Hey guys,
I have been reading around the wlan_rx_wakelock since days now since I cannot get rid of this battery drain and just wanted to collect all the information out there and the solutions that worked for some people.
If you put your phone into airplane mode or just simply turn off WiFi you will see in better battery stats that the wlan_rx_wake wakelock will vanish and a deleted_wakelocks will turn up with a similar up time and battery drain percentage.
Some people wake up with a drained phone in the morning, some have a horrendous battery drain when in work on the work/school/university WiFi. Some people have found solutions, but for most it could be tracked back to a certain WiFi network. The wakelock doesn't appear when signed in on the home WiFi, but is present when at work. This shows it is not a problem of the phone itself, but the WIFI AP is the cause.
This is the basic information from the BBS thread here:
wlan_rx
Author(s): sven, credits to Entropy512 @xda-dev
Ranking: n/a
Speaking Name: wlan_rx
Rationale: Wifi chip received a packet from somewhere - On a Galaxy S II, lots of these combined with the fact that the device takes 650 msec to resume from suspend and 150 to go back to sleep means that occasional wifi packets coming in will skyrocket Android OS usage. As an extreme example, run the following from a Linux box when wifi sleep policy is "never" and watch your deep sleep percentages plummet, your battery drain, and Android OS skyrocket: ping -i 5 <wifi IP address of phone>

To investigate what traffic is causing the constant wifi usage you can use Shark or Network Log to get a better resolution of the actual network traffic (source):
1. Shark for Android - Capture the packets with this. Use wireshark on your PC/MAC to read the captures.
2. Network Log (also in play store) : Will help identify which applications are using your network, on a per packet basis. Note, this is a higher level capture than Shark for Android. (As in, shark will capture every packet that hits the interface. Network log will not.)
Solutions:
use a static IP instead of DHCP (you may have to set a static IP every time you sign up in that particular network)
disable IPv6 protocol on your phone (Dorimanx kernels have an option for this in ST tweaks or you can use "Android Firewall" for this
update your router firmware
buy a gaming adapter for your Wifi network that gets the DHCP IP adress, but gives your phone a static IP (source)
optimise router settings: click
Windows network is causing the problem - solution here: click
Change wireless network encryption method, change wifi channel, instead of using auto baseband use only 2.4 or 5GHz baseband (Wi - Fi - advanced - Wi - Fi frequency band)
turn off uPNP in router/AP
t urn off netbios in windows network
Thoravukk FAQ tells you: Q. My device not entering deep sleep if i use Wifi?
A: That's not a Kernel issue! It's a Router and (Windows 7) Network problem. Disable IPv6, IP Helper service, shell hardware detection service and the Windows Media Player Network Sharing Service. Source: here
try different kernels: see below
Apps that have been demonstrated to cause the wakelock:
Dropbox (October 2012)
Several people have been able to get rid of this problem by using a different kernel:
If your wlan_rx wakelock is caused by the IPv6 problem then switching to Dorimanx 7.4x kernel will get rid of this problem as this kernel disables IPv6 for you.
People with Galaxy Nexus phones got rid of the problem by using the CMplusTuna kernel, which is not available for SGS2 unfortunately.
Another user got rid of the problem using "lean kernel" available for GNex and SGSIII.
i9300 users might get rid of it by using the Perseus Kernel "It's caused by the OS enabling some unwanted network filters, I disabled this now in Perseus 26.1 and it should also remove all drain." Source: here
Following up on network filtering and multicast I found this code project which seems to be merged into CM10.1:
bcmdhd: Change packet filter settings to block multicast
A common complaint of users is that battery life on wifi
is very poor, with frequent wlan_rx_wake wakelocks.
It turns out Samsung "opened up" the packet filter
settings from Gingerbread to ICS.
This makes them match the tuna configuration, minus
the filter to allow mDNS through (which lets a bunch
of other stuff through too.)
The original patch reverted to Gingerbread settings,
but it seems like the filter definitions changed
from GB to ICS.

