[Q] update from 4.0.3 to 4.0.4? - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi
I'm using rooted android version 4.0.3 I9100XXLPW and thinking to update the 4.0.4 via software update option in the phones settings. Recommend that i should update? I'm asking this because when the leaked version was out, there were some rumors that 4.0.4 bricks the phones and messes up the recovery systems.Any of those things true?

There is a brick bug but i dont know the full technical stuff! Maybe someone can elaborate further?

YES brick bug is there in 4.0.4 stock kernel. if you really want to go to 4.0.4 then flash it via odin. after update install siyah first. dont wipe anything or dont restore any backup data before flashing kernel.

thanks a lot guys.since there's a risk in that kernel i think it is better to wait a little more for the jellybean and update to that.

thats what i will suggest...

[Q]S2 baseband for 4.0.3

Well, i've seen in sammfirmware that there is 4.0.3 updates for s2, but the isnt an update for my baseband type, my baseband is i9100xxki4, and i would like to put 4.0.3 on my phone. What could happen if i update my phone with a 4.0.3 version that isnt for my baseband? Or what can i do to get 4.0.3 on my S2?
Thanks in advance.
If you're asking these kinds of questions, you shouldn't for a moment consider putting it on your phone. Wait for an official update (it's not official nor stable, yet).
No official release, you will need Flash either a stock leak, or a custom version based on the stock leak.
For stock version you will need to flash via Odin.
Check out the general section for those or android development section for user modified versions.
I suggest you do some reading as I don't think you fully understand the basics.

i know i would have to flash via odin, but the official release of 4.0.3 for s2 has been dated for march and i dont want to have to wait so long

Just wait or try out a leaked build. We are all in the same situation nothing we can do but wait until a near official build is leaked or until Samsung push an upgrade via kies.

Instead of jumping straight to beta roms, i suggest reading and start off with some customised stock roms. Once your abit more comfortable then proceed with caution. Some of the ICS builds are unstable.

I already have a custom rooted kernel. But i was asking if flashing a 4.0.3 that is not for my PDA( I9100BGKJ3), can do any damage to my phone.

No it won't do any damage, you can flash any i9100 firmware on an i9100 device. But i do recommend you do some reading as I don't think you fully understand the process.
There are chances something can go wrong so ensure you have a full nandroid and backup your efs.

ok so if i update mi i9100 with any i9100 firmware, no damage can be done? then why is there like a thousand i9100 versions of each version of a firmware? like for 2.3.5 android, there are 20 versions for i9100. I dont really understand why there are so many versions then

They're updated android versions, the most latest being 2.3.6, before that was 2.3.5, before that 2.3.4 etc.
With each upgrade brings new roms, countries get different releases, like LA2 from Italy, is the newest 2.3.6 rom. Before that was KL1 also based on 2.3.6.
Do you understand?
Sent from my GT-I9100 using Tapatalk
well... not very much actually xD, if you could explain a little bit more i would apreciate it
Google release incremental updates to the aosp base. For example Apple releases iOS5 and later fix something and pack this into iOS 5.0.1.
Similar to android gingerbread started of as 2.3, they added things etc and now we are upto 2.3.7.
Manufacturers customise the Android versions with their own user interface. With samsung using touchwiz. The most latest version is 2.3.6 from Samsung.
Now Samsung publish updates to different regions. LA2 is the latest 2.3.6 version from Samsung which was Italian phones. Now we can all use this firmware as its for the same device.
Each new build that is released Samsung will change something or it'll be the same version just repackaged for another region, Samsung don't release changelogs so we don't know what's changed until users notice something different.
Before 2.3.6 it was 2.3.5, etc.
Honestly just read the stickies and forums you'll figure it out.

