Hi all, I built my sdcard per: http://iamafanof.wordpress.com/2012/...r-nook-tablet/ (built by"Succulent")
My kids have two NT's. With two 16GB Sdcards, one class4 the other class 10. I know class4 is recommended, but one poster in forums said he's taken images of CM built on class4's and applied this image to class 10's in several cases and has had no problems. So I thought what the heck, can't hurt to try, so that's what I did (using Winimage). It booted fine 5 or 6 times for me, and I installed several APK's of games from Humble Bundle . I turned over the Nook to my little girl and she brought it back to me later showing she gets errors on boot, after swiping the lock symbol to unlock it. One is "Unfortunately, Talk has stopped". If you click OK on this, you get ""Unfortunately, Trebuchet has stopped". Clicking OK on this does nothing, it keeps popping up indefinitely. I don't know if the sdcard is hot pluggable (can be removed with power to the tablet), but she did admit to doing this. So I'm wondering if some corruption occurred to the CM build on the sdcard. Has anyone seen these errors? I could reflash it from the image I made off the class 4, but want to understand what happened so we don't run into it again. The funny thing is, I don't recall the startup wizard off the 1st class4 card prompting me with several screens regarding Google crap like it did on the 2nd card which was flashed from the same image. That was even after telling it I had no Google acct hoping it would leave me alone.
can anyone explain the boot menu you get when you press the N button? (I'm not including the faded selections) I'm wondering especially about the recovery options. Here's my menu:
INT BOOT ( I assume will boot to B&N native OS?)
INT RECOVERY ?
SDC RECOVERY ?
SDC BOOT (Iassume, boot to CM10 off sdcard?)
SDC ALTBOOT ?
START FASTBOOT ?

Yes,
internal boot - boots Rom in emmc
Internal recovery - recovery in emmc
Sdcard boot - boots your sdcard Rom.
Sdcard recovery - boots sd card recovery ( keep recovery.img in root of sdcard for it to load recovery)
Sdcard altboot - alternate recovery ( not necessary, unless you want both cwm and twrp at same time)
Fastboot - fastboot mode , fastboot commands to flash .img file etc with this method .
As for your problem, try entering recovery, wipe cache and dalvik cache partition (I've done this on emmc version, never tried sdcard version of any Rom) this may solve the issue. If not try factory reset.
And removing sdcard while device is switched on is called hot swapping , hot plug is a CPU governor. Not sure if sdcard roms are hot swappable, but I think not.

Thanks.
emmc=internal nook memory I assume?
Oh, and...just to clarify, I haven't modified (rooted) my tablet. (you mention factory reset). I should mention that with the sdcard out, it boots B&N OS just fine.
And the part you say about wiping the two caches, so I should go into SD Card Recovery to do that? Once you get into it, you have various choices like the ones you mention? (I'd read that this choice was to backup your NT to sdcard). And please, I want to be very, very careful not to wipe out the B&N stock OS, so please, any detailed instructions you can give so I don't make that mistake, I'd greatly appreciate it. (I see so many posts on these forums about people bricking their Nook tablets it worries me.)

Um I don't know much about how it works for sdcard Rom. I've always only used emmc version. I guess if you were to enter recovery, it would access the stock cache partition by default , and we aren't trying to clear that.
Try this - use titanium backup (only talking about your sdcard Rom here, nothing to do with your stock) and in options, you may be able to wipe your cache or dalvik cache.
Or,
boot into your sdcard Rom, in settings > backup and restore > factory reset. This will delete all user data and return Rom to original Cm10 that you flashed on sdcard.
Or if it's only google talk and trebuchet launcher issue, install a new launcher (go launcher, adw etc) , then use titanium backup to uninstall trebuchet and talk.

From what I see, titanium backup is an android app. If I can't boot to Android (Trebuchet error loops as I said) I don't know how I can install this to do anything? Nor can I install another launcher or go into Settings as the error doesn't let you get any further.
I guess if there was a way to browse files/folders on the sdcard partitions on the sd to manually delete the cache files.....but if they're linux partitions (ext3 or4) you can't do that under windows...

