Dead pixel? - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I've noticed on my screen when my screen shows black that I have like a dark little line on my scree about half a cm long and about a mm thick. Is this a dead pixel? When I do the colour dead pixel test it's fine but soon as it goes black it's quite visible.

And ?

do you have a scratch gaurd on the screen?
if yes, maybe its just an air bubble

Are you talking about the ones visible in dark environments with low brightness? Kinda like stains? If yes, that's normal

It's not easy to see those stains, I can only notice them when it's dark and the screen is turned on and fully black :good:

Use Wallpaper Wizardrii from the market. There is an option on the set screen to set a solid color. That's what I have right now on my screen.

I'm not sure, but with certain displays no specific color of wallpaper with give it better battery life
The rezound may fall under that category

This ^^^ is true. LCD screens use power anyway, no matter what color is displayed. LED, however, will save power because it only uses power to display colors, and black is not a color on LED, it's just off.
Yeah, not gonna save battery.
It might, maybe, kinda, make a difference in a totally imperceptible way on an AMOLED display.

False?
LED screens are currently just LCD screens with LED backlights. They work the same.
Plasma displays use no power showing black along with OLED.
I think you are mixing up LED and OLED.

LCD uses more power with a black wallpaper because it has to force it black. White will save battery
Try this don't think its going to help with battery though as the lights will still be on behind the image. Might save a little memory though as the images are very small.
So many different opinions in if it helps or not lol

No...LED and OLED are two very different screens.
LED is an LCD screen backlit by LED lights.
OLED is a printed organic material that created its own light.
Then there is sonys crystal LED which will have LED bulbs for everypixel and won't use an LCD panel. Each LED contains red/blue/green subpixels.

Black spots that are visible on black backgrounds are called ink spots. They are very common in AMOLED screens, since almost every AMOLED screen have them.

I am so happy I don't have any black spots on my sgs3 yet galaxy nexus and sgs2 had them
Believe me, you haven't noticed them yet. But they are there =)
Yeah I have them too. They are normal.
how bad is it?
I am about to buy the s3 tomorrow. Every night i watch series in bed on my galaxy s. I cannot have a screen with weird black spots. Are they easy to notice (mostly i use screen filter to dim my screen an extra 75%). I'm really afraid these will be very very visible.
I didn't notice them until I dropped my phone on its face and got a couple of mini-scratches on the screen... now they're very visible, but they appear only where the scratches are.
Black spots
I use S3 for 8 months and black spots on the screen increases ....

Any complaints about the white S3 ?

ok,so I decided to get an S3 after a long confusion between it and the gnex but I'm still not sure which color should I get.I've seen both colors in reality and surprisingly, they both look much better in real life than in pics.I like both but I want to get the white 1 for a change since I never had a white phone.I'm just wondering if anyone with a white S3 got any problems with it like color fading/scratches on the brushed metal sides/button light or notification-LED bleeding into the screen or any other problems.
IDK about the white since i dont have one, but im sure as heck no one complains about the blue : D
Yeah, it isn't blue....
Seriously though, I own both colours. There is no noticeable difference in how they work, its just the colour... Get your preference...
There are many colours to choose now.
Sent from my GT-I9300 using xda app-developers app
I got the white because I can't wait for anything, wasn't that keen to start with but now I'm really happy with it. I think it looks a quite classy now. I think I even prefer it over the blue... sorry blue fans

Just to be clear so there is no confusion for the OP. The "bleeding" is not into the screen its self but into where its white around the screen. And like Coreym said, it adds to the phone IMO, makes the whole white bezel glow. Not a problem for me.

I bought the white yesterday. I'm loving it (except for the massive battery drain, it's the same as mi iPhone 3G).

No real problems at all with the white, and I think the blue with the curved edges do make it look a little too cheap for my liking, especially on the back cover.

Yep there is a topic on it in general section I think. "ink marks" or something. Personally I think it is not a major problem. I have 2 or 3 tiny spots but most of the time we don't use the phone in a pitch black environment, nor are we looking at a pure black screen (how often do you spend in the homescreen?). It would however be an issue if it was noticable during movies, games etc, where the viewing experience is paramount

Yes true, it would be an issue if it was visible while watching movies and such.. but question is how long should this ink spot last compare to the other parts of the screen?
What does this ink indicate?
Yes I have them and it annoys me. And I don't understand why people defend it and say it's okay, we've all paid a lot of money for these phones how is it okay or acceptable to have black dots all over the screen? Yes it's only under very specific conditions but that's not the point, it is extremely annoying watching movies when they fade to black, when in the app launcher under dark conditions. And it's not just 1 or 2 small dots it's like someone broke a black pen and flicked it all over the screen.

I've only had the phone a few days now so I'm giving it the benefit of the doubt since everything I've read is saying you get used to it but...... It's there..... There are dots on the screen every time there's black, how do you get used to that? I understand every AMOLED screen has it but don't you think that if it's that big a problem then the screens aren't ready for prime time and need to improved? I've found myself using white everywhere when black is what saves battery on an AMOLED screen and black looks good on an AMOLED screen but I can't stand the dots.

You seem to have a Nexus 4. If you look hard enough, you can see the same lines on that phone too. It's just the screen technology those phones use, it's completely normal.

The display should be stronger than the avarage human eyes which is 430ppi

I had a nexus 4 and own the Z2 as well. It is perfectly normal. It is the digitiser which is built into the glass screen that you see. If I'm not mistaken, it appears under certain lighting conditions and you can see it at times and cannot at others? It is perfectly normal so don't worry! My N4/Z2 digitiser lines are not extremely visible unless held in certain ways for light to reflect off but my brother's N4 has extremely visible lines for the digitiser! Hope this helps! :highfive:
I've just been to two stores to compare my phone with other Z2's and yes the lines are more pronounced than the others... The funny thing is that my blacks are darker and my whites are whiter... It looks that the screens are different...

What i see is this:

I think i'm going to return it. With low light it's ok but during the day i can see it very well.
This is the second Z2 that i return. The first one had a tinted red display.
