Hi,
I'm having an ongoing problem with my Vibrant not locking onto satellites. I've tried every trick, mod and software update I could find to no avail. After visiting Samsung's web site I saw that every time somebody asked a question about the GPS not working, Samsung's response was that it's a hardware problem and to send the phone in for repair. So I did and this is what happened......
1. I call and give them the exact problem I'm having. That the phone will not see let alone lock onto a real satellite. She emails me a 2day shipping label. I taped a note to my phone also detailing the problem for the tech to see.
2. I get an email a week later saying that they're shipping my phone back to me and this is what they did (Copied from the actual email).....
Original Problem:
Technical Inquiry
GPS
Acquiring Location
Problem found:
DROP CALLS
SW,PRL,OTSL RESET
Solution:
Passed All Functional Testing
After Google'ing what SW,PRL,OTSL RESET meant and finding out that it's just software resets, I called Samsung support back. I asked them if and why the hardware wasn't repaired and reminded them that their web site, in many places says that it's a hardware problem and to send it in for repair and that my phone NEVER DROPPED CALLS. She states that it tested ok and to wait and see. She then tells me that if I receive the phone and still have the same problem, they will find another solution so I wouldn't have to send my phone in again.
3. I received the phone last night. I put my sim and battery back in and turn on the phone. I did nothing but add my gmail account back in so I can download GPSTEST from the Marketplace. After doing so I walked outside and sure enough, after 10 minutes, no satellites. Nothing. This morning I called Samsung and to make a long story short, after talking to level three support, they tell me all they can do is have me send the phone back again.
Here's my problem with Samsung.... I followed their direction and sent my phone in for repair. I twice gave them the EXACT problem I was having. Their own website states that there is a HARDWARE problem. So instead of fixing the exact problem, they find a totally different problem to "fix" instead. They never touched the actual hardware or fixed my problem. They won't take responsibility for their error and find a solution that works. They tell me they don't replace phones, only repair them so they can't send me another phone. They won't even send me a overnight shipping label so I will only be without my phone for 5 days instead of 10. The only solution to my frustration he can offer was to give me an address to send a letter of complaint.
I'm done with Samsung. Is there anybody who can offer a solution to my GPS problem. From what I can tell, it is a hardware problem. Are there any fixes out there or do I just have to get another phone (It'll never be another Samsung)?
Also.. What other recourse with Samsung do I have? It doesn't sit well with me that I just have to accept their excuses and policies that do more for them than the customer.
Thanks
I had the same issue and I just had them send me a replacement. Just go through the live chat on your account, choose the warranty/exchange option, and then tell the rep that you tried all the fixes and updates and nothing works. It took about 15 minutes before the person said they would replace mine. Also, I would talk like you know more about the phone than they do.
Hope Samsung didn't break your gps connector tab
Gps is a hardware issue on vibrant and the best you can get is 25 feet accuracy and 30 sec lock times mostly.
In your case, you do need a replacement that can at least do this much

Why didnt you simply call tmobile and have it swapped?
Did you try the self hardware fix in this forum? Worked wonders for me and many others.

Was this with Samsung or T-mobile?
I had much the same experience with Samsung as cconnell11. I last talked with Samsung a month before 2.2 was available. They assured me that 2.2 would fix it, and there was no point sending it in since they didn't have a repair procedure for it and it would come back the same way it was. I asked what would happen if 2.2 didn't fix it. They said all I could do would be to send a complaint letter.
Naturally 2.2 didn't fix the GPS. I'm thinking about what to do next.
I tried the hardware fix today and I still do not see a big improvement. I have gotten mine down as low as 6 meters but no less. My old MT3G would get really accurate compared to the Vibrant. I have more issues with Wifi than I think I do GPS. I adjusted both antennas this morning but my wifi still isn't stellar. I wish Samsung and T-Mobile would just send you a replacement phone up front and repair your phone and re-use it as a replacement after they repair it. The whole 2 day shipping thing sucks when you need your phone for work.