Several users reported that they only have this problem in their work/school/university network. Many users mentioned a network called "eduroam" which is a worldwide network in universities besides the local network (which normally uses the same equipment). So it seems the WiFi equipment/settings cause our phones to be constantly awake. And many report they don't have good 3G reception in these kind of buildings, so they can't just go without WiFi sadly. I can confirm this as I only have the battery drain here in my university.
Also a very interesting in the common Networking forum: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1738171
Kernel's I have tried without any luck:
Siyah 5.0.1
Dorimanx:7.44
Fluxi kernel: http://fluxi.xda-hosting.de/download.php?fname=./data/ota/files/fluxi-kernel-sgs2-XX.03-beta1.zip
N.E.A.K kernel: 2.1.2x http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1576355
Shun Andromeda: 2-2-7
Dream Kernel: 2.7.5
Abyss Kernel: 2.0 F4
Maybe something is hidden in those Nexus kernels that would also work for the SGSII. Unfortunately I haven't got a clue about coding, so I am hoping that if we help together we find a solution.
Thanks for any input.

GB was wifi-awesome, ICS & JB came with that devious wlan wakelock.
Sent from the little guy
Yeah. JB seems to have it, too. Installed CM10.1 to get rid of it, but same problem unfortunately.
I have the same problem on both my tablet (TF300) and Samsung Galaxy S2.
When WiFi was enabled on my tablet and policy set to "Keep WiFi on during sleep = always) the battery went from 100% to 40 in 8 hours.
The next day I disabled WiFi completely and let the tablet be for 8 hours again, when I got home I still had 99%
Today I'm trying with WiFi enabled but WiFi-policy set to Never instead.
The reason why I've always used always as policy is that I read somewhere (could be a year maybe) that the battery would last longer with that setting. But that doesn't seem to apply to jellybean as it did with ICS.
Sorry for rambling.
I've tried disabling IPv6 and updated my router firmware as well, I'll get back with results later.
Cheers!
Yeah, it seems to respond better to static IP config than dynamic IP.
F&%@ing wifi eats my battery alive.

So i've had the same problem where my galaxy s3's battery has just gone to 0 in ~10 hours and i finally found the fix for it, this is what's causing it for me and might be what's causing it for you to, anyhow i'm gonna go step by step with what i did to find the culprit.
I downloaded an app called Network Log and let it log some of my traffic, i quickly found that packets where beeing sent by 192.168.1.74 wich is not any android device but my main computer and there i found the source of the problem, i was then searching around and stumbled across this post, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=25876666&postcount=3
I found this line in the post,
Q: Wakelocks "wlan_rx_wake" wake up my device constantly what I can do about it?
A: The problem is neither Android nor the kernel, but the router and the (Windows7) network. In the network properties, uncheck "IPv6", disable the service "IP Helper", "Shell Hardware Detection" and "Windows Media Player Network Sharing Service", which provide ongoing Traffic. Then they scored again 98% of deep sleep.

and i decided to look in to it, i started the "run" command in windows and wrote "services.msc" wich then boots up you services that's started by windows, after that it's pretty simple.
Find the line called Ip Helper and stop it after that right click it and chose properties and decided the start method as inactive, after that look up the "Windows Media Player Network Sharing Service" and do the exact same thing there, this actually fixed it, my computer for some reason got stuck on sending useless packets over the network and was sending it to my galaxy s3 along with my mothers galaxy note 10.1 (no other android devices where seeing this thou for some reason) and after setting those 2 to disable i now have had my phone at 99% battery for over an hour with wifi active.
I do hope this helps and i'm gonna post this in the other wifi_rx_wake posts i can find.

Hey,
Thanks for your input. I had read that before, but unfortunately this problem only occurs for me (and many others) in work/university. So I wonder if there is a way just to block the requests on our phones rather than turning off these services on the computers.

