Adaway: Finding Hosts for Specific App - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi. Im using Adaway on my phone, but it interferes with one app, Viki, that I want to use. I want to add the hosts that Viki uses to my whitelist, but a google search on that topic is fruitless. I was wondering if there was a way to track which hosts an app is using by logging such information. I don't even know if this is possible, another app perhaps? Thanks for your help.

How to use ad block plus list on atrix?

Adfree completely blocks some of my videos, so I am wondering if there is a way to use the adblock plus list to the atrix.
Yes, I mean adblock plus on the desktop.

Give ROM toolbox's built-in adblocker a try. I have no issues with it. If it's not enough for you:
Basic adblocking uses a list of host URLs to deny or nullify or whatever. Google around for the location of the hosts file on your computer and your phone and consolidate blocked URLs.

[Q] Internet filter that filters all apps that access the internet.

Is there an app (it doesn't have to be from the play store or nook shop since I am rooted) that filters all apps that can use the internet? For example, ezPDF Reader has "Direct Web Browsing" that's supposed to be used to make getting to web pdf's easier. But it can access any internet site. This would be filtered as well as actual browser apps like Chrome and Firefox. I was thinking that root would come into play here. Since I am rooted, I would be easier for an app to access stuff like this, right? Anyway, is there an app that can filter out specified content from any app that accesses the internet, preferably not using a VPN since I am going to be using it in conjunction with a web monitoring app and a VPN may hide history from it.
I know avast in the play store has a firewall (root). Never used it myself so I don't know how much control it gives you
Not exactly sure what you meant.
If you want to enable internet for specific apps only, you can use Avast (with the whole anti virus thing) or AFWall+(more options regarding firewall)
If you want to enable only specific websites, i'm also searching but haven't found anything yet
You could BLOCK specific sites by adding them to the hosts file (via adblock for example or just edit the file) and redirect them to localhost...this will prevent the connections to specific domains.
Not exactly knowing what you want, too!
Do you mean that you would like to download app or file from website restricted in your area?

[APP][4.0.3+ & GB][XPOSED] UnbelovedHosts

Xposed hosts blocker.
This app blocks host names of advertising, malware, spam, phone-home etc sites. You could import "hosts"-files by given urls.
With this app you have no more to alter the /etc/hosts file on the system partition, which was also a problem on some devices (eg Nexus 7) because changes where reverted after reboot.
Technical:
Name resolution request are answered with "No address associated with the hostname". This is even better than a common hosts file with redirects to 127.0.0.1, because no connection attemp follows. For logging of hostnames is no tcpdump needed!
Browser:
If you want to block content of websites, you have to use a browser app which does not tunnels everything through a proxy! This is because the proxy does also the name resolution. Negative examples I found: Google Chrome does not work.
UPDATE: XDA described how to use Chrome: DNS-based Ad Blockers are broken on latest Chrome versions, so here’s a fix
I'm using Dolphin with Jetpack, which works fine for me. Some more info in post #47. Opera Mobile Classic works also, see post #389
If you want to use Firefox you need Network Preferences Add-on, see hint of @ag43 here: post #297 - OR just open website "about:config" and delete content of "[network.]proxy.http", see hint of @TheClownDE here: post #483
This app will NOT be release in the Play Store because of Google's policy. Other apps like AdAway or AdFree where removed in the past... But you could anyway donate in the Play Store and/or on my website.
Limitiation:
No support of native querying binaries.
Donation:
You support this app!
Some hosts file import/export/sharing options
Logging of not denied host names
Blacklist/Whitelist/Patterns (Regex)
Timed download: 150 minutes after reboot, then every 4 days
Permissions:
RECEIVE_BOOT_COMPLETED: set timer for download
ACCESS_NETWORK_STATE: download only via W-Lan
INTERNET: downloading of files
WAKE_LOCK: don't sleep while dl/import
EXTERNAL_STORAGE: export/import files
This app connects only to the websites you see for downloading hosts files!
Important:
This app needs the Xposed Framework. The framework requires root access for installation. Don't forget to enable the module in Xposed. You can grab it here: Xposed Installer

So, whats the difference between this and AdAway ?
So your adblocker app got ads? I'll need to donate in order to remove the ad?
That sounds funny

Hehe, if you want is say this way, Yes.
If you look at the screenshot with logfiles, you could see FolderSync, Feed+ and Smart AppLock. They all are pro/donate/premium versions...
And I think it is okay to get more features which are not really needed, but nice

How about GB support @defim ?
Opening settings seem to crash the app
Tryin to get into settings gets me a FC. Also weren't the adblocker removed also from xposed few weeks back as the dev said something like it's going against the devs, practically taking a possibility to earn any money for their free apps?