Wow I only get 10m accuracy most of the times. I know other phones can get upto 6 ~ 9 feet
You can check here http://www.n2yo.com/whats-up/?c=20 to see what satellites are in your view.
If you get a different set you will have zero chance of locking on. If you show no sat numbers initially you are getting no or incorrect GPS assist to give you at least almanac info. If that is case try GPSrestore.
Do you get any grey bars on GPS test app? They need to be greater then 30 db/No to get initial data lock. It appears that Broadcomm GPS firmware does not report any sat lock until at least 3 satellites are locked enabling a 2D fix.
The only significant HW issue reported is the antenna contact. If for some reason the GPS TCXO calibration value has been lost it could take a very long time to get a lock, maybe never. Once it does it will establish a new TCXO calibration value which is then saved for future use. GPSrestore may retrieve factory firmware stored TCXO calibration.
GPSstatus does a network request for assist data that should get you at least correct sats to look for. Use WiFi if you have it with GPSstatus. Just use GPSstatus for assist download, then close and open GPS test.
I have not tried any of the hardware fixes (yet), but have tried the software reset from Samsung with not much change. When I notice that my GPS is having a hard time locking, I turn off Wifi and it locks almost instantly. I can then turn Wifi back on and it seems to keep a lock.
As an example, I can have a lock/see of 0/2 in "GPS Status" app for minutes. I turn off wifi, wait about a minute and get have 5/12. After turning wifi back on (after lock), I still have 5/12.
By comparison, my Galaxy Tab quickly goest to 7/10 with or without Wifi on.
Accuracy (according to Google Maps) is 10m on the Vibrant and 4m on the Tab.
I am thinking that my new golf GPS app is not going to be too useful with only a 10m accuracy.
thank me later
buy a bluetooth gps receiver such as globalsat bt-359 or any sirfIII or better. Next download bluetooth gps provider from the app market. let their powers combine and you vibrant may become a fully functional gps with the purchase of onboard gps vavigation. hehe
My solution
Since originally posting this I've tried the bending the pins up hardware fix to no avail. If I'm outside with a clear sky GPS status shows several satellites and after about 5 minutes will lock onto maybe three or four of them with about 10m accuracy. Maintaining that lock though is tricky. If I get into the car, it looses it. If I turn the phone upside down and have the bottom face the sky I get a lock on 7-10 satellites with about 7m accuracy. Either way it isn't good enough and I found a new problem. Google Maps just doesn't work with the default settings. It locks the phone up no matter what updates you've done. I fixed that though by changing the Operation Mode to MS Based and the Server FQDN Type to AUTO Config. Now it doesn't lock up and works fine with the exception of the GPS problem. I looked at the Samsung car cradle and noticed that it holds the phone sideways so the internal GPS antenna is facing the sky. This should work great but I don't want it attached to my windshield.
My main problem is that I want to use the phone for Geocaching like I did with my LG Optimus. That was a great phone and the GPS was accurate to 5m consistently. So I went ahead a bought a bluetooth GPS receiver. After a lot of research I decided that the Gosget SB-369 was the best option and it was only $30.00 online. This thing is great. I get a good steady lock on 7-10 satellites with 3m accuracy. This is perfect for Geocaching and was better than my Magellan when it worked right (don't buy anything Magellan). It has a hole in it and is small and light enough to be worn around your neck with a lanyard while Geocaching. You could also just put it in your pocket. It's antenna isn't a standard patch type. It's internal, but round and omni-directional and maintains the same lock no matter what way it's facing. I would recommend this to anyone who needs good accuracy for things like golfing and Geocaching.
I'm going to use this as a solution. I get great accuracy that I need at the expense of having another little gadget to carry.
Hi well my phone randomly did this earlyer.
Got home, started making the sound when you plug the charger in constantly, even when the charge was plugged in and taken out again.
Turned it off to restart it and then a battery sign appeared on the screen alternating with a flashing tempreture sign and a warning triangle.
My phone wouldn't turn on again. Took the battery out again and then all my phone would do is put a circle sign on the srceen then a battery, still wouldn't turn on.
My phone randomly turned on 10 minutes later. But still made the battery sound just nowhere near as often.
Phoned orange up to get a replacement, and she told me she would arrange one the next day, she then said there was a problem with replacing them as there is a problem with all galaxy s2's.. or theres a problem with all the galaxy s2 replacements, one of the two.
So..what could be the problem with mine? and is it common?

