Hi.
I have on my Galaxy S2 the stock ICS 4.0.3 (XWLP7) with CF-root kernel 5.4. I would like now to upload the phone with ICS 4.0.4 (XWLPU). Can I do it now like always with Odin or should I do first something else with my phone (wipe etc.)?
Thanks in advice
You can do it either way, I prefer doing it via CWM recovery.
To avoid BrickBug flash latest Siyah Kernel first (v4.1.2) before you do any wipe operations.
Then do a full wipe and flash desired rom.

I agree but personally would format system as well prior to flashing.

dwnld the 4.0.4 firmware and flash the same using ODIN since ur upgrading from a stock rom to another one it will not be an issue, but after flashing 4.0.4 u have to re-root your phone, since stock XWLPU 4.0.4 will automatically unroot ur phone

You can just upgrade using Odin, no problem.
Note:
-once you upgrade to 4.0.4, then say goodbye to CF-ROOT kernel.
-Just flash a custom kernel like Siyah, speedmod, Dorimanx, Dream at once.
Why?
-Because stock ICS 4.0.4 kernel has a brick bug enabled on it.
-This bug is also present on all kernels based on stock 4.0.4 kernel. CF-ROOT and all insecure kernels fall into this category
What will happen?
-If after rooting your phone after upgrading to 4.0.4, and you wipe your phone or try ROM backup while running stock/stock based kernels then say goodbye to your phone.
You have been warned

Hi. Thanks for your answear. But I would like to know how should I do it, step by step. I have download it the Sizah kernel 4.12.
1. enter the CWM recovery mode and install the Siyah kernel (install ZIP from external card)
2. reboot the phone or?
3. enter CWM recovery mode again: hold down the volume up button, home button and power button.
4. in CWM recovery I have to choose the wipe data/factory reset
5. after wipe phone reboot
6. enter the Download mode and install the new ROM with Odin
Why should I install the siyah kernel? I still have the cf-root kernel (my phone is rooted).
After upload the new ICS 4.0.4 if I wanna root my phone, I should make the root with Siyah kernel via Odin or? Do you think the Siah kernel is better from CF-root kernel?
Thanks
I thought the brick bug has been taken care of in the latest CF kernels

that was not because of cf-root kernel's ma8 since they r tweaked stock kernel's with EMMC_cap (Brick Bug) removed , hence there would be no problem, as i have used one two days back to root a friends phone which was on stock 4.0.4 LPT firmware without any issues
the brick might be caused by the wrong CF-root being choosen like the one's marked with * that people might have dwnld'd without properly reading why it has been * rd.

OK friend.
So you think is better that I update from rooted ICS 4.0.3 to ICS 4.0.4 with Odin without CWM recovery. It sounds good to me.
After update I should install the new Siyah kernel via Odin too. And then I can do the factory reset or?
Thanks

I had the same feelings two until yesterday,
Two different guys, running Wanamlite LPU ICS 4.0.4 ROM with CF-ROOT kernel (the Rom's default kernel), hardbricked their phones after wiping data in recovery while trying to flash another ROM.

2. You can safely do factory reset with Siyah.

Hey there ^_^
first of all sorry for my English
I was want to ask about the ICS 4.0.4 for the i9100
Because somebody says that this rom may brake my device...
The problem that I have i9100g and upgraded for 4.0.4 but my friend have i9100 and I upgraded his mobile to 4.0.4 (the united kingdom rom)
so hhahahaha I would pay him if his mobile been broken later
Summary is the 4.0.4 for the i9100 will brake my device???????
Thanks ^_^
and sorry it's the first time I write a thread
It will brick your phone if you wipe data or restore nandroid backup through temporary CWM recovery, but only if you stay with 4.0.4 stock kernel (from Samsung).

If you friend doesn't ROOT his phone, he will never BRICK his phone.
However, if he wants to ROOT his phone or if his phone is already rooted, then he must flash a custom kernel e.g Siyah, speedmod, Dorimanx or dream kernel immediately

