Install HTC Camera JB Plus Ver 1.0? - HTC Droid DNA

How can Install the Camera apk on the rooted stock with writable kernel DNA? I replaced this apk with the original stock camera apk, changed the permissions to rw--r--r--. Then, rebooted. But, I don't get the new camera options.
thanks.

Did you mount the /system partition as read/write? This is in addition to the writable kernel, and must be done each time you want to change /system while booted. Most root capable file explorers (i.e. ES explorer) have an option to do this, or you could use this adb command
Code:
adb remount

[Q] Rooted or not?

Hi, I rooted my Vribrant, both ways (manually and with one click root). I installed terminal emulator. I tried the su command to check if I am root. The # appears normally. However I tried deleting a file with Root explorer, inside the system folder, and when I get back it's still there. I also tried deleting it manually from Terminal EMulator with these commands:
su
cd system/apps
rm Swype.apk
and I get this:
rm failed for Swype.apk, Read-only file system
I also tried:
su rm Swype.apk
and this is returned:
Permission denied.....
I also tried the exact same thing from adb shell (which I had to allow in superuser permissions program), but it gave me the exact same results. What's wrong? Am I doing something wrong? Thanks
In root explorer, try hitting the r/w button at the top and see if that works.

I know about the button. The strange thing is that inside system folder it grands me r/w permissions, and no matter how many times a press the r/o button it doesn't change. Still gives the results I said. However, besides root Explorer what's wrong with terminal emulator and adb?
I'm not 100% sure how to mount as root in adb. I wish I knew myself heh.
Did any of those root methods install the superuser app?

Terminal Emulator should return a "#" after typing "su"
Sent from my SGH-T959 using Tapatalk
From a terminal write
adb root. (will give root)
adb remount. (will remount system as r/w)
adb shell cp /system/app/swype.apk /system/app/swype.apk.bak
Adb shell rm /system/app/swype.apk
This link is what i used to use to gain rw permissions
http://android-tricks.blogspot.com/2009/01/mount-filesystem-read-write.html
Alternatively from terminal on the phone type
su
mount -o rw,remount -t yaffs2 /dev/block/mtdblock3 /system
Assuming your sys partition is mntblock3

I tried the first method but it didn't work. When I entered adb root, it said "adbd cannot run as root in production builds". I searched a bit and found that I must have a rooted kernel for this to work. (I guess it's different from the root method I tried in "how to root vibrant").
Anyway the second way worked, where i replaced mntblock3 with stl9 for my phone. I tried the rm command and it worked! However as soon as I exited terminal, I couldn't delete other files. I had to retype the command. I can't do this everytime I need access in System folder. Why is this happenning? Does this have something to do with the fact that root explorer cannot change r/w to r/o mode while in system folder?
what if you open Superuser
Click on Root Explorer.
Click on Forget.
Open Root Explorer and grant Root Access and check to remember it.
work now?
Moved to Q&A, please post in the correct section.

No it didn't work. I also installed the latest version of SuperUser 2.3.6.1. But without a difference unfortunately.
What works for me, is installing sgs tools, and whenever I want to do write operations on system folder, run the appropriate script from sgs and then use root explorer......
Although I think there's something wrong? Why doesn't the mount r/w button work in root explorer, and why do I have to remount the file system through SGS tools, every time for it to work?
makes no sense to me either. Have you uninstalled RE and the installed it back granting root once reinstalled?
Yes several times.....
I am giving up. I just have to go through the whole process every time. I found some other people having this issue. I am on stock JI6 firmware. Maybe when I read a little bit more I will flash a custom rom.
Download and install Super Manager. Pretty handy program to use for Root users.
I'm not sure what the issue is,but mine does it too. I'm running the "unofficial" froyo JK2 build, flashed via ODIN,and I'm having the same issues. root works, root file explorer is stuck in rw,won't let me switch to ro,and it can't do anything to files in / or /system. manually remounting it from terminal or sgs tools works.

At least I am not the only one with this problem.... haha
I forgot to mention that I use Root Explorer version 2.12.2
When I try a custom Rom I will post the results....
^ why not get the update, .4 is the most recent build. Do you have an illegal copy?
It's not only root explorer. It happens with other file explorers too like android mate and super manager... Inside system folder whatever, I do doesn't happen unless I unmount and remount like before

Rooted, can't edit /system

Hello folks.
Running 673.94.324.XT910.AsiaRetail.en.03 (4.0.4). Apparently rooted, but can't install/swap /system apps or edit /system files, even through the terminal.
Any idea what could be done?
Thanks!

Verify your root install with SuperSU or SuperUser, check updates, also check that the app that you want to do that is on the Allow List of SU.
Since you're messing with ROMs and terminal commands you're probably beyond this but depending on which file explorer you're using, you might have to give it permission to mount the system as RW. In ES File Explorer, it's a check box in settings. In Root Explorer, I think it's a button on the main screen.

[Q] Unable to change file permission on rooted Samsung Galaxy S III

Hi,
I tried changing file permission on one of the folders where I saved my photos to read-only using "Root Browser Lite".
The following error message came up: "Changing permission was not successful. Please note that some file systems do not allow permission changes".
I tried using ES file explorer but it also failed.
Could someone please tell me how I could change the file or folder permission. I wanted to prevent the photos from being accidentally deleted by my children when I let them browse their photos..
My phone I9300 was rooted using CF Auto Root.
Thanks
Get root explorer, it's much better.
Simply long press on a folder and the permissions option is there.

