First, I'm a noob.
Second, I have over 25 years of electrical engineering experience including a lot of programming (microcontrollers too).
The point: I have failed to install Nils' Business ICS 4.0.3 Sense 3.6.
The phone is an HTC Rezound with no SIM card and no service. No phone number, etc. It was a Verizon phone at some point.
What I did:
I followed: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1508118
1) I installed the RUU -> Download the 4.03.605.2 Global RUU: >> MD5 = bcdd450501e390ce323a46b396cd0a49
It worked fine and it seems to run fine.
2) I unlocked the bootloader.
It worked fine.
3) I installed Amon RA from: www(dot)mediafire(dot)com/?nie2w1ei0phhhup
It worked fine and it seems to run fine.
4) I installed -> Version 6.3 >> MD5= 74602137511fac84b78200028c67bb69
The install stated that it completed properly. Very few applications were selected.
I tried both S-on and then S-off. I re-locked the bootloader before installing the RUU each time.
Do I need to do a full wipe following installing an RUU?
If so, what EXACTLY do I need to wipe?
There are MANY choices for wiping in Amon RA.
I did try wiping dalvik once.
When can the USB be connected during this process and when must it not be connected?
Does it matter where the Business sence ROM zip file is located on the external SD card?
I tried it once in the root folder of the external SD. Otherwise, I located it using Amon RA.
Everything seems to work fine until the final reboot into Business ICS Sense, where the phone never gets past the Business ICS Sense bootup screen. I have waited at least 10 minutes. Longer sometimes.
What am I doing wrong?
This can't be all that difficult. Are there some obvious steps that I have skipped?
Thanks.
i always do a full wipe whether im coming from a ruu or a rom, after i flash a rom i always go back into recovery and one:remove the. zip and wipe cache and dalvik cache before i boot a rom up. u need to make sure your rom. zip is on the removable disk drive. never had any issues with doing it this way.

After installing the ROM (choose S-ON), reboot into the bootloader. You need to flash PH98IMG.zip in the bootloader. It's pretty straightforward. Just follow the on screen prompts.

The ROM was on the external SD card (removable drive).
After I install the RUU, I move it into a folder, so it is no longer in the root folder.
I found two Amon RA files. Both supposedly version 3.15.
One is 7087KB (MD5: 9d127cde10b68de5e424aaea2d4a4357)
the other is 7074KB (MD5: 915d5e3cb662076f36f3d6e54759e951) for the img file.
Which one is the right one?
In Amon RA are the following wipe choices:
Main level: Wipe ->
Wipe ALL data/factory reset
Wipe /data
Wipe /cache
Wipe Dalvok-cache
Wipe /sdcard/.android_secure ???
Wipe /boot (most likely not this one)
Wipe /sd-ext (obviously not this one)
Wipe /system ???
Wipe battery stats (probably not important)
Wipe rotate settings ???
Wipe Sdcard (obviously not this one)
Wipe Internal_sd (obviously not this one)
Toggle Ext Full Wipe
Which one(s) should be selected?
Thanks.

I did that.
It didn't work.
That is why I tried S-off too.

Can someone comment as to which selections above should be chosen for a full wipe for ROM replacement?
Also, should it be done before installing the ROM, before booting the ROM, or after?
The directions seem to indicate before installing a ROM -> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1508118
Thanks.
Wipe data cache dalvik boot and system for a clean install. If you're s-on don't forget to flash the kernel or it won't boot

Yup, after rom install make sure it reboots to boot loader then hit power to install kernel
Confirmation requested

What an honor to have NilsP reply. I was hoping for this. Thanks for the pointers. Now if I can only understand what I was told to do.
I should install the Business ICS Sense S-on, NOT S-off (no reason given). Neither has worked for me yet.
In Amon RA do the following:
Wipe Dalvik-cache
Wipe /boot (please verify)
Wipe /system (please verify)
Should this be done before installing RUU?
And also before installing Business ICS Sense?
After installing Business ICS Sense, make sure that the PH98IMG.zip file, which was created at root level during the Amon RA install of Business ICS Sense, is run automatically by the bootloader (the same way the RUU gets run)?
If NilsP or another expert would confirm these steps, it would be greately appreciated. I have tried to be specific, and the answers seem vague to me. When you don't really know exactly what your doing (like me), detail matters.
I have tried to get this done about 6 times now with no success.
Thanks.
Success! Thanks.

