[Q] Photon wont start after lcd replacement - Motorola Photon 4G

Hi,
My nephew smashed his lcd and digitizer and the back camera cover. The phone was still functional, i.e send and recieve calls/mms/data and so on. I ordered a new complete front panel(lcd, digitizer and frame) and a new back cover. I followed a youtube guide and was able to take it apart and reassemble. Now, the thing wont turn on, when I plug it to the wall charger it just shows green led. When connected to PC it's recognized as a MICROBOOT and shows grey led light. I took a friend's battery and tried it, nothing. My battery was fully discharged it seems, it also seems like the phone wont charge the battery. I tried volume down and/or volume up with power, nothing.
Is it fully bricked? What can I further check?

Smacks of bad connections on reassembly.
Oops on the 'thanks' as I fat fingered it. .

[Q] buying parts

hey guys,
i just bought a broken atrix off ebay. i just got it in the mail and took it apart and the phone is missing the flex cable for the digitizer. so i ordered a new digitizer. i noticed its blinking red so im guessing its bricked? but the lcd lights up but nothing shows up. do i need to buy an lcd screen as well?
no one has any ideas at all?
The red light could just mean that the battery is going dead. Have you charged it?

battery still had charge, well at least that is what the guy told me. but wouldn't a logo or low battery symbol appear if that was the case? instead of the backlight turning on and black screen?
Well, could mean that the LCD is no good. Usually, if it is bricked it would show an error message. So, if nothing is being shown then it might be the display. I would put it on the charger regardless. Does the notification light go on when you plug it in while the phone is off? It should flash green and then either go to yellow or stay green.

Does the phone sync to your computer via USB? When putting in the motherboard angle the usb ports first so they are fully seated. Then make sure the bottom ribbon cable (LCD) is fully seated on the motherboard, you will have room to lift it up a little. Use a razor blade to push up on the cable to make sure it is fully seated and make sure you hear a snap when push down the board. Also screw down the backplate where the LCD ribbon is located. Then plug in the phone with the battery out. If it's bricked you will still get a failure to boot screen. There are also problems with the board that could cause video problems. It's best to have a few parts phones of the same model to find the real problem.

yeah the led turns green when i plug in the charger but i tried a hard reset (the vol down and power) the led flashes green but still get a blank black screen. i usually buy new parts all together just in case but the guy i bought it from said he tried to fix it himself but ended up ripping off the flex cable from the digitizer so i think the lcd is new as well. at least that is what i hope.

i know, i already disassembled the phone to assess the damage. is there a way to know if the lcd is damaged or faulty visually without being plugged into the phone?

Unbrick phone part: Rapidly Flashing Red Light.

Hello all.
This guide will help you if you have:
A phone that will not turn on unless you plug it in and even then only an LG sign shows up followed by either blank/ rapidly flashing red light.
to my knowledge, what happened to put the phone in this state is the battery died while you were flashing a rom or something as such and the phone got confused on if it should be in charge mode or not.
being that the phone has a sealed battery, it is not as easy to pull out the battery as it is on other phones.
Fortunately for us, it is not difficult at all to unplug the battery!
REQ: torx screw driver that will fit but NOT STRIP the screws at the bottom of the phone.
Small phillips screw driver.
**I suggest charging the phone for a good 10 minutes before starting this. just to make sure it has a charge.
Step 1: unscrew the two screws at the bottom of the phone CAREFULLY!
Step 2: with your nails carefully pry up the back cover (inspect the phone carefully and identify the back cover from the rest of the phone.) off starting from the bottom of the phone.
Step 3: peel back the blue tape on the connector and remove the two screws.
Step 4: carefully pry up the connector from the top.
Step 5: plug back in and try powering on. By this point you should know if it worked and you can start putting the phone back together.
This guide is not the best (My first) but if you have any questions send me a message.
Good luck with your phones!
One of the first official LGOG teardown! Looks easier than expected..
@exemplarmusik sent from his LG - E970 ya dig?!
Awesome job, man. should come in handy for me at some point I am sure. I am curious though, those internals look identical to the Nexus 4's (as I guess we should expect) and I know the battery is glued down with the Nexus 4, so is that the case with our LGOG as well?
Yeah. The battery is glued in. I dont see an issue replacing it though. maybe a heat gun to losen up the glue and you should be good.
And yeah, it is very easy to open up.
This would have helped me last week. Oh well, got a replacement device and a free LG headset for my trouble.

I think it would only say that if unlocked, then you have N4 bootloaders.
I had this fast flashing "brick"-like issue, but after I let my phone cool, I just held power and vol-up and my phone went straight to the boot loader.