Have you a logcat of the fc?
In fact this is not a add-blocker, it blocks hostnames. And as you can see on the screenshot at the OP, in my case most of them are tracking sites
Btw, my 1st app had admob included. Was a big §%"$, not got any cent by it because no one touches adds...
Another thoughts: All "free" apps should be removed from Play Store, because nobody gets non-free ones

Buddy don't get me wrong I do not wanna start even to argue about it. I was in adds in marketing in my previous job. And my stance is to allow ad blockers as to in my case it's beneficial to the company with the ads as well. I never ever bought anything cuz or from an ad..they loose money if I click basically.... But this is a discussion for somewhere else.
Just wanted to give you a headsup that this might be an issue so you might get ready for some explanations.

@PAGOT: Thanks, FC fixed. It appeared only in english version because of malformed strings.xml - did not show in with my language settings.
Adblocker: Yea, another place would be better to discuss. As i used modified /etc/hosts before, this app makes depending add/tracker/malwar etc companies no difference.
The app on xposed was removed by the developer itself, because he decided it so
Is there a way to add host sources to the main screen? (so I can update them by pressing them)
I've found a way to add the lists from sources but it doesn't save them so I have to copy the link and updating it this way make it very laborious.
@Blizzard22: Soon
Is rover.ebay blocked? Some host files block that site and it breaks important ebay email links.
If you are blocking anything rover.eBay please remove

When the unbelovedhosts module is active you cannot start the official chromecast app. It constantly force closes on starting it.
Looks good no issues yet please could you add the mother of all adblocking host to your list thanks in advance

I tried the app and its pretty cool! But somehow the website I'm visiting with firefox are not listed in the log, why? Btw.
would be possible to add IPs / hosts directly from the log to the blacklist? Or at least to make it copy & paste-able.
It doesnt work for me. Adaway also stopped working for me sometime ago... Dunno why.

Which is the best ad-blocking app for non-rooted android phone?

Hi fellas, I know this is an age-old question but there's seems to be scant information available on this. Let's share our knowledge to figure this out. This is the list I've come across during my short research:
Adblock Plus: Blocks only on Wi-Fi
Adguard: Removed from Play Store, anybody knows how it is?
Adaway: The best, but requires root.
These are the only mentionable ones I found. Do you guys know of anything better? Which is the best way to go for non-rooted device? Thanks ya'll.
i think you need to enable ad-blocking on your browser since you are not rooted cause you cannot apply system-wide blocking. some of the options are:
-AdBlock browser
-any browser that supports extensions like Firefox and then install adblock extension
-also these ones have adblock feature built inside: UCbrowser, Javelin, Dolphin, Maxthon, Naked Browser
good luck
Adguard Premium
I just installed Adguard app and it has a premium option that it claims will filter adds for applications as well.
Has anyone tried Adguard premium?

How to block in-app trackers?

I am searching for options how to block android in-app trackers.
Which trackers are used in specific app can be checked here: https://reports.exodus-privacy.eu.org/en/
For example:
https://reports.exodus-privacy.eu.org/en/reports/com.nordvpn.android/latest/
App NordVPN uses 5 trackers (Google Analytics, Google Tag Manager,...).
How is it possible to block these trackers on Android 9? In a browser with add-ons like uBlock Origin it is an easy job. Is it possible to do the same with Android applications?
- I was looking at adblocking apps like AdAway, which uses hosts file... Can I use this host file to block trackers used in apps?
- I was also looking at XprivacyLua, but it needs Xposed framewors, which does not work (yet) on Android 9.
- Do you know any other tool?
- Or is the only option to find alternative?
Using: Mido device, LineageOS 16 for MicroG (based on Android 9 Pie).
Thank you for help and greetings!
If someone else needs it, I got a lot of help in this AdAway thread, page 1413, 1414: https://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2190753&page=1413

So one option seems to be just adding domains to AdAway blocklist.
To do so:
zgfg said:
As pointed by the other user, you didn't list FQDNs but package names - with AdAway you cannot blacklist/whitelist some apps, only FQDNs (domains)
For AdAway you must have root, hence you can check from the logcat which domains were resolved by DNS and which TCP connections were established while your app is running.
Then add suspicious domains to your AdAway blacklist, restart the phone and test again, and analyze the log again if you still see the ads

@GuestK00285
Nobody needs an AD-Blocker app: all one has to do is to keep Android's system file /system/etc/hosts up-to-date. To edit this file root access is required.