Samsung just fixed mine for this same problem. Its a problem with the USB host. Basically bit of dust or moisture gets inside the charging port. They will fix it if you take it for repair, or you can do it yourself, if you search on this board you'll find out how.
Mine has now broke a 2nd time though since getting it back a week ago, as mine now wont turn on at all...
These phone makers should give up, or maybe i'm just unlucky.
Never seen this issue on my S2 which I have been using since August last year. I can't see the replacement having the same issue. Fingers crossed.

Its a very common problem. All over the web.
Ah I'm glad about that, this is my second galaxy s2 and I only got it in like September last year, so thought she wasn't going to give me a replacement then lol. I swear these are poor build quality... my last one had poor problems such as the screen not being level (Glass sticking up at left side) and problems like that which is just poor lol. Love the phone however...
Build quality seems to be very poor of these phones, which is ashame, because the phone itself is really really good. Like I say common problem, they will fix it.
Ah cheers, will try to go through Orange when they phone me back tomorrow as I dropped mine a while ago and it's got a rough bit on the corner so I'd prefer a nice new one
My build quality is fine and few users report your problems out of the millions sold .
Dust or moisture in any USB port can cause problems .

Mine started doing the same after less than a month, would make the charge dis-charge sound constantly and I couldn't turn the phone off as it would turn back on.
cleaning out the charging port temporary fixed the problem, but after a few weeks it started happening again.
I brought my phone on 12 Nov 2011 and I returned it to Amazon UK on 23rd January 2012 using Amazons extended return policy around the Christmas period.
I have had the replacement for getting on 3weeks now and this phone has been okay and I have noticed that the battery life is quite a bit better than the other one was.
I did contact samsung before returning it to Amazon but got a useless reply.

Had the same a couple of times, blowing and pulling the charger jack towards the screen does the trick for me.
Hi i too has the same problem. I checked with local samsung service center and they informed that there is some water spots in board and for this we need to replace board and display.
Is it true?
Can anyone help me!!
hi,
I'm thoroughly baffled here .... can anyone help please ? ... it's a long post I'm afraid, since I want to include all the info I can.
recently my beloved Legend suddenly decided it has no signal .. I get 'limited service' and the dreaded red 'X' all the time.
prior to this I had done no changes to phone nor had back cover off or taken the sim out. I have upgraded it to Blayos rom and all has been fine.
after some searching I discovered all the advice re bad antenna and a so called fix by shorting some terminals with a piece of wire.
(exactly which terminals was not made too clear though)
I am not sure though that I actually do have a bad antenna as I have cleaned the 2 under the bottom cover and 'lifted' the mating contacts ...
and have done the same with those under the camera cover.
one other thing I did was to circuit test all the 6 contacts in my phone, and they all 'ring out' ok ...
indeed they all ring out to each other, even with covers off, which suggests to me that there is a good circuit in the phone
still no service, but my GPS gets a lock pretty quickly, does it use the same antenna setup ? ...
I'm not even sure if it does really as I have read that phone will not work with bottom cover off, yet my GPS certainly does !
lastly I doubt it is the sim as it works fine in my wife's phone, but her's does not in mine.
over 190 viewings and no suggestions ...anyone please ?
in desperation I have changed my Radio from 7.13.35.05 to 7.13.35. 13 and got no improvement
Last act of desperation would be returning to stock...
If your not on airplane mode all the time I doubt this is a software issue.