Damn, I didn't think it'd be that easy to take it apart. I wonder if it'd be possible to stick a Qi wireless charger pad in there, like the Nexus 4.
First of all, thanks for the guide. :good:
Here is what caused this to happen on my phone:
(black screen, flashing red light)
With phone off and charger plugged in you should be able to press power for a couple of seconds and it will show the charging progress. When you unplug the charger and press power you should see nothing unless you hold it long enough to power up the phone. Problem was that no matter how long you waited after unplugging the charger you could press power and see the progress ::what::
That causes the battery to drain, completely if left alone for a couple of days resulting in, you guessed it, black screen and flashing red light. After leaving it plugged in for 4-5 hours it regained a full charge and was fine.
This did not occur when phone was on while charging. Needless to say, I exchanged the phone. Hope this helps.
Don't assume you have any other pictures
I was considering trying to steal the signal amplifier and the filter from this and put in n4 ... and chance you got any shots of those in the optimus g ?
I still cant get mine to turn on, I unhooked the battery, still nothing. I hold the power it goes to the lg screen then nothing. I can hold power and volume up and nothing happens. Does anybody have a idea, I want my phone back.
Thanks
HELP!
My phone somehow will not turn on or charge! I have tried multiple chargers and outlets, and my phone will not charge or get the red light signaling that it is... There is no damage to the phone other than a small crack done a couple months prior. This happened very suddenly, the phone just ran out of batteries then stopped charging... is it possible to find the same battery as this and replace it?? My phone company said LG would not accept it because of the small crack on the front screen corner. Any help would be very greatly appreciated, really dont have the money to buy a phone off contract...

My phone is same yours. you plug and unplug somes times untill red light flash then push power button. goodluck
Wow looks like there are connectors on the back to go to the inside of the back cover... I wonder if this is compatiable with the orbe!... if not it should be easy to use old Palm Touchstone parts to make it charge wirelessly.
I have the sprint version I am hoping it has the same connectors... You guys see the two prongs on the back cover adn the metal places they attach to??

Those prongs are for connecting to the antenna in the back cover, not a wireless charger.

I could use some help guys, if this thread isn't too old. I've searched high and low to the answer here and nothing is working. I've tried download mode, fastboot, recovery, reset, holding power down, plugging it in and unplugging it. I've pulled the plate off of the battery, tried LGNPST, drivers, etc. No go on anything.
The phone is still dead, and will not turn on. The best I've gotten is a solid red light after holding the power button for 15-20 seconds. Then after about 3-5 seconds it resumes flashing (alternating between the red light and the key buttons). If I continue holding the power button down it will repeat this, showing solid red and then reverting to flashing.
I can not get the screen to display anything, not even the charging animation, and none of my computers will even recognize the device. I've been messing with it all day and I'm stuck. If anyone can help me, at all, please do. I hate going to Sprint. Anything but that, please.

me too.
I was doing the LGNPST and it was stuck at 67% for 15 min so i unplugged and the phone did nothing so I turned it off from recovery and nothing. no power only the power flashes red for a few seconds after pressing.
I am out of town now but if I can get it to turn back on I will send it back since I just received it today.
Unfortunately, my phone is now completely unresponsive. I have had it plugged in to the original wall charger for over two hours and still no power. If i hold down the power button for about 15 seconds while plugged in the red light will blink once every second until i let go. However, if I unplug it and do the same the light will not come on. I'm about to disassemble my brick and see if the battery pull will help any.
Any success stories in detail would be appreciated. Plan B is to send it off to Mobiletechvideos.
Edit: Moving on to plan B....thanks.

I did this trick a couple weeks ago when my phone stopped responding. Could only get flashing light while plugged in, and no response when not plugged in. Eventually while plugged in I could get to the bootloader, but could not get to recovery. This fix worked for me, though it may not work for you. You will need a T5 torx (star) screwdriver. Good luck.

Simple replace lcd and digitizer gone wrong, phone dead

I replace the lcd and digitizer, closed phone up, phone was booting up normally, htc white screen, nils business sense loading, and then nothing, screen went black. Battery is charged, and I have tried three others. When I hold the power button down, the phone vibrates on start up, but that is it, nothing else. Plug it into a computer, nothing, does not recognize it. Plugging it into a charger, the orange led is on for a few seconds, and then goes out. I checked the ribbon cables, and reseated, no dice. I even tried the old screen hardware, nothing.
Did the phone just die? Did the new lcd and digitizer do this? This is not my phone, I was just trying to help out my brother after he broke his phone. What should I do next?
Edit - If the phone vibrates while powering on, it is definitely not dead.
Any chance that you can get into the bootloader? If so, do a factory reset
Have you tried a different battery? The light coming on/off when plugged in makes me think either a short, bad battery, or something got shorted out on initial boot after you operated on it.
Good luck!

I can't get into anything, the screen is black, nothing more. I have tried 3 batteries, all of them good. I am stuck.
Help, lol....
I wish I could help, in other news, the Nexus 4 has been reduced to $249 on the playstore.

