Corrupted IMEI when flashing Samsung JB ROMs - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

It happened when I flashed the first leak, now it happened with the "official" ROM
I have a backup of my efs so I can recover my IMEI everytime I flash the JB ROM but! I can't recover my imei while using the rom, only when i change to another ROM I can restore the EFS folder.
I've tried many Samsung JB ROMs even tried Odin and nothing. I just get my IMEI corrupted and I have no mobile data, I just have Emergency calls.
Any idea of how to fix this?

You see this is why people refuse to do search because its easier for them to just spam forum, not use search and wait for somebody to search for them like yourself. These people miss things they could learn on the way.
You may think you're been helpful but you're really not.

I've done the recover imei in 9 steps many times before, like I said l, this isn't the first time my imei gets corrupted. But it doesn't seem to work on Samsung ROM for me, I only can restore my imei after putting an aosp ROM, and it's weird how my imei gets corrupted every time I flash a Samsung jb ROM but when I flash an ICS Samsung ROM or AOSP nothing happens.
But yea, the point is that my imei gets corrupted when using a Samsung jb ROM and I can't restore it like I usually do. I do read and I couldn't find a way to fix it that's why I made a thread, I'm not a spammer in any way.

You can use another app to back it up, like HC kTool.
I've got like 3 EFS back ups, can't hurt.

Have you tried manual way. ??

yes, had spent much time with terminal to restore IMEI but nothing works, but after flashing cm10.1 roms, IMEI is back
fyi, my latest efs backup was from ICS
fyi once more, /efs is restored, but ROM (samsung jb only) didn't read IMEI, so no baseband and signal

Have you tried z3x? ? Or just copy and paste the efs files? Have you tried on say neat Rom? That's 4.1.2 custom firmware.
wont make a difference weather you Bk up efs on 4.0.3 or 4.1.2 .
All the same

just copy and paste never works for me. I had lost IMEI since ICS and able to restore it whatever the ROM was, by using this method or HC kTool. But now, only on samsung JB roms (both stock and custom) no method works.

yes. neat, chameleon, alliance, and stock give me same result: /efs restored but still no IMEI, baseband, and signal

Have you tried Bk up on cm10.1 and restore with that Bk up on jb rom? Don't delete your Bk up you have now whatever you do but id try that
Edit. Or an old nandroid Bk up ..restore that may help.

Yes, had tried that once, and same result: /efs restored, no IMEI, no baseband, no signal
unfortunately, I have no more old (ICS and below) nandroid backups

I think I find out why, after reading http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1881304
my modem is from 4.0.3 but my firmware is 4.1.2 or 4.2.2
edit: after using firmware, modem, and RIL of the same version, now everything works normally

Did you happen to install emg4? If yes, either restore efs backup or install emg4 modem

You don't need to flash firmware. Just modem as suggested. All info in the imei / efs thread. Please read the stickies

When MG4 or newer comes out for your country, flash that by Odin too. I don't see you have a lot of choice tbf.

Its not weird really. Flashing mg4 rom changes efs so older modems cannot read it. That's why you can't get it to work

No need to wait just root your device and flash some good custom roms, like omega or something. Stock roms are good anyway. You wont regret rooting or flashing if you do it right. Trust me

[Q] GT-i9300 imei null/null, unknown baseband

I have an i9300 with a blank efs folder. The phone corrupted and was stuck in a boot loop. This happened when battery run out while file sharing was in progress via bluetooth to another android samsung. I flashed it with 4.22 android jelly bean immediately XXUFME3 but it remained stuck on boot loop, I never backedup efs file. Later found the original ROM although it comes up as custom rom, which is i9300XXEMB5_i9300OXAEMB5 but still no luck as it stuck in boot loop. My sister has the same identical phone both were purchased together in Dubai. I did factory reset etc, no luck still in boot loop.
I later gave it to a mobile shop who flashed it with a rom for free, didn't charge me because it came up as imei null/null and baseband unknown. The phone now boots and has Build number of IMM76D.I9300BUALE6 and is german language I believe. I had read some threads by now and I immediately rooted the phone and backed it up, but my efs folder is blank.
Last night I flashed the phone 2 times with i9300xxemb5 rom and rooted it and it still boot looped even factory reset or cache delete don't solve boot loop, Then I restored the working rom of build i9300BUALE6 from CWM and powered phone on and got a baseband of i9300XXEMB5 and Build of i9300BUALE6 also got an imei of 004999xxxxx0000/01 and the phone found the network and my efs folder which had been blank all this time was full of files. In my haste I realized the sim was not plugged in and removed battery, when I restarted with sim, baseband was gone and imei was null/null. I repeated my steps in hopes I could get this fluke opportunity but nothing yet. Was this a miracles I didn't seize by not backing up the efs folder?
My sister's phone is an identical model bought together with mine is,
AP:i9300xxemb5
CP:i9300xxemb5
CSC:i9300oxaemb5
So my question is I need the original stock rom for my sisters phone that won't get stuck in a boot loop on my phone
My phone is now
AP:i9300buale6
CP:unknown
CSC:i9300vfgale6
Also can this be fixed by backing up my sister's efs folder or backing up her phone and flashing it on my phone. I can't get warranty for this phone now since it has binary counter of 12, don't have proof of purchase and also I am not in Dubai but in Africa. What Rom file should I try to flash. Also because this is a custom rom I am not getting samsung serial port in device manager can't use NV writer. Any help is appreciated.
If you don't have an efs backup then you need a service centre, you cannot repair it. Trying to use another phone's efs folder won't work and is illegal in many countries.
Read the sticky on efs:

