I've recently installed Jelly Bean (LS8) on a family member's S2 - and they've been having some trouble with it. I've attached a screenshot with the battery usage (it has <30 minute screen usage if that matters).
This type of drain occurs over Wi-Fi and 3G.
I've ruled out:
- The age of the battery (it's one month old).
- The cellular signal (always 3 - 4 bars over UMTS).
- The Bluetooth radio (I've turned it off and the same battery drain still occurs).
It's also worth noting that the process "Android OS" made the phone stay awake for 5 out of the 10 hours the phone was switched on. I've turned off Google Now and all geo-location services. The Wi-Fi arrows ALWAYS seem to be blinking. However, previously on ICS 4.0.4, leaving Wi-Fi on would not cause any such issues. What could be the problem?

You could try Watchdog task manager which will tell you if a particular process is using an unusually high proportion of your CPU resource.
If you find it is "Android Media Process" then try installing "Rescan Media Root" which will allow you to disable the scanning process. I assume you're rooted...
Have a look at other resource hogs while you're there - I found Facebook to be one of the other culprits.
I have attached two relevant screenshots from BBS. The wakelock "wlan_rx_wake" seems to be the main issue here, but I have no clue what's causing it. If it's important, there was pretty much only one partial wakelock present, ActivityManager-Launch, and for 30 seconds only.
Thanks for the help all, it's much appreciated.

Wlan is wifi related.
Reboot, leave the device sit for 15-30 mins and post partial wakelocks since boot.
As requested. Battery drain meter is buggy so that can be ignored.

That's a hell of a drain you got there (not showing tho).
Try disabling fast dormacy and google now.
Focus on partial wakelocks since boot instead of unplugged (reboot your device and post a screenshot 20 min after that).

Got the same issue and went back to ics 4.0.4 finally.
This ROM seems not to be for everyone. Made a full wipe bevor and after flashing. Re-flashed, powered the battery up to 100% and flashed it. At first it was worse than yours than i made it to last 21 hours till phone died. Installed BBS to find out what's going on but couldn't identify a single problem. Android OS used to much power. Was awake to long. Screen uses to much power as well. Seems to be a totaly f... up installation. Tried it 3 or 4 times but nothing went better significantly.
Hope you will have more luck

You're good there.
What is it that you're using bluetooth for?
Car pairing. I've tried with it off, and the same battery drain occurs.
I'm going to try connecting the phone to an access point with no Internet connection and see if the drain still occurs. If not I'm gonna guess it's something on my network or a remote server trying to initiate a connection... Otherwise it's something on the phone that's causing the issue.
I'll try using Shark to capture the packets, I may be able to find something there.

On my Siyah 6b4 kernel, withstands about 40h, sometimes wifi, 3g, I recomended flash.
I don't want to jump the gun, but it seems as if the OTA fixed the issue. No more Android OS "stay awake" / excessive wlan_rx_wake. I'll give it another day and then confirm back here.

Drain
Dear friends,
I had CM 9 with syhia kernel and my battery last 14/15 hrs of real world usage. I was happy.
I updated to cm10.1 qnd that was stupid... Really broken software.
So I wipe again and flash the omega rom based on ls8. Not more than 9 hrs. So i flashed dorimanx kernel 7.45 and with default profile I was able to hit 11 hrs of moderate use. Using battery profile got me around 13 but the phone behave like a htc hero...
I will see tomorrow and post BBS but in the mean time I would like to know if, in your opinion, this huge drain would get better using a neat sammy rom with a custom kernel.
Thank you

Hey guys
So last night my phone was at around 90% battery before I put it to sleep for the night. I have a habit of hitting ATK every time I turn the phone off, so that's exactly what I did.
No wifi, bluetooth, GPS were on.
I wake up this morning to the phone being completely dead...I start it up and it has 1% battery left.

