I have tried a few times getting this answered, but never actually got an answer. I'm on an Alltel Smart plan, vzw has not engulfed the Alltel stores in our area. I've seen in posts that other members have gotten them to work on other networks, Alltel included, and I was just wondering how the whole process works? I've tried just switching it out with my current plan. The calls and text work, but not the data. Do I have to call vzw to unlock the sim card and that's all, or is there something more to it? I've looked and looked, and all I see is that it's possible, but not how to do it exactly. You can tell me it's possible to travel to the moon, but until you tell me how to build a rocket, I will never get there.
I don't think the data will work with alltel.
You can give Alltel a call and see what they say
The posts here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1115840 suggest that it is possible, which I couldn't see why they wouldn't since the CDMA should still work, but I tried it once before and got nothing. I'm just curious if unlocking the SIM card would do it, or what I do have to do to get it to work.
I'm on an Alltel plan and I had no trouble activating the thunderbolt on my plan.

Did you have data working on it? What did you do to get it working? Was it unlocked, or did that not matter since the SIM is only used by the 4G?
I'm going to have to go in extra early to work and phone it in, since my current phone is dead, and I want to have as much info as possible going into it.
Everything works just fine. The plan has nothing to do with the service you get from your phone. When Verizon bought Alltel they bought their towers as well so everything that worked with Alltel was transferred to Verizon.

Tried phoning it in, to no avail. They asked for the MEID number. I thought it was the same as the EMEI number but wasn't sure so I played dumb. Got me nowhere since they couldn't find the model number of the TBolt in their system. And since the Desire's Number starts off A100 and the TBolt's starts off HT12, I can't pass it off as a desire? And they seem to be rather persistent on it being an alltel phone...
If your trying to activate this on at&t it will never work. The radio is a totally different band than the Verizon network.

Thanks for clearing that up. I had no idea..... The desire sim will not work in the t bolt. I don't see how the t bolt could ever work on Alltel without being able to activate it with a sim in it. Call Verizon and talk to them about it. They should be able to transfer your account to Verizon no problem and send you a sim so you can activate the phone.

Alltel, which you have verified was working on Alltel. They just keep giving me the runaround on activating it since it's not an Alltel phone.

The desire does not have a sim since it is only 3g capable.
You said earlier that you had your tbolt working on your alltel plan.
I don't want to switch to verizon.
Don't you love how people state that they have done something and do not provide a link or info to backup what they said could be done? People, if you say that you got something to work where others have not. Use a little common courtesy and provide some info. Otherwise you are either misleading or teasing some one for no good reason at all.

All i did was call Verizon and had my plan from Alltel grandfathered over. How freaking hard is that to do? Is it that hard that a guide is really necessary? He will need a sim for his t bolt and the only way to get one is to have Verizon give him one.

You nor anyone ever said that you grandfathered over to vzw. It is not my plan, it is my parents and as they prefer to stay with alltel since they are cheaper, I don't really have that option.
As the post title says, I need to get the phone ACTIVATED on alltel, not grandfathered into a new plan. I've had the phone and text working on it before, I just needed assistance on getting the data to work on it if possible.
Posts here on the boards state that there are tbolts activated on alltel, but none state HOW. And since there is a sim card involved, that is all I'm trying to figure out. Is it possible as others' posts' suggest, or am I just sol until my contract expires in a few months?
I couldn't get the t bolt to activate without the sim. It will show a no sim error on the lockscreen and won't let data through. That is at least what I experienced. I would try talking to reps on Verizon and see what you can do because I bet if you get the right person on the line they will figure something out.

Thank you. If I can get data to work, it is preferable, and since I was told in the first link I posted that a lot of members here had it, I thought I would try it. But I haven't gotten anywhere with anyone .
That link doesn't seem to work, it's error'ing out on me. I guess I'll just have to settle for call and text for awhile. Thanks tho, and sorry if I came off a bit harsh.
No big deal. The only way I've seen ( I have googled his by the way) is by getting your plan grandfathered over to Verizon.
You can't do everything without the sim in a t bolt.

Hi i just got my rezound in the mail from Ebay. I'm trying to activate it by dialing *228 but it keeps saying on the screen "sim card activated updating roaming capabilities" or something like that. Every other phone all i had to do was dial *228 and follow the instructions then put in my number and done. What am i doing wrong?. By the way it has a Sim card that came with it and clean esn. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The SIM has to be provisioned to your account. Either call Verizon, or take it to a Verizon store.

yep. the sim needs to be programmed with your account info. you should be able to call 611 and then tell them to activate the phone.
I tried 611 and *611 only get that fast busy signal .any other numbers to try?

i have been told the 228 doesn't work for 4g sim cards, only normal phones without sims i think not sure.
You need to call the Verizon 1 (800) # to activate the sim card. You can also give the rep the IMEI on the phone. Turn phone off and then back on and it should automatically activate.
i could be wrong but i believe you may need a new sim card from either verizon store or there site..they are free. i had this problem when it tried reactivating my rezound. i was told the 4g sim was a one shot deal and were good for one activation. someone correct me please if im wrong.