Don't forget to set to rw at the top of root explorer before attempting to change permissions
If you're talking about the internal memory, you can do chattr +i /data/media/[name of folder] to set the immutable bit. EDIT: You need BusyBox installed for the chattr command
This works because /storage/sdcard0 (JB's usual mountpoint for the internal eMMC) is a fake FAT32 file system Google created for compatibility; the internal eMMC can really be found at /data/media, which is of the ext4 filesystem.
For the external memory, you can try SGS3 Easy UMS and set the read only property on the folder using your computer. (I can't find mattrib for Android.) There is no guarantee that Android/Linux programs will obey the RO attribute, however.
The reason why Root Browser Lite & ES File Explorer didn't work is because they work on UNIX file permissions, while a file system formatted using FAT obviously doesn't understand them - it would expect DOS/FAT attributes. That said, though, have you already backed up the data you consider to be important?
100% work
Try this.....

=============
Thank you all for your advice. The file system explanation betw FAT and ext4 fs makes sense. I have BusyBox installed.
Via Terminal Emulator, when I did "chattr -i /data/media/DCIM/Camera", I got a "permission denied".
Is there something that prevented me from this?
I'm running ICS.
Thanks
Did you type su before the command..
Just asking..

Thanks Zoot1.
I did that.
Image Gallary is still showing /mnt/sdcard/DCIM/Camera as "writeable".
What is the difference between two folders /data/media/DCIM/Camera and /mnt/sdcard/DCIM/Camera?
Thanks,
Note that I used +i in my example invocation of chattr. - removes the attribute; + sets it, which is what you want

Thanks qwerty12, after 'chattr +i folder name' , I return to root browser lite to change permission on mnt/sdcard/DCIM/Camera, I still get permission denied. What did I do wrong?

Mount System RW
The problem is that your system is currently in RO (Read-Only) mode.
Even if you are root, can't mess with system files if the setup is like that.
ES File Explorer works because it has an option (that DOES work) to mount the system in RW (Read-write) mode.
On my ES File Explorer Version 3.0.0 it goes like this:
Android menú button--->Tools---->Root Explorer--->Mount R/W.
Set: /system (or all of the options) to: RW----->OK.
Now, explore your files using the ES File Explorer interface on your phone and you should be able to erase every file and apk you want even if they are system files.

Make sure you are mounting /system as RW first. By default it is RO. If you have root explorer it's just easy as clicking the RW button but if not there is always terminal and a command you enter.

Terminal I mentioned to mount your system as RW. Why not edit your build.prop on computer and push it to your device in recovery mode.

Tried to do it with adb but it comes back to original one.
i was able to successfully change the build.prop file by using the file manager in twrp recovery.
i kept the modified file on my sd card, went into recovery, fired up the file manager, browsed to my sd card, selected the modded file, chose the copy option, then chose the /system folder as the destination. rebooted and the changed file stayed changed!
my device is rooted, bootloader unlocked, and s-on.
root explorer with r/w mounting didnt work for me...file would revert after reboot.
also tried "cp" command in terminal in recovery...didnt seem to copy successfully.
hope this helps!

Mount /system RW / RO Android 7.1.1 Lenovo Tab 4 10"

I have a problem with making a /system folder into read/write permission. I made root (TWRP 3.2.3, SuperSU-v2.82 - in TWRP is unchecked read-only) and the problem is tablet freezes EVERY time a make change from RO to RW.
I used Root explorer, ES file explorer, Root file manager, Super manager... Every time when I change it and press "ok" tablet freezes. Also I try via terminal "mount -o rw,remount /system", nothing, a download apk "Mount system RO RW ROOT" and apk said it did it, by when I check in file explorer it is still read only. (also I try via fastboot and comannds pull and push and it said that file is read only)
I really need to make changes in /system/build.prop and I'm out of options...
Anyone?

Hey have you found a fix for this???
I have the same problem.
device x00id os 7.1.1 (downgrade from aosp 9.0 > 8.1 > 7.1.1 because everytime i upgrade i had battery issue)
twrp 3.1.1.0.zip
supersu 2.79.zip (i've tried to use magisk.zip before)
1. flash twrp
2. flash su.zip
3. reboot system
4. open root explorer
5. copy folder /su to sdcard or internal storage. (my device doesnt freeze when copy file from root to sdcard, but my screen freeze when try to switch 'ro' to 'rw')
6. reboot to twrp again
7. mount system
8. advance > file manager
9. copy all item in /sdcard/su to /system/xbin and /system/bin (i only copy file su to /system/bin)
10. tap every files that you copy and click 'chmod 755'
11. reboot system
now you can try to switch your 'ro' / 'rw' button in your root explorer. i think screen freeze while access root happens because root method (twrp and magisk) doesnt instal root as system ('respecting encryption' or whatever)
but i hate to see my device forced to keep updating apps like fb, messenger, ig that i dont use it. a lot bloatware that forced to instal in customer device that drain battery.
i hope this help you or whoever that has same problems. good luck.