Also, is "Wifi Sharing" aka tethering? This is weird because I have never even configured this feature, let alone turn it on and do not want it on for risk of being charged!
Thanks,
Elliott
What firmware version? (settings > about phone, post android version, Kernel version and build number)
As in the older versions the Wi-Fi sharing feature has a habit of sucking battery.
Also you shouldn't use ATK's, they do more harm than good on modern high memory devices.
As @veyka says, avoid using ATK, download BetterBatteryStats and look for any wakelocks that are keeping the phone awake during the night.
Thanks guys I'll stop using it.
It's 2.3.3
Kernel version:
2.6.35.7-I9100MUGKG2-CL371789
[email protected] #2
Build number:

There hasn't been any updates for my phone yet...(Bell) and I don't plan on putting a different ROM on my phone.
Is there another app like BetterBatteryStats? I don't really buy apps.
veyka: why would Wifi sharing even be on on my phone? I have never used it and I seriously hope it's not on because I don't want to get charged for tethering :s

See the link in my sig for BBS, theres an XDA edition.
No its not on, its just running in the background draining battery (Bug in the program in older 2.3.3 roms). Or at least it looks like it is. Its a part of the rom, it comes on all SGS2 phones as standard, you shouldn't be being charged.
The only way to freeze/stop the app is to root, and if you want todo that or not is upto you. But use BBS to check first.
Thanks I will use it tonight to see. Are there any special settings I need to set to get it to read what's causing the drain?
This is the first time this has happened so obviously something must have changed which caused a major battery drain.

Sometimes the fuel gauge chip gets confused after doing something that uses a lot of juice between reboots, like flashing zips (After all battery status is just an estimate), it will correct itself over time, this on the otherhand is drain due to buggy app.

I'm not sure this will be much help to me, though...because battery usage was back to normal today...~70% battery life after sitting the whole night...kind of **** but it is what it is.
First of all update your ROM, you're still using 2.3.3, in some 2.3.3 ROM's Wifi sharing bug was present, update it to 2.3.6, Wifi sharing bug will be gone for sure.
Now about your Wakelocks there is not much there other than some Chat service, in Kernel Wakelocks there is dormancy present, so disable it, disabling Fast Dormancy helped a lot of people, it should help you too.

I'd rather wait for an OTA update or an official update to update my phone...
I also read somewhere that turning fast dormancy off can potentially use more data when using the internet, etc. Is that a load of baloney or not?

You may be waiting a LONG time... There is no harm and very little risk using a firmware from Intratech's Official i9100 Firmwares thread. I believe the firmwares in post #2 are from Samsung, and as far as I know the only modification Intratech does is replace the bootloader with one that can be reset using a USB jig.
I also read somewhere that turning fast dormancy off can potentially use more data when using the internet, etc. Is that a load of baloney or not?

From what I understand, fast dormancy causes the connection to drop from HSPA/HSPA+ to 3G if you have NOT been using something to keep an active flow of data under a very small amount of time. So in other words, if you're not loading a web page, or streaming music, and data is generally not flowing to your phone, it will drop the connection to 3G in a few seconds. With fast dormancy turned OFF, it will stay with an HSPA/HSPA+ connection for longer.
There are pros and cons to both sides. You might save a little bit of battery with fast dormancy turned on, but I've found it slows down your online experience, as it takes a few seconds for it to negotiate from 3G back to HSPA/HSPA+.
Hope that makes sense.

Kies sucks. You have to wait for Samsung to update their databases to say your phone in your region has an upgrade (I got tired of waiting after 6 months of being on 2.3.3), and they dictate what version you upgrade to; not always to the latest version.
Check out Intratech's thread I linked above. There are instructions in post 1, official firmwares from Samsung in post 2.
I see.
But how do I know which firmware to download? It's all so confusing...
factory reset and monitor apps installed-simplest way to see what's wrong. If that doesn't help, its gotta be your battery. Also, kill wifi sharing if you're rooted.
Hi
Had a similar prob w/batt drain till rooted and install app called autostarts which basically disabled unnecessary apps from restarting.
Hope that helps.

GPSd would be the GPS Daemon. Means your GPS is active? Do you use Cerebus/Find my Droid/Samsung mobile services? If any of these are active and tracking your device then that might explain it?
I am getting the same issue, I was using gamerzrom rom since a week without issues, yesterday the problem started and the battery is sucked so fast..
Do you have Mobile Defense installed? Using the BetterBatteryStats app it appears that for me the drain is related to a part of Mobile Defense. It was listed as "ars" related to the Mobile Defense process which caused a 55m wakelock & spiked gpsd to use a steady 25% CPU.
In Mobile Defense settings I disabled all backup options and checked all boxes under the Malware scanning preferences. I haven't seen the issue surface in 2 days.