Hope most of you are aware of the problem, yes the ghost touches and partial touchscreen dead(1 cm above the touch buttons mostly in my case)
this is so annoying it happens mostly wen i am in urgent need...i have read many threads but nothing seemed to be working
i am using the sprint cdma version which i got shipped from the USA to INDIA and as there is n sprint store i have to deal with this problem on my own..
i love this phone and don't wanna lose it...neither do i want to spend much
as what i have realised this is not a hardware issue.... i am having hboot 1.5
s-off and locked..every thing stock
i have tried touchscreen booster also but nothing worked....
never dropped the phone and treat it like my baby...
plz someone help me...)
regards JOBAN
i hope this gets fixed as well. i was fortunate enough to have the ghost touches once out of my 9 or 10 months of having this phone
I wonder if it is really a hardware issue because when I used some of the ICS roms it never happens.... I only notice the touch issues when I use a stock based rom.
Mine doesn't happen too often but when it does its really annoying. I've tried to take it into sprint and have them fix the screen but the screen didn't act up when I took it in.... So the sprint techs wouldn't fix anything....
yesterday i did the line draw test when the screen was giving me problem...by *#*#3424#*#*
method... and the lower part of the screen acted weird... but in d morning the screen was okay and no issues were reported not even with the line draw test...
but i know the problem will come back...
and thnx for the reply guys..)
still fix needed... idk y there is no fix for the issue when so many people are facing the problem... maybe because almost ol of them have a nearby sprint store... i don't have one coz i am in INDIA.... so help me..)
???
no help..

Maybe your best bet is to either return it to where you bought it or send it in to HTC for repair... Although I can see its a bit tough shipping thins from India.
My friend had this same issue with his EVO 3D. He had to take it in to Sprint and they replaced the digitizer/lcd and bezel from another phone that was just returned. I guess if you are in India, you could look online to see how much one would cost to get shipped in.

same problem, i too from india. i also got an spare touchscreen, but from fews day problem has not arisen.
btw, my friend just open my phone for changing touch screen, but was unable to change it, but what he has done is tighten the touch screen cable.
now i am not facing any issue. though its just an week. i am testing it.
tnx fo reply
Yea shipping is a major issue here in India... And HTC don't just replace the digitizer, the whole assembly costs 170 $ (converted from Indian rupees around 8000) ...so if nothing woods ill buy a digitizer from eBay.....
And tightened cable sounds good... But let's see if that works..
Maybe the problem is you and not your phone Cheerz!
hello joban,
I got your pm i thought it would be better to post here,
I was getting this ghost problem very frequently. It was like in every 15 to 30 minutes. I tried various roms but moreover it was more in sense.
I was very annoyed as i also have a small white spot.
so, i thought digitizer is an issue. I order one digiter from ebay. its took around 2 months to reach india. I was having a spare fascinate so i kept evo 3d aside till that time.
as i got my digitizer,
i gone to my friend, he is having a mobile shop, i told him that there is some touch problem so i need to change the digitizer. so, he opened my phone, then he disconnect all the cables (Which are very delicate tell him that that connecter will unlock from white side not from the brown side. as the connecter are of two colors brown from the back side and white from the front side.)
after that motherboard got separated. Lower part he said that it is very delicate as its will be difficult to assemble it back. He referred me to some other dude who can do that. he repair phones but basic phones & chinese phones.
he asked me the exact issue, i told me phone behaves weirdly. He said this problem is not with the touchscreen. something else is the problem.
he told me as if touchscreen problem arise it will not work or a specific part will not work.
now. he connected my motherboard back. tighten it. and told me to check.
LOL as this problem is not frequently.
I told him i will test it and let you know. He suggested as if in case problem arises again, he will just hot air the touch screen connecter area and nearby component.
(mann mein toh doubt rehta hi hai yaar , abhi bhi saala tension hai soch raha hu fatafat nikal dallu )
but believe me its been more then a week. I have not faced this issue yet. I am on viper rom, stock kernel. also uncheck on off crt animation as i have seen its having bit problem with sense. and sometimes it act weirdly due to which touch doesnt response, you need to lock and unlock again.
LOL my spare touchscreen is eating dust now.
have you tried calibrating it with the htccalibrate app?

