Has anyone received OTA updates after flashing a different ROM? - Nokia Lumia 920

Hello all,
Since OTA updates are beginning to be pushed out, I think this issue might deserve its own thread outside of the development thread.
Has anyone received OTA updates after they've flashed their phone to a different ROM over the original ROM?
I'm currently on my original RM-821_Polkomtel_Poland_VAR242600_v2_6_Black (059R079) ROM. I would like to flash it to an unbranded German or UK ROM, but I'm afraid that might prevent OTA updates.
Thanks in advance.

Flashing a ROM from a different product code does not affect the delivery of OTA updates. OTA updates will then be based on the newly installed ROM. Meaning if you flash unbranded German ROM you will get unbranded German ROM OTA updates

yup, I can confirm it because a few days back when I flashed the german Vodafone pre-portico rom, I got the german portico update. Was originally using EE UK firmware and flashing around to see which firmware is the most stable .
P.S: I later flashed back to EE firmware and also got the EE portico update, so flashing different ROMs does not screw up the OTA system.

You are a life saver.
So in the event that my phone needs to be repaired under warranty, will Nokia be able to tell that I've flashed my phone if I flash it back to my Polish ROM?
Thanks!

Not a problem : ) I just hope there isn't some sort of "flash counter" or something. I had an HTC HD2 and I was used to flashing all sorts of stuff on it. The Devs made it so that it was possible to return the phone to factory condition just in case.

+1, I flashed a few Roms then flashed pre portico EE rom and straight away found ota portico update. Have since gone back to CV_GB unbranded rom but still no portico update.

The only problem when you flash other ROM is that every time you backup your phone, it will show you the backup process, but really will not save the setting and app installed and every time you want to restore your phone, you may need to install and setup everything manually unless you have the original product code install in your phone. 100 %Tested.

Oh okay, I don't use the backup anyway except for text messaging. Is it safe to assume that text messaging will not be backed up as well?

I can't receive anything

strange, text messaging backup works even if I flash another rom (different product code). After restore, all my stuff is inside as usual...

the sms backup is not device specific.... it's synced with your live account...
I have the WP8's and all the SMS from both phone numbers are synced to both phones....

[Q] How exactly do I update from X10a 1.6(rogers, Canada) to 2.1?

Hi, I've seen so many threads now on this that I'm kind of confused. Can anyone tell me exactly what I need to do to update to 2.1? My phone is a X10a 1.6 on Rogers network in Canada.
Apparently rogers is releasing 2.1 tomorrow so unless u want to root just wait until Friday
Sent from my X10a using XDA App
Where did you get that info?
Waiting is the easiest thing. We're potentially so close to the update, you'd have to have a major issue to update with 'unsupported by Rogers' firmware at this point...IMO.
I suppose your right, if the update is in fact tomorrow then there really isn't a point in me doin anything but waiting. I just thought it would take rogers awhile to send out the update, Canada never usually gets anything else the world gets very quickly.

It's really hard to resist I know...up to you. There are tons of threads on it...no one that's done it seems to regret the decision but for me I have nothing wrong with my phone now...so i can wait
I don't believe that it will come out on Friday. I only hope. I have decided that I will do the root explorer method and change the code to Brazil generic unbranded x10a then do the update through pc companion if it does not come out byssunday. Very easy and simple method.
hi i need little clarification
so to flash 2.1 on your phone you need to root your phone first??

To flash to another country's verions of 2.1 yes, you'd need to root it first, debrand it second and then flash the update.
To install the update from Rogers you wouldn't need to do any of that.
Well you can root your phone with one click root or what ever the bleep its called and then install root explorer from the market or 4 shared and then open system folder then edit default.prop file and edit the country codes. There is another thread on that.
Then do update through pc companion (this is the same software that you will do update with once Rogers releases the update) all you are doing by editing the country code with root explorer is tricking pc companion into thinking you have a debranded Brazilian phone. After you do update it will not be rooted anymore cause the update wipes your phone clean.

WRONG. You don't need to be unlocked OR rooted OR debranded.
Once you put the phone into flash mode, you can flash any signed (official Sony) ROM, including the Global & Nordic generic ROMs (v2.1).
The bootloader hasn't been cracked so there are no custom ROMs (hence no 2.2) but official ROMs from around the world can still be used.
I flash my Rogers X10a a few hours after Nordic was released and a 2nd X10a once global came out. The only issue is that the Rogers APN information has to be entered in manually for 3G/3.5G/HSPA data.
Or you can do a flash but many ppl are scared to go that route as it requires a bit more effort.
My bad. I didn't key into flash part. Listen to the guy with two phones!