Yesterday My I9300 also has the same problem, and I didn't enable the Samsungdive function.
but I know that it should relate to GPS. below is what i do.
1. I empty all GPS software buffer.
2. Switch off phone,
3. Take out SIM card,
4. Switch on phone, disable wifi,
5. Open the GPS software then search GPS signal,
6. after GPS get your position, then empty the GPS software buffer again.
..............Then the GPSD never drain your battery.
I think this is a bug, the GPS is always searching for the GPS signal so that drain the battery.
Hi all,
I'm totally out of ideas and search terms. Basically after I've rooted my phone and had Psycho Mantis with Siyah kernel on it, the battery was experiencing issues.
To give you an indication, it drains the whole battery in one day with minimal use.
Last week I was out somewhere for a greater portion of the week, and since there are no (decent) receptions, I turned of data. When I got back to civilization, I had my data turned back on.
Since then, the battery was being drained even more! Now my battery will struggle to live half a day.
I've looked at battery stats threads and this and that, installed different battery stats apps, but just don't know what's wrong.
I've became so desperate on this issue that I don't know where to even look further, so if anyone had experienced this problem, or knows whether there are any trustworthy sources that I can investigate this further, please let me know.
Thanks in advance

If you have better battery stats app you can post a dump so I can see what's using your battery. Also download cpu spy from the play store to see if your phone is deep sleeping.
If you have any widgets that sync, delete them, if you're using Facebook use friendcaster, turn off gps and location settings, you can try to underclock your device to 800mhz, use the lowest brightness settings, turn off the hardware keys and bln, you could try indervolting but it can be unstable for some devices.
Hope that helps a little

Hey guys,
I know the battery threads are getting tiring, and I apologize for starting another. I'm having a strange issue, though. I'm getting great screen on time (when using the device) - much, much better than my Galaxy Nexus that would fall 1% per minute used. However, my idle/deep sleep time isn't really that great and is causing me to see a pretty massive battery drain. My apps are about 80% of my power consumption...with hardly any being from the screen. That's super strange to me.
If you look at the attached screenshot, you'll see my Kernel is accounting for 30% of my battery loss. I have no idea how to pin down what's causing it. This screenshot was taken after 2.5 hours with only 23 minutes of screen on time..and I was already down to 78%.

Here are some more screenshots for good measure. I'm trying to pinpoint exactly where my stuff is coming from... I haven't done anything to do the phone besides disable Amazon stuff and Google Movies/Books. Facebook is never syncing, Twitter is every 4 hours...and that's about it besides the usual gmail and stuff.
If you look at my one screenshot from BetterBatteryStats, you'll see that "msm_hsic_host" is the main culprit of kernel wakelocks. I googled it and it brought me to this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=34303488
It seems as if a lot of Nexus 4/Optimus G users are experiencing the same wakelock issues related to that process. No one can seem to figure out what the hell is causing it though.

Can anyone with a well performing DNA comment on what percent of the battery their kernel is using? I'm at an average of 30%, followed closely by the Android System at 15%. Burning through about 10% of total battery per hour while idle. All seems way too high.

I'm seeing roughly the same thing. 22.4% kernel, and 18.9% for android system. Seems very high to me, I hope HTC pushes an update to fix this. Hopefully someone can figure out what is running that is causing this.

I'm seeing roughly the same thing. 22.4% kernel, and 18.9% for android system. Seems very high to me, I hope HTC pushes an update to fix this. Hopefully someone can figure out what is running that is causing this.

Related to the high usage, I have over 2800 wakelocks related to the dialer. Does that seem odd to anyone?
You mean contact sync? Looks way out of line to me I'm going to disable contact sync and see what happens.

Hmm under the same screen for me, I have 1317 wakelocks, but I have com.google.android.gsf.login listed as mine. Contact sync is nowhere to be found.

Dialer is continuing to climb in wakelocks, it's over 3000 now. This is really confusing me as to why it is so high.
Has anyone figured out why this is happening? I have been having a kernel issue as well with mine reaching over 60-70% which is killing my battery!
Seems I am having better luck...
Latest Cubed kernel...

That's because I fixed it a few versions back.