I agree to all others warning you about flashing a new firmware (especially a beta version) as long as you are not absolutely sure about what you are doing. However I can try to answer your question by the experience I made.
I flashed the I9100XXLP2 (having baseband LP1 if I am not mistaken). I then had big difficulties getting a stable and reliable data connection. I was able to solve this problem by flashing just the baseband back to version I9100XWKI1 which I knew was working.
So from my point of view and from what I experienced I could answer you question like this: if the baseband does not work, use the last one you know was working.
Which is the baseband? Csc. Pda. Or phone? Ive already flashed 4.0.3 by the way. Only a few issues with the radio. Gps.... Etc but for the rest its fine.
Sent from my GT-I9100 using Tapatalk
The baseband would be the modem which can be flashed to whatever you want so you get a stable data connection
I will have to agree with the rest seems like you have no idea on how roms/kernels/modems work so if i were you i'd wait for an official release or you can start reading on how flashing works and related stuff

Going back from 4.0.4 to 4.0.3

Hi guys. I am a new user in this forum and I really liked here. The question is I installed the latest official 4.0.4 for the nordic countries. I am on Tugapower 1.1 and on siyah kernel 3.4.1. I did not like 4.0.4 much and I want to go back to zeta rom 3.1. The best rom so far for me. But I saw that many user bricked their phones while trying to go back to aokp 4.0.4 or 4.0.3. I dont want to brick my phone like that. Emmc brick bug says sane chip. I am also on siyah but I am really scared to brick my phone. What can I do for a safe return to 4.0.3. Thanks in advance.
Siyah should be safe. But, for extra care, just flash a 4.0.3 Stock rom in odin and do wipe from there
I have to use 3g and no wifi avalible here. So I cannot download official 4.0.3 within a week or something. I have litening rom 3.6 tar.md5 file. It is 4.0.3. If I flash it, can it cause a brick. If siyah is totally safe, it would be perfect for me.
I wiped for 3 times in siyah when i am on 4.0.4. rom from cwm. Also I flashed a few different 4.0.4 on cwm. Nothing happened. Can 4.0.3 cause a brick. Is installing from cwm more risky than wiping.?
Roms in cwm format often do wipes in their scripts. Siyah is safe, 4.0.3 also
Thank you. In my country it is midnight and I have to sleep. I will flash zeta rom after 10 hrs. I will look at this topic when i woke up and if dont see any problem about flashing zeta rom, i will flash it and get rid of this 4.0.4 rom. Thanks again.
Finally I went back to 4.0.3 without promlem. Siyah is totally safe. I advise siyah to everyone who want to go back to 4.0.3 from 4.0.4.
4.0.3 vs 4.0.4

Latest official released Android version for S2??

Is 4.0.3 the latest official android version for galaxy S2?
maybe, maybe not. It differs from country to country. But in most cases, yes.
There's a site where you can look it up, the status of official updates..but I'm not sure about xda's rules regarding links to other sites. So I'll let you try that out yourself
4.0.4 is latest and soon we will get 4.1.1.
Im on 4.0.3 and KIES says i have the latest version?
Because Kies checkes latest firmware for your CSC.
Visit http://sammobile.com/firmware and choose FW for your own.
Like I said, its probably the latest version for your country (or carrier). 4.0.4 is the latest official firmware, but its not released worldwide and for every operator, in the case of operator branded phones.
Im currently in Germany, it seems that there is no official 4.0.4 update here yet...
Depending how quick the Jelly Bean update arrives, I expect some countries may skip to this instead of having 4.04
Im not in the hurry i bought this phone 4 days ago and i dont want to mess something up, i rather w8 for official updates...
I hear 4.0.4 is pretty buggy. I was looking forward to this update and now I'm thinking, even if it comes to Canada, I may not apply it. Instead wait for 4.1. But I'm reeeeaaally thinking about rooting it now and end this waiting!

4.0.4 kernel may have brick bug on its kernel but it's no way buggy.
In fact, 4.0.4 is the most stable and smoothest Stock ICS version to date
4.0.4 is alot Smoother...
Anyways You can install any another Country's Rom but if you are not aware of what you are Doing. And not aware of Superbrick Bug..
Then i Recommend you to not to Try that..
But if You Still Want to Install Then do a lil research about Superbrick bug 4.0.4 before flashing..

Maybe its one of those firmwares that never got an upgrade to 4.0.4? Some will make the jump directly to 4.1. All assumption, I'm not too familiar with stock. If its official 4.1 you're worried about, you can always get it off samfirmware when an update for the i9100 is released.
Also, if all you were looking for is the stock 4.0.4 UI experience, you could always have had a 4.0.4 sammy rom. Wasn't necessary to unroot et al.
No i unrooted because phone was hanging too much ,and downgraded from 4.0.4 to 4.0.3 so if i want an upgrade back to 4.0.4 ill have to download a stock firmware of 4.0.4 from sammyfirmware and then connect it to odin again and change its firmware again ?
Odd..siyah has never given me any trouble. Phone hangs are anyways usually coz of the rom rather than kernel. But thats OT.
You could do that, yeah. Just be careful not to ever mess around with your phone if you decide to use a firmware that has the emmc bug. For a list of those, refer a sticky in the general section. To be safe..just stay away from stock 4.0.4. Its what I'd do. Rather live with the 4.0.3 UI elements till 4.1 releases than risk rendering a phone completely useless.

