[Xperia P]Flashing a kernel over official ICS - Sony Xperia P, U, Sola, Go

Hello there
Yesterday i did the root trick for 6.1.1.B.1.54 with flashtool, where you downgrade to an earlier kernel (.544) in flashmode, push superSU and then upgrade again to .54.
In the dev forum for the Xperia P i have found the Sliding_XP kernel, which i want to install.
The question is, do I need an unlocked bootloader to do this? Or is it just flashable via flashtool?
Also, it says in the kernel's thread that the package also contains CWM recovery. That removes the fastboot mode, right? (since it is accessible via vol down, same as for fastboot)
Sorry for sounding like an xda-noob (Yeah, i've seen the video and I should hate myself).
Thanks in advance!

It doesn't remove anything.
Volume down is for flashmode btw.
Sent from my Xperia U using xda premium

Oh, sorry. I rechecked and yeah, it is the flash mode. fastboot is volume up.
The question remains: Do i heed an unlocked bootloader to install this?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2002202
As I said, i have the rooted 6.1.1.B.1.54 update, and my bootloader is locked, no other hacks have been done to the phone

I see. I know that OTA updates are no longer available upon unlocking your bootloader, nor some services such as trackid (which doesn't bother me), or Download muic info in the walkman app. Are there any more disadvantages?
Also, when Sony releases the official promised JB update, the only way to update it will be with the ftf file, right?

First of all OTA updates not available and others you know that.....
next is your warranty will be void most probably......
Sony officially said that it wont release JB for SOLA so anyhow you wont require OTA for that......
and i bet you will get JB only through XDA.......

I don't have a sola, i have a P
Alright, so I have unlocked my bootloader. (Horray.) It did delete everything, but for some reason, SuperSU is still there.I hope that rooting before unlocking the BL did not do anything bad to it.
As a total noob who doesn't want to brick his phone, someone please tell me what exactly i need to do now in order to install the kernel mentioned above
In other words, how exactly do you install kernels? With recovery? I don't have that installed in my phone. Also it says that the kernel comes bundled with CWM. This confuses me.
What mode do I need to select in order to flash it on my Xperia P? Flashmode or Fastboot?
Also, in case anything goes wrong and my phone gets bricked while flashing, is there any chance that the phone might be permanently bricked, as in not revivable via either entering fastboot or flashmode to flash a new official fresh firmware file?

You can't root on fw .62! You must flash back to .42 (use wotanserver) and then root. After that, update your phone by OTA (on the air update) to .62!
Completely untrue. You can root - read the posts.
In a nutshell, because posters fail to bother to read everything:
Copy Rootxperia.zip to the SD card
Factory reset (don't format the SD card)
Use flashtool or Wotan to install your version of 0.62
Use fastboot to BOOT (not flash) recoveryNeo.img
When CWM boots, install Rootxperia.zip
Done
(CWM in this instance is hot booted, not "installed")

This method works only with unlocked bootloader. By unlocking bootloader you loose warranty and some phones has no unlockable bootloader.
The OP has an unlocked bootloader... according to previous posts. My response reflects that.
Unlocking BL MAY affect your warranty... in practice highly unlikely.
Phones that cannot be unlocked are likely carrier locked which is a whole new moral ballgame. The desire to mess with these is dubious at best. Users intending to modify their phones should have unlocked carrier-free phones.
My phone carrier unlocked, but bootloader no

Also, if you be carefull and no scarry, unlock bootloader by tespin method (use link http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1409269 ), then root (use link http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1431033 ) and be sure to lock bootloader after that!

If you accidentaly update officaly firmware, for example, ICS will relise and you go update (with unoffically unlocked bootloader it is possible), you brick phone!

Well, you see, I wouldn't agree with you
You know someone who did that?
OTA update brick phones with officially unlocked BL. Since the ones unlocked via test point can use all official tools(PCC, SEUS) I believe they can also use OTA, since their BL's are patched.
Also, how can you accidentally update it?

With officaly unlocked bootloader OTA update not possible!
Some customers with unlocked boot loaders have experienced problems when they are accepting over the air upgrades (FOTA - Firmware upgrade Over The Air). For customers that have unlocked the boot loader, please do not accept any over the air upgrades. For additional information, check out the hints and tips from the community on the XDA forum.