It's an IP conflict, dynamic IP will drain your battery faster than Static.
Sent from the little guy
That's where i belive you're wrong, i have static ips on all my machines in my home so an ip conflict i highly doubt. As i said in my previous post, it shows that it's a specific ip that's sending packets to my phone constantly.
@damnation333 i can't really answer that i'm afraid, however you should be able to look up the ip and ask your ip department of the school/university if they could have a talk with the owner of the ip Network log does show what ip it is that's sending the packets .

You can specify in the wifi settings of android that it only should use 2.4 or 5GHz networks. Have a look in your advanced wifi settings.

have the same issue on optimus 4x hd. had it when we had 10a and 10b (ICS) firmwares, but after lg pushed 10f firmware (one of theirs changelog beeing: "improved wifi during sleep", the problem was gone.
So, before 10f firmware, when you ping your phone, the response was imediatelly, after 10f the ping response came only after a while like it should be during sleep.
(testing on iphone is the same result, it only asnswers ping request after a while, when it its sleeping)
So, after changing from 10f (ICS) to cyanogenmod (10.1.2) , the problem came back, because CM didnt probably implement this particuly fix. so in my opinion its a rom or kernell bug (i guess kernel) and nothig regarding to network, because i didnt change anything in my network & computers, only changed the ROM.

you can configure this on your wifi router. if your wifi ap is basic one it might not have this settings. but most routers come with option to set high priority, qos etc.
Im at work tho mate.. im sure this can be done with just my phone

Cannot see how a receiver can receive priority over others without it being set at source .
jje
The whole point of Traffic shaping would be lost if any device can set itself to a higher priority.
Some packets can set an URG-flag which stands for least-latency routing instead of least-cost routing however it's still the router's call if he respects this and if yes how he treats them.
Something else is probably incorrectly configured. It's been reported several times that the S3 is very picky when several Wifi AP's with the same name (SSID) and in reach of each other are configured on the same channel (frequency). However most hobby-admins even know not to do that, so if your company is doing it you might suggest basic network training for your IT guys. (The basics of the Wifi protocol are in roughly the 3. semester at university)
You might want to try whether forcing the device to 5Ghz band will make it better since that band is far less crowded.
Also you could check WHAT causes the issues. Often it's not the bandwith by itself but either the router's connection table (a VPN to an external server is a very good but cumbersome solution) or the DHCP (use OpenDNS or Google DNS)

Can this be a Hardware issue?? any insights plz..
It's definitely not a solution to your problem, but you might try installing Wifi Analyzer which is free from the Play Store to gather more information. WiFi drops can sometimes be attributed to channel conflicts between multiple access points, and that tool will help you see how strong your signal is and what might be interfering.

ramjet73.. thanks a ton.. interesting observation.. my wifi router is placed hardly meters from my desk with almost no blockage is between. normally the signal strength is -85dBM. but when wifi analyzer is switched on it increases to -65dBM(goes down once its closed..
Its currently on Channel 6 and all the channels are with full star ratings.
Only devices attached to my router is a wired desktop, and on wifi a laptop and 2 android phones.
The problem has not occurred while wifi analyzer was switched on.
Will update after further observation.
another option could be to go into you settings and while in the wifi section, hit menu and and go to advanced and check the box for best wireless etc...
That might help as well.

Hello all, I have a Samsung Galaxy S3 GT-I9300 with Stock 4.1.2 unrooted and baseband version I9300DXEMB1. The problem I have is when I try to connect with my home WiFi from my room, it says Authentication Error Occurred. I have to be directly infront of the router then it'll connect and allow me to load webpages.
If I stand in front of the router and connect, It will get connected without any problems but as soon as I return back to my room or any other place that is more than 3 feet away from the router, it wouldnt load any webpages or anything that requires an Internet connection. Then when I toggle WiFi off and on again, the authentication error occurred problem will be back. It's like my phone can only connect and load webpages when it is 1cm in front of the router. Does anyone here have any suggestion on how to help me? I'm pretty sure that it is not my router's problem because my computer and Galaxy S4 in my room can connect just fine and load webpages just fine. I've tried searching the Internet for solutions but have not found anyone with the exact same problem with range/signal strength hence I started this thread.

