WiFi Always On option - Verizon Samsung Galaxy Note II

Does choosing this setting under the advanced option in wifi settings really drain more battery ... especially when youre in doors and only get a 3g signal? Does anyone have this setting on?

I think it helps. All it does is leave wifi on with the screen off. It's sure better then a weak 3g signal

[Q] Turning Modem/Radio off

I just started a Masters of Geology program and needed to make money cuts everywhere.... the cell phone was an easy choice since I have wifi almost everywhere I go.
In the interest of battery life, does anyone know if there is a way to turn the cellular modem/radio off and leave the bluetooth, gps, and wifi modem on?
Thanks

There should be a setting to disable data under mobile netwerks settings

I don't have a setting for that, at least not under Mobile Network Settings.
I suppose I should mention that I am running Bionix Frost 2.2.1 with kernal 2.6.32.9; I don't know if that would make a difference.
Thanks for the replies.

Any way to disable LTE 4G and 3G data?

I am always on wifi so I don't need LTE, 4G, HSPA or 3G.... is there any way I can force 2G or edge only on an AT&T locked Galaxy Note i717? I've looked all over the forums and people say go into the menu and select that option, but it doesn't work. Same with apps, don't work. I've read flashing a different modem will enable that option to work, but won't I need an unlocked phone to do so?

Why in the world would you want to do that. Why go to 2G? Why not just turn the data off

Well like I said I'm on wifi all day and don't need LTE killing my battery for no reason. And, so I can still send or receive pictures.
LTE/Data is automatically disabled when you connect to wifi. No need to do anything. It will turn itself on automatically to receive/send mms.

Im guess the op really meant to say how to turn it off when not using wifi?
otherwise, like you guys mentioned, it turns off automatcially when wifi connects
and 2G still exists?

So by forcing 2G I'm not going to see any battery improvement since it's automatically turned off since I'm always on wifi?

That is Apple's "innovation" for you right there. This is Android. Android turns off cellular data when on wifi and only turns it on when needed for MMS.
You notice how when on wifi you don't see a 4g icon? Send an mms and you will see it pop up long enough for the message to be sent and then disappear.
That is your phone automatically enabling/disabling cellular data when needed/not needed.
Ok, well to get this back on track I'd like to force 2G or even 3G no matter what. Any solution for me?
Dial *#*#4636#*#* and hit phone information. Scroll down and in the drop down list and choose GSM Only. Reboot.

Nope. Even on wifi, say If you're sending or receiving MMS it will use your data (4G or LTE). Also, unless you have it turned on while the phone is asleep, your phone will switch back to 4G for downloading or synchronize data. 2G takes longer to download information because of he slower speed which causes the phone to drain battery because the phone would still be downloading the data.

WiFi a little whacky?

Anyone else notice sometimes it looses the strength of signal on a WiFi network ? If so is there a fix?

It seems as though when it goes to sleep sometimes it looses the latch on true wifi signal. Also that's the same method I use toggle off /on and it works. It has to be a sleep setting for the WiFi

Probably a problem with the phone. Take it back and get different device, perhaps something with JB already installed....that should fix all your issues.

Do you have the power saver enabled? There is a setting in there about turning off WiFi if it isn't processing data. That could be what is causing it.

AT&T Smart Wifi
Check and see if AT&T Smart WiFi is on. I swapped my first LGOG because I thought there was a problem, but instead it was the AT&T Smart Wifi App. I am experimenting with using it now to manage my WiFi and it is working just fine now that I have stopped messing with the WiFi setting in the phone settings.

Battery + temperature on "edge" (1x network)

Hey guys,
I'm finding that when my phone is in an area with very poor data and goes to 1x mode that after a few minutes the phone will get very hot and it seems to drink battery like no one's business.
I'm wondering if there's a way to disable 1x at all? It's pretty much useless anyways these days the throughput isn't even enough to really even send / receive emails from my server let alone anything else.
I'm finding myself having to manually disable mobile data when I notice it's occurring (which I don't always). really the only way I notice is why my pocket starts getting warm =)
Thanks!
This also has been happening to me. In school a lot of my classes are in the basement and I get terrible reception.
Turn off Mobile data then?
Poor service and battery use have always gone hand in hand.
Set up a toggle to turn off your data connection at those times? You'll still get texts and phone calls.

I stated that I would do this in my first post but I also stated that I don't always notice it. It sucks to lose 30-50% of your battery life before you realize you're in power drain mode.
Does anyone know if I can just disable the 1X antenna completely (permanently) at all times?
Thanks!
If I'm not mistaken 1x is data roaming, so disabling the roam option in your data settings should eliminate it

I had always thought it was just a poor connection which put you on 1x because the data connection was so slow.

1x is essentially 2g. EVDO is 3g.
You will know you are romaing when your signal bars have a triangle on top of them. That is the only roaming indicator.
When your on 1X your Phone Constantly tries to connect to 3G/LTE your battery ifs drained from your phone trying to connect to 3G

Couldn't find the options you're referring to under "mobile network settings"
you can change roaming mode - but none of these settings seems like it would work.
Am I missing something? Thanks for the reply!

This is what will preserve your battery life from a poor connection if it bothers you.
1x is not roaming. Its a very slow connection due to a poor connection.
Roam settings is in mobile connections. It will give you some options for roaming.

The problem is I'm not doing it by choice this is on the stock ROM or any other Sense ROM I've tried (OMJ, Fresh, Stock Rejuv)

Wifi (not hotspot) insight needed

Is there any reason my phone says it has a strong wifi signal but it keeps dropping wifi and starts using verizon network instead?
background:
new JB basband rooted and unloxk with jailbreak method
that's it........
Thought there may be a JB vs L4 modem and rom issue (New at this...)
Thanks
Or it may be changing settings when one first gets the phone and doesn't read (not that there is a manual) about each setting first.

That's what I thought the problem was but I was wrong............
Turns out the phone jack in the kitchen died so the wife moved the phone into the office. Cut my wifi signal by half, so in those areas where it was iffy to begin with, it was switching to Verizon.
I think it is all solved........(but I thought that last time.

Well.....my laptop is at 9.8 mps and the phone is getting 5 mps so there is some problem but signal strength says very strong.
When is the last time you rebooted your router?
As a pre-emptive strike, I am not interested in other devices work fine and there is no reason to because of that. They aren't using the same wifi card and they all behave differently with their own little quirks. Point in case, I have had my PC lose wifi, but my phone is fine and a router reboot clears it up.
Is it while MMS messaging? I've noticed my phone switches to 3g/4g while sending MMS, even if wifi is on.
Compared the wifes s3 side by side with my note and they dropped together so did a factory reset of the router and all is well.
Thanks for the efforts.....