In cwm, enter mounts and backup, then (if) you see /sdcard /cache, mount that and format that ONLY.
Do not format anything else as some options can brick device (Rom, bootdata, factory etc)
Wiping cache is safe (99%)
Again, I have never used sdcard Rom so I don't know what will show up in your recovery. But if you see something like sdcard cache, it can be cleared. If it doesn't specify sdcard, let us assume it refers to stock emmc.

Select SDC Recovery on the Cyanoboot boot menu -- see steps 7 & 8 of the post at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2061536.
If you want to backup the BN stock ROM just in case, see step 9.

I chose sd recovery, chose Backup & Restore, then Backup. It started running right away. It said:
SD Card space free: 228MB

Error while making a backup image of /system!
I plug sdcard into PC card reader and the FAT partition has 0 bytes free. So, appears it ran out of space. I saw your comment about 600MB space being needed. So I'm redoing the partitions now.

Why backing up now when it's not working? Fix your issue, then make a backup. So the next time there's a problem you can restore to working condition.

Well, backing up, I think, was a good suggestion by Digimax. So I'm glad I did it. and now i know how to do it for future. Just in case anything EVER goes wrong, I'll always have that image now on my pc. Bad thing was, apparently B&N nook OS apparently keeps lots of APKs around after installing them. I had to make my 1st fat32 partition over 2GB for the entire backup to process without running out of space. backup size=1.6gb
I ran into lost chains - convert to cluster msgs trying to delete the folder of the first failed backup, but it never would delete even after a chkdsk, so I formatted the card and put the original image back onto it, adjusted the partitions, and then ran into a new probem.....the Cyanomod spinning logo never stopping spinning so it won't boot up. So I give up. I don't know if it's that it's a class 10 card that all these problems are happening. barring any other suggestions, I guess I'll make sure the other NT we have runs stable for a few weeks and if so I'll order another class 4 like that one has.

I don't know about your bootloop issue, but I don't think it's a sdcard class issue.
Anyhow, now that you have stock backup, aren't you going to consider flashing cm10 internally? Do you actually use stock?
Sent from my ST27i
I'm a little leery of it, at least while it's under warranty. I don't know how reliable recovery is.? Besides, my daughter wasn't thrilled with it being down for several days with me fussing with it and asked if she could have her "B&N boot" back I admit It is a bit of a pain having to pull it out of it's case, lift the flap, pop-in or out the sdcard to switch between them. (& also to have to remember to always turn it off b4 removing/inserting)
I may do it in the future though. Thanks for the help
FWIW, you don't have to actually remove the card to boot into stock. Just reboot, hold "n" to get into Cyaonoboot menu and choos "int boot" or something like that, and it will boot to stock with the sd-card still inserted.
Great, thanks for that tip!
Card died
I think many of these symptoms could have been caused by a dying card. It did have a corruption error once, and then it finally completely died. Just for anyone else that runs into these.

FWIW, /cache does not need to be backed up, which should help reduce the backup space requirement.

I should probably post this in the dev forum but I don't have enough posts. And I should probably search first but I'm in this panic mode of being cut off from having a phone so I'm terribly sorry if this has been covered elsewhere.
I was running CM7.0.0.RC4 and decided to upgrade to CM7.0.3 and since all the other updates have gone so extremely well I decide to do this while in my car on a drive.
So first thing I did was Nandroid backup.
Then I wiped the cache and the davlik cache because that's been my recipe for success. Not thinking I also wiped the data/system stuff. Then I installed the CM7 update from a zip file.
I didn't realize what I did until I booted the thing and came up on a screen with none of my icons on it.
So I went into the reboot recovery screen and tried to do a Nandroid recovery but when I did that I just get the HTC screen staring back at me they pops up before anything else and it never seems to go anywhere else. I had to pull the battery to reboot it.
Am I doing the backup wrong? Does the Nandroid ISO have all my settings, programs, etc on it? If it doesn't I might as well do a fresh start.
When you do a Nandroid restore it should restore your data and system partitions as well (including your apps and settings).
When you do the restore, does it give you an error?
First off thank you for the reply.
I didn't see an error so I just did another restore to check.
1 error message pops up and it says
"sd-ext.img not found. Skipping restor of /sd-ext"
When I reboot I get the same thing, it hangs on HTC screen and never goes beyond that.
It's ClockworkMod Recovery 2.5.0.1