[Rogers]Rooted 2.3.3 via Xperia_Play_Release_Generic_UK

Hey, I'm on rogers in Canada and was having a hell of a time getting rooted 2.3.3 on my phone without unlocking the bootloader(no point in unlocking the BL for just root .... especially w/the warranty problems). I figured I'd give Working Root on 2.3.3 ! a try but had trouble finding the right firmware to downgrade to and when I tried to update OTA it kept failing after downloading and trying to install it (looked like it went all the way through the process but the phone would reboot and say "update failed").
1./ Did a clean install of the Xperia_Play_Release_Generic_UK.ftf (it's .184) with flashtool and then re-setup my apns to get 3g etc working. I downloaded the generic ftf off a thread on these forums but couldn't remember exactly which thread so I recompressed it and uploaded it to multiupload to make it a little easier to get all the needed files
2./ Rooted with Chainfire's Gingerbreak apk
3./ OTA update and it worked (before I did a clean install I was having the ota update fail, probably because I had removed a few system apps via root uninstall, I just made sure that all I did this time after the fresh install was root and then update)
Note on Gingerbreak: I've seen this exploit take 5 minutes or a few hours to grant root on devices. Be patient, if it's still hasn't worked try re-seating or swapping your memory card for a different one and try again. Also be sure you're on 2.3.2, SE patched gingerbreak in their release of 2.3.3.
[FAQ]
1./ I don't have ota updates available in my country, will this still work for me?
Answer: Yes, this installs the global firmware to your phone, after that your phone will look for global updates rather than carrier specific updates.

Answer
step 1./ google your carriers apn settings
step 2./ enter them in settings/wireless & networks/mobile network settings/Access Point Names (make sure you set up your mms apn if you want working mms as well, info for your carrier is available on google, that's where I found mine.)
step 3./ Profit
ncaissie said:
Yes you can use wi-fi. and Like I said OTA is safe it is the PC update that bricks.
Just follow those steps. It's easier than I expected.
Edit:
The things not mentioned in the OP is that you need to download a file manager to install the Gingerbreak. And you need to enable the “Unknown Sources” in the apps settings to install Gingerbreak.
After it roots it will reboot and you should see a new app called Superuser in your app list.
Then get Titanium Backup to uninstall thing you don’t want or move apps fully to the SD card. If you are not in the UK the BBC player is no good to you. I think there is a thread with a list of apps you can safely remove

You would have to find that out for yourself, it's in settings/about phone/Software Update/Update Now. If this says no updates available then I guess OTA updates aren't available in that region at the moment.

If i dont do a clean install...what about the apns? Will they stay too? In my own thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=14705145&postcount=4
FrAsErTaG said that i can choose to not flash the userdata. I already found the option within the Flashtool. Are my apns a part of the userdata or will they get overwritten/deleted anyway?
Edit: Forget everything. It worked
I didnt wipe anything or "clean" my system. I just did the downgrade. After that, i got 1 issue. I always got this message: "android.process.acore has stopped". Google said that this is an issue with synchronize the contacts, etc. But i didnt freak out I just installed GingerBreak, did the root, then the OTA, and after OTA everything was fine again. Now i have full rooted 2.3.3

My XPlay was originally purchased from Rogers. But since I've had it, I unlocked its network, flashed it with the Generic UK .184 firmware and Rooted it with GingerBreak v1.20. When I checked under "Settings\About phone\Software update\" and manually searched for an update, it was able to find it, download it and install it.
Sweet, Thanks

Using different countries stock rom and updates

Hi all,
Probably a simple question but I just want to be sure as I've not done this before.
I've flashed a stock from of a different country to where my phone is from. When I did a full restore it asked me which country I was in for updates. If I want updates for the stock rom when that country gets them (I flashed the UK stock rom so I want updates when the UK get them) do I set the country to the UK or does it not matter if I just set it as the country I live in?
Thanks in advance
I am using uk update via odin without any problem, so it should be fine.

Did you put your real country or the UK?
After the restore, the first time I hit check for update it asks for the country.
I put usa since i am living here so yes. and there is no problem at all.

[Q] Installing Official 4.1 without Kies or Root

I've got an unlocked I9100 running the official 4.0.4 rom on EE in the UK. I've read that the jelly bean update is now available, but the OTA update never seems to find anything for me. I've tried installing Kies, but for whatever reason, it just wont detect my phone....
So my question is this. Is there a way for me to install the update using Odin without having to root my phone? The reason I ask is that I have banking applications that refuse to run once the phone is rooted.
Thanks in advance!

The barclays app detects root access and wont start if it finds root. There are probably ways around it, but it was a pain getting the thing working in the first place!

All you need to do is use SU to block the app from gaining root privileges.
Just flash JB using ODIN, reboot into download mode again and flash Siyah kernel v6 beta4.
The kernel will give you root, cwm, cwm manager and SU. Whenever a app tries to access root you will have a option to allow or block.