[Q] Assistance needed with first root of SG2 i9100

Hi guys. I have been a frequent visitor and learned alot about android and features. I am ready to root my galaxy s2 i9100
My details are :
Android version: 4.04
Model number gt-i9100
Baseband version: i9100XXLQ6
Kernal version: I9100xxlbq-cl911584
build number: IMM76D.XXLQB
I downloaded
ODIN 1.85
CF-Root-SGS2_XX_XEO_LQB-v5.6-CWM5
I am not seeing the original kernal file up for download for my version. What else do I need for my root? Is there any advice such as best method and such. Thank you kindly everyone. Mods, if I posted in the wrong section, please move my thread to the correct location.
That's all you need mate. This kernel is declared safe by Chainfire but as any 4.0.4 kernel should not be used to wipe data because of possibility of emmc cap bug rendering your phone bricked. Root with this kernel but make sure to switch to custom safe one before attempting to wipe data.
Best of luck

Essentially flashing using a 4.04 firmware will brick the phone? or is it when I flash, it will be bad to flash using a 4.04 firmware? Sooo confused.
If anyone has the steps what I should do, please tell me. I am worried about bricking.
If I root the phone, when official JB comes out, will I be able to update?
any help guys? The thread isn't very clear what do I do if I have this kernal. Do I downgrade before rooting?
Insted of flashing that Cf root kernel with Odin or Cwm, flash Siyah 4.1.5.

I actually have the same HW version in my new SGS2 and I have checked with eMMC check (downloaded from Google Play) that my chip is safe from "brick bug"
Now the question is: which kernel to choose, CF or Siyah ? I'm planning to use CyanogenMod 10 on this phone, does kernel version matter at all in this case ?
/edit:
ROM will be either original CM10 or one of the variants (like HellyBean for example)

If GotBrickbug app by CF said your chip is safe than it shouldn't matter what kernel you use. Safe hardware.
Personally I always prefer rooting with CF kernels that match my FW version. Then if you're still unsure about the chip... flash siyah, go to advanced (while still in recovery) > reboot recovery. Then wipe data with siyah kernel just to be on the safe side. I always keep siyah 3.5.2 (the first transisiontl ics/jb kernel) for those purposes. CM10 built in kernels are all considered safe so that's the last time you'll ever be worried about it.
Best of luck, man
Thank you very much, I ran emmc check and I have a sane chip.
if I flash with the CF LBQ, what is my next step?

Samsung releases firmware in various regions and with varied carriers. So I bet that till it is officially released it will take time but when it does you will get OTA if your are on 'STOCK' ROM. but if you move away to custom rom then you will have to update manually.

To revert back assuming you didn't do backup before, download 4.0.4 firmware for your region on sammobile and flash it using odin.. Then to upgrade it when official update are up just hit OTA, kies, or flash it via odin the same way like you flash 4.0.4..
If you don't have idea how to flash then google it, theres plenty much tutorials out there.. hope it helps
Ohhhhhh. I get it. Flash using CF, or CM 10, use triangle app to remove warning triangle and if I need to unroot, flash with 4.04 (my region) using odin? Sound pretty simple. Am I missing any steps?

Actually I get confused myself hehe, by "Flash using CF, or CM 10" you mean flash what? The rest are ok..
Well, let's put this simple, Flash the CF-Root for your phone then you're rooted now, if you want to flash custom rom such as cm10 then flash it (the cm10 zip file to be flashed on recovery mode and don't forget to read the cm10 instruction before & after flashing), if you want to get rid of the triangle then do it with triangle away, finally to unroot and revert to stock, just flash stock firmware via odin..
Hi everyone! I just rooted my phone and it was sooo easy.
Thank you so much. Your advice and help definitely made it much easier than I though.
Yeah, welcome to the rooted world where you can explore more with your phone