Yes, that is official statement for BL unlocked via official way. Since those phones can't use SEUS or PCC because those programs can realize someone messed with OS, but FOTA is dumb and can't realize that, so she still try that's when Mr. brick comes into town
Unofficially unlocked BL's can use SEUS and PCC so I believe they can also use FOTA. All brick's came from officially unlocked phones. I haven't heard any case where it happen with unofficially unlocked BL.
If you show me one example they I will change my way of thinking

By my opinoin the easiest way is to unlock the boot loader and then you can do what ever you want..otherwise I would recommand wotan..
everything is possible, almost then, but indeed you cant root 62, but if you downgrade to 42 do this: tick only wiping data & cache with flashtool, restart your phone and then you are on 42 not so hard to do it if you on unlocked bl, but i think thats already explained sorry for that then, but it must work i try it many times on my own phone and lock and unlock my bl to several times, so good luck with it.
Flashing original sony ericsson kernel dont need bl unlocked?
And can anyone upload .42 kernel here in ftf file?
Becouse where iam found its have same size as .62 kernel

[Q] Help with my Xperia Mini Pro bootloader :)

So,I've rooted and unlock its bootloader for a long time.I also install my phone ClockWorkMod Recovery and etc. other root stuff (My android is 2.3.4 .58 Firmware)
So,today I thought I will finally relock my bootloader as my phone will receive a new ICS official from Sony Ericsson anytime from now until end of June,so I download a relock bootloader ftf file (I've searched it in the internet, and download the right file). After I flashed it (I've enabled USB debugging before shut down my phone and I also sure my phone is in flash mode during flash),my phone WON'T boot up...I don't know what happen,so I'm currently fixing it by using WotanServer, and it downloading in progress now (My x10 Mini Pro bricked 5 times, and I fix it 5 times by myself without whining )
So,I wanna ask you guys :
Why my phone won't boot up?Although the bootloader is locked by Flashtool, but it won't boot up I've stock FIRMWARE and stock KERNEL in my phone...never modified it,only root, unlock its bootloader and flash CWM in it...
Thanks for reading I hope you can answer my question
Regards,
UchihaDareNial
Uhm, since WotanServer installs also stock kernel back...doesn't it require unlocked bootloader?
I am not sure, but that would make sense with all other kernel installations also.
Unlock bootloader, install firmware and kernel with WotanServer again, boot and relock bootloader.

Thanks for the information man,by the way,I just restore my phone using WotanServer and WotanServer will always be my trust to restore my phone if it got a brick or something like that
I restore my phone with Firmware .58 and I rooted it using ZergRush, and update it using OTA [My phone automatically bootloader locked] (I install US Generic xD even I live in Malaysia,so I got Sk17a instead of Sk17i) and now I got .62 firmware with root access in my phone

PC Companion doesn't work with unlocked bootloader at all.
You might be correct, as I have never tried update/repair via PC Companion.

I know, the point is that it's not necessary for flashing stock kernel bootloader to be unlocked.I think it's pretty obvious, if it didn't update with locked bootloader then sony would have to force users to unlock bootloader or give unlocked phones or never update kernel.