So flashing to an official firmware will void my warranty?
yeap, as long as it's not from your region country (unbranded) or your carrier branded ROM (locked & branded).
If you have an unbranded, unlocked phone and you are from SPAIN, you are all good.
If not, you've modified your device against your warranty's advice.
You can also make a back up of your current ROM in case you have to claim warranty.

You can remove that triangle and your binary counter with triangle away.
Official ROMs won't cause any of that because they are samsungs officials.
And yes, as I said, you can flash your country / region / carrier ROM in the future and everything will look legit.
Warranty will try to see if you messed with your device in any kind, you just need to prove you didn't.

Actually no, I just don't feel like I want to reinstall everything because I can't do a proper backup since I don't want to root.
So let me recap this: I can flash the Spanish version without a full wipe, keep all my apps and data, flash the Nordic version when it comes available, still keep my apps and warranty without tripping the flash counter and receive official updates to the Nordic version through Kies.
Correct me if I am wrong.
EDIT: Oh, and by the way, I seem to have a sane chip

When nordic update rolls out you will have to flash it with odin, and only then you can update thru kies/ota.
If you flash ls8 you'll only get spain updates via kies/ota.
The easier way for you to get the right ROM for you is to back up your current ROM. When your country / region / carrier starts rolling the update you can restore thar ROM and update it via kies/ota.
Is your device unbranded or carrier branded?

Unbranded. So if I flash the nordic version on top of the Spanish one (with Odin ) I don't have to wipe at all at any point and my warranty will stay + I can then update the nordic version through kies (if this isn't the last update)
Your warranty will be voided as long as you are on ls8. After you flash your country/region ROM, warranty will resume.
LS8 is FROM spain FOR spain. If your device isn't from spain, there's no way you can get ls8 thru proper channels. That is what warranty is all about.

Yeah, I understand that.
I can use LS8 until the nordic version comes out, flash it with Odin without a wipe and then have my warranty back when I'm on the nordic version, am I right?

Differences between each country firmwares?

Now I updated my Z5C to MM using the Singapore FTF. As I live in Spain, wonder if there are differences between the firmwares supplied for each country, and btw is there to get the FTF file for each country.
You can flash any firmware from any country. Just use the "unbranded" or "generic" or "customised" ones for your model number. There are just different kinds of bloatwares in each region and you can uninstall them
One difference in the Dutch (NL) firmware, and possibly others, is that instead of 'LTE' and 'LTE+' in the statusbar it shows '4G' and '4G+'.

So it's safe to dirty flash an ftf? Normally I would just wipe it all, but I need to keep some banking applications etc

Yes! I have a Dutch (NL) phone, flashed an unbranded Lollipop FTF over it months ago (from Austria or so), and now I flashed the Marshmallow 6.0 unbranded Singapore FTF. All works fine.
Of course there might be minor problems, but those would also occur if you did a normal update. But that really depends per phone and such.
Also. Don't get scared when flashing a FTF takes 15 minutes or so and it looks like Flashtool is hanging. Especially the system.sin flashing takes a good 10 minutes. But just give it time.
Feel free to contact me if you need help.
Thanks mate.. Greatly appreciate your response
Hmm kinda think its weird that carrier branded version get online way faster then the unbranded one

That's one of the questions I had, now my Z5C shows LTE instead of 4G. Wonder if there's a way to get the right FTF for each country latter...

I had problems yesterday when I dirty flashed MM. Play store and google services didn't work at all. Finally I wiped everything and installed again.

Yeah that's not an option for me as I need to keep my apps and data
I dirty flashed. Updating Google Services took 20 minutes and restarted a few times, as it would get stuck, but finally it went through and everything works fine including Play Store.

What is the one with the least bloatware installed?

If you have root, you could backup using titanium backup and restore when you have the new version

Thanks mate.. wouldn't I need to unlock my bootloader to get root though?
I have a license for Titaniumbackup already
I flashed the Singapore ftf without any wiping and everything is working fine. I didn't lost anything. Even my home screen it's the same with all my shortcuts and widgets.
Some firmwares may disabled the VoLTE if that country/carrier doesn't has VoLTE and some VoLTE got different standard/settings too I've heard. Like if I flash the Singapore MM, my HK VoLTE probably will brick out. But other then VoLTE, everything else should work without problem.

just upgrade play services app to ***-4**,you can find it at apkmirror.com
before update,LP rom got a ***-2** play app. But MM need ***-4** version, after upgrade, everything should work fine.
And for Z5c ,it should be ***-446

Nordic - Bloat can be uninstalled or disabled. 4G icon, no persistent NFC icon.
I'm wondering if not being able to turn off the VoLTE Provisioning Flag in the INFO menu is specific to certain firmwares. I'm using the Singapore firmware and I can't seem to turn it off.