It's certainly strange. My suggestion is this:
1) Boot into Clockworkmod
2) Wipe data/factory reset
3) Wipe cache partition
4) Advanced > Wipe dalvik cache
5) Partitions menu > format system
6) Install Cyanogenmod zip from sdcard
7) Install Google Apps zip from sdcard
8) Nandroid > Advanced restore > Restore data (don't restore the other things)
9) Reboot
Good luck.
Oh that's brilliant. I'll try that.
I've done a install of the CM7 and teh google tools and it started downloading all the apps that I had stored on the SD card so the only think I think I lost was some settings and my text messages but I'll try that anyway just to see if it will work. I have all my settings just the way I want them.
So I tried that and it didn't seem to do any better. None of my text messages were saved. I had to redownload all my apps again.
Now my SD card is almost full which doesn't make a whole lot of sense unless somehow the old versions of the programs are still on the SD card in which case if they are how to I clear that space up?
The other thing is while reinstalling some of the apps failed and I cleared the notification list because it was too long to sort through them all but now I can't figure out which apps weren't installed correctly. Can I bring up that error list again?

When you make Nandroid backups, it saves everything on your SD card under the clockworkmod folder. Each backup is saved by the date (GMT) when you did the backup. On a smaller SD card (like the one the phone comes with) even a few of those backups can eat up your SD card space quickly, so you should just go in and delete the ones you don't need from that folder.
When you did the Nandroid backup and Nandroid restore, did you go into ROM Manager to get to Clockworkmod? If so, you should try doing it the proper way -- turn the phone off completely, then use volume down + power to get to Clockworkmod. In general I would avoid using ROM Manager on an S-ON device like the Aria.
Also make sure the USB cable is not plugged in. it makes clockwork act crazy.

I've been doing the restore from the Clockwordmod bootloader menu. Turns out I made a backup of ADW settings and the desktop settings so I'm right back to where I was before the install just in a more round about way.
I am using the SD card that came with it but I'm thinking I might go get a larger one now. Is there any easy way to get all my apps onto the new card? Will just coping the content work?

If your current SD card doesn't have an ext partition on it (i.e., you didn't repartition it), then you can simply copy the entire contents over from the old card to the new card. It's as simple as that.
Ooo
Boot into CWM and go to advanced and then show log. see if you have any errors. I would personally do a partition wipe. If this works, from a running system, go to rom manager and do a fix permissions.
Ooo
Yes, from CWM, 4th option down. 'wipe cache partition'
You will lose only things that are stored in the cache. Similar to clearing cookies on a PC. Android will create a new cache upon next boot (which will take a little longer than normal)
Ooo
Might be your sdcard. Backup everything and format it with SDFormatter then copy your files back,if you keep receiving errors about sdcard you could have a faulty sdcard.
You could also backup your data with titanium backup, boot into CWM make a backup of current ROM and make a fresh install of a new ROM, there are stock, CM7 and MIUI as CWM flashable zips for easy install in CWM pick the one you need, flash it and restore your apps with titanium backup (preferably only app not app+data as you're getting databases errors).
Make a backup of your new ROM in CWM once you finish setting it up as you want for precaution. Remove your old backup.
NOTE: If you install CM7 again make sure you have latest build (Internal: Alpha12 | sdcard: Final). Also verify the md5 of the download so you know its not corrupted.

You mentioned that you flashed CM7 sd image right? so you have to resize the last partition to the end of your sdcard. Last partiton is the one that will act as "sdcard".

Used different software and partition resized. This time set up started which I didn't see before. All seemed fine, started adding some apps from the market since I have no backup.
Suddenly it rebooted and bypassed/ignored the SD card and booted into the previous set up. I powered off, removed/replaced SD card then booted but same thing. I started to post HERE and it rebooted with the SD card! Then it rebooted into the previous set up without the card.
Was.thinking of doing the internal install. Does this indicate a bad SD card or problem with nook seeing it? Considering a surface scan in windows?