If it connects to other routers/ wifi its your router a problem .
I had these kinds of problems with two stock ROMs, do not remember the exact versions, but when I upgraded the problems were gone. That was while using the exact same Yank kernel, so it doesn't seem kernel related. It is a very annoying bug though! But upgrading ROM will fix it, I know for a fact that GNA5 doesn't have this bug.
Have you tried using wifi on other places on the same phone?

Since I saw that lots of people have the same problem. I like many other, I have done everything said here, and all over the web.
Here is what I did to fix my problem...
1 - Check if you have any special char on the wi-fi SSID like "!,@,',ã,á,~,ç,ã" etc...
and Remove it.
2 - On your router check if you have ip adress ranged configured like: 192.168.1.100 to 192.168.1.150, and change it to the wide range: 192.168.1.1 to 192.168.1.254
This two steps solved my problem after I have tried everything stated here and over the web
I just registered to share this and hope to help someone.

Thanks for suggestions, I've also tried Static IP and checked my router settings and that it doesnt have those punctuations in the SSID and also the start and end IP is pretty wide from 192.168.1.1 to 192.168.1.253 (I don't think that 1 difference from .254 could make a difference could it?) I'm really starting to believe that It's a hardware issue. I'm probably going to contact a person to diagnose the phone tomorrow. Maybe it could be a malfunction of the WiFi chips in the phone.

If there is authentication error then that means that the phone can detect the wireless network so the hardware seems ok. Did you try to change the router channel? And even try changing the transmission from a/b/g/n to "G only" or "N only".

That's exactly what I thought too. Why can't it connect if it can detect the network? And I've since tried changing channels only for it to return to the same result, authentication error. And my router settings do not have an option to change the radio type. I can't remember exactly where but it might be Android forums or something (read too many different forums over the past few days) and this guy said that maybe it was some power management failure thing. I'm not an expert with hardware and can't provide any explanation or theory. Maybe there's some other component that manages the power to use that'll enable the phone to receive data from the router and that thing malfunctions while the main wifi chip still works that explains why I can still detect wifi networks?
[Edit]I'm also thinking that maybe because this Imaginary power management component inside the phone is malfunctioning/not receiving enough power, that's why when im in a room different from where the router is, i cannot connect because the phone isn't receiving enough power to validate the data from the radio waves and also because when Im standing beside the router then can load webpages just fine because the Signal strength is high and probably the radio waves from the router is emitting high energy so the power management component doesn't require as much energy to receive data compared to when Im in my room. Something like the router shouting and your phone needs a certain amount of energy to hear the voice from the room otherwise you cant but if you're standing beside it you can hear it no matter what. (This is just my theory and what Im thinking the problem is. It is not an explanation but just my opinion. This information could be totally wrong for all I know.)

On your phone: Settings > WiFi > Menu > WPS
Meanwhile, I will try to search for another solution and post it here if i can find anything.

Yep, WPS is supported and enabled on my router. Use it cause I was too lazy to retype my password everytime i flashed a firmware on the phone haha. And same thing. when I try to connect using WPS, the phone (in my room or any location 10cm or more away from router) doesnt react even after pushing the button on the router. But if I were to stand beside the router, WPS works without any problems.

Ok try using airplane mode when you are standing at a distance and check if the wireless connection continues.