This is what I did:
1) Re-lock bootloader > fastboot oem lock
2) In Amon RA >
-wipe data/factory reset (ext SD card removed)
-wipe cache
-wipe dalvik cache
-wipe boot
-wipe system
3) load RUU in bootloader > PH98IMG.zip in ext SD root directory
4) Initialize the OS settings (first boot)
5) Unlock the bootloader > fastboot flash unlocktoken Unlock_code.bin
6) Install Amon RA again > fastboot flash recovery recovery-ra-vigor-3.15-gnm.img
7) In Amon RA again >
-wipe data/factory reset (ext SD card removed)
-wipe cache
-wipe dalvik cache
-wipe boot
-wipe system
8) Move RUU out of root directory, move ROM into root directory
9) Re-install ext SD
10) Back in Amon RA > Business_ICS4.0.3_Sense3.6-v6.3.zip in ext SD root directory
Flash ZIP menu > Choose zip from sd card > choose Business ICS Sense ZIP file
Options:
S-On
Standard Launch Bar
All HTC skins
Apps: Flashlight; MyVerizon; Voice Recorder
saved log file
11) Rebooting & holding breath
Success!
It appears that the wipes were required. Googled wipes to see what they did for safety before doing them.
Thanks all.

Great
The most important wipe is system since my install does the others.

I am currently using mik_os 6.5(http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=946354) and Clockwork Mod recovery. I tried to install 6.5.2 on top of it (wiping cache and dalvik cache) but it gets stuck on the lg logo. After going through the first post, I even formatted /system but that didn't help either.
Finally, I flashed 6.5 and it is working fine. Any pointers would be helpful.
1) mounts and storage/ wipe cache
2) mounts and storage/ wipe system
3) wipe cache partition
4) wipe data or factory reset
5) install zip from sd card
And blowww!! You have 6.5.2 flashed ;-)

Boot into clockwork recovery.
go to backup and restore -create a backup of your current rom (Note:If already backup has been done then avoid this step, backup created using amonra or thunderg wont support restoring using clockwork)
wipe data/factory reset
wipe cache partition
mount and storage-format system
mount and storage-mount usb storage (make sure usb debugging is enabled)
copy the rom zip file to the root of your sd card
unmount
install zip from sd card-choose the rom zip and install
flashing takes 3-5 min
reboot!
just remeber to backup all ur app using titanium and restore after a fresh install and whnever u update no need to wipe anything just flash over the old version until unless mention by the dev
I didn't want to do a factory reset, however; I still went for it after doing a nandroid backup.
I followed all the steps mentioned by sshbz, but it still got stuck at the boot logo (the one with website address written).
Finally, thanks to the Nandroid backup, I reverted back to 6.5 without having to go through titanium restore.
For 6.5.2, the rom link is given in post 1 and mik_os had also posted a fix for clockword mod users.
I have tried the below
1. Install only the rom
2. Install rom and then the fix
Neither worked. I think I would have to wait for the next update now unless someone can make this work for me.
Can someone give me FULL instructions for flashing this coming from Miui AOSP, without Odin? From flashing the Rom to installing the google apps (dont know how to)... I havent flashed a WHILE. Thanks guys
im assuming you have rom manager installed for this and the rom you want installed (trigger redux) is at the root of your micro sd .... once you have those done follow the steps
1. in rom manager hit flash clockworkmod recovery then pick vibrantmtd then pick 3.x.x because we are on gingerbread
2. hit install rom from sd card and find the rom's zip folder and select it afterwords something else will pop up with 3 0ptions, put a check on all 3 (backup rom, wipe data and cache and dalvik cache) then hit install
BY SELECTING WIPE DATA AND CACHE YOUR APPS AND STUFF WILL BE GONE WHEN THE NEW ROM BOOTS UP SO MAKE SURE EVERYTHING YOU WANT IS BACKED UP
IF WIPE DATA AND CACHE IS NOT SELECTED THERE IS ONLY A SLIGHT CHANCE THAT YOU WON'T HAVE TO use ODIN!!
http://www.appbrain.com/app/app-backup-reinstall/tw.nicky.AppBackupReinstall
this link has an app that backs up all your apps to your sd card or you can use titanium back up to back up everything
I went from Muiu to redux and what I did is this: (might be overkill but its what I did and everything worked great)
1. Reboot into recovery
2. clear data/factor reset
3. mounts and storage > format system, format data, format cache
4. install zip from sd card > trigger redux
5. install zip from sd card > gapps
6. advanced > wipe dalvic cache, fix permissions
7. reboot
8. let rom boot up and sit for 10 mins and reboot
9. enjoy
That is the correct way ...Guy above ...