It looks like because seems that the Nook Tablet unmount your sdcard or it unmount itself randomly, so if you are running a ROM from sdcard it's logical it will reboot because no system is found. Try with another sdcard if possible to know better if its a software issue or hardware sdcard issue.

Hey guys,
My AT&T Galaxy SII has been working fine on UnNamed 2.2.1 for probably 9 months or more, but I just ran into a weird issue today. After sending a text to someone and hitting the on/off button to turn the screen off, the phone restarted, and now refuses to boot past the Samsung screen. It'll stay on it for 5-10 seconds, go black for a few seconds, and repeat.
I can get into recovery, tried wiping cache, dalvik cache, fix permissions, and it still does the same thing. Fix permissions took quite a while and didn't work the first time. Or I just got impatient. But it worked the second time and didn't fix anything.
Anyway, I mounted the SD to copy my data from the internal SD card. I haven't run a Titanium Backup in a while though. I know I can fix the phone with ODIN, but I was just hoping someone might have another idea to avoid this and avoid losing settings, text messages, etc.
Thanks!

If you can get into recovery, does that mean you can complete a nandroid backup? There's actually an option in Titanium Backup to extract apps from a nandroid backup and restore them in Titanium.
My other thought is a handy little app called Nandroid Manager, which you can find on the Play Store. With it you can restore SMS+MMS messages from a nandroid backup. It also has an option for restoring Apps+App Data, but it doesn't seem as stable as the Titanium option.
As for system settings, I'm afraid you're going to have to set those up again after you wipe and reflash your rom.
Speaking of wiping and flashing...have you considered trying a newer rom? Maybe a Jellybean one?
EDIT: By the way, you don't need to use Odin to flash. Just place the rom .zip on your SD card, and wipe and flash using CWM Recovery.
Nice!
That's one option I had never explored in CWM recovery. Duh. Thanks.
Backing up now.
I guess it is about time to update the ROM. Any suggestions for a current super stable one? Takes a while to read through the last 10 or so pages of all the ROM threads to find out what issues people are having or if it's good to go.
Update:
"Error while making a backup image of /data!"
What all will be lost if I don't have that? Boot image, recovery image, and system backed up correctly.
Edit: might have been due to low disk space - removing a bunch of non essential stuff and will retry.

Are you backing up to internal storage or SD card? Make sure you have about 2GB free on the one you're using, and try it again. If that doesn't work, let me know.
As for a good rom, it depends on what you want. As far as Touchwiz Jellybean, I don't think there's much out there better than ShoStock3. I'm an AOSP man myself, so I prefer SlimBean personally. Task's AOKP is also excellent.
I had selected "backup" which I assume after reading your post is to internal storage, not internal SD card. There was 890MB free on it, and now after trying the backup, it's completely full.
When selecting backup to internal SD card, I get a "Can't mount backup path" error, regardless of if I have /sdcard mounted or unmounted.
After deleting some stuff, it now has plenty of space when I choose the regular backup option. We'll see if it works this time.

Yeah, you can try a different kernel, with a newer version of CWM. I would try the latest AJK. As an ICS/Jellybean kernel, you won't be able to use it to boot up, but you'll still be able to boot into recovery and back up/wipe/flash.

Thanks for your help so far.

Hi, I was having some issues on my Nook Tablet 16gb, so I thought I would format everything (actually format every single item 3x) with the goal of having a fresh boot without issues. But then when I installed Slim Rom or any other ROM it installs them and when I hit "reboot system now" on CWM after installing the NEW Rom, it tries to load and goes to the Big N shape boot animation and then back to CWM.
What would you suggest I do?
Thanks a lot!

Don't press "reboot system now" when you want to exit recovery. Power down system then power it on again. It should boot just fine.

Your boot-loop problem might be due to invalid or missing data in /bootdata resulted from your having wiped this partition, see http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=21381141&postcount=1. You can try restoring the data by flashing flashable_fix_bootloop.zip from http://goo.im/devs/succulent/acclaim/recovery.

Don't press "reboot system now" when you want to exit recovery. Power down system then power it on again. It should boot just fine.

I tried that didn't work, thanks.

Wiping ROM seems to have the effect of triggering a recovery every boot, which if you had the stock recovery should recover all the device info stored there. I had to use a repart.img sdcard which loaded stock 1.4.2 or 1.4.3 (Search for files and guides). Then I used a CWM sdcard and put custom recovery and ROM back on.