No improvement, unfortunately The progress bar just crawls to the end and the phone just says WPS failed. This was approximately 1 meter away from the router, I have to be less than 1 metre from the router to get a connection. Btw, router was rebooted several times and Security has always been WPA/WPA2-PSK, not very interested in changing the security to other types like WEP. Just not very trustable

I can understand that this is very frustrating for you. Believe me, I've had issues with phones and wifi
Ok, so I found 2 short threads that you could read:
Link 1
Link 2
Summary:
- try the steps in Link 1
- Change phone frequency from 2.4ghz to 5GHz (had this option in Omega ROM 4.3-based)
- 2 users report that the issue is fixed in CM9 (or even other CM roms)
- Might be a mainboard issue after all.
PS: Surprisingly, some of the people reporting the issue have used Omega rom in the past and faced the issues since then. (I didn't have any issues though so I cant blame the rom)

Unfortunately I'm not the original owner of this S3 so I can't be sure if the previous owner flashed any custom ROMs.

Yeah, I'm suffering from OCD and just to make sure the bug doesn't carry over to the next ROM i flash, I formatted my phone through recovery before flashing the .tar firmware in ODIN. And I tried 2 different firmwares and still same thing. Now on MF6 stock 4.1.2 and trying to avoid stock 4.3 because of Knox bootloader.

Don't worry about Knox, it is not present in 4.3, so you can just flash GNA5 and be done with it! I do recommend Nova or Apex launcher though, way smoother!
For all the other people here, this is a known bug with certain routers that are not 100% compliant with the WiFi standard and therefor do not confirm the handshake. I have had these problems with certain ROMs as well (cannot exactly remember which ones) and after flashing another ROM (at the moment I am on GNA5) Samsung fixed it, while it is not even their issue, the issue/bug lies within the routers that pose problems.

Really? Because with the Galaxy S4, late 4.2.2 firmwares and all 4.3 and above firmwares had new Knox bootloaders which means no turning back to old 4.2.2 ROMs and also the Knox 0x1 flag which to my knowledge is not resettable at the time of this writing.

So I've seen a few posts about slow wifi on the G5 here on XDA but can't remember there was any solutions really.
Has there been any progress regarding to this?
Seems like my wifi suddenly drops from time to time (like every 2-3min or something), the "wifi bar" doesn't drop for even a second though so I guess it stays connected but isn't able to pull/send requests.
Getting quite annoyed with this since it's faster with my 4G network on than 100mbit wifi.
Also, might be a coincidence but overall I feel like my wifi got slower when I got the G5, on my Macbooks etc that is. Could of course be some router issues but not likely.
Any ideas? Kinda bummed out since I love the phone.
Might be a ip6 issue it is on my g4 use an app called disable ipv6 and it helps. Dont know if g5 suffers from the incompatability either
I would replace the phone. I get no wifi drop out and wifi is blazing fast when my internet connection at work and home isn't playing up.
If you can, disable IPv6 on your router, or if you have the European Varient and have root, there is a script to disable it on your device. I had the same issue and that was the trick. Get an app to test for an ipv6 leak before-hand, just to be sure.

ALSO, If you head into your developer settings, you can enable "Legacy DCHP" I have found this useful on a number of devices that were having issues with WiFi.
Double wifi speed of OP2
According to XDA Senior Member dreinulldrei, the WiFi configuration file used in the OnePlus 3 and 3T is the default one provided by Qualcomm. That’s not really an issue in and of itself, but the user discovered that the default configuration disabled channel bonding in the 2.4GHz frequency. 5GHz frequency networks have channel bonding enabled (and if you have access to this frequency, then it is advised you connect to it), but if your router only support the 2.4GHz frequency then this trick may be useful for you.
Enabling channel bonding should theoretically double your wireless throughput (as long as your router supports channel bonding), as the channel width increases from 20MHz to 40MHz. This trick is quite easy to implement, as all one needs to do is modify one line in WCNSS_qcom_cfg.ini (located in /system/etc/wifi).