You can check if your EMMC chip can be bricked ('eMMC check' app from market) if it is known as INSANE, than it is highly possible to brick it.
But...
You will probably brick INSANE device when perform wipe in CWM recovery on stock 4.0.4 kernel.
If you use stock 3e recovery with stock kernel (even with root) or even CWM but with custom kernel with disabled CAP_ERASE function (all actual custom kernels I know) than your phone is safe.
If you are not sure:
1. Use stock firmware without any modyfications or
2. Use stock firmware with root only but stay with 3e recovery or
3. Use stock firmware with custom kernel (root and CWM included) - optimal sollution or
4. Use custom rom with custom kernel included (I'm still not sure about CF-Root kernel becouse it is almost stock kernel, I don't know there is cap_erase disabled or not - in case you want to use it with CWM) or
5. Use 4.0.3 with... anything you like (3e, CWM, root, stock, custom, dualboot...).
i9.0.1.3k galaxy imperator
YES IT WILL BREAK UR PHONE , got mine broken last week ,and just got it back from samsung yesterday and it cost me 240 € !!!
just get into download mode and flash siyah kernel.tar via odin , then downgrade to 4.0.3 , and ofcourse dont think about the word WIPEwhile on stock kernel
my phone works fine Cmiui 4.0.4 now put 4,1,1
Thank you allllllllllllllllll ^_^
really thank you
I think the best idea is to downgrade for 4.0.3 because the device is not mine
But now if I want to downgrade for 4.0.3 do I need to flash a custom kernel first??!!

hi all, found out about this new android update and i was wondering, what i needed to do before upgrading to jelly bean,
i have this android: samsung galaxy s2 GT-I9100
version 2.3.6
baseband I9100XXKL1
kernel [email protected]#66
build number: ChekROM RevoHD v6
im on gingerbread and they have different android version;so im confused, if i could just directly flash this new rom( you may recommend any JB roms too ^^).
thanks in advance!

- Download sms backup & restore, to backup your sms
- Download bookmarks backup, to backup your bookmarks
- to backup your contacts, a)sync them with Google or b) export contacts to SD card or c) download contacts backup & restore to backup contacts
- use titanium backup to backup apps + data or use Es file explorer to backup apps (apk only)
2. perform a Nandroid backup
3. Download a custom stock based ICS 4.0.3 ROM
4. Flash ROM via CWM recovery following these steps:
- boot to CWM recovery
- wipe data/factory reset
- format /system (under mounts and storage)
- flash ROM
- reboot phone
5. There is no need to flash any custom kernel again as custom stock based ROMs are already using one
6. You already know that ROM recommendation is forbidden on XDA. So,
- Visit the thread of the Rom if you're choice,
- follow all the download and flashing instructions on the first post.

I've already answered your question the Paranoid thread
I have read about the eMMC HARDBRICK Bug in Samsung 4.0.4 firmwares . I understand that its the bug with due to the stock kernel and not the ROM.

Can you please advise me what will be the correct procedure (Sequence of steps) for achieving this with risking a brickbug?
What vesion of Kernel Will I need?

I would suggest u to first upgrade the phone to ICS v4.0.3 which does not have the Brick Bug ( only ICS 4.0.4 and that to its stock kernel have it).
Then Root ur phone using 'Siyah Kernel for S2' from ODIN to root and install latest CWM recovery, from which u can flash the Custom rom of ur choice
PS- since Rooting ur phone is much easier on ICS than GB, as u have more options with ICS

Reviving the thread a bit:
Is there a reason not to flash 4.1.2 (Stock Custom) directly over 2.3.3?
can i use SiyahKernel S2-v5.0.1 on stock 4.0.4 rooted
i used http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1501719 method to root
i am running stock 4.0.4 with root
is this kernal safe for me http://www.gokhanmoral.com/?p=1536
the kernal is SiyahKernel S2-v5.0.1
thanks
No v5.0.1 are used for roms with new mali drivers i believe.(someone correct me if it works for stock roms) You can use v4.1.5. Although its safer to flash ICS 4.0.3.

Yea, its pretty much safe to use this Kernel with Samsung Stock ROM 4.0.4 to get rid of brickbug. I've tried it and its working fine.
Now I'm going to try one of those custom ROMs available here
as I can't wait anymore for Samsung to provide me the latest Jelly Bean ROM.
Go ahead with flashing Siyan v5.01, its safe.

Hereticnine.

New mali drivers?? Anyway you should realize the most suggested method to avoid brick bug in 4.0.4 ics is installing Siyah 5.0.1 because it's the stablest kernel in many ways.

yes its absolutely safe! i had siyah kernel 4.1.5 and just updated ti to siyah 5.0.1, every thing fine and i got an app stweaks, and i feel nthing difference by the way!
another thing-->it feels that my battery is draining a bit faster thn before.
i would seggest that update ur kernel only and only if u want to run cynogenmod10 JB on it, otherwise leave fone with siyah v4.1.5!
I want to do the same on SGS2
Presently running 4.0.3
I intend to use Philz temporary CWM recovery to flash the Siyah 5.0.1 and CM 10.1
Do-able?
Thanks

Just reboot into download mode and flash the .tar version of Siyah. No need to go through any other kernels/recovery first.
