_sd/dcim/... I saw it in the folder using root explorer. Within 5 min, the pic was replaced with the triangle error sign.
Any thoughts?

Possible bad sd card. If its from ebay, it may be a fake 32 gb. Test the card with H2testw.

My thoughts exactly! I hate eBay, and that is where he got it (for cheap... Go figure ). I didn't know there were cards that read 32 but were only 8. It makes sense since he has used 6gb of space (and we all know 8gb isn't really 8gb)
Thanks

This makes me crazy. Why do they claim 8gb when there is not even 5gb usable? Be honest, say 5gb so we are able to gauge what we are getting. At least when you get an SD card almost all of it is there.
You forgot 2 gb internal storage for apps..yes its not full 8 gb ..its 7 point something but it never is.

It is the same reason for your hdd on your pc. The drive does have 8gb total but some of it is used up by the system's OS. Your usable space is actually 5.5gb with 1.3gb being used for apps. Any storafe medium does this. If you notoce on sd cards it may say 16gb but the user only has access to 14 gb

-sigh- because there really is 8gb of memory and they would be lying if they said 5gb. Think about it; all tech companies list the memory as the total amount of internal memory, not just available memory. If Samsung had a guilty conscience and said the galaxy player had 5gb, how could you compare to the iPod, that still said 8gb? There really is 8gb, but only 5gb available. Life tends to not be perfect.

System storage is for apps..some aps can be instaled on sd (usb) but you can move and them to system..be happy that SGP has a lot of system memory..i had phone with just 200mb of system memory and 8 gb card and that was nightmare.

but what is the different if i have 2 GB of system storage and 5 GB of usb storage?i prefer that it will be 7 GB of storage that apps will be installed because right now when i install an app it takes place in the system storage and the usb storage i think that it just make things more complicated.

Most apps can not be instaled on usb storage so you want be able to install them at all with out it ..also almost all aps have some librarys and they all go to system storage..also dalvic cache is on system storage..and every app that is on usb storage you can move it to system..just go to menage aplications in settings ..click on app and click on move to device

Just buy a 64gb MicroSD and swap the internal with the external, then you'll have 64gb for apps to be installed on.
Simple fix.

Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I717 using Tapatalk 2
Yes I want to swap my external sd as internal sd, So I can have much bigger space on my phone. As you know the phone recognizes only internal memory as phone storage not the Sd card. I saw a video toturiol on YouTube about Galaxy S3 but I'm looking for SGH-1717.

Thats the ticket Brad.....
Based on that script, it moves the extent of what the OS will allow.
System data cannot be moved, but application data can.
Even then, some apps will not run from external storage....
Good find .....g
Swap External w/ Internal. Success!!

I hope this helps.
I gave my evo lte to my wife after I got the HTC ONE, before i gave to her i did a factory reset and also wiped the internal storage thru recovery and now its only showing 2GB of storage, how do I get the rest back?
Wipe cache, cache/delvik, data, system, internal, and external. That's what always works for me.

So I will have to wipe everything you said and reflash the rom start from scratch
Look in T/B and see what storage says.
Why does your total b4 apps say 2 gig?
Phone storage is not internal storage, per se. Look down lower, you'll see internal, then external last.

There is something wrong with the vold file that tells the phone which memory is which.
Download this and replace the one you have, in system / etc /
Back up current vold file
Copy and paste there
Set permissions
And reboot

How does this get corrupt?
I'm going to clean install Beans 17 and use the sd card swap option; however, I'm trying to figure out what precautions I should take or what I should do to prepare and not lose data. I copied all my card over to my PC.
Should I delete everything on the card now or just let it on there and complete the swap?

As long as you have everything backed up, and there are no instructions telling you to have a empty SD card when you set up Beans with SD swap, you should be fine. I don't think having it full or empty will cause issues either way. Just make sure you read all the instructions and info on SD Swap in Beans thread.

Hey guys, I'm running Beans 17 with sd swap and I've been installing all kinds of apps with no problem but I noticed that the memory is being sucked up from the sd card and not the internal memory where I have 30 gigs. Weird, because without sd swap apps are downloaded into the internal memory and with swap downloaded to external sd where the measly internal memory is now. Kinda thought everything will be downloaded to internal all the time. How is everyone elses downloads going?

Thats supposed to be how it works. It is supposed to trick your phone into thinking your external is your internal I believe.

Let me clarify. If you go to applications manager, it only shows memory equal to your phone memory; however, for the new user, we'd think it'd show whatever is left on your sd card--now that your sd card is "internal" memory. So, instead of it saying I have 30GB left, it says I have like 1 GB left out of 11...or whatever the total is...
If I go to storage under settings, it shows phone storage as 64 and sd storage as whatever the phone storage amount is.

What I was getting at was that it tricks the phone, and the app market, into installing into the external card by making the external show up as internal to the app that are being installed. Thats my understanding of how it works and seeing as how i have never used it I know nothing of how it shows up just the general principle behind it and why it works the way it does. I may be completely wrong too, thats how I have seen it explained.