The next likely cause of your problem is missing factory-installed device data (e.g., WiFi MAC address, security encryption keys, etc.) that are stored in /rom and /factory partitions which you stated in the OP you had wiped. Unfortunately I am not aware of any way to recover this original set of individual device specific data.
Did you try the stock files like I said before? That got my info back

Yeah I was able to use the thread by Adam to redo my tablet with the normal files for Rom through a SD card boot since the touch was not working.
Thank you, this was a great learning experience in my 5 years of playing around first time to cause a brick...

I'm glad you got it figured out this droid charge i'm on right now used to brick every time i flashed, then started working right one time I've just learned to take it easy and see about fixing things

CWM Bootloop...
Hello all!
It seems I've gotten myself into a bit of trouble with my Nook Tablet. I had been running CM7 for quite some time and finally upgraded to CM10. Very nice! However I landed myself in a CWM boot loop after about a week and have not been able to recover.
First, I attempted to recover back to BN Stock, not knowing that it would not replace CWM with stock recovery. I still have CWM and half of a stock installation (repart.img from bn_142_factory_recovery.zip). From what I understand, the stock BN software is trying to boot to recovery to complete the install, although it was in bootloop before that attempt was made.
Since then, I have tried flashable_fix_bootloop.zip as well as cwm_6.0.2.9_acclaim_recovery_sdcard.img to no avail. I fear that I may have made the mistake of formatting too many things as mentioned at the top of this thread to get into myself here in the first place. What is my next step?
Much appreciated!

You could try what I tell the poster in the topic "At wits end". In the beginning of the topic I described an easy way to make a notable COM card. You can then jump to the end of the topic and try to use my backup file. I will remove access to that file later today and I don't know if it will work at all but at least it's worth a try.

Thank you for your reply, asawi!
I've begun the download. From what I understand, this will give me a bootable MicroSD into CM10. If that is correct and it boots as it should, I can then install this image as firmware in some fashion or at least be able to repair the damage done so that I can reinstall CM10?
[Warranty is of no concern. I bought this Nook Tablet in used condition quite some time ago with intent to use CM as primary OS, hence the use of CM7 for well over a year.]

If, this works (and that's a HUGE IF), twill leave you with a tablet running CM 1O from internal memory.
It is a two step thing though with two big downloads. The one from Iamafanof will make you a bootable CM10 card. Either you can use it as it's intended, or just use it to get into CWM recovery where you can go to backup and restore and try to restore the backup I made. Unzip my file first, like I tell the other poster.
Edit:I realized I had goofed up when posting the first backup. I have now put up another download of the whole "clockworkmod" folder in my Dropbox. Link in the "at wits end" topic. but I will only leave it up for a very limited time.

Using Cyanoboot from the bootable card, I am able to boot into SDC RECOVERY. From there I swap the SD card for another containing your your backup folder, navigate to 'backup and restore'/'restore'/'2013-09-17.16.18.21'. Restore process begins okay, but fails with "Error while restoring /system!"
I then went to 'advanced restore' and attempted restoring /boot, /system, /data, /cache, and /sd-ext individually with these results:
/boot = Restore Complete
/system = Error
/data = Error
/cache = Error
/sd-ext = sd-ext.img not found, Skipping restore...

If /boot was successfully restored, that's what matters the most (please, tell me you did NOT erase /rom, because if you did, you're in a really bad situation). You don't need to restore asawi's FULL backup. If the /boot partition is functioning normally now, you should be able to boot into your internally flashed CWM, wipe data/factory reset, wipe dalvik cache, and wipe system, then FLASH the ROM and gapps. You should not be experiencing the bootloops anymore (make sure to take out the SD card BEFORE rebooting to internal CWM).
CM10 on the Nook Tablet. My daughter forgot her Google password. Tried everything to recover it with Google, no luck. Created a new Google account for her. But how to "set it" (change it) in CM10? As soon as it boots it displays:
Too many pattern attempts
To unlock, sign in with your Google account.
Username:
password:
Nothing happens if I enter in the new account I created for her, it just sits there with the same info displayed.
Side question: What does SDC Recovery do in the boot menu?