I had that issue during my replacement. Have no fear... Check that the ribbon cables are evenly reinserted andddd that the protective orange tape that was on these cable connections is put back. Problem solved. Shower me in champagne.

Tried that several times, even put the screen in so it was not grounded, no good. Tried the old screen, not go on that one either. I kinda gave up, maybe the new screen was shorted? I sent it back to the company, and got my money back. I then just purchased a cheap used phone and replaced it. I am not sure what happened?.....
In saying that it still turns on...did the screen show all black before trying to replace it...if not then something in not reconnected properly...it can be tricky so go over every little deatail including the sticky tape...make sure everything is aligned in the correct spot

[Q] Black screen, no charge

Hi everyone,
I purchased a used AT&T Note 1 ( i717 ) with some cosmetic defects. Ordered new parts from various vendors. Everything on the phone worked okay prior to repairs. I replaced the front bezel and put in a new screen with glass. The screen and glass came as one unit. It was almost $200. After the minor phone surgery, which took about two hours, the phone power on. The Samsung logo shows for about a second, the the screen goes black. Phone rings when I call it. All the buttons work, but nothing shows on the screen. I can put it into download mode, and the screen displays the download mode on it. When I try to go into recovery mode, the screen is blank. Also, with the phone powered off, when I plug in a charger, all I get is an image of an empty battery with a circle in it. I ordered a new battery, and the same thing happens. Again, screen only stays on in download mode, and battery won't charge when the phone is off. Please help. I'd hate to think all the money and time spent was for nothing. Thanks.

More courage than I to do the work. All I know is you are not the first to have this problem. If you ran a search on screen replacement, you would most likely find this out and the solution.
Good luck.

Go back and check the ribbon cables and the pin connectors. These are always troublesome and very easy to damage, the video cable in particular. Another thing to check is that the on/off button is not obstructed in some way by the new bezel.
Lastly, do you have an external charger for your battery? If the new battery is factory fresh you may need to charge it prior to putting it in the device just to check that the USB/charging port is working.
Good luck.

Thanks for your replay. Checked the cables and the switch a few times, and it didn't correct the issue. I ordered a battery charger for Samsung batteries. Should be here Friday. I honestly believe it's a battery stats issue. At least that's the impression I get reading other posts, but I can't get into the recovery mode to reset unless there's a way to ADB without a working screen. Thanks again.
Phew... The external battery charger did the trick. I removed the battery from the phone, and fully charged it using a Hyperion Dual charger. Re-inserted the battery, and turned the phone on. At first, phone turned on with a black screen, but once it booted up, I swipe unlocked the phone. The screen flickered for a few seconds, and voila... phone is again fully functional. Thanks everyone for very thorough, and insightful posts. Xda-developers.com Rocks!

Phone not powering on after screen replacement

Hi everyone, this is my first post on XDA.
My S3 had a broken screen, so I wanted to get it fixed. The repair shops quoted quite a hefty price for the repair (even though it was just the glass that was, not the digitiser) so I bought a kit to repair it myself. The repair went smoothly, and I didn't need to do anything to the actual LCD display. However, when the repair was finished, the phone would not turn on. I assumed it had a flat battery (it was on 5% when I started the repair) so I plugged the phone in. The phone's LED lit in an orange colour, that i've never seen before. So I left it for 1 hour, then I came back. The phone still had an orange LED lit. The phone would not turn on. I kept the plug in and took the battery out and the phone vibrated. Then I plugged the phone back in and a red LED lit. I've left it like that for 2 hours, and the phone would still not turn on. I plugged it back into my PC and the LED lit green. The phone would still not turn on but the PC showed "GT-I9300" as a Media Device in the File Explorer but it didn't have anything on it. The phone now displays a green LED whenever I plug it into any normal charger. When I unplug it, the power button makes the phone vibrate when I press it.
Please could you help me? I need a phone.
--
Jonathan
Red led is charging, green led is charged. Orange led.. Never known it to use orange so i assume its a fault.
It does seem like the phone is booted up and running yet the screen shows nothing. Possibly halted in post?. Have you double checked your work for loose connections etc?. What are the chances of the replacement being faulty?.
I wish I stole my HTC M9.
I didn't actually remove or do anything to the LCD, so it can't be lose connections etc.
I left it overnight on the green LED and it still isn't turning on, plugged in or not.
I'm going to call Samsung to see if they can fix anything or if I need a replacement phone (its about 3 years old so not under warranty though)
It isn't turned on, I tried calling the phone and it went straight to voicemail. And I get no startup sounds, nothing.
--
Jonathan
Samsung will charge if it's out of warranty.
So what exactly did you do if you didnt disassemble it?
I wish I stole my HTC M9.
Going to send it off to Samsung. I literally removed the screen's glass and placed a new one on.
Can you do that without damaging the digitiser? I would have thought they'd be "married" in some way or other ie glue.
I wish I stole my HTC M9.