If its a custom rom their is a very small chance that it included backup pf EFS .
Look for EFS tar file on phone .
I say slim chance and judged by the OP probably no chance .
004999xxxxx0000/0 that's just the generic non working IMEI .

Sorry to hijack this thread but I dropped my S3 i9300 on water and have the imei null /null and baseband unknown problem, therefore SIM cards are not recognized. Do you think my problem can be solved by doing something without taking it to samsung service? Meanwhile I ordered a SIM /SD tray replacement but my bet is it won't solve the problem.
Thank you.

hi from what you explained it seems that right now your phone has no baseband. One thing you can do to possibly recover your imei and network settings is to flash a stock rom that uses mg4 or mg2 baseband. use a rom from sammobile and flash with odin make sure you use a rom with an mg2 or mg4 baseband. good luck

A custom kernel has no connection with the lost of IMEI or it's a solution for the recovery of an IMEI. So no, no custom kernels will help you with your problem.
Either try ashraf's suggestion or ultimately bring it to a Samsung service center for repair.

You can try but i doubt that it'll restore your IMEI. If that doesn't work then you have no choice other than to bring it to Samsung for repair.

I don't know about perseus kernel but I don't think it will help. your imei and efs foder was intact before flashing4.2.2. I understand that the problem began before flashing 4,2,2. but if you ever had a rom that used an mg4 or mg2 modem and then used an older modem your phone would lose its network connection and would probably display a generic imei number. if it says null usually that means it is corrupted or no modem is installed . either way if you send to service center you need to flash a stock rom and reset your flash counter . since some people have recovered their efs and imei by flashing newer modems or firm wares that use them why not try it before sending phone to service center

Thanks but you didn't read my first post. I did not flash any rom (or even root) before the problem, which started from dropping the phone on water...so I have no warranty left This means I can take the phone anyway I want (custom kernel, rooted) to samsung service cause they will charge me anywat.
But I think I will try to flash a rom like the other user sayd because I flashed the Perseus Kernel and the phone is now unstable and reboots randonly...
Cheers
my mistake that post was for the op of this thread
I don't care anymore that my original answer was
deemed not acceptable enough and warranted a second opinion. I am once and for all, going to put this nonsense to bed.
If you lost your imei because you submerged your phone in water it is a hardware issue. It is INCONCEIVABLE that flashing a rom, kernel or baseband will restore the imei. A SOFTWARE solution will NOT repair DAMAGED HARDWARE. This is obvious!
If your Blu ray player cannot read disks because the disk tray fell off, upgrading the laser driver wont help. This is exactly the same.
Depending which hardware failed, replacing the tray may help although given the symptoms, it seems much more likely that your radio stack is damaged. Take it somewhere to get it repaired and stop wasting time pretending software will fix your issue. It's IMPOSSIBLE

I see you're still struggling to understand this.
2) If the ROM is MG (M = 2013, G = July) or Newer, the ROM changes EFS format. This means if you flash one of these ROMs without backing up your EFS, you are restricted to using an MG modem or newer as only Modems from July 2013 can read new EFS format. I'm really not sure how I can make this any simpler to understand.
However, if you flash the modem separately from the ROM, EFS is not changed. So for example, if you are on ME7 ROM, you can flash MG2 modem without affecting EFS.
I hope this is clear now.

Dear rootSU,
you've been very patient with me and i really appreciate your efforts at making me understand and i've understood a lot because of you only, but what puzzles me is that
1)this restriction is for those who've not backed up EFS whereas in my case i had in the very beginning only made an EFS backup.
2)and if i flash ME7 ROM then since am coming from MG5 to ME7 my imei would again be corrupt and i'll have to flash MG2 baseband...right??even if i have an EFS backup(EFS PRO won't restore my imei in this case despite a backup)?
thanks in advance

How to downgrade 4.2.2>4.1.2 safely?

I have searched and think I know what I'm doing, but I wonder if some kind soul could confirm what I think, before I eff my phone up?
I'm currently running a 4.2.2 Samsung ROM (Archidroid) but I'm not happy with the lag. I want to go back to a 4.1.2 ROM.
Am I correct in thinking that I can just flash the new ROM and then restore my EFS backup, and I won't have a problem with losing my IMEI/phone going into factory mode, etc? My EFS backup was done when I was on a 4.1 ROM. Or do I need to restore EFS before flashing the new ROM?
Thanking you!

just back up efs every time. be sure> flashing firmwares based on MG, changes efs format to a new one. after that if you wanna flash a firmware based on previous releases(to XXEMG4), you will be facing network problems like no data connection, no calls, no text messages etc., so once you flash a firmware i.e released after MG4, be sure the next custom rom/ stock f/w you flash is newer to it. good luck
Can I not flash an older firmware safely by restoring my EFS? Or is it risky?