Please can anybody with experience of galaxy s6 repair help.
A couple of weeks ago I turned of my s6 one night, next morning I tried to turn it on but it wouldn't, it was completely unresponsive, black screen no lights, the phone has never been dropped or damaged in anyway or been anywhere near water.
When it was switched off the battery was almost fully charged, so I knew it wasn't a dead battery but I tried the charger anyway. There was no charging light and the back of the phone near the rear camera got quite hot within a couple of minutes. I tried a soft reset but it didn't work.
So then I took it to a local phone shop for repair. The guy in the shop said that he'll send the phone of the workshop for a diagnostic. Anyway he called up and said the motherboard is faulty and needed to replaced. Now he phoned up again and the guy who is fixing the phone is now saying the screen also needs to be replaced, apparently the backlight is not working. Now I know amoled screens do not have any backlight, so I asked him what exactly is wrong with the screen as it's a amoled screen it doesn't have a back light, he said he doesn't know just the engineer said the backlight doesn't work. He said the repair would cost £149.
My question can a faulty motherboard damage the screen? is he what he is saying plausible or is he trying a con?
Thanks in advance for any reply's.

A faulty motherboard can damage the screen (in various ways). All screens have backlight (except for screens like the old Nokia 3310 had) so the layers of your screen might be damaged or have leaked since there is a fluid "sticking" the layers together. This is (obviously) not a software problem, but I would like to know if you were rooted, had any custom ROMs/kernels and did you have XPosed installed. How did you root and did you have a custom recovery?
All my statements are afaik (as far as I know) and based upon real life experiences, if anything I wrote is wrong, feel free to correct me as we are all learning .
Thanks for the reply, I hadn't rooted the phone, all I had done was replace the vodafone firmware to stock firmware as I was no longer on vodafone and wanted to remove all the bloatware, but that was many months ago and everything was working fine.
I just find it odd that a perfectly working phone can be damaged so badly for no obvious reason, it wasn't plugged into the charger, I just turned it off one night put it on my desk, tried to turn it on next morning and it was dead.
So does the repair seem legit to you? I am just a bit weary as I know how easy it would be to charge for parts that aren't necessary. Also is there anyway I could check if the screen has really been changed as the display on my phone was in perfect condition, not a single mark or scratch or any thing to identify it against a brand new screen.

Hmmm, okay.
If you have the right tools you can probably make a mark with a marker or something that won't damage the screen and then when they "replace" it you can check if it is still there. By the way, I don't mean on the screen but on that metal part on the underside of the screen. If you don't want to make such a thing because you maybe don't have the necessary tools, make a tiny scratch that you can locate but won't affect using the phone or not visible unless you really take a close look. If you don't want to do that you can take it to an official Samsung retailer or send it to them (this is probably the most recommended option).
Unfortunately the phone already at the repair shop, I got a call a few days ago telling me that the logic board was damaged and needed to be replaced, I agreed to that repair, now he called again today and said the display also needs to be changed. That's why I'm a bit suspicious, I can understand how the motherboard maybe faulty and may have died, but the display also? maybe he damaged the display when trying to change the motherboard or he's charging for unnecessary work or maybe he's telling the truth and the faulty motherboard killed the display, I don't know.
I was wondering if there's something in the firmware which keeps count of the number of times a part has been replaced or how long the display has been used for or a way I can check the date of the display manufacture without opening the phone.

Unfortunately the phone already at the repair shop, I got a call a few days ago telling me that the logic board was damaged and needed to be replaced, I agreed to that repair, now he called again today and said the display also needs to be changed. Unfortunatly, no,but if the phone is working after the repair that means it is fixed! If not, they will give you a replacement since they test everything to make sure it works.