[XU] Huge Problems Xperia U

Ok guys, I'm in deep sh*t -- let me start off.
I have an Xperia U rooted and locked BL, ever since JB was ported I wanted to try it, so I unlocked my BL by this method using flashtool --
1. Install Flashboot and Fastboot drivers of Flashtool (setup file will be on C:\Flashtool\drivers or similar place).
2. Turn on your phone, and connect with usb debugging on.
3. Go to Plugins-> Bootloader Unlock option, start it.
4. Now it will ask to disconnect your phone and reboot in FLASHMODE.
5. Again reboot your phone in FASTBOOT mode.
6. It will show a window with your IMEI number, insert your unlock key and click "unlock".
7. The device will reboot and you are done!
Everything was fine, I rebooted my phone. Download music info was FCing and I knew this was normal coz we lose our DRM keys when we unlock BL (Right?) So, After I did that, I wanted to try out Sliding XU kernel for XU so I downloaded it and flashed the .zip via CWM. Now the problems begin -- My phone didn't boot up at all, no Sony logo nothing, just 1 vibra ( Soft-Brick right? ). That shouldn't have happened right? Coz I was bootloader unlocked.
So I got worried and thought of reverting back to stock, So I reflashed stock generic ftf via flashtool ( B.54 ftf ). I wanted to root and install CWN so that I could restore my nandroid backup ( Yes! I made a backup ), But now my phone wouldnt root! I tried binary's root ( any droid and nothing, no root! (Error was -- "RECONNECT EXTERNAL MEMORY & TRY AGAIN"). I couldnt install CWM either ( atis112's). I used that coz all this time I used mods made for locked BL, I didnt know which to use for unlocked BL (noob regarding BL).
Started getting even more worried, So i tried flashing a custom pre-rooted kernel, even that didnt happen via flashtool, Here the error was " Root Required" or something, dont remember properly. I thought once I unlocked my BL, I could flash any kernel without root! (am I wrong?).
I dont even know if my BL is unlocked properly or not, since there is no way to know its status. So I tried download music info via walkman, It worked! Isnt it not supposed to work? I did it till 1% only of 524 songs ( Bad data plan, couldnt afford to lose bandwidth )
Now i dont know what to do bout rooting, unlocking BL or anything, BTW the phone is fine with B.54 firmware, just no root. Please Help!
P.S -- Long post, but please take a couple of minutes to help me out, sorry and thanks
Sorry bro, lemme help.1 You have to do some wipes in CWM when flashing kernels. 2 You can't root B.1.54 unless you flash .10 kernel, root then flash 54 kernel. 3 Yes you need root to flash a kernel
Press thanks?

Ok, thanks for your help, but first things first-- need a lil' more help from you
1. How do I root B.54? You said flash .10 kernel, I've never flashed a kernel before and I don't know how to do it, so help here.
2. Is my BL locked or unlocked now? Any way of knowing its status?
3. Since .89 firmware came out recently, Isnt it better to install that rather than B.54? And the method to root it is the same right?
4. Finally, Is the method I mentioned earlier to unlock BL correct? Did I do it right?
Well you have to flash 6.1.1.B.1.10 in flashtool, exclude everyting except the kernel. Turn it on, enable USB debugging (everything will look weird) ,root it then flash .54 kernel in the same way
Dial *#*#7378423#*#* and go into customization. It should say Bootloader Unlocked: Yes
You can flash the latest, it is stabler. Root the same way.
Yeah, if it says you did it in service menu.

You did not unlock bootloader because you booted phone into flashmode.

[Q] Trouble relocking bootloader on C6802

Hi, I'm having some issues relocking my bootloader, as I'd like to go back to OTA updates.
I'm currently running the below ftf and kernel:
C6802_14.3.A.0.681_Generic HK.ftf
681_jackie099.img (by jackie099)
I tried relocking the bootloader using Flashtool 0.9.15, and according to flashtool it worked, but it's nothing but boot loops after that...
I thought that maybe I need to go back to a stock kernel first, but unfortunately, I can't find one after extensive googling...
Any ideas?
All the FTFs have a kernel in them.
Do you still want root? OTAs probably wont work with root. If you want pure stock just flash a FTF after restoring the TA backup.

having a modified kernel like jackies wont allow you to boot. (locked bootloaders will only permit a totally stock ROM)
So to have root and recovery you will need to have an unlocked bootloader.
actually... you could flash your ROM... flash jackies kernel and then root.
Then flash the stock kernel.
... and then you can lock your bootloader and still have root.
.. and it will boot.

You unlock the bootloader to enable boot custom kernels not made by Sony. If you relock it won't boot custome kernels because the bootloader is "locked" to boot Sony kernels only.
You wank kitkat, bootloader must be unlockedm and there is no real reason you will want to relock your phone.

PC companion is updated regardless of your bootloader, it will update without a phone being connected.
I don't think you can restore backups to custom non-tock-based ROMs with PCC anyway, you must choose stock(or custom stock-based) or custom ROM.
If you want to re-lock, you must use stock ROM and kitkat does not work with it.