Original article - https://www.xda-developers.com/how-to-double-the-wifi-speed-on-your-oneplus-3-3t/
I didn't get the maximum speed of my connection through my OnePlus 2 either. So I checked WCNSS_qcom_cfg.ini (located in /system/etc/wifi)
to see if by any chance it's disabled on OP2 as well & YES!
Channel bonding in 2.4GHz frequency's disabled by default on OnePlus 2 as well.
Use following method to enable channel bonding in 2.4GHz frequency & speed up your connection,
Warning!
I won't be held responsible for any damaged/bricked devices. Use this guide at your own risk
In essence, there is a greater possibility for wireless interference if you enable a channel width of 40MHz. The exact reason why it increases interference is more complicated than is necessary to cover in this article, but in general “40MHz wide channels over 2.4GHz is not a good idea in urban areas where there is a high density of WiFi access points” to quote XDA Recognized Developer SultanXDA.
However, if you are located in a more rural or suburban area where there are few wireless networks to interfere with your own, this fix provides a free way to double your phone’s network speed. Try it out and let us know if it works for you!

Method
-> Open WCNSS_qcom_cfg.ini (located in /system/etc/wifi) using a text editor
-> Find line "gChannelBondingMode24GHz=0"
-> Change "gChannelBondingMode24GHz=0" to "gChannelBondingMode24GHz=1"
-> Save & Reboot. Done!

Yes. Otherwise you can't edit the WCNSS_qcom_cfg.ini file.

If your internet connection isn't as quick as his one, you won't see any difference. If you have a normal connection say below 20mbps you won't see a difference.

Maybe your router has channel bonding disabled. Plus make sure it's a 2.4GHz. For 5.0GHz it's already enabled in WCNSS_qcom_cfg.ini

Yes, u right. My connection speed is 15mbps..
Seen on the XDA news portal for the OP3, I immediately did it for my OP2 and it works. Just a shame that I use 5GHz everywhere, so it doesn't add a use for me
Saw this for OP3 too. Did it on my OP2. Worked: faster Wifi. 150 mbps.
Then noticed Portable WiFi Hot-Spot stopped being detected by other devices (laptop, other phones).
Reverted changes same way: edit file, set to 0. Issue remained.
Finally solved by restoring a recent backup of System partition via TWRP.
Also, note that your router or access point must be 802.11n compatible, and enabled with correct settings. With older 802.11g models you are stuck at 54 Mbit/s anyway.
Little guide on that topic: https://www.lifewire.com/get-300-mbps-speed-on-802-11n-network-818267 (OP2 will get only 150MBps because it has one antenna)

Indeed you did.
Unfortunately I'm not savvy enough to understand how that warning is related to the HotSpot from my OP2 not being detected by even my car's Android stereo (which detected it before the change) even in my building's underground parking where there was no other WiFi network available... in theory, there would be no interference there if no other WiFi network is detected... right?
...or you meant the text in red? If so, I'm not putting blame on anyone! I was just commenting on my experience as I did see no mention of such problems so that others could would check this if they do need the hot-spot as I do.
Cheers!

I admire your contribution by sharing your issues after changing channel bonding. It's the reason forums like xda exists. What I meant was I added a 'Warning' section because there will be issues to be expected(for some). In that section I quoted discovered issues mentioned in the article.
As for your problem,
You said the problem existed even after reverting the change ? Right ? Maybe it's not the one caused the problem. Maybe something else did.

Yup. Undid the change in same way I applied it: set system to r/w, edit file, save, set system to r/o, reboot. I even tried wipe cache/Dalvik just in case too. No fix.
I can't say for sure it was this as I have no hard proof, but I'm pretty positive. Reason: In between the change and reverting it, I did nothing else to system (this is in fact first time I touch it) nor did I install any new apps. I'm very careful on changes and never apply more than one at a time or too frequently. This way I can isolate issues. And also that got solved by restoring system partition alone.
Anyway!! Just thought of reporting it for people to be aware and check this if they apply the change. If in fact the change has no impact over the hot-spot, then I did do something else and can't remember!
Thanks & Cheers!

Amazing! I'll try implementation of this into my ROM and see how it goes in general
This solved the old firmware question for me (3.5.6=random reboots, 3.1=WiFi drops). Now I can just use the 3.1 firmware without any downsides.