It may be the they are only good for one person and can't be transferred. Never really thought about it. You can, however, move the SIM between phones as much as you want once it's activated.
Thanx everyone. I called Verizon from a landline and got it activated in minutes.

I've noticed on mine that I could have a strong roaming signal on Verizon, but if the phone even catches a whiff of a Sprint signal, it tries to switch to Sprint and data is lost. When it's doing that, roam only fixes it as you've noticed.

THat's what I am on. It seems it was better on 21085 and 21086. You can use QPST to change them, but again, I'm too lazy to do it.
Well if his phone roams fine in roam only mode, then the prl is fine.
What's likely happening is what Coal said. If your phone is on automatic, it tries it's hardest to stay on sprint at all times. Even if the signal is very very low, it will try to stay on it at all costs. Of course, we all know that's not how it should be, as that just kills the battery. I don't know if this is a rom issue or just a phone issue. You could try flashing back to a GB rom and see if it's any better.

It may be trying to stay on sprint but I literally was out of the sprint network for 3 hours and had no service, none. So I am leaning towards a ROM glitch or maybe radio but I dont know much about the radio part.

Maybe is is Android 4.0+ or the new firmware because I used to travel through a bad spot on the way to work and woudl roam, for a while now I just loose signal now even though I am on automatic.
Hey guys I have been rooted for a while now but on Sunday I crack flashed a bunch of 4.2 roms and lost connection to 4g. I have replaced my sim card and re flashed the radios but I am now stumped. When I get home I will probably Odin back to stock but if you guys have any suggestions I would appreciate it.

go into settings/more settings/mobile networks/network mode, then toggle lte/cdma and see if it brings 4g back up. If that don't work you can try a factory reset, still nothing then odin back to stock.
Yeah tried all of that. Looks like I have a date with Odin tonight.

Restored via odin and still no 4g. I'm at a loss. Could I have burned the 4g capabilities?
did you get a new sim from vzw? i know you said that you "replaced" it but was that with a new or used sim? also might want to power device off and make sure the sim is seated properly.
also are you getting 3g, 1x, or any data at all?
I finally got it guys thanks.

how did u fix it?
After all of that fighting the system, changing the sim, reloading stock the sim holder is sort of wide and the spring forces it just a bit off of the contacts I adjusted it just a bit rebooted and got 4g back. Always check the stupid things that it could be first. Lesson learned for the 10th time. Though I checked it multiple times before resorting to a system restore so who knows what caused it.

I was being a dumbass and dialed *228 thinking it will update my PRL and improve my signal. Immediately after programming, I was limited to 3g connection. I lost 4g/LTE connection. I fixed this by going to the Verizon store and asked them for a new SIM card, which was free of charge.
*228 is for 3g phones ONLY. Not for the GS4, unless you like 3g connection speeds...
It is a relatively simple solution, but it can also be easily avoided. Save yourself the trouble, and don't make the same mistake I did.

When you have cable TV and nothing seems to be on you get bored. When you get bored you try to improve your cell phones data connection. When you try and improve your data connection you use *228 when you use *228 you limit you data speeds to 3g and it requires a new sim card. Avoid using *228, ditch your cable TV and sign up for for direct tv. Lol

I made the same mistake too. I waited a few days and no 4G/LTE came back. I tried going to the local corporate store and they wouldn't even talk to me as I was running a custom recovery & rom (on MDK bootloader!). I went to one of the retail stores and they helped me out with a new SIM card.

another way to get prl back is to clean flash a rom and the system automatically does a prl update on boot if other steps dont work
Sent From My Hyperdriven S4
I did this a month or two ago and lost my 4g. What I did was contact Verizon Support (via web chat but you could call them). I told them I accidentally dialed *228 and lost 4g and asked them if they would manually push a PRL update to my phone. The technician had me power off my device and when I turned it back on all was well, had 4g again.
This saved me the awkwardness of taking my phone into a store where they would see it was rooted with a custom ROM.
Sadly, found this thread too late. I dialed *228 and had to go get a new sim. At least no questions were asked at VZW.
Yeah . . I did it too lol
If you want to change your connection or update your prl's there's a code you can typee in the phone dialer to bring up a hidden menu.
In the dialer type *#*#4636#*#* and then go to phone information and scroll down and change the option to CDMA/LTE and that always works for me.
I've heard of a few people that this hasn't worked with, but other wise it has always worked for me.