I'm on completely stock. Is there anything I can do to fix that kernel issue? :/

Do you have SetCPU? You could try undervolting it and see if that helps.
I'm not rooted. :-\
i think your over reacting a little bit... I was getting over 32 hours on the stock kernel and it was 18% kernel and 15% system... the problem I had with stock was the VZW Bull$*t that randomly was waking my device to check for sync of stuff I dont use... but with new cubed kernel its down to about 2%

How am I overreacting at all? That is abnormally high usage which is causing a drain.
Mine is also usually around 21-26%, and the Android OS is right behind it at around 19-21%
Am really interested in finding what is causing this, because with 3.5hrs of screentime accounting for less than 12%, cutting this down to an acceptable level alone would make the battery life more than acceptable.

And the last few days it's been using around 32%. This is strange. Funny that HTC can't do something.

Can you guys let me know if all four processor cores are online all the time.you can use SystemTurner or TricksterMod or some similar cpu control app to find out. Some people on the stock kernel are reporting that all four cores are always online sucking down the battery.
Also let me know if you've ever used a custom kernel on this phone.
WiFi shown as being "on" 100% of the time in better stats and I don't have it on. Any ideas why this is?

Try Smart Battery Saver from the Playstore. It has the option for Smart WiFi and might help solve your problem. Sorry, I do not know what caused the problem that made the WiFi shown as being ON 100% of the time.

I have the same issue. Are you stock, rooted, etc?
What's strange is if you look at the "awake" time on your image in the op it looks like it is going to sleep but shows otherwise on wake lock detector and BBS. I'm wondering if it's just a glitch that reports or interprets a permanent wake status when in fact there isn't. Using battery management software I've been able to get a .7%/hr discharge rate when the phone is idle. That's what I would expect, 7% drain in a ten hour period. Please correct me if this is still too high.
I never checked before rooting so I don't know if that was the cause. I'll probably factory reset after I update my baseband to match my firmware (mj4). If that doesn't work I'll probably just give up and just live with it as long as my discharge rate stays low.
I'll update after I'm done.

I'm rooted but running "stock" everything down to the kernel. I don't see any unusual battery drain either. Its just weird and little nuances like this bother me
Please let me know your findings. Is love to pinpoint this.

On this phone are a crazy number of WiFi settings. You may wish to fiddle with them all to get things where you want them. This drove me nuts, too.
Settings, WiFi, menu, advanced (see screen capture). Also running deep sleep app seems to help.
Hope this helps.

I've noticed that there are multiple apps sending out broadcast UDP packets, much more than one would expect. Most are headed to one or another of the google servers in San Jose. I would expect some form of occassional handshaking to sync or update location but not at this rate. Still, what perplexes me is that the discharge rate is within normal limits and the stock battery usage graph still has those little "awake" tics that typically register when the phone wakes up to do some housekeeping. I'm still needing to update my baseband (although I doubt that will make a difference). I'm also going to run a firewall app to see what happens.
This type of troubleshooting is lengthy and boring but since I'm home most of the time at least it offers me some brain drain every few hours (this also has become personal). If my next steps do not resolve this issue then I'll be going back to stock and root again only this time I don't care if I trip knox to 0x1. I like a good challenge but life is too short to take this issue to obsessiveness There is plenty of stuff out in the forums that I need to play with. Got's me some flash fever knocking at my door.

Thanks but my settings are different than yours. Are you rocking a 9500? I see a setting on yours that if I had it I think my problems would be solved.
Edit: I looked at your profile and noticed you're with Sprint as am I. Are you stock or rooted or custom ROM/Kernel? Also, MJ4 or MI5?
MJ5..

Hi alexv59, I'm stock rooted DeOdex freeza MJ4, nothing fancy, stock kernel, TWRP 2.6.3.7 recovery. Just viper4android, 4x1 reboot menu, and some harvested apps from other roms for my personal use. Stock SecSettings.apk. Either more WiFi options were added with MJ4, or you have to go into advanced WiFi settings (tapping the menu key from within WiFi gets you there, you may have to scroll down to see the choice).
Hope this helps.

Just changed the Keep Wi-Fi on during sleep setting to Only when plugged in. I'll monitor the "on" time over the next 24 hours and see if that does the trick. Thanks for the tip. I wasn't aware of these Advanced menu options.