It's meant for rebooting into SD-based CWM recovery (assuming that your NT can boot off SD untethered with powered USB).
forgot password
That's the thing. Apparently after you setup your Google account, from then on CM10 boots auto-logging in, but if you'd setup a login "pattern" (grid of dots you trace a pattern on to login), CM10 will then demand the google id/pw) She did have one of those pattern login things setup before.
But basically, there's nothing on the screen besides what I described. If you can tell me how to get to settings when I see no icons or anything, I'd love to do that.
Re: the SD int recovery, I wasn't sure...I thought maybe that would let me access the backup I'd made long ago of the SD card via the boot menu, to maybe get it functional.

You will access recovery and be able to install a backup, but wouldn't that backup have the same password? The one you don't know. Do I understand it correcttly that you are running CM10 from sd card? If so, you can always start over with a freshly made sd card. Very easy if you use Succulent's ready-made image files. CM10: http://iamafanof.wordpress.com/2012/11/18/cm10-0-jellybean-sdcard-img-for-nook-tablet/
(He has CM10.1 as well but personally I still prefer his final CM10. SOlid as a rock and I couldn't see any advantages using the CM10.1 I tried last week, but that's just my opinion))

I had a previous good backup on my PC, from right after I'd built the sdcard and before it was used. (& well before she forgot the password and got locked out like it is now) I copied it to the SD card and did Restore from SD. It restored, I rebooted, and we had the same screen demanding the google id/pw. So, all I can determine from this is that the restore does not FULLy restore what was on the SD card from you backup image.
I saw some other options on these menus, I'd like some clarification on, since I don't want to screw up the Nook part of the tablet!.
On the main CM menu:
"wipe cache partition": Does it wipe a cache partition on the internal Nook card? Or just the SD card?
Under Advanced, reboot recovery: what does this recover exactly? Does it mess with the internal Nook card at all or just the SD card?
Under Advanced, wipe dalvik cache: Does it mess with the internal Nook card at all or just the SD card?
Under Backup and Restore, Advanced Restore: There are 5 restore options here. Are any of them going to mess with the Nook card, or just the ext SD? When I choose Restore off the main menu, and select my image, is it doing all 5 of these steps during the restore ? If not, see below.
Restore Boot (is this what I need? Because the 1st screen I get at boot is this screen asking for the id/pw. What is it restoring FROM?
Restore System, Restore Data, Restore Cache: Do these mess with the internal Nook card at all or just the SD card?
Restore sd-ext: Not sure what this is? How is it different from picking Restore off the main menu and choosing your image and letting it run?
I'd appreciate knowing these things, at least for the future..... If nothing pans out, yes I'll rebuild, it's just time consuming since I customized the partition sizes.

Time consuming? I'd say a grand total of less than an hour to
1. Download and extract the img file
2. Burn image to sd card
3. Open for example Mini Tool Partition Wizard and resize the partitions. The ones you'd want to resize are the last two, and it's very easily done. The steps I took when I redid it just now:
a) Deleted last two partitions
b) created new partition 3, named it DATA (doesn't matter!), made it the size I wanted, made it EXT4 (according to instructions
on Succulent's site), Primary
c) created new partition 4 with all the remaining unallocated memory. FAT32, Primary
I already had the software for burning sd card ( I use WinImage) and MiniToolPartitionWizard installed, but I did a fresh download of the img file, extracted it and made the card. The whole process took about 35 minutes. Having said that, the download is kind of big, so it can take a lot longer than the 5 minutes it took me today.

/cache is always the internal emmc /cache partition, even when running ROM off SD card.
Except for sd-ext, backup/restore operations are relative to the internal emmc partitions (/boot, /recovery, /system, /data, /cache).

you have to go into settings and un sync the google account but since you cant do that cause your locked out i would just reflash the CM image to it all over again , if you have awesome internets it shouldnt take that long to restore your apps and stuff , esp if you already have titanium back ups of app data.
the sdc boots a second reovery image off microsd card ,
if your not gonna miss anything just reflash cm to it , and then restore from the google account once you get the password or if you have the apps backed up ,