Yeah thanks, I've read that more than once:
If you have ever flashed XXEMG* (or newer) ROM, to keep your IMEI working, you must:
1. Stay with the EFS v2 basebands (MG* or newer). You may flash other ROMs but must return to the MG* (or newer) baseband
2. Restore your EFS backup (taken before XXEMG* or newer ROM install) to use older (EFS v1) basebands. EFS backup must be an EFSv1 backup to use an EFS v1 baseband
3. If the above don't work, consider sending for repair...
This is the part I am worried about.

that's what exactly i was trying to tell you. XXEMG4 f/w is some what problematic but the f/w-s released after that are good enough. once you flash any of these f/w-s, back up your efs for sure.

Yes, but I want to go back to a ROM with an earlier baseband than EMG4, so I can use a custom kernel. The performance on later ROMs with the standard kernel (which is all you can use at the moment) is not satisfactory.
So my question is, in order to go back to a ROM based on firmware earlier than EMG4, can it be done SAFELY? If so, do I need to restore my EFS backup before I flash the ROM or afterwards? Or, if it's not safe then what should I do to minimise my chances of messing my phone up?

Try different 4.1.2 stock roms prior to 'MG' series. Make a clean installation.
As you were on 4.2.2, you were probably not on efs v2. Take backup of efs.

[Q] [SOLVED] Generic IMEI on AOSP ROM

Hello.... Before few months ago I tried one Samsung-based ROM which changed my efs to efs v2 becuase this ROM used the XXEMG4 baseband... I lost my IMEI but I repair it by Kies and flashing orinal ROM via ODIN. But I can using ONLY Samsung-based ROMs. I cannot use Cyanogenmod (I tried only Cyanogenmod 11) or another AOSP ROM (e.g. I tried SuperNexus with the same result) because evertime I lost the IMEI and I got the generic IMEI (0049990106400).
I tried install Cyanogenmod and then XXEMG4 modem or XXEMG2 from here but nothing helps
It's any chance to use a AOSP-based ROM in the future? I don't belive. But if you have some hints or helps, please reply. I think that I really tried many tricks from XDA Developers forum or from Youtube but nothing helps...
I tried every modem from this link or I tried also many tricks from this thread but nothing helps...
Maybe I cannot using Samung modems on AOSP ROM, or can I?
Of course, I can using any Samsung-based ROM (Ultima, Omega, Stock). Then IMEI is OK and efsv2 basebands reads my efs folder without any problem. Only AOSP ROMs have a problem
Thanks for hints and help

I think that I really tried many tricks from here or from youtube but nothing helps...

Have you tried the patched modems >> https://drive.google.com/folderview...=sharing&tid=0B6MIUd7HJudAbU5YaGkzOUowMG8#lis << I have efs v2 upgraded from efs v1 and can use asop roms omni or stock without any problems.I personally don't use the any patched modems because i have never had any problems but they may help you
SOLVED
SOLVED )) WOW ) OK, I tried your recommended Patched modems but dind't help. But before installing Cyanogenmod I backup my efs folder from my Samsung ROM. After installed CM I don't have any IMEI (IMEI was null). So, I tried your patched kernel. Then I got generic IMEI and then I copied !ONLY 2 FILES! from my backuped efs folder. nv_data.bin and nv_data.bin.md5 and my problem is solved!
My problem was that I restored complete my EFS folder from Samsung ROM and thi is wrong. Only 2 files are needed. nv_data.bin and nv_data.bin.md5. Of course, you must have a functional Samsung based ROM and then backup EFS before installing Cyanogenmod :good:
So, maybe this reply hepls to others

Im trying to restore my EFS since last friday, so i had been 5 days working on it.
A lot of ppl said that I needed to copy nv_data.bak from Cyanogenmod and put it on EFS on touchwiz, and it never worked :crying::crying::crying:
You deserve your own topic on XDA, so people with the same problem could solve it.

[Q] After flashing stock samsung rom, i have been stuck on emergency calls only, help?

Hi,
After flashing stock s3 rom my sim card is not being detected. i know the sim card works because i tried it on another phone and i have a feeling my efs file has been made corrupt as my imei has been completely changes to 0049xxxx. Also i cannot connect to any wifi network but theyre being found . ive looked everywhere and found no answer. Please help me on how i can fix it.
I'm guessing that you made no efs backup? Do your phone's cellular functions or wi-fi work while running a custom rom? What kind of GS3 do you own (i9300 or i9305?).

You cannot go backwards to 4.1 with out a efs v1 back up. Somewhere in 4.3 samsung updated it to v2.
Without a back up you can only use the latest 4.3 and upwards.