I just want to be 100% sure I am doing this right when it comes to flashing roms and kernals to my evo 3d. I have only flashed once and it was the last update on the evo.
Here is what I can remember
-Back up everything apps and all
-Put zip file on root of memory stick
-Boot into recovery
-Do a factory reset
-Clear cache
-Click install zip from sdcard
-DONE.
Am I missing anything and is this the same for kernals and roms?

Well, what you've got there is pretty accurate for flashing ROMS. The only thing I'd add in there is to create a nandroid backup when you boot into recovery, before doing your factory reset. You also want to wipe dalvik cache along with your cache.
To flash a kernel, you do NOT wipe data (factory reset). Skip on that. For a kernel flash, you only want to wipe cache and dalvik cache, flash the kernel, tehn reboot.
Yea sounds great I usually repeat the wipe process three times just to make.sure.
Sent from my PG86100 using XDA App
so when flashing a kernal I do similar to rom
-copy file to root of sd card
-reboot in recovery
-wipe cache and dalvik
-install zip from sd card? or is it update from sd card?
It's install .zip But ya, sounds like your doing it right!
And you don't have to copy the files to the root of the sd card. If you download the roms straight to your phone they will download in your downloads folder. I just leave them there. Twrp gives you a menu where you can pick what folder to flash from.

im gonnna show you how to downgrade htc Droid dna MUST BE S-OFF AND UNLOCKED WITH TWRP OR CWM!!
1.MAKE A NANDROID BACKUP THIS IS IMPORTANT
2.Put phone in recovery after backup
3.wipe format data dalvik cache and cache
4.flash DNA-Stock-Rooted-v.1.15.605.4 710RD.zip
Then you are done

If they format data, they're going to need to adb push the file in the step before flashing. You should also specifiy that's only flashing the rom and has nothing to do with firmware or radios. Also you mentioned to make a nandroid backup in step 1. But your step 3 would erase that nandroid backup so I'm thinking you need to add the step of moving the nandroid backup files to a different storage device or don't have them format the data partition.
If I was new enough to need these directions and made a nandroid backup in step 1 and followed the directions and realized that I had formatted data which erased the zip I was supposed to flash as well as my nandroid, I'd be quite pissed, but worse I would be frustrated and defeated, and I would hate to see that drive away some users.

I thought that "format data" didn't touch the virtual "sd card". It just wipes the apps and app data. But there is another option to wipe the storage. When I installed a ROM I chose in TWRP to format data, cache, and davlik from their wipe menu. It did not touch the Downloads folder I had saved the ROM to.
Factory reset in recovery is what you are thinking of, which is equal to "format data excluding /media"
In the factory reset menu it says something like "wipe data -/media, cache, and dalvic cache"
If you go to advanced wipe, and wipe the data partition instead of using the factory reset selection it wipes the entire partition, doesnt exclude /media which is the location for /sdcard

I'm sure I qualify for some sort of noob trophy. Having said that, here's my situation: My DNA is rooted w/S-Off, TWRP v2.6.1.0. I have run most of the sense 4 and 5 roms and briefly Newt's GPE v1.0.4. I wanted to flash the official cyanogenmod 10.2. I downloaded the rom and gapps zips and then booted into recovery. From the wipe menu, I did factory reset and advanced wipe of cache, dalvik, and system. Prior to flashing the new rom, I had to step away from the process to help with the kids. When I returned to my DNA, I remembered that I wanted to eliminate the duplicate storage between /data/media and /sdcard that was eating up all my internal storage. As you can likely now guess, my [email protected]$$ formatted the data partition to wipe the sdcard without having ever flashed the rom! I'm now left sitting in recovery with an empty phone. I have my TWRP backups saved on my Windows 7 cpu. What's the SIMPLIEST method to either get one of my backups or a rom.zip onto my sdcard? I thank you in advance for anyone willing to help me out!

Step 0: boot to recovery
Step 1: adb devices //if it isn't detected: Advanced > adb sideload > adb devices again > cancel sideload
Step 2.1 TWRP backup option: adb push <directory of TWRP backup, without "<>"> /sdcard/TWRP/BACKUPS/
Step 2.2: New ROM option: adb push <rom directory> /sdcard/ // you may also need do do this for gapps
Step 3: Restore backup or flash ROM
Thanks, Walther! I wasn't able to get the backup to push, but I had the Tranquil Rom zip on cpu as well and I did successfully push it over to my DNA. It's booted and setting up as I type this. I'll hook up to cpu, when done, and transfer the backup to sdcard. Then, maybe, I'll be able to restore back to where I was before I borked everything up.
Thanks again!
